Building a Pyrazole-Benzothiadiazole-Pyrazole Photosensitizer into Metal-Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation

Metal-organic frameworks for organic transformations by photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis

Organic transformation by light-driven catalysis, especially, photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis, denoted as photo(thermal) catalysis, is an efficient, green, and economical route to produce value-added compounds. In recent years, owing to their diverse structure types, tunable pore sizes, and abundant active sites, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based photo(thermal) catalysis has attracted broad interest in organic transformations. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of MOF-based photo(thermal) catalysis for organic transformations. First, the general mechanisms, unique advantages, and strategies to improve the performance of MOFs in photo(thermal) catalysis are discussed. Then, outstanding examples of organic transformations over MOF-based photo(thermal) catalysis are introduced according to the reaction type. In addition, several representative advanced characterization techniques used for revealing the charge reaction kinetics and reaction intermediates of MOF-based organic transformations by photo(thermal) catalysis are presented. Finally, the prospects and challenges in this field are proposed. This review aims to inspire the rational design and development of MOF-based materials with improved performance in organic transformations by photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis.

Modifying Parallel Excitations into One Framework for C(sp3)─H Bond Activation with Energy Combined More Than Two Photons

Natural photosynthesis enzymes utilize energies of several photons for challenging oxidation of water, whereas artificial photo-catalysis typically involves only single-photon excitation. Herein, a multiphoton excitation strategy is reported that combines parallel photo-excitations with a photoinduced electron transfer process for the activation of C(sp3)─H bonds, including methane. The metal-organic framework Fe3-MOF is designed to consolidate 4,4',4″-nitrilotrisbenzoic units for the photoactivation of dioxygen and trinuclear iron clusters as the HAT precursor for photoactivating alkanes. Under visible light irradiation, the dyes and iron clusters absorbed parallel photons simultaneously to reach their excited states, respectively, generating 1O2 via energy transfer and chlorine radical via ligand-to-metal charge transfer. The further excitation of organic dyes leads to the reduction of 1O2 into O2 •- through a photoinduced electron transfer, guaranteeing an extra multiphoton oxygen activation manner. The chlorine radical abstracts a hydrogen atom from alkanes, generating the carbon radical for further oxidation transformation. Accordingly, the total oxidation conversion of alkane utilizing three photoexcitation processes combines the energies of more than two photons. This new platform synergistically combines a consecutive excited photoredox organic dye and a HAT catalyst to combine the energies of more than two photons, providing a promising multiphoton catalysis strategy under energy saving, and high efficiency.

A Zn-MOF-based mixed matrix membrane as an ultrastable luminescent sensor for selective and visual detection of antibiotics and pesticides in food samples

The detection of antibiotics and pesticides are of great significance since their residues threaten the health of human beings by accumulation. However, most traditional solid chemical sensors are suffer from the limitations of low sensitivity and economic practicability because of the aggregating nature and unstable of solid sensors. Herein, a new luminescent sensor 1@PMMA (1, [(ZnL)·H2O]n (H2L = 5-(4-(pyridin-4-yl)benzamido)benzene-1,3-dioic acid); PMMA = poly(methyl methacrylate)) was successfully prepared. Notably, the polymer matrix provided the chemical protection for MOF particles. The as fabricated 1@PMMA was stable in milk, honey and egg as well as exhibited strong blue emission under ultraviolet light irradiation, which can act as luminescent probe for detecting antibiotics and pesticides. More interestingly, 1@PMMA exhibited visual, real-time and recyclable detection of antibiotics ornidazole (ODZ) and pesticides 2,6-dichloro-4-nitrobenzenamine (DCN) in real food samples. This work shows that the luminescent MOF-based mixed matrix membranes could be applied as good candidates for sensing analytes in practical application.

Unlocking the potential: strategic synthesis of a previously predicted pyrazolate-based stable MOF with unique clusters and high catalytic activity

The metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from [Co4Pz8] clusters (Pz = pyrazolate) and 1,3,5-tris(pyrazolate-4-yl) benzene (BTP3-) ligands was structurally predicted many years ago, and expected to be a promising candidate for various applications owing to its unique clusters and highly open 3D framework structure. However, this MOF has not been experimentally prepared yet, despite extensive efforts were made. In this work, we present the successful construction of this MOF, hereinafter referred to as BUT-124(Co), by adopting a two-step synthesis strategy, involving the initial construction of a template framework (BUT-124(Cd)) followed by a post-synthetic metal metathesis process. The effects of various cobalt sources and solvents were systematically investigated, and an innovative stepwise metathesis strategy was employed to optimize the exchange rates and the porosity of the material. BUT-124(Co) demonstrates high catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), achieving a competitive performance with an overpotential of 393 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, and also affords remarkable long-term stability during potentiostatic electrolysis in 1 M KOH solution, surpassing the durability of many benchmark catalysts. This work not only introduces a novel MOF material with promising properties but also exemplifies a strategic synthesis approach for pyrazolate-based MOFs, paving the way for advancements in diverse application fields.

