Abstract
Atomic force microscope (AFM) videos reveal the near-surface nanostructure and dynamics of the ionic liquids (ILs) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (BMIM DCA) and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (HMIM DCA) above highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrodes as a function of surface potential. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal the molecular-level composition of the nanostructures. In combination, AFM and MD show that the near-surface aggregates form via solvophobic association of the cation alkyl chains at the electrode interface. The diffusion coefficients of interfacial nanostructures are ≈0.01 nm2 s-1 and vary with the cation alkyl chain length and the surface potential. For each IL, the nanostructure diffusion coefficients are similar at open-circuit potential (OCP) and OCP + 1V, but BMIM DCA moves about twice as fast as HMIM DCA. At negative potentials, the diffusion coefficient decreases for BMIM DCA and increases for HMIM DCA. When the surface potential is switched from negative to positive, a sudden change in the direction of the nanostructure motion is observed for both BMIM DCA and HMIM DCA. No transient dynamics are noted following other potential jumps. This study provides a new fundamental understanding regarding the dynamics of electrochemically stable ILs at electrodes vital for the rational development of IL-based electrochemical devices.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) offer a wide range of promising applications due to their unique and designable properties compared to conventional solvents. Further development and application of ILs require correlating/predicting their pressure-viscosity-temperature behavior. In this review, we firstly introduce methods for calculation of thermodynamic inputs of viscosity models. Next, we introduce theories, theoretical and semi-empirical models coupling various theories with EoSs or activity coefficient models, and empirical and phenomenological models for viscosity of pure ILs and IL-related mixtures. Our modelling description is followed immediately by model application and performance. Then, we propose simple predictive equations for viscosity of IL-related mixtures and systematically compare performances of the above-mentioned theories and models. In concluding remarks, we recommend robust predictive models for viscosity at atmospheric pressure as well as proper and consistent theories and models for P-η-T behavior. The work that still remains to be done to obtain the desired theories and models for viscosity of ILs and IL-related mixtures is also presented. The present review is structured from pure ILs to IL-related mixtures and aims to summarize and quantitatively discuss the recent advances in theoretical and empirical modelling of viscosity of ILs and IL-related mixtures.

Abstract
Simulations of ab initio molecular dynamics have been performed for mixtures of ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMIM-TFSI) ionic liquid and water. Statistics of donors and acceptors of hydrogen bonds has revealed that with increasing water content, hydrogen bonds between EMIM cations and TFSI anions are replaced by bonds to water molecules. In the mixture of liquids, the total number of bonds (from EMIM cations or water molecules) formed by TFSI acceptors increases. IR spectra obtained from ab initio molecular dynamics trajectories are in good agreement with literature data for ionic liquid/water systems. Analysis of oscillations of individual C-H and O-H bonds has shown correlations between vibrational frequencies and hydrogen bonds formed by an EMIM cation or water molecule and has indicated that the changes in the IR spectrum result from the decreased number of water-water hydrogen bonds in the mixture. The tests of DFTB methodology with tailored parameterizations have yielded reasonably good description of the IR spectrum of bulk water, whereas available parameterizations have failed in satisfactory reproduction of the IR spectrum of EMIM-TFSI/water mixtures in the region above 3000 cm-1.

A New Compartmentalized Scale ( PN) for Measuring Polarity Applied to Novel Ether-Functionalized Amino Acid Ionic Liquids. MOLECULES (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 27:molecules27103231. Abstract
Functionalized and environmentally friendly ionic liquids are required in many fields, but convenient methods for measuring their polarity are lacking. Two novel ether-functionalized amino acid ionic liquids, 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium alanine ([C1OC2mim][Ala]) and 1-(2-ethoxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium alanine ([C2OC2mim][Ala]), were synthesized by a neutralization method and their structures confirmed by NMR spectroscopy. Density, surface tension, and refractive index were determined using the standard addition method. The strength of intermolecular interactions within these ionic liquids was examined in terms of standard entropy, lattice energy, and association enthalpy. A new polarity scale, PN, is now proposed, which divides polarity into two compartments: the surface and the body of the liquid. Surface tension is predicted via an improved Lorentz-Lorenz equation, and molar surface entropy is used to determine the polarity of the surface. This new PN scale is based on easily measured physicochemical parameters, is validated against alternative polarity scales, and is applicable to both ionic and molecular liquids.

