Abstract
The arene cyclopropanation between diazo compounds and benzene is well known to produce a tautomeric mixture of norcaradiene and cycloheptatriene in favour of the latter species. Nevertheless, previous studies have suggested that the initially formed norcaradiene can be stabilized by a C-7 cyano group with prevention of its 6π-electrocyclic ring opening. According to this feature, a synthetic route to functionalized cyclohexadienes has been designed using α-cyanodiazoacetates and α-diazo-β-ketonitriles as the starting materials, respectively. The Rh2(esp)2-catalyzed arene cyclopropanation of α-cyanodiazoacetates in benzene afforded the expected 7-alkoxycarbonyl-7-cyanonorcaradienes as isolable compounds, which then served as templates for the second cyclopropanation with ethyl diazoacetate or α-cyanodiazocarbonyls to enable the formation of bis(cyclopropanated) adducts. Their subsequent treatment with SmI2 triggered a double ring-opening process, allowing for the generation of 1,4- and/or 1,3-cyclohexadienes as either regio- or diastereomeric mixtures. On the other hand, the norcaradienes generated from phenyl- or methyl-substituted α-diazo-β-ketonitriles were found to undergo an in situ rearrangement to yield dihydrobenzofurans that could be converted to benzofuran derivatives by DDQ oxidation.

Abstract
The dearomative expansion of aromatic rings has long been pursued by chemists due to its potential to provide tractable approaches for synthesizing valuable non-aromatic molecules. To circumvent the conventional use of hazardous and unstable diazo compounds, photochemical synthesis has recently emerged as a promising platform. However, protocols that can effectively handle both arenes and azaarenes remain scarce. Herein, we introduce a generic strategy that efficiently converts β-(aza)aryl-β-substituted enones into biologically significant cycloheptatriene derivatives, including their aza-variants. This method allows for the easy modulation of diverse functional groups on the product and demonstrates a wide substrate scope, evidenced by its excellent tolerance to various drug motifs and good compatibility with five-membered azaarenes undergoing ring expansion. Moreover, DFT calculations of plausible mechanisms have motivated the implementation of an important cascade diradical recombination strategy for 1,3-dienones, thus facilitating the synthesis of valuable 2-oxabicyclo[3.1.0]hex-3-ene derivatives.

Abstract
The catalytic asymmetric [3 + 2] cycloaddition of racemic norcaradienes with quinones to construct multicyclic hydrodibenzofurans was achieved by the use of chiral N,N'-dioxide/metal complex catalysts. Kinetic resolution of norcaradienes accompanied by partial racemization occurred, and one enantiomer in prior acted as the C2 synthon to participate in diastereoselective cycloaddition. An enantiodivergent synthesis via a switch of metal ions was observed when naphthoquinone was used as the partner. DFT calculations revealed the profiles of the cycloaddition processes.

Abstract
A Pd-catalyzed intramolecular dearomative [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of naphthalenes with arylalkynes is developed. The protocol provides a straightforward method to access a range of polycyclic dihydronaphthalenes containing two vicinal all-carbon stereocenters in moderate yields under mild conditions in an air atmosphere. The deuterium labeling experiment suggests a pathway involving electrophilic dearomatization followed by Friedel-Crafts cyclization. Several synthetic transformations of the product were conducted to demonstrate the utility of this reaction.

Abstract
Herein, the enantioselective synthesis of complex tricyclo[3.2.2.0]nonenes through the Diels-Alder reaction is reported. Utilizing racemic norcaradienes prepared from the visible-light-mediated dearomative cyclopropanation of m-xylene as dienes and enone derivatives as dienophiles, the overall process represents a kinetic asymmetric transformation in the presence of a chiral cobalt(ii) complex of chiral N,N'-dioxide. High diastereo- and enantioselectivity could be obtained in most cycloaddition processes and part racemization of norcaradiene is observed. The topographic steric maps of the catalysts were collected to rationalize the relationship between reactivity and enantioselectivity with the catalysts.

