Abstract
A redox-neutral coupling of allyl alcohols with trifluoromethyl ketones has been developed via Ni-Ti bimetallic catalysis. This innovative method allows for the efficient synthesis of various β-tertiary trifluoromethyl alcohol-substituted ketones with yields of up to 98%. The reaction is scalable and compatible with a wide range of substrates, including complex bioactive molecules. Mechanistic studies suggest that the rate-determining step involving β-H elimination and the presence of the Ti-based Lewis acid, as well as a hydroxyl group on the substrates, is crucial for driving the reactivity of this transformation.

Abstract
Alcohols are abundant and attractive feedstock molecules for organic synthesis. Many methods for their functionalization require them to first be converted into a more activated derivative, while recent years have seen a vast increase in the number of complexity-building transformations that directly harness unprotected alcohols. This Review discusses how transition metal catalysis can be used toward this goal. These transformations are broadly classified into three categories. Deoxygenative functionalizations, representing derivatization of the C-O bond, enable the alcohol to act as a leaving group toward the formation of new C-C bonds. Etherifications, characterized by derivatization of the O-H bond, represent classical reactivity that has been modernized to include mild reaction conditions, diverse reaction partners, and high selectivities. Lastly, chain functionalization reactions are described, wherein the alcohol group acts as a mediator in formal C-H functionalization reactions of the alkyl backbone. Each of these three classes of transformation will be discussed in context of intermolecular arylation, alkylation, and related reactions, illustrating how catalysis can enable alcohols to be directly harnessed for organic synthesis.

Abstract
A new, efficient and practical method for the three-component arylative coupling of aldehydes, alkynes and arylboronic acids has been developed through nickel catalysis. This transformation provides diverse Z-selective tetrasubstituted allylic alcohols without the use of any aggressive oragnometallic nucleophiles or reductants. Moreover, benzylalcohols are viable coupling partners via oxidation state manipulation and arylative coupling in one single catalytic cycle. This reaction features a direct and flexible approach for the preparation of stereodefined arylated allylic alcohols with broad substrate scope under mild conditions. The utility of this protocol is demonstrated through the synthesis of diverse biologically active molecular derivatives.

Abstract
The first enantioselective ruthenium-catalyzed carbonyl vinylations via hydrogen autotransfer are described. Using a ruthenium-JOSIPHOS catalyst, primary alcohols 2a-2m and 2-butyne 1a are converted to chiral allylic alcohols 3a-3m with excellent levels of absolute stereocontrol. Notably, 1°,2°-1,3-diols participate in site-selective C-C coupling, enabling asymmetric carbonyl vinylation beyond premetalated reagents, exogenous reductants, or hydroxyl protecting groups. Using 2-propanol as a reductant, aldehydes dehydro-2a, 2l participate in highly enantioselective 2-butyne-mediated vinylation under otherwise identical reaction conditions. Regio-, stereo-, and site-selective vinylations mediated by 2-pentyne 1b to form adducts 3n, 3o, and epi-3o also are described. The tiglyl alcohol motif obtained upon butyne-mediated vinylation, which is itself found in diverse secondary metabolites, may be converted to commonly encountered polyketide stereodiads, -triads, and -tetrads, as demonstrated by the formation of adducts 4a-4d. The collective mechanistic studies, including deuterium labeling experiments, corroborate a catalytic cycle involving alcohol dehydrogenation to form a transient aldehyde and a ruthenium hydride, which engages in alkyne hydrometalation to form a nucleophilic vinylruthenium species that enacts carbonyl addition. A stereochemical model for carbonyl addition invoking formyl CH···I[Ru] and CH···O≡C[Ru] hydrogen bonds is proposed based on prior calculations and crystallographic data.

Abstract
The direct upgrading reaction of simple and readily available achiral alcohols via C-H functionalization is an ideal strategy to prepare value-added chiral higher alcohols. Herein, we disclose the first enantioconvergent upgrading reaction of simple racemic secondary alcohols to enantioenriched tertiary alcohols. An N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-nickel catalyst was leveraged to enable this highly efficient formal asymmetric alcohol α-C-H arylation via a dehydrogenation using phenyl triflate as a mild oxidant followed by asymmetric addition of arylboronic esters to the transient ketones. Mechanistic studies and control experiments were conducted to reveal the possible reasons for the exceptional control over chemo- and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Methanol is an abundant and renewable chemical raw material, but its use as a C1 source in C-C bond coupling reactions still constitutes a big challenge, and the known methods are limited to the use of expensive and noble metal catalysts such as Ru, Rh and Ir. We herein report nickel-catalyzed direct coupling of alkynes and methanol, providing direct access to valuable allylic alcohols in good yields and excellent chemo- and regioselectivity. The approach features a broad substrate scope and high atom-, step- and redox-economy. Moreover, this method was successfully extended to the synthesis of [5,6]-bicyclic hemiacetals through a cascade cyclization reaction of alkynones and methanol.