Abstract
Classical polarizable molecular dynamics simulations have been performed for LiTFSI solutions in the EMIM-TFSI ionic liquid. Different temperature or pressure values and salt concentrations have been examined. The structure and dynamics of the solvation shell of Li+ cations, diffusion coefficients of ions, conductivities of the electrolytes, and correlations between motions of ions have been analyzed. The results indicated that regardless of the conditions, significant correlations are present in all systems. The degree of correlations depends mainly on the salt fraction in the electrolyte and is much less affected by temperature and pressure changes. A positive correlation between motions of Li+ cations and TFSI anions, leading to the occurrence of negative Li+ transference numbers, exists for all conditions, although temperature and pressure changes affect the speed of anion exchange in Li+ solvation shells.

Abstract
The glassy, supercooled, and normal liquid states of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide series [CnC1im][TCM] (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 16) were investigated by dielectric and mechanical (rheological) experiments supplemented by X-ray diffraction. The conductivity relaxation was found to be accompanied by a pronounced secondary relaxation. However, based on ambient and high-pressure results as well as the coupling model, we assumed that the latter one can not be classified as Johari-Goldstein relaxation. Moreover, the studies on the nanoscale organization of ionic liquids indicated that 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide ILs begin to form nanoscale aggregates when the alkyl chain of the cation has six carbon atoms.

Abstract
MOSCED (modified separation of cohesive energy density) is a solubility parameter method that offers an improved treatment of association interactions. Solubility parameter methods are well known for their ability to both make quantitative predictions and offer a qualitative description of the underlying molecular-level driving forces, lending themselves to intuitive solvent selection and design. Currently, MOSCED parameters are available for 130 organic solvents, water, and 33 imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquids (ILs). In this work, we expand MOSCED to cover 66 additional ILs containing the pyridinium, quinolinium, pyrrolidinium, piperidinium, bicyclic, morpholinium, ammonium, phosphonium, and sulfonium cations using 10,052 experimental limiting activity coefficients. The resulting parameters may readily be used to predict the phase behavior in mixtures involving ILs.

Abstract
As the development of the work (J. Phys. Chem. B 2019, 123 (10), 2362-2372), we have investigated the translational mobility in the same set of dried imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) [bmim]A (A = BF4-, NO3-, TfO-, I-, Br-, and Cl-) in a wide temperature range using the NMR technique. It is shown that for the [bmim]+ cation, the temperature dependencies of product Dη do not follow the Stokes-Einstein relation for most systems studied, that is, the so-called "diffusion-viscosity decoupling" was realized. The correlation between local and translational mobility in pure IL of the [bmim][A] type was investigated using the data on NMR relaxation rates and diffusion coefficients. The most recent hypothesis of "water pockets" in mixtures of IL with water is critically discussed. Considering the totality of data in the literature and obtained here, we propose a specific model of the microstructure which may be applied up to water concentrations of 80-90 mol % (the structure of water-rich solutions is out of our current consideration). To confirm the model, molecular dynamics simulations of "IL-water" mixtures were also carried out.

Abstract
New types of ionic liquids (ILs) with an epoxy group on a piperidinium-type cation were successfully synthesized by the simple anion exchange reaction of a solid 1-allyl-1-(oxiran-2-ylmethyl)piperidinium bromide, which was designed in this study. Unfortunately, the physicochemical properties, e.g., viscosity and ionic conductivity, of the ILs were inferior to those of common ILs such as 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C2mim][BF4]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([C4mim][Tf2N]). However, the resulting ILs are of great interest as reaction intermediates: For example, the epoxy group on the cation could react with various reagents, including CO2. Consequently, the modification of the cation structure in the ILs was possible. This is particularly interesting because it is very difficult to modify commonly used ILs. The approach established in this article will provide a favorable synthetic route for creating novel functional ILs in the future.

Abstract
In this work, the capability of the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, [C2mim]FSI, to extract o-cresol, 2-chlorophenol, resorcinol and phenol from water, reaching the legal limit of 1 mg L-1 was analyzed. The extraction process was carried out for each one of these phenolic compounds varying the initial concentration in water from 3 mg L-1 to 1000 mg L-1, and for aqueous mixtures of the four phenolic compounds in the same concentration range. Because of the scarcity of physical properties of the [C2mim]FSI, density, speed of sound, dynamic viscosity and refractive index were measured from 293.15 to 343.15 K at atmospheric pressure. From the experimental data, the thermal expansion coefficient and the isentropic compressibility for the pure ionic liquid were calculated. Even though [C2mim]FSI is hydrophobic, it can solve small quantities of water that can hinder the recovery of the ionic liquid, consequently the solubility of water in the ionic liquid was determined at several temperatures and atmospheric pressure. In addition to experimental data, a literature review on the use of ionic liquids to extract phenolic compounds from water was performed.