A cyclic trinuclear silver complex for photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide

The development of metal complexes for photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from pure water and oxygen using solar energy, especially in the absence of any additives (e.g., acid, co-catalysts, and sacrificial agents), is a worthwhile pursuit, yet still remains highly challenging. More importantly, the O2 evolution from the water oxidation reaction has been impeded by the classic bottleneck, the photon-flux-density problem of sunlight that could be attributed to rarefied solar radiation for a long time. Herein, we reported synthesis of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based cyclic trinuclear silver complexes (Ag-CTC), and they exhibited strong visible-light absorption ability, a suitable energy bandgap, excellent photochemical properties and efficient charge separation ability. The integration of BODIPY motifs as oxygen reduction reaction sites and silver ions as water oxidation reaction sites allows Ag-CTC to photosynthesize H2O2 either from pure water or from sea water in the absence of any additives with a high H2O2 production rate of 183.7 and 192.3 μM h-1, which is higher than that of other reported metal-based photocatalysts. The photocatalytic mechanism was systematically and ambiguously investigated by various experimental analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our work represents an important breakthrough in developing a new Ag photocatalyst for the transformation of O2 into H2O2 and H2O into H2O2.

Eosin Y Post-Decorated Metal-Organic Framework as a Selectivity Regulator for the Alcohols Oxidation

The selective oxidation of alcohols into aldehydes is a basic and significant procedure, with great potential for scientific research and industrial applications. However, as an important factor in the C(sp3)-H activation process, high selectivity is generally difficult to achieve due to the fact that the more easily activated properties of aldehydes are compared to alcohols. Herein, by the ingenious decoration of eosin Y into a Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF-808), EY@MOF-808 was prepared as a selectivity regulator for the aerobic oxidation of the benzyl alcohols into corresponding aldehydes, possessing applicability for the benzylic alcohols with various substituents. By anchoring eosin Y on Zr6O4(OH)4 clusters of MOF-808 and maintaining open metal nodes with selective binding effects, the benzyl alcohol substrates were selectively coordinated to the unsaturated metal clusters adjacent to eosin Y, which ensured that the excited eosin Y rapidly activated substrates to generate carbon radicals by the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process. The rapid electron transfer (ET) simultaneously produced reactive oxygen species (O2•-) and then a combination of both to further promote the generation of benzaldehydes. The weak interaction of benzaldehydes with the skeleton allowed it to dissociate rapidly, thus preventing overoxidation. Under the catalysis of EY@MOF-808, the selectivity of various benzaldehydes was more than 99%. In contrast, eosin Y gave only benzoic acid products under the same conditions, which demonstrated the superiority of regulatory selectivity of EY@MOF-808. Taking advantage of the heterogeneity of the MOF, EY@MOF-808 was recycled four times without a decrease in its selectivity and avoided the quenching effect of eosin Y. The organic functional units postdecorated MOF-based photocatalyst strategy exhibits a promising new perspective approach to sustainably regulating the selectivity of inert oxidation.

Bridging Atom Engineering for Low-Temperature Oxygen Activation in a Robust Metal-Organic Framework

Achieving active site engineering at the atomic level poses a significant challenge in the design and optimization of catalysts for energy-efficient catalytic processes, especially for a reaction with two reactants competitively absorbed on catalytic active sites. Herein, we show an example that tailoring the local environment of cobalt sites in a robust metal-organic framework through substituting the bridging atom from -Cl to -OH group leads to a highly active catalyst for oxygen activation in an oxidation reaction. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that this variation imparts drastic changes on the electronic structure of metal centers, the competitive reactant adsorption behavior, and the intermediate formation. As a result, exceptional low-temperature CO oxidation performance was achieved with T25(Temperature for 25 % conversion)=35 °C and T100 (Temperature for 100 % conversion)=150 °C, which stands out from existing MOF-based catalysts and even rivals many noble metal catalysts. This work provides a guidance for the rational design of catalysts for efficient oxygen activation for an oxidation reaction.

Selective oxidation of β-keto ester modulated by the d-band centers in D-A conjugated microporous metallaphotoredox catalysts containing M-salen (MZn, Cu and Co) and triazine monomers

Photocatalytic selective oxidation plays an important role in developing green chemistry. However, it is challenging to design an efficient photocatalyst for controlling the selectivity of photocatalytic oxidation reaction and exploring its detailed mechanism. Here, we synthesized three conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with D-A structures, named M-SATE-CMPs (MZn, Cu and Co), with different d-band centers based on different metal centers, resulting in the discrepancy in adsorption and activation capacities for the reactants, which produces the selectivity of β-keto esters being catalyzed into α-hydroperoxide β-keto esters (ROOH) or to α-hydroxyl β-keto esters (ROH). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrate that the adsorption and activation capacities of the metal active centers in M-SATE-CMPs (MZn, Cu and Co) for ROOH are the key factors to influence the photocatalytic selective oxidation of β-keto ester. This study provides a promising strategy for designing a metallaphotoredox catalyst whose photocatalytic selectivity depends on the d-band center of metal site in the catalyst.

Two 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Purine Carboxylic Acid Ligands for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Sulfides and CO2 Chemical Fixation

Two two-dimensional (2D) layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, {[Yb(L)(H2O)2NO3]·2H2O}n (Yb-MOF) and [Er(L)(H2O)3Cl]n (Er-MOF) (H2L = 5-((6H-purin-6-yl)amino)isophthalic acid), were constructed by a solvothermal method and characterized. The catalytic performance study showed that the Yb-MOF could efficiently catalyze the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under 15 W light-emitting diode (LED) blue light irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and free-radical trapping experiments demonstrated that the photocatalytic reaction process involved •O2-, and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. Moreover, Er-MOF exhibited good catalytic efficiency and excellent substrate tolerance in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2, and the reaction conditions were mild. After 5 cycles, the catalytic activities of two MOFs did not significantly decrease, and the framework structures remained unchanged. Therefore, the Yb-MOF and Er-MOF were considered efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts.