Abstract
Catalytic carbene transfer reactions are fundamental transformations in modern organic synthesis, which enable direct access to diverse structurally complex molecules. Despite diazo precursors playing a crucial role in catalytic carbene transfer reactions, most reported methodologies take into account only diazoacetates or related compounds. This is primarily because diazoalkanes, unless they contain a resonance stabilizing group, are more susceptible to violent exothermic decomposition. In this feature article, we present an alternative approach to carbene-transfer reactions based on the formation of highly electrophilic silver carbenes from N-sulfonylhydrazones, where the high electrophilicity of silver carbenes stems from the weak interaction between silver and the carbenic carbon. These precursors are readily accessible, stable, and environmentally sustainable. Using the strategy that employs highly electrophilic silver carbenes, it is possible to develop novel intermolecular transformations involving non-stabilized carbenes, including C(sp3)-H insertion, C(sp3)-C(O) insertion, cycloaddition, and defluorinative functionalization. The silver-catalyzed carbene transfer reactions described here have high efficiency, unusual reactivity, exceptional selectivity, and a reaction pathway that differs from typical transition metal-catalyzed reactions. Our research provided fundamental insight into silver carbene chemistry, and we hope to apply this mode of catalysis to other more general transformations, including asymmetric transformations.

Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric dearomatization (CADA) reactions is an important synthetic method for constructing enantioenriched complex cyclic systems from simple aromatic feedstocks. However, the CADA reactions of nonactivated arenes, such as naphthalenes and benzenes, have been far less explored than those of electronically activated arenes, such as phenols, naphthols and indoles. Herein, we disclose an asymmetric dearomative cyclopropanation of naphthalenes for the rapid construction of polycyclic compounds. With chiral dirhodium carboxylate as a catalyst, the dearomative cyclopropanation proceeded smoothly under mild conditions and afforded benzonorcaradiene-containing tetracycles in good yield and high enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee). Three stereogenic centers, including two all-carbon quaternary centers, were created in the dearomatization reaction. Moreover, a variety of functional groups are well-tolerated in the reaction. The products could be readily converted into other complex polycycles while maintaining the high ee value.

Abstract
Benzocycloheptenes constitute a common structural motif embedded in many natural products and biologically active compounds. Herein, we report their concise preparation from non‐activated polycyclic arenes using a two‐step sequence involving dearomative [4+2]‐cycloaddition with arenophile in combination with palladium‐catalyzed cyclopropanation, followed by cycloreversion‐initiated ring expansion. The described strategy provides a working alternative to the Buchner reaction, which is limited to monocyclic arenes. Overall, this methylene‐insertion molecular editing approach enables rapid and direct conversion of simple (hetero)arenes into a range of substituted (aza)benzocycloheptatrienes, which can undergo a myriad of downstream functionalizations.

Abstract
![]()
A heteroleptic dirhodium
paddlewheel complex comprising three chiral
carboxylate ligands and one achiral acetamidate ligand has recently
been found to be uniquely effective in catalyzing the asymmetric cyclopropanation
of olefins with α-stannylated (silylated and germylated) α-diazoacetate
derivatives. A number of control experiments in combination with detailed
computational studies provide compelling evidence that an interligand
hydrogen bond between the −NH group of the amidate and the
ester carbonyl group of the reactive rhodium carbene intermediate
plays a quintessential role in the stereodetermining transition state.
The penalty for distorting this array outweighs steric arguments and
renders two of the four conceivable transitions states unviable. Based
on this mechanistic insight, the design of the parent catalyst is
revisited herein: placement of appropriate peripheral substituents
allows high levels of diastereocontrol to be imposed upon cyclopropanation,
which the original catalyst lacks. Because the new complexes allow
either trans- or cis-configured stannylated cyclopropanes to be made
selectively and in excellent optical purity, this transformation also
marks a rare case of diastereodivergent asymmetric catalysis. The
products are amenable to stereospecific cross coupling with aryl halides
or alkenyl triflates; these transformations appear to be the first
examples of the formation of stereogenic quaternary carbon centers
by the Stille reaction; carbonylative coupling is also achieved. Moreover,
tin/lithium exchange affords chiral lithium enolates, which can be
intercepted with a variety of electrophilic partners. The virtues
and inherent flexibility of this new methodology are illustrated by
an efficient synthesis of two salinilactones, extremely scarce bacterial
metabolites with signaling function involved in the self-regulatory
growth inhibition of the producing strain.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of chiral nonracemic diene ligands is facilitated by an enantioselective dearomative intermolecular arene cyclopropanation of anisole. The functionality of the resulting cycloheptatriene engenders distinct chemical environments in a downstream tricyclic bis(enol) triflate that permits selective late-stage functionalization. The synthesis of diverse C1- and pseudo-C2-symmetric dienes is therefore viable by iterative palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. The ligands provide moderate to high selectivities in known Rh(I)-mediated asymmetric transformations.