Abstract
Allylic amines are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis and exist in bioactive compounds, but their synthesis via hydroaminoalkylation of alkynes with amines has been a formidable challenge. Here, we report a late transition metal Ni-catalyzed hydroaminoalkylation of alkynes with N-sulfonyl amines, providing a series of allylic amines in up to 94% yield. Double ligands of N-heterocyclic carbene (IPr) and tricyclohexylphosphine (PCy3) effectively promote the reaction.

Abstract
Alkene hydrocarbofunctionalization represents one of the most important classes of chemical transformations, but related branched-selective examples with unactivated olefins are scarce. Here, we report that catalytic amounts of a dimeric Ni(I) complex and an exogenous alkoxide base promote Markovnikov-selective hydroarylation(alkenylation) of unactivated and activated olefins using organo bromides or triflates derived from widely available phenols and ketones. Products bearing aryl- and alkenyl-substituted tertiary and quaternary centers could be isolated in up to 95% yield and >99:1 regioisomeric ratios. Contrary to previous dual-catalytic methods that rely on metal-hydride atom transfer (MHAT) to the olefin prior to carbofunctionalization with a cocatalyst, our mechanistic evidence points toward a nonradical reaction pathway that begins with site-selective carbonickelation across the C═C bond followed by hydride transfer using alkoxide as the hydride source. Utility of the single-catalyst protocol is highlighted through the synthesis of medicinally relevant scaffolds.

Abstract
Chiral α-branched amines are common structural motifs in functional materials, pharmaceuticals, and chiral catalysts. Therefore, developing efficient methods for preparing compounds with these privileged scaffolds is an important endeavor in synthetic chemistry. Herein, we describe an atom-economical, modular method for a nickel-catalyzed enantioselective α-alkenylation of readily available linear N-sulfonyl amines with alkynes to afford a wide variety of allylic amines without the need for exogenous oxidants, reductants, or activating reagents. The method provides a platform for constructing chiral α-branched amines as well as derivatives such as α-amino amides and β-amino alcohols, which can be conveniently accessed from the newly introduced alkene. Given the generality, versatility, and high atom economy of this method, we anticipate that it will have broad synthetic utility.

Abstract
The reductive coupling of alkynes represents a powerful strategy for the rapid synthesis of highly substituted 1,3-dienes. This method has the advantages of high atom and step economy, and readily available substrates. Unfortunately, the intermolecular coupling of unsymmetrical internal alkynes remains extremely challenging due to the difficulty in controlling self-dimerization and cross-coupling, as well as stereo- and regioselectivity. Previous reports are still limited to intramolecular processes or the use of stoichiometric amounts of metal catalyst. Herein, we report that nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling of two unsymmetrical internal alkynes can overcome the above-mentioned limitations by using a hemilabile directing group strategy to control the regioselectivity. A series of synthetically challenging penta-substituted 1,3-dienes are obtained in good yields with high regio- and enantioselectivity (mostly > 20/1 rr, >90% ee). The reductive coupling of alkynes represents a powerful strategy for the rapid synthesis of highly substituted 1,3-dienes.![]()

Abstract
Metal-catalyzed reductive coupling processes have emerged as a powerful methodology for the introduction of molecular complexity from simple starting materials. These methods allow for an orthogonal approach to that of redox-neutral strategies for the formation of C–C bonds by enabling cross-coupling of starting materials not applicable to redox-neutral chemistry. Abstract
The conventional oxidative Heck reaction between aryl boronic acids and alkenes typically involved the PdII/Pd0/PdII catalytic cycle incorporating an external oxidant and often suffered C=C bond isomerization for internal alkyl-substituted alkenes via chain-walking. Herein, we demonstrate that the regioselectivity (γ-selectivity vs. δ-selectivity) and pathway selectivity (hydroarylation vs. oxidative Heck coupling) of a directed Ni-catalyzed alkene arylation can be controlled by judicious tuning of the coordination environment around the nickel catalyst via optimization of an appropriate phosphine ligand and directing group. In this way, the Ni(0)-catalyzed oxidative Heck arylation that relies on transfer hydrogenation of an acceptor olefin is developed with excellent E/Z selectivity and regioselectivity. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the addition of the acceptor is crucial for lowering the energy for carbometalation and for enabling catalytic turnover.

Abstract
A Brønsted acid enabled nickel-catalyzed hydroalkenylation of aldehydes and styrene derivatives has been developed. The Brønsted acid acts as a proton shuttle to transfer a proton from the alkene to the aldehyde, thereby leading to an economical and byproduct-free coupling. A series of synthetically useful allylic alcohols were obtained through one-step reactions from readily available styrene derivatives and aliphatic aldehydes in up to 88 % yield and with high linear selectivity.