Phenanthroline-functionalized donor-acceptor covalent organic frameworks as photo-responsive nanozymes for visual colorimetric detection of isoniazid

Development of metal-free nanozymes has raised concern for their extensive applications in photocatalysis and sensing fields. As novel metal-free nanomaterials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have engendered intense interest in the construction of nanozymes due to their structural controllability and molecular functionality. The formation of the molecular arrangement by embedding orderly donor-acceptors (D-A) linked in the framework topology to modulate material properties for highly efficient enzyme mimicking activity is of importance but challenging. Here, a strong D-A type of COF was designed and synthesized by integrating electron donor units (pyrene) and electron acceptor units (phenanthroline), named Py-PD COF. Using experiments and theoretical calculations, the introduction of a phenanthroline ring endowed the Py-PD COF with a narrowed band gap, and efficient charge transfer and separation. Further, the Py-PD COF exhibited a superior light-responsive oxidase-mimicking characteristic under visible light irradiation, which could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and give the corresponding evolution of color. The nanoenzymatic activity of the Py-PD COF was light-regulated, which offers a fascinating advantage because of its high efficiency and spatial controllability. Based on previously mentioned characteristics, an "on-off" sensing platform for the colorimetric analysis of isoniazid (INH) could be constructed with a good linear relationship (2-100 μM) and a low limit of detection (1.26 μM). This research shows that not only is Py-PD COF an environmentally friendly compound for the colorimetric detection of INH, but it is also capable of providing the interesting D-A type COF-based material for designing an excellent nanozyme.

Multifunctional Metal-Organic Frameworks as Catalysts for Tandem Reactions

Owing to well-defined structure as well as easy synthesis and modification, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts for tandem reactions. In this article, we aim to summarize the development of multifunctional MOFs, including mixed metal MOFs, MOFs that are synergistically catalyzed by metal nodes and organic linkers, MOFs loaded with metal nanoparticles, etc, as heterogenous catalysts for tandem reactions over the past five years. This concept briefly discusses on present challenges, future trends, and prospects of multifunctional MOFs catalysts in tandem reactions.

Extraction of Uranium by a Pyrazole-Based Porous Organic Polymer

In this work, we report a pyrazole-based porous organic polymer (namely, ECUT-POP-2) for extraction of uranium. ECUT-POP-2 affords a high uranium extraction capacity of up to 1851 mg/g, excellent selectivity, and good reusability, suggesting its superior application in treating uranium-containing wastewater and acquring nuclear fuel.

Naphthalene-based donor-acceptor covalent organic frameworks as an electron distribution regulator for boosting photocatalysis

By incorporating the electron-rich naphthalene and electron-deficient triazine as an electron donor and an electron acceptor, a new donor-acceptor covalent organic framework as an electron distribution regulator was obtained for boosting photocatalytically oxidative coupling of benzylamines and selective oxidation of thioethers under the irradiation of green light (520 nm).

DNA-Directed Assembly of Hierarchical MOF-Cellulose Nanofiber Microbioreactors with "Branch-Fruit" Structures

Assembling metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into ordered multidimensional porous superstructures promises the encapsulation of enzymes for heterogeneous biocatalysts. However, the full potential of this approach has been limited by the poor stability of enzymes and the uncontrolled assembly of MOF nanoparticles onto suitable supports. In this study, a novel and exceptionally robust Ni-imidazole-based MOF was synthesized in water at room temperature, enabling in situ enzyme encapsulation. Based on this MOF platform, we developed a DNA-directed assembly strategy to achieve the uniform placement of MOF nanoparticles onto bacterial cellulose nanofibers, resulting in a distinctive "branch-fruit" structure. The resulting hybrid materials demonstrated remarkable versatility across various catalytic systems, accommodating natural enzymes, nanoenzymes, and multienzyme cascades, thus showcasing enormous potential as universal microbioreactors. Furthermore, the hierarchical composites facilitated rapid diffusion of the bulky substrate while maintaining the enzyme stability, with ∼3.5-fold higher relative activity compared to the traditional enzyme@MOF immobilized in bacterial cellulose nanofibers.

Organic Donor-Acceptor Systems for Photocatalysis

Organic semiconductor materials are considered to be promising photocatalysts due to their excellent light absorption by chromophores, easy molecular structure tuning, and solution-processable properties. In particular, donor-acceptor (D-A) type organic photocatalytic materials synthesized by introducing D and A units intra- or intermolecularly, have made great progress in photocatalytic studies. More and more studies have demonstrated that the D-A type organic photocatalytic materials combine effective carrier separation, tunable bandgap, and sensitive optoelectronic response, and are considered to be an effective strategy for enhancing light absorption, improving exciton dissociation, and optimizing carrier transport. This review provides a thorough overview of D-A strategies aimed at optimizing the photocatalytic performance of organic semiconductors. Initially, essential methods for modifying organic photocatalytic materials, such as interface engineering, crystal engineering, and interaction modulation, are briefly discussed. Subsequently, the review delves into various organic photocatalytic materials based on intramolecular and intermolecular D-A interactions, encompassing small molecules, conjugated polymers, crystalline polymers, supramolecules, and organic heterojunctions. Meanwhile, the energy band structures, exciton dynamics, and redox-active sites of D-A type organic photocatalytic materials under different bonding modes are discussed. Finally, the review highlights the advanced applications of organic photocatalystsand outlines prospective challenges and opportunities.

