Abstract
The binding mode of polar monomers in complexes with late-transition-metal catalysts for ethylene polymerization was studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ziegler–Rauk energy decomposition scheme was used to characterize the geometry distortion and steric and orbital-interaction terms in the bonding energy, while Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence (NOCV) were applied to describe the donation and back-bonding components of the bond between the monomer and the catalyst. The NOCV analysis allowed for comparison of the donor–acceptor properties of different monomers in the σ- and π-complexes. The complexes with the model, cationic Ni– or Pd–diimine catalysts, N^N–Ni(H)+ and N^N–Pd(H)+, and the neutral Ni–anilinotropone system, N^O–Ni(H), were investigated. The monomers studied included: simple olefins (Et and Pr); examples of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing polar monomers (methyl acrylate (MA), vinyl acetate (VAc), their fluorinated derivatives (FMA, FVAc), vinyl ether (VE), acrylonitrile (AN), and β-butenoic nitrile (BN); vinyl and allyl amines (VAm, PrAm); and a tertiary dimethyl vinyl amine (MVAm). The results demonstrate that the metal-based fragment has a significant influence on the relative stability of the σ- and π-complexes; the π-binding mode increases in the following order: N^N–Ni(H)+ < N^N–Pd(H)+ < N^O–Ni(H). The results of the Ziegler–Rauk bond-energy decomposition indicate that for some monomers (MA, FMA, VAc, AN, VAm, MVAm) the preference of the coordination mode has a steric (electrostatic and Pauli) origin. For other monomers (VE, FVAc, BN, PrAm) the changes in the orbital-interaction terms are important as well. The results of the NOCV analysis indicate that for both, σ- and π-coordination modes there exist components describing σ-donation and π-back-bonding. The sequences of σ-donor and π-acceptor properties of monomers in the π-complexes as well as σ-complexes are similar for the considered catalysts.

Abstract
The late transition metal catalysts for homo- and copolymerizations of olefins expand the polymer properties and the usable monomer feedstock of early transition metal catalysts. A critical step for a polymerization is the activation of catalyst precursors and the generation of the actual active site. This perspective discusses possible activation protocols for two well-known catalyst systems, the a-diimine Ni or Pd olefin polymerization catalysts and the Pd catalysts for alkene/CO copolymerization. The general concept of catalyst activation is outlined and similarities as well as differences between single-component catalysts and in situ activated systems are highlighted.

Abstract
The origin of the chemoselectivity of palladium catalysts containing bidentate phosphine ligands toward either methoxycarbonylation of ethene or the copolymerization of ethene and carbon monoxide was investigated using density functional theory based calculations. For a palladium catalyst containing the electron-donating bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane (dmpe) ligand, the rate determining step for chain propagation is shown to be the insertion of ethene into the metal-acyl bond. The high barrier for chain propagation is attributed to the low stability of the ethene intermediate, (dmpe)Pd(ethene)(C(O)CH3). For the competing methanolysis process, the most likely pathway involves the formation of (dmpe)Pd(CH3OH)(C(O)CH3) via dissociative ligand exchange, followed by a solvent mediated proton-transfer/reductive- elimination process. The overall barrier for this process is higher than the barrier for ethene insertion into the palladium-acetyl bond, in line with the experimentally observed preference of this type of catalyst toward the formation of polyketone. Electronic bite angle effects on the rates of ethene insertion and ethanoyl methanolysis were evaluated using four electronically and sterically related ligands (Me)2P(CH2)nP(Me)2 (n = 1-4). Steric effects were studied for larger tert-butyl substituted ligands using a QM/MM methodology. The results show that ethene coordination to the metal center and subsequent insertion into the palladium-ethanoyl bond are disfavored by the addition of steric bulk around the metal center. Key intermediates in the methanolysis mechanism, on the other hand, are stabilized because of electronic effects caused by increasing the bite angle of the diphosphine ligand. The combined effects explain successfully which ligands give polymer and which ones give methyl propionate as the major products of the reaction.

Abstract
The results of kinetic, deuterium-labeling, and low-temperature NMR studies have established a mechanism for the palladium-catalyzed cyclization/hydrosilylation of dimethyl diallylmalonate (1) with triethylsilane involving rapid, irreversible conversion of the palladium silyl complex [(phen)Pd(SiEt(3))(NCAr)](+) [BAr(4)](-) [Ar = 3,5-C(6)H(3)(CF(3))(2)] (4b) and 1 to the palladium 5-hexenyl chelate complex [(phen)Pd[eta(1),eta(2)-CH(CH(2)SiEt(3))CH(2)C(CO(2)Me)(2)CH(2)CH=CH(2)]](+) [BAr(4)](-) (5), followed by intramolecular carbometalation of 5 to form the palladium cyclopentylmethyl complex trans-[(phen)Pd[CH2CHCH2C(CO2Me)2CH2CHCH2SiEt3](NCAr)]+ [BAr4]- (6), and associative silylation of 6 to release 3 and regenerate 4b.

Abstract
This paper presents a density functional theory study of the ruthenium-catalyzed olefin metathesis reactions. The ligand binding energy has been calculated in the first generation of Grubbs-type (PCy3)2Cl2Ru=CHPh (pre)catalyst, as well as in the heteroleptic (pre)catalytic systems in which a N-heterocyclic carbene, NHC, ligand substitutes a single phosphine. In agreement with experiments PCy3 coordinates more strongly to Ru in the heteroleptic (pre)catalysts than in the Grubbs-type (pre)catalyst. Moreover, ethene coordination and insertion into the Ru-alkylidene bond in the above-mentioned systems, as well as in the Hofmann type catalytic system with a cis-coordinated phosphane ligand, has been studied. The calculated insertion barrier for the NHC systems are lower than that of the (PCy3)2Cl2Ru=CHPh system. This is consistent with the higher activity experimentally observed for the NHC-based system.