Abstract
α-Vinylation of phosphonates, phosphine oxides, sulfones, sulfonamides, and sulfoxides has been achieved by selective C-H zincation and copper-catalyzed C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) cross-coupling reaction using vinylphenyliodonium salts. The vinylation transformation proceeds in high efficiency and stereospecificity under mild reaction conditions. This zincative cross-coupling reaction represents a general alkenylation strategy, which is also applicable for α-alkenylation of esters, amides, and nitriles in the synthesis of β,γ-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.

Abstract
Hydrogen transfer initiated processes are eco-compatible transformations allowing the reversible OFF ↔ ON activation of otherwise unreactive substrates. The minimization of stoichiometric waste as well as the unique activation modes provided by these transformations make them key players for a greener future for organic synthesis. Long limited to catalytic reactions that form racemic products, considerable progress on the development of strategies for controlling diastereo- and enantioselectivity has been made in the last decade. The aim of this review is to present the different strategies that enable enantioselective transformations of this type and to highlight how they can be used to construct key synthetic building blocks in fewer operations with less waste generation.

Abstract
We have developed a catalytic method for the hydroalkylation of allenes using alkyl triflates as electrophiles and silane as a hydride source. The reaction has an excellent substrate scope and is compatible with a wide range of functional groups, including esters, aryl halides, aryl boronic esters, sulfonamides, alkyl tosylates, and alkyl bromides. We found evidence for a reaction mechanism that involves unusual dinuclear copper ally complexes as catalytic intermediates. The unusual structure of these complexes provides a rationale for their unexpected reactivity.

Abstract
We present herein a nickel-catalyzed dicarbofunctionalization of alkenes using readily available organoboronic acids and organic halides in a three-component fashion.
Efficient difunctionalization of alkenes allows the rapid construction of molecular complexity from simple building blocks in organic synthesis. We present herein a nickel-catalyzed dicarbofunctionalization of alkenes using readily available organoboronic acids and organic halides in a three-component fashion. In particular, an unprecedented regioselectivity of the 1,3-dicarbofunctionalization of N-allylpyrimidin-2-amine is achieved when aryl and methyl iodides are utilized. In contrast, the use of alkyl bromides with β-hydrogens results in 1,3-hydroarylation or oxidative 1,3-diarylation. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest an isomerization involving nickel hydride in the 1,3-difunctionalization reactions. On the other hand, the use of alkenyl or alkynyl halides promotes alternative regioselectivities to deliver 1,2-alkenylcarbonation or intriguing 2,1-alkynylcarbonation products. Such 2,1-alkynylarylation is also applicable to N-allylbenzamide as a different class of substrates. Overall, this nickel-catalyzed process proves to be powerful in delivering versatile difunctionalized compounds using readily available reagents/catalysts and a simple procedure.

Abstract
Nickel-catalyzed coupling of benzyl acrylates with activated ketones and imines provides γ-butyrolactones and lactams, respectively. The benzyl alcohol byproduct released during the lactonization/lactamization event is relayed to the next cycle where it serves as the reductant for C-C bond formation. This strategy represents a conceptually unique approach to transfer-hydrogenative C-C bond formation, thus providing examples of reductive heterocyclizations where hydrogen embedded within an alcohol leaving group facilitates turnover.

Abstract
A Ni-catalyzed Markovnikov hydroalkylation of alkynes with alkyl halides is described. The reaction proceeds smoothly without the use of sensitive organometallic reagents and shows good functional-group compatibility, enabling the efficient synthesis of a variety of 1,1-disubstituted olefins. It also provides a straightforward approach for the modification of complex organic molecules.

Abstract
The nickel-catalyzed coupling of enones or enals with alkynes in the presence of silane and titanium alkoxide reductants provides direct access to skipped diene products. The process involves a net four-electron reductive coupling and proceeds with deoxygenation of the starting enone or enal. A new class of well-defined nickel(0) precatalysts bearing an unhindered N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, which was developed in optimization of the process, is essential for the efficiency of the transformation. The strategy allows the high reactivity of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl substrates to be utilized in couplings with simultaneous extrusion of the oxygen atom, thus enabling a traceless strategy for alkene installation.

Abstract
The first nickel catalyzed deprotonative cross coupling between C(sp3)-H bonds and aryl chlorides is reported, allowing the challenging arylation of benzylimines in the absence of directing group or stoichiometric metal activation. This methodology represents a convenient access to the (diarylmethyl)amine moiety, which is widespread in pharmaceutically relevant compounds.