Controlled Sequential Doping of Metal Nanocluster

Atomically precise doping of metal nanoclusters provides excellent opportunities not only for subtly tailoring their properties but also for in-depth understanding of composition (structure)-property correlation of metal nanoclusters and has attracted increasing interest partly due to its significance for fundamental research and practical applications. Although single and multiple metal atom doping of metal nanoclusters (NCs) has been achieved, sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping is still a big challenge and has not yet been reported. Herein, by introducing a second ligand, a novel multistep synthesis method was developed, controlled sequential single-to-multiple metal atom doping was successfully achieved for the first time, and three doped NCs Au25Cd1(p-MBT)17(PPh3)2, Au18Cd2(p-MBT)14(PPh3)2, and [Au19Cd3(p-MBT)18]- (p-MBTH: para-methylbenzenethiol) were obtained, including two novel NCs that were precisely characterized via mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and so forth. Furthermore, sequential doping-induced evolutions in the atomic and crystallographic structures and optical and catalytic properties of NCs were revealed.

Thiadiazole-Functionalized Th/Zr-UiO-66 for Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Adsorptive separation technology provides an effective approach for separating gases with similar physicochemical properties, such as the purification of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2). The high designability and tunability of metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents make them ideal design platforms for this challenging separation. Herein, we employ an isoreticular functionalization strategy to fine-tune the pore environment of Zr- and Th-based UiO-66 by the immobilization of the benzothiadiazole group via bottom-up synthesis. The functionalized UPC-120 exhibits an enhanced C2H2/CO2 separation performance, which is confirmed by adsorption isotherms, dynamic breakthrough curves, and theoretical simulations. The synergy of ligand functionalization and metal ion fine-tuning guided by isoreticular chemistry provides a new perspective for the design and development of adsorbents for challenging gas separation processes.

Highly Emissive and Robust Cd-Based MOF with an Unprecedented Topology for Tetracycline Sensing

Herein, an unprecedented cadmium-based metal-organic framework (JNU-106) fabricated by utilizing pyrazole-functionalized tetraphenylethylene ligands (Py-TPE) and rod-shaped secondary building units is reported, possessing a new (3,3,3,6,6,8)-connected topological network. Thanks to the ingeniously designed intramolecular charge transfer behavior, which originates from the congruent coplanarity between Py and TPE, JNU-106 exhibits intense green luminescence with a quantum yield increased by 1.5 times. The phenomenon of remarkable fluorescence quenching of JNU-106 reveals that it possesses extremely high anti-interference performance, superior sensitivity, and dedicated selectivity toward tetracycline antibiotics (TCAs) in aqueous solutions, which are comparable to those of the state-of-the-art porous sensing compounds. Taking the theoretical calculations and experimental results into account, the luminescence quenching is mainly attributed to the internal filtration effect and the static quenching effect. Considering the portable and rapid performance of JNU-106-based testing strips for sensing TCAs, the fabricated JNU-106 provides an alternative for ecological monitoring and environmental governance.

Photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds

In modern industries, the aerobic oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds to achieve the value-added conversion of hydrocarbons requires high temperatures and pressures, which significantly increases energy consumption and capital investment. The development of a light-driven strategy, even under natural sunlight and ambient air, is therefore of great significance. Here we develop a series of hetero-motif molecular junction photocatalysts containing two bifunctional motifs. With these materials, the reduction of O2 and oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds can be effectively accomplished, thus realizing efficient aerobic oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds in e.g., toluene and ethylbenzene. Especially for ethylbenzene oxidation reactions, excellent catalytic capacity (861 mmol g cat-1) is observed. In addition to the direct oxidation of C(sp3)-H bonds, CeBTTD-A can also be applied to other types of aerobic oxidation reactions highlighting their potential for industrial applications.

Tuning the Catalytic Activity of Covalent Metal-Organic Frameworks for CO2 Cycloaddition Reactions

The development of efficient, recyclable and low-cost heterogeneous catalysts for conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into epoxides is highly desired, yet remain a challenge. Herein, we have prepared three two-dimensional (2D) copper(I) cyclic trinuclear units (Cu(I)-CTUs) based covalent metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs), namely JNM-13, JNM-14, and JNM-15, via a one-pot reaction by combination of coordination and dynamic covalent chemistry. Among them, JNM-15 contained the highest density of copper catalytic sites, and exhibited the highest capacity for adsorption of CO2 . More interestingly, JNM-15 delivered the highest catalytic activity for cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides with good yields (up to 99 %), good substrate compatibility (11 examples) and reusability (four catalytic cycles) under mild condition.

Metal-organic framework boosts heterogeneous electron donor-acceptor catalysis

Metal-organic framework (MOF) is a class of porous materials providing an excellent platform for engineering heterogeneous catalysis. We herein report the design of MOF Zr-PZDB consisting of Zr6-clusters and PZDB (PZDB = 4,4'-(phenazine-5,10-diyl)dibenzoate) linkers, which served as the heterogeneous donor catalyst for enhanced electron donor-acceptor (EDA) photoactivation. The high local concentration of dihydrophenazine active centers in Zr-PZDB can promote the EDA interaction, therefore resulting in superior catalytic performance over homogeneous counterparts. The crowded environment of Zr-PZDB can protect the dihydrophenazine active center from being attacked by radical species. Zr-PZDB efficiently catalyzes the Minisci-type reaction of N-heterocycles with a series of C-H coupling partners, including ethers, alcohols, non-activated alkanes, amides, and aldehydes. Zr-PZDB also enables the coupling reaction of aryl sulfonium salts with heterocycles. The catalytic activity of Zr-PZDB extends to late-stage functionalization of bioactive and drug molecules, including Nikethamide, Admiral, and Myristyl Nicotinate. Systematical spectroscopy study and analysis support the EDA interaction between Zr-PZDB and pyridinium salt or aryl sulfonium salt, respectively. Photoactivation of the MOF-based EDA adduct triggers an intra-complex single electron transfer from donor to acceptor, giving open-shell radical species for cross-coupling reactions. This research represents the first example of MOF-enabled heterogeneous EDA photoactivation.

