Abstract
Redox-inactive metal ions are essential in modulating the reactivity of various oxygen-containing metal complexes and metalloenzymes, including photosystem II (PSII). The heart of this unique membrane-protein complex comprises the Mn4CaO5 cluster, in which the Ca2+ ion acts as a critical cofactor in the splitting of water in PSII. However, there is still a lack of studies involving Ca-based reactive oxygen species (ROS) systems, and the exact nature of the interaction between the Ca2+ center and ROS in PSII still generates intense debate. Here, harnessing a novel Ca-TEMPO complex supported by the β-diketiminate ligand to control the activation of O2, we report the isolation and structural characterization of hitherto elusive Ca peroxides, a homometallic Ca hydroperoxide and a heterometallic Ca/K peroxide. Our studies indicate that the presence of K+ cations is a key factor controlling the outcome of the oxygenation reaction of the model Ca-TEMPO complex. Combining experimental observations with computational investigations, we also propose a mechanistic rationalization for the reaction outcomes. The designed approach demonstrates metal-TEMPO complexes as a versatile platform for O2 activation and advances the understanding of Ca/ROS systems.

Abstract
A series of amidine ligands RAmDIPP (R is backbone substituent, R = 2-methylpyridine (HL1), N,N,2-trimethylaniline (HL2), N,N-dimethylpropan-1-amine (HL3); DIPP (2,6-diisopropylphenyl) is N substituent) and a (Z)-1,1-diethyl-2,3-bis(2-methoxyphenyl)guanidine ligand (HL4) have been synthesized. Reaction of HL1-HL4 with Ca[N(SiHMe2)2](THF) or Ca[N(SiMe3)2](THF)2, respectively, afforded complexes 1-8 (1: [L1AmDIPPCa(SiHMe2)2]2, 2: L1AmDIPPCaN(SiMe3)2·(THF)2, 3: L2AmDIPPCaN(SiHMe2)2·(THF)2, 4: L2AmDIPPCaN(SiMe3)2·(THF), 5: L3AmDIPPCaN(SiHMe2)2·(THF)2, 6: L3AmDIPPCaN(SiMe3)2·(THF)2, 7: [L4CaN(SiHMe2)2]2, 8: [L4CaN(SiMe3)2]2). All the complexes were well-defined by NMR spectrum analyses and the molecular structures of 3 and 5-8 were further determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. In combination with an excess of PhOH as the chain transfer agent, complexes 1-8 catalyzed immortal ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide in a controlled manner and exhibited moderate catalytic activity at room temperature. The end-group fidelity of the resultant polymer was certified by NMR and MALDI-TOF mass spectra.

Abstract
The large alkaline earths (Ae), calcium, strontium and barium, have in the past 15 years yielded a brand new generation of heteroleptic molecular catalysts for the production of fine chemicals. However, the integrity of these complexes is often plagued by ligand redistribution equilibria in solution. This personal account retraces the paths followed in our research group towards the design of stable heteroleptic alkalino-earth complexes, including the use of intramolecular noncovalent Ae···H-Si and Ae···F-C interactions. Their implementation as homogenous precatalysts for reactions such as the intramolecular and intermolecular hydroamination and hydrophosphination of activated alkenes, the hydrophosphonylation of ketones, and the dehydrogenative coupling of amines and hydrosilanes that enable the efficient and controlled formations of CP, CN, or SiN σ-bonds, is presented in a synthetic perspective that highlights their overall outstanding catalytic performance.

Abstract
Halogenated 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligands [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)](-), [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)](-) and [N{(C(3)F(7))C(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))N}(2)](-), alone or in combination with other N-donors like CH(3)CN, CH(3)(CH(2))(2)CN, and N(C(2)H(5))(3), have been used in the stabilization of thermally stable, two-, three- or four-coordinate silver(i) adducts. X-Ray crystallographic analyses of {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag}(n), {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(NCCH(3))}(n), {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))N}(2)]Ag(NCCH(3))}(n), {[N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(NCCH(3))(2)}(n) and {[N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(NCC(3)H(7))}(n) revealed the presence of bridging 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligands bonded to silver through terminal nitrogen atoms. These adducts are polymeric in the solid state. [N{(C(3)F(7))C(2,6-Cl(2)C(6)H(3))N}(2)]AgN(C(2)H(5))(3) is monomeric and features a 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligand bonded to Ag(I) in a κ(1)-fashion via only one of the terminal nitrogen atoms. The solid state structure of [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]H has also been reported and it forms polymeric chains via inter-molecular N-H···N hydrogen-bonding.

