Activation of Methane by Zinc: Gas-Phase Synthesis, Structure, and Bonding of HZnCH3

Enhanced mono-aromatics production by the CH4-assisted pyrolysis of microalgae using Zn-based HZSM-5 catalysts

This study presents the catalytic pyrolysis of microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris), using pure CH4 and H2-rich gas evolved from CH4 decomposition on three different HZSM-5 catalysts loaded with Zn, Ga, and Pt, aimed specifically at producing high-value mono-aromatics such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX). In comparison with that for the typical inert N2 environment, a pure CH4 environment increased the bio-oil yield from 32.4 wt% to 37.4 wt% probably due to hydrogen and methyl radical insertion in the bio-oil components. Furthermore, the addition of bimetals further increased bio-oil yield. For example, ZnPtHZ led to a bio-oil yield of 47.7 wt% in pure CH4. ZnGaHZ resulted in the maximum BTEX yield (6.68 wt%), which could be explained by CH4 activation, co-aromatization, and hydrodeoxygenation. The BTEX yield could be further increased to 7.62 wt% when pyrolysis was conducted in H2-rich gas evolved from CH4 decomposition over ZnGaHZ, as rates of aromatization and hydrodeoxygenation were relatively high under this condition. This study experimentally validated that the combination of ZnGaHZ and CH4 decomposition synergistically increases BTEX production using C. vulgaris.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

C-H Bond Activation by the Excited Zinc Atom: Gas-Phase Formation of Methylzinc Hydride (HZnCH3) Based on Multireference Second-Order Perturbation Theory and Coupled Cluster Calculations

The pioneering spectroscopic observations of the methylzinc hydride [HZnCH₃(X¹A₁)] molecule were reported previously by the Ziurys group [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 17186-17192], and the possible formation mechanisms were suggested therein, including those with the participation of excited zinc atoms in reaction with methane. Herein, the ground singlet state and the lowest excited triplet state potential energy surfaces of the Zn + CH₄ reaction have been explored using high-level electronic structure calculations with multireference second-order perturbation theory and coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) methods in conjunction with all-electron basis sets (up to aug-cc-pV5Z) and scalar relativistic effects incorporated via the second-order Douglas-Kroll-Hess (DK) method. Based on the ab initio results, a plausible scenario for the formation of HZnCH₃(X¹A₁) is proposed involving the activation of the C-H bond of methane by the lowest excited ³P state atomic zinc. Calculations also highlight the importance of an agostic-like Zn···H-C interactions in the pre-activation complex and good agreement between the structure of the HZnCH₃(X¹A₁) molecule predicted at the DK-CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ-DK level of theory and that derived from rotational spectroscopy, as well as the discrepancies between the ab initio and density functional theory predictions.

Metal-Ligand Cooperation Facilitates Bond Activation and Catalytic Hydrogenation with Zinc Pincer Complexes

A series of PNP zinc pincer complexes capable of bond activation via aromatization/dearomatization metal–ligand cooperation (MLC) were prepared and characterized. Reversible heterolytic N–H and H–H bond activation by MLC is shown, in which hemilability of the phosphorus linkers plays a key role. Utilizing this zinc pincer system, base-free catalytic hydrogenation of imines and ketones is demonstrated. A detailed mechanistic study supported by computation implicates the key role of MLC in facilitating effective catalysis. This approach offers a new strategy for (de)hydrogenation and other catalytic transformations mediated by zinc and other main group metals.

Spectroscopy and formation of lanthanum-hydrocarbon radicals formed by association and carbon-carbon bond cleavage of isoprene

La atom reaction with isoprene is carried out in a laser-vaporization molecular beam source. The reaction yields an adduct as the major product and C-C cleaved and dehydrogenated species as the minor ones. La(C₅H₈), La(C₂H₂), and La(C₃H₄) are characterized with mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy and quantum chemical computations. The MATI spectra of all three species exhibit a strong origin band and several weak vibronic bands corresponding to La-ligand stretch and ligand-based bend excitations. La(C₅H₈) is a five-membered metallacycle, whereas La(C₂H₂) and La(C₃H₄) are three-membered rings. All three metallacycles prefer a doublet ground state with a La 6s¹-based valence electron configuration and a singlet ion. The five-membered metallacycle is formed through La addition and isoprene isomerization, whereas the two three-membered rings are produced by La addition and insertion, hydrogen migration, and carbon-carbon bond cleavage.

Highly regioselective hydride transfer, oxidative dehydrogenation, and hydrogen-atom abstraction in the thermal gas-phase chemistry of [Zn(OH)]+/C3H8

The metal center of [Zn(OH)]⁺ serves as active site in the regiospecific hydride transfer to generate [i-C₃H₇]⁺ as major product in the reaction with C₃H₈. In the [Zn(OH)]⁺–C₃H₈ system, a high regioselectivity features the remarkable chemoselectivity.