Pyrazine Functionalization in Eu-MOF for Exclusive Ratiometric Luminescence Sensing of PO43

Single-emission luminescence sensors are less than satisfactory for complex systems due to their susceptibility to environmental disturbances. Lanthanum-based metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with highly stable ratiometric dual-emission are regarded as promising luminescence probes owing to their fascinating ligand-to-metal energy transfer behaviors (also known as the antenna effect). Herein, we report the synthesis of a pair of isostructural europium-based MOFs (termed JNU-219 and JNU-220) by utilizing two X-shaped tetracarboxylate linkers, 4,4',4″,4‴-benzene-2,3,5,6-tetrayl-tetrabenzoate (BTEB) and 4,4',4″,4‴-pyrazine-2,3,5,6-tetrayl-tetrabenzoate (BTTB). Both JNU-219 and JNU-220 present the characteristic red luminescence of Eu3+, yet the pyrazine functionalization of the BTTB linker renders JNU-220 with significantly increased luminescence emission, almost 30 times that of JNU-219. As a result, the detection limit of JNU-220 for the ratiometric luminescence sensing of PO43- was determined to be as low as 0.22 μM, which is far superior to those of other reported MOF materials. Additionally, we demonstrate the excellent stability and reusability of JNU-220, further verifying its potential as a robust ratiometric luminescence probe.

Reticular framework materials for photocatalytic organic reactions

Photocatalytic organic reactions, harvesting solar energy to produce high value-added organic chemicals, have attracted increasing attention as a sustainable approach to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. Reticular framework materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are widely considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis owing to their high crystallinity, tailorable pore environment and extensive structural diversity. Although the design and synthesis of MOFs and COFs have been intensively developed in the last 20 years, their applications in photocatalytic organic transformations are still in the preliminary stage, making their systematic summary necessary. Thus, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable MOF and COF photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic organic reactions. The commonly used reactions are categorized to facilitate the identification of suitable reaction types. From a practical viewpoint, the fundamentals of experimental design, including active species, performance evaluation and external reaction conditions, are discussed in detail for easy experimentation. Furthermore, the latest advances in photocatalytic organic reactions of MOFs and COFs, including their composites, are comprehensively summarized according to the actual active sites, together with the discussion of their structure-property relationship. We believe that this study will be helpful for researchers to design novel reticular framework photocatalysts for various organic synthetic applications.

Incorporating a D-A-D-Type Benzothiadiazole Photosensitizer into MOFs for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Phenylsulfides and Benzylamines

Oxidation and removal of highly toxic sulfides and amines are particularly important for environmental and human security but remain challenging. Here, incorporating an excellent photosensitizer, donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D)-type 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic (H2L), into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been manifested to promote the charge separation, affording four three-dimensional (3D) MOFs (isostructural 1-Co/1-Zn with Co2/Zn2 units, and 2-Gd/2-Tb with Gd/Tb-cluster chains) as photocatalysts in the visible light-driven air-O2-mediated catalytic oxidation and removal of hazardous phenylsulfides and benzylamines. Impressively, structure-property correlation illustrated that the transition metal centers assembled in MOFs play an important role in the photocatalytic activity, and we can conclude that 1-Zn can be a robust heterogeneous catalyst possessing good light adsorption and fast charge separation in oxidation removal reactions of both benzylamines and phenylsulfides under visible light irradiation and room temperature with excellent activity/selectivity, stability, and reusability.

Drug release and solubility properties of two zeolitic metal-organic frameworks influenced by their hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown significant potential for drug delivery applications. However, there remains a scarcity of comprehensive research addressing the influence of surface properties of MOFs on drug release kinetics and drug solubility. This study focuses on examining the influence of MOFs hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity on the controlled release and solubility of drugs. To achieve this, we prepared drug-loaded nanoparticles through in situ synthesis and created a drug-MOF co-amorphous system using the ball milling technique. Under neutral conditions, the hydrophilic MOF-based drug delivery system demonstrated a comparatively slower drug release profile than its hydrophobic counterpart. This observation suggests that the hydrophilic system holds promise in mitigating drug side effects by enabling improved control over drug release. The implementation of hydrophobic MOFs in co-amorphous systems yields a more pronounced effect on enhancing solubility compared to hydrophilic MOFs. This study offers valuable insights for achieving optimal drug release kinetics and solubility by delicately manipulating surface properties of MOFs.

Linker Engineering of Sandwich-Structured Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Optimized Photocatalytic H2 Production

While the microenvironment around catalytic sites is recognized to be crucial in thermocatalysis, its roles in photocatalysis remain subtle. In this work, a series of sandwich-structured metal-organic framework (MOF) composites, UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-X (X means functional groups), is rationally constructed for visible-light photocatalytic H2 production. By varying the ─X groups of the UiO-66-X shell, the microenvironment of the Pt sites and photosensitive UiO-66-NH2 core can be simultaneously modulated. Significantly, the MOF composites with identical light absorption and Pt loading present distinctly different photocatalytic H2 production rates, following the ─X group sequence of ─H > ─Br > ─NA (naphthalene) > ─OCH3  > ─Cl > ─NO2 . UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-H demonstrates H2 production rate up to 2708.2 µmol g-1  h-1 , ≈222 times that of UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-NO2 . Mechanism investigations suggest that the variation of the ─X group can balance the charge separation of the UiO-66-NH2 core and the proton reduction ability of Pt, leading to an optimal activity of UiO-66-NH2 @Pt@UiO-66-H at the equilibrium point.