Abstract
This study reports on understanding the formation of bubbles in ionic liquids (ILs), with a view to utilising ILs more efficiently in gas capture processes. In particular, the impact of the IL structure on the bubble sizes obtained has been determined in order to obtain design principles for the ionic liquids utilised. 11 ILs were used in this study with a range of physico-chemical properties in order to determine parametrically the impact on bubble size due to the liquid properties and chemical moieties present. The results suggest the bubble size observed is dictated by the strength of interaction between the cation and anion of the IL and, therefore, the mass transport within the system. This bubble size - ILs structure-physical property relationship has been illustrated using a series of QSPR correlations. A predictive model based only on the sigma profiles of the anions and cations has been developed which shows the best correlation without the need to incorporate the physico-chemical properties of the liquids. Depending on the IL, selected mean bubble sizes observed were between 56.1 and 766.9 μm demonstrating that microbubbles can be produced in the IL allowing the potential for enhanced mass transport and absorption kinetics in these systems.

Abstract
New measurements are reported for the isochoric heat capacity of the ionic liquid substance 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([C6mim][NTf2]). These measurements extend the ranges of our earlier study [N.G. Polikhronidi et al., Phys. Chem. Liq. 52, 657 (2014)] by 5 % of the compressed liquid density and by 75 kelvins. An adiabatic calorimeter was used to measure one-phase (CV1) liquid and two-phase (CV2) liquid + vapor isochoric heat capacities, densities (ρS ), and phase-transition temperatures (TS ) of the ionic liquid (IL) substance. The combined expanded uncertainty of the density ρ and isochoric heat capacity CV measurements at the 95 % confidence level with a coverage factor of k = 2 is estimated to be 0.15 % and 3 %, respectively. Measurements are concentrated in the immediate vicinity of the liquid + vapor phase transition curve, in order to closely observe phase transitions. The present measurements and those of our earlier study are analyzed together, and are presented in terms of thermodynamic properties (TS, ρS, CV1 and CV2) evaluated at saturation and in terms of key derived thermodynamic properties Cp, CS, [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] on the liquid + vapor phase transition curve. A thermodynamic relation by Yang and Yang is used to confirm the internal consistency of measured two-phase heat capacities CV2, which are observed to fall perfectly on a line as a function of specific volume at a constant temperature. The observed linear behavior is exploited to evaluate contributions to the quantity CV2 = f(V,T) from chemical potential [Formula: see text] and from vapor pressure [Formula: see text]. The physical nature and specific details of the temperature and specific volume dependence of the two-phase isochoric heat capacity and some features of the other derived thermodynamic properties of IL at liquid saturation curve are considered in detail.

Abstract
This work explores the n vs. iso isomerization effects on the physicochemical properties of different families of ionic liquids (ILs) with variable aromaticity and ring size. This study comprises the experimental measurements, in a wide temperature range, of the ILs' thermal behavior, heat capacities, densities, refractive indices, surface tensions, and viscosities. The results here reported show that the presence of the iso-alkyl group leads to an increase of the temperature of the glass transition, Tg. The iso-pyrrolidinium (5 atoms ring cation core) and iso-piperidinium (6 atoms ring cation core) ILs present a strong differentiation in the enthalpy and entropy of melting. Non-aromatic ILs have higher molar heat capacities due to the increase of the atomic contribution, whereas it was not found any significant differentiation between the n and iso-alkyl isomers. A small increase of the surface tension was observed for the non-aromatic ILs, which could be related to their higher cohesive energy of the bulk, while the lower surface entropy observed for the iso isomers indicates a structural resemblance between the IL bulk and surface. The significant differentiation between ILs with a 5 and 6 atoms ring cation in the n-alkyl series (where 5 atoms ring cations have higher surface entropy) is an indication of a more efficient arrangement of the non-polar region at the surface in ILs with smaller cation cores. The ILs constituted by non-aromatic piperidinium cation, and iso-alkyl isomers were found to be the most viscous among the studied ILs due to their higher energy barriers for shear stress.