Abstract
Synthesis of the perfluorinated 1,3,5-triazapentadiene [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]H and the use of its conjugate base as a supporting ligand for the isolation of silver(i) and copper(i) complexes are reported. Some of the related chemistry involving [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)](-) (that has bulkier -C(3)F(7) groups on the 1,3,5-triazapentadienyl ligand backbone) is also presented. X-ray crystallographic data show a wide variety of structures ranging from intermolecular, hydrogen-bonded chain structure for [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]H with a twisted W-shaped N(3)C(2) core, monomeric [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(CN(t)Bu)(2) and [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(CN(t)Bu)(2) where the κ(1)-bonded triazapentadienyl ligand bonding to the metal fragment via the central nitrogen atom, monomeric [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(PPh(3))(2) and [N{(C(3)F(7))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Ag(PPh(3))(2) that feature κ(1)-bonded triazapentadienyl ligand bonding to the metal fragment via one of the terminal nitrogen atoms, to that of the monomeric [N{(CF(3))C(C(6)F(5))N}(2)]Cu(CN(t)Bu)(2) containing a κ(2)-bonded triazapentadienyl ligand and a U-shaped NCNCN ligand backbone. The isocyanide adducts show relatively high ν(CN) values in the IR spectra.

Abstract
Rate enhancements for the reduction of dioxygen by a Mn(II) complex were observed in the presence of redox-inactive group 2 metal ions. The rate changes were correlated with an increase in the Lewis acidity of the group 2 metal ions. These studies led to the isolation of heterobimetallic complexes containing Mn(III)-(μ-OH)-M(II) cores (M(II) = Ca(II), Ba(II)) in which the hydroxo oxygen atom is derived from O(2). This type of core structure has relevance to the oxygen-evolving complex within photosystem II.

Abstract
Victor Grignard's Nobel Prize-winning preparation of organomagnesium halides (Grignard reagents) marked the formal beginning of organometallic chemistry with alkaline earth metals. Further development of this invaluable synthetic route, RX+Mg→RMgX, with the heavier alkaline earth metals (Ca and Sr) was hampered by limitations in synthetic methodologies. Moreover, the lack of suitable ligands for stabilizing the reactive target molecules, particularly with the more electropositive Ca and Sr, was another obstacle. The absence in the literature, until just recently, of fundamental alkaline earth metal complexes with M-H, M-F, and M-OH (where M is the Group 2 metal Mg, Ca, or Sr) bonds amenable for organometallic reactions is remarkable. The progress in isolating various unstable compounds of p-block elements with β-diketiminate ligands was recently applied to Group 2 chemistry. The monoanionic β-diketiminate ligands are versatile tools for addressing synthetic challenges, as amply demonstrated with alkaline earth complexes: the synthesis and structural characterization of soluble β-diketiminatocalcium hydroxide, β-diketiminatostrontium hydroxide, and β-diketiminatocalcium fluoride are just a few examples of our contribution to this area of research. To advance the chemistry beyond synthesis, we have investigated the reactivity and potential for applications of these species, for example, through the demonstration of dip coating surfaces with CaCO(3) and CaF(2) with solutions of the calcium hydroxide and calcium fluoride complexes, respectively. In this Account, we summarize some recent developments in alkaline earth metal complex chemistry, particularly of Mg, Ca, and Sr, through the utilization of β-diketiminate ligands. We focus on results generated in our laboratory but give due mention to work from other groups as well. We also highlight the closely related chemistry of the Group 12 element Zn, as well as the important chemistry developed by other groups using the complexes we have reported. Although Mg and Ca are more abundant in living organisms, no other metal has as many biological functions as Zn. Thus Zn, the nontoxic alternative to the heavier Group 12 elements Cd and Hg, occupies a unique position ripe for further exploration.

Abstract
Assembling a molecule containing two metal centers with entirely different chemical properties remains a synthetic challenge. One of the major motivations for this chemistry is its ability to catalyze various organic transformations. The proximity between two different metals in a heterometallic complex allows more pronounced chemical communication between the metals and often leads to the modification of the fundamental properties of the individual metal atoms through the well-known cooperative interaction. Although various types of heterometallic systems are known, the M-O-M' framework is particularly important because it brings the metals into close proximity with each other. In this Account, we describe several suitable synthetic routes for the assembly of heterometals of entirely different chemical properties through an oxygen atom. The new synthetic strategies for the construction of heterobimetallic complexes take advantage of unprecedented syntheses of a number of hydroxide precursors of the type LMR(OH) [L = CH{N(Ar)(CMe)}(2), Ar = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3); M = Al, Ga, or Ge; R = alkyl, aryl, or lone pair of electrons], [LSr(mu-OH)](2).(THF)(3), and Cp*(2)ZrMe(OH). We used the Brønsted acidic character of the proton in the M(O-H), Sr(O-H), or Zr(O-H) moiety, to build a new class of heterobimetallic complexes based on M-O-M' motif. This synthetic strategy assembles a main group element with another main group element, a transition metal, or a lanthanide metal. This synthetic development provides access to a new class of heterobimetallic complexes through oxygen bridging. In many cases these complexes prove to be excellent candidates for polymerization of monomers including epsilon-caprolactone, ethylene, and styrene. Some of these catalysts bear a chemically grafted methylalumoxane (MAO) unit in the backbone of an active metal center, which led to efficient ethylene polymerizations at an unusually low MAO concentration. We attribute this reactivity both to the presence of a chemically grafted (Me)Al-O backbone in the active catalysts (a part of externally added cocatalyst, MAO) and to the enhanced Lewis acidity from the bridging oxygen at the active metal center. In addition, we have demonstrated the development of heterometallic systems having two catalytically active centers. Such structures could aid in the development of a catalytic system bearing two active centers with different chemistries.