Linker Engineering for Reactive Oxygen Species Generation Efficiency in Ultra-Stable Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Interfacial charge transfer on the surface of heterogeneous photocatalysts dictates the efficiency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and therefore the efficiency of aerobic oxidation reactions. Reticular chemistry in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allows for the rational design of donor-acceptor pairs to optimize interfacial charge-transfer kinetics. Herein, we report a series of isostructural fcu-topology Ni8-MOFs (termed JNU-212, JNU-213, JNU-214, and JNU-215) with linearly bridged bipyrazoles as organic linkers. These crystalline Ni8-MOFs can maintain their structural integrity in 7 M NaOH at 100 °C for 24 h. Experimental studies reveal that linker engineering by tuning the electron-accepting capacity of the pyrazole-bridging units renders these Ni8-MOFs with significantly improved charge separation and transfer efficiency under visible-light irradiation. Among them, the one containing a benzoselenadiazole unit (JNU-214) exhibits the best photocatalytic performance in the aerobic oxidation of benzylamines with a conversion rate of 99% in 24 h. Recycling experiments were carried out to confirm the stability and reusability of JNU-214 as a robust heterogeneous catalyst. Significantly, the systematic modulation of the electron-accepting capacity of the bridging units in donor-acceptor-donor MOFs provides a new pathway to develop viable noble-metal-free heterogeneous photocatalysts for aerobic oxidation reactions.

Size- and Emission-Controlled Synthesis of Full-Color Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks for Tryptophan Detection

The development of nanoscaled luminescent metal-organic frameworks (nano-LMOFs) with organic linker-based emission to explore their applications in sensing, bioimaging and photocatalysis is of great interest as material size and emission wavelength both have remarkable influence on their performances. However, there is lack of platforms that can systematically tune the emission and size of nano-LMOFs with customized linker design. Herein two series of fcu- and csq-type nano-LMOFs, with precise size control in a broad range and emission colors from blue to near-infrared, were prepared using 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and its derivative based ditopic- and tetratopic carboxylic acids as the emission sources. The modification of tetratopic carboxylic acids using OH and NH2 as the substituent groups not only induces significant emission bathochromic shift of the resultant MOFs, but also endows interesting features for their potential applications. As one example, we show that the non-substituted and NH2 -substituted nano-LMOFs exhibit turn-off and turn-on responses for highly selective and sensitive detection of tryptophan over other nineteen natural amino acids. This work sheds light on the rational construction of nano-LMOFs with specific emission behaviours and sizes, which will undoubtedly facilitate their applications in related areas.

A Photosensitizing Metal-Organic Framework as a Tandem Reaction Catalyst for Primary Alcohols from Terminal Alkenes and Alkynes

Owing to the wide and growing demand for primary alcohols, the development of efficient catalysts with high regioselectivity remains a worthwhile pursuit. However, according to Markovnikov's rule, it is a challenge to obtain primary alcohols with high yields and regioselectivity from terminal alkenes or alkynes. Herein, we report the synthesis of a photosensitizing two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) from cyclic trinuclear copper(I) units (Cu-CTUs) and a boron dipyrro-methene (Bodipy) ligand. The MOF features broadband light absorption, excellent photoinduced charge separation efficiency, and photochemical properties. By integrating the copper-catalyzed hydroboration and photocatalyzed aerobic oxidation, it can catalyze terminal alkenes and alkynes to produce primary alcohols via a one-pot tandem reaction with excellent regioselectivity, good overall yields in two-step reactions (up to 85 %), broad substrate compatibility (32 examples) and good reusability under mild conditions.

Mesoporous Mixed-Metal-Organic Framework Incorporating a [Ru(Phen)3]2+ Photosensitizer for Highly Efficient Aerobic Photocatalytic Oxidative Coupling of Amines

[Ru(Phen)₃]²⁺ (phen = phenanthroline) as a very classical photosensitizer possesses strong absorption in the visible range and facilitates photoinduced electron transfer, which plays a vital role in regulating photochemical reactions. However, it remains a significant challenge to utilize more adequately and exploit more efficiently the ruthenium-based materials due to the uniqueness, scarcity, and nonrenewal of the noble metal. Here, we integrate the intrinsic advantages of the ruthenium-based photosensitizer and mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (meso-MOFs) into a [Ru(Phen)₃]²⁺ photosensitizer-embedded heterometallic Ni(II)/Ru(II) meso-MOF (LTG-NiRu) via the metalloligand approach. LTG-NiRu, with an extremely robust framework and a large one-dimensional (1D) channel, not only makes ruthenium photosensitizer units anchored in the inner wall of meso-MOF tubes to circumvent the problem of product/catalyst separation and recycling of catalysts in heterogeneous systems but also exhibits exceptional activities for the aerobic photocatalytic oxidative coupling of amine derivatives as a general photocatalyst. The conversion of the light-induced oxidative coupling reaction for various benzylamines is ∼100% in 1 h, and more than 20 chemical products generated by photocatalytic oxidative cycloaddition of N-substituted maleimides and N,N-dimethylaniline can be synthesized easily in the presence of LTG-NiRu upon visible light irradiation. Moreover, recycling experiments demonstrate that LTG-NiRu is an excellent heterogeneous photocatalyst with high stability and excellent reusability. LTG-NiRu represents a great potential photosensitizer-based meso-MOF platform with an efficient aerobic photocatalytic oxidation function that is convenient for gram-scale synthesis.

Access to thiionized-, selenolized-, and alkylated 5-alkylidene 3-pyrrolin-2-one derivatives via a regioselective oxidative annulation reaction

A metal-free regioselective oxidative annulation reaction of readily available 2,4-pentanediones with primary amines has been described. This protocol provides a divergent strategy for the incorporation of various radical donors into 5-alkylidene 3-pyrrolin-2-one skeletons, producing a variety of thiionized-, selenolized-, and alkylated 5-alkylidene 3-pyrrolin-2-one derivatives. Moreover, the diverse synthetic transformations of the 5-alkylidene 3-pyrrolin-2-one products were also investigated.

Bodipy-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks Transformed in Solid States from 1D Chains to 2D Layer Structures as Efficient Visible Light Heterogeneous Photocatalysts for Forging C-B and C-C Bonds

Boron dipyrromethene (also known as bodipy), as a class of versatile and robust fluorophores and a structural analogue of porphyrins, has received a great deal of interests in the field of light-harvesting and energy-transfer processes. However, the fabrication of bodipy monomers into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and the exploitation of their potential still lags behind the porphyrin MOFs. In this work, two bodipy-based MOFs, BMOF 1D with 1D chain structure and BMOF 2D with 2D layer structure, were assembled by using dicarboxyl-functionalized bodipy ligands. BMOF 1D can also be converted to BMOF 2D by inserting additional ligands into BMOF 1D to cross-link the adjacent chains into the rhombic grid layer. During this process, spontaneous exfoliation occurred simultaneously and resulted in the formation of several hundred nanometer thickness BMOF 2D (nBMOF 2D), which can be further exfoliated into one-layer MOF nanosheets (BMON 2D) by using the ultrasonic liquid exfoliation method in a high yield. Featuring the distinct bodipy scaffolds in the porous frameworks, both BMOF 2D and BMON 2D displayed high reactivity and recyclability in the photocatalytic inverse hydroboration and cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions to afford α-amino organoborons and α-amino amides in moderate to high yields. This work not only highlights the cascade utilization of ligand installation and ultrasonic liquid exfoliation methods to provide the single-layer MOF sheets in high yields but also advances the bodipy-based MOFs as a new type of heterogeneous photocatalysts in the forging of C-B and C-C bonds driven by visible light.

Constructing a Photocatalyst for Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol to Benzaldehyde by Photo-Fenton-like Catalysis

A photoactive metal-organic framework (MOF), [K(H₂O)][Cu(DPNDI)][Cu(DPNDI)(CH₃CN)(H₂O)] [Cu_1.5(DPNDI)_1.5H_1.5P₂W₁₈O₆₂]·2H₂O (Cu(Ι)W-DPNDI), was prepared by combining a functional photosensitizer N, N'-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)naphthalene diimide (DPNDI), copper(I) ions, and an oxidation catalyst [P₂W₁₈O₆₂]^6- into a single framework via a hydrothermal process. Cu(Ι)W-DPNDI exhibited a stable structure, strong light absorption capacity, a suitable band gap, and photoelectric properties, which provided favorable conditions for photocatalysis. In the confined space, the well-aligned Cu(I) ions and POM polyanions played a synergetic effect in the electron-transfer process and reactive oxygen species generation. By coupling photocatalysis and heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysis, Cu(Ι)W-DPNDI displayed high efficiency for the selective oxidation of aromatic alcohols, with up to >99% selectivity and 75% yield.

Building a cobaloxime-based metal-organic framework for photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of arylboronic acids to phenols

Herein, the design and synthesis of an unprecedented cobaloxime-based zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-TCPCo) with an she net is reported. This heterogeneous material as a photocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for aerobic oxidation of arylboronic acids to phenols. Recycling experiments demonstrate the stability and reusability of Zr-TCPCo as a robust catalyst.

Anion-Directed Self-Assembly of Calix[4]arene-Based Silver(I) Coordination Polymers and Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Coordination polymers (CPs) have recently emerged as promising candidates for heterogeneous photocatalysis due to their structural designability and tunable properties. Herein, we developed two novel Ag(I)-calix[4]arene coordination polymers with the formula {[Ag₂(μ-NO₃)L¹]}_n (CP 1) and {[AgL¹]·PF₆}_n (CP 2) (L¹ = 2-mercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole resorcinol calix[4]arene). Crystallography revealed that anion coordination and self-inclusion behavior induced the cavitand and silver ions to self-assemble into well-defined CPs 1 and 2 with different topological coordination frameworks, respectively. Furthermore, CPs 1 and 2 display high photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under mild conditions (WLED and UV irradiation). The comparison results demonstrate that CP 1 exhibited better photocatalytic performance than CP 2, which correlated well with the differences in their molecular structure and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps. The photocatalysis products and possible intermediates were successfully monitored and determined using mass spectrum, gas chromatography, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The rational photocatalysis mechanism was further investigated and proposed.

Enhancing the spatial separation of photogenerated charges on Fe-based MOFs via structural regulation for highly-efficient photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction

Although iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) have displayed the photocatalytic activity, there is still abundant room for improving their photocatalytic performance through tuning the structures. In this work, four novel iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) were successfully synthesized via ligand modulation for better photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction, in which MTBDC-TPT-Fe had the highest catalytic activity (MTBDC = 2,5-bis(methylthio)terephthalic acid, TPT = 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)- 1,3,5-triazine). The boosted photocatalytic reduction may be mainly ascribed to the enhanced electron push-pull effect between iron-oxygen clusters and organic ligands. The introduction of -SCH₃ groups can enhance the light absorption and donate electrons to iron center under visible-light irradiation, meanwhile the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers can be enhanced resulting from the electron-pulling effect when introducing TPT. Moreover, enhanced specific surface areas and positive skeleton charge due to the introduction of TPT may improve active sites exposure and Cr(VI) adsorption, thereby enhancing photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction activity without the presence of any assisted scavengers. In addition, the photocatalytic mechanism (i.e. active species) were also studied and presented. This work confirmed an effective structure-performance regulation strategy on Fe-MOFs for photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction.

Preparation of Ni@UiO-66 incorporated polyethersulfone (PES) membrane by magnetic field assisted strategy to improve permeability and photocatalytic self-cleaning ability

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as promising nanofillers to fabricate mixed matrix membranes for water treatment. However, manipulating distribution of MOFs nanoparticles in the membrane matrix remains a great challenge. In this study, UiO-66 was firstly coated by magnetic Ni via an in-situ reduction reaction, and then incorporated into polyethersulfone (PES) membrane matrix to prepare PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane. The magnetic Ni allowed to manipulate the distribution of magnetic Ni@UiO-66 in the phase-inversion process by an external magnetic field. The hydrophilic Ni@UiO-66 can be pulled onto membrane surface by the magnetic force, endowing the prepared membrane with rather higher hydrophilicity. The prepared membrane exhibited superior water permeability with a pure water flux of 611.5 ± 19.8 L·m^-2·h^-1 and improved antifouling performance. Moreover, benifiting from photocatalytic activity of the exposed Ni@UiO-66 on membrane surface, the obtained PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane demonstrated excellent photocatalytic self-cleaning ability with a flux recovery rate (FRR) higher than 95% under UV irradiation. Analyzing by extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory indicated that the improved antifouling performance could be attributed to less attractive or even repulsive interaction between the prepared membrane and pollutants. This work provided valuable guidance for structural regulation and development of high-performance MOFs-based membranes for water treatment.

Photocatalytic Biocidal Coatings Featuring Zr6Ti4-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The world is currently suffering socially, economically, and politically from the recent pandemic outbreak due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and those in hospitals, schools, and elderly nursing homes face enhanced threats. Healthcare textiles, such as masks and medical staff gowns, are susceptible to contamination of various pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can potentially address these challenges due to their tunable reactivity and ability to be incorporated as porous coatings on textile materials. Here, we report how incorporating titanium into the zirconium-pyrene-based MOF NU-1000, denoted as NU-1012, generates a highly reactive biocidal photocatalyst. This MOF features a rare ligand migration phenomenon, and both the Ti/Zr center and the pyrene linker act synergistically as dual active centers and widen the absorption band for this material, which results in enhanced reactive oxygen species generation upon visible light irradiation. Additionally, we found that the ligand migration process is generally applicable to other csq topology Zr-MOFs. Importantly, NU-1012 can be easily incorporated onto cotton textile cloths as a coating, and the resulting composite material demonstrates fast and potent biocidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermidis), and T7 bacteriophage virus with up to a 7-log(99.99999%) reduction within 1 h under simulated daylight.

Freestanding 2D NiFe Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets: Facilitating Proton Transfer via Organic Ligands for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to electrochemical hydrogen production. However, designing and fabricating efficient electrocatalysts still remains challenging. By confinedly coordinating organic ligands with metal species in layered double hydroxides (LDHs), an innovative LDHs-assisted approach is developed to facilely synthesize freestanding bimetallic 2D metal-organic framework nanosheets (2D MOF NSs), preserving the metallic components and activities in OER. Furthermore, the research has demonstrated that the incorporation of carboxyl organic ligands coordinated with metal atoms as proton transfer mediators endow 2D MOF NSs with efficient proton transfer during the electrochemical OH_ads  → O_ads transition. These freestanding NiFe-2D MOF NSs require a small overpotential of 260 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 . When this strategy is applied to LDH nanosheets grown on nickel foam, the overpotential can be reduced to 221 mV. This outstanding OER activity supports the capability of multimetallic organic frameworks for the rational design of water oxidation electrocatalysts. This strategy provides a universal path to the synthesis of 2D MOF NSs that can be used as electrocatalysts directly.

Trace removal of benzene vapour using double-walled metal-dipyrazolate frameworks

In principle, porous physisorbents are attractive candidates for the removal of volatile organic compounds such as benzene by virtue of their low energy for the capture and release of this pollutant. Unfortunately, many physisorbents exhibit weak sorbate-sorbent interactions, resulting in poor selectivity and low uptake when volatile organic compounds are present at trace concentrations. Herein, we report that a family of double-walled metal-dipyrazolate frameworks, BUT-53 to BUT-58, exhibit benzene uptakes at 298 K of 2.47-3.28 mmol g^-1 at <10 Pa. Breakthrough experiments revealed that BUT-55, a supramolecular isomer of the metal-organic framework Co(BDP) (H₂BDP = 1,4-di(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)benzene), captures trace levels of benzene, producing an air stream with benzene content below acceptable limits. Furthermore, BUT-55 can be regenerated with mild heating. Insight into the performance of BUT-55 comes from the crystal structure of the benzene-loaded phase (C₆H₆@BUT-55) and density functional theory calculations, which reveal that C-H···X interactions drive the tight binding of benzene. Our results demonstrate that BUT-55 is a recyclable physisorbent that exhibits high affinity and adsorption capacity towards benzene, making it a candidate for environmental remediation of benzene-contaminated gas mixtures.