Abstract
Enantioenriched seven-membered carbocycles are motifs in many molecules of structural and biological interest. We report a simple, practical, transition metal-free and mechanistically unusual method for the enantioselective synthesis of substituted cycloheptatrienes. By forming a coloured enolate with an appropriate absorption band and selectively irradiating in situ, we to initiate a tandem, asymmetric anionic and photochemical ring expansion of readily accessible N-benzylbenzamides. The cascade of reactions leading to the products entails enantioselective benzylic deprotonation with a chiral lithium amide, dearomatizing cyclization of the resulting configurationally defined organolithium to give an extended amide enolate, and photochemically induced formal [1,7]-sigmatropic rearrangement and 6π-electrocyclic ring-opening - the latter all evidently being stereospecific - to deliver enantioenriched cycloheptatrienes with embedded benzylic stereocentres.

Abstract
AbstractA catalytic [3+2]-cycloaddition using Sc(OTf)3 as a Lewis acid catalyst is developed. This catalytic 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition diastereoselectively transforms diazoacetoacetate enones and N-aryl nitrones into highly functionalized isoxazolidines bearing three contiguous chiral centers. The feasibility of the uncatalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition is postulated by DFT calculations and substantiated experimentally.

The high reactivity of the nucleophile allows for fast reactions and low catalyst loading, while a plethora of successfully substituted compounds illustrate the broad scope. Five membered heteroaromatic compounds are also demonstrated to be reactive under similar conditions.

Abstract
The cyclopropanation reaction of 3-diazooxindoles with arenes was first accomplished using visible-light irradiation. A series of spiro[norcaradiene-7,3'-indolin]-2'-ones were synthesized for the first time in high yields and with excellent diastereoselectivities. The synthetic usefulness of this catalyst-free photochemical methodology is illustrated by the further controllable rearrangement and epoxidation reactions.

Abstract
It has been established that an in situ-generated cationic platinum(II)/rac-BINAP complex catalyzes the intramolecular dearomative 5-endo spirocyclization of N-(methylnaphthalenyl)propiolamides via the deprotonation-protonation sequence (formal aromatic ene reaction). Mechanistic studies revealed that our previously reported dearomative 6-endo cyclization followed by the Friedel-Crafts reaction is kinetically and thermodynamically unfavored, and thus, the 5-endo spirocyclization proceeds selectively.

Abstract
Arene dearomatization is a straightforward method for converting an aromatic feedstock into functionalized carbocycles. Enantioselective dearomatizations of chemically inert arenes, however, are quite limited and underexplored relative to those of phenols and indoles. We developed a method for diazo-free generation of silver-carbene species from an ynamide and applied it to the dearomatization of nonactivated arenes. Transiently generated norcaradiene could be trapped by intermolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition, synthesizing polycycles with five consecutive stereogenic centers. This protocol constitutes the first highly enantioselective reaction based on the diazo-free generation of silver-carbene species. Mechanistic investigations revealed a dearomatization followed by two different classes of pericyclic reactions, as well as the origin of the chemo- and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Bicyclic compounds bearing a quaternary stereogenic center have been obtained using asymmetric intramolecular Buchner reaction with excellent yields and level of enantioselectivity. X-ray crystallography determination of the absolute configuration of one product has led to the serendipitous observation of an unusual behavior within the crystal structure, with equilibrating norcaradiene and cycloheptatriene valence isomers at the solid state, as well as an even more unexpected intermediate form. DFT calculations were performed to support these observations.

Abstract
A metal-free C-H [5 + 1] annulation reaction of 2-arylanilines with diazo compounds has been achieved, giving rise to two types of prevalent phenanthridines via highly selective C-C cleavage. Compared to the simple N-H insertion manipulation of diazo, this method elegantly accomplishes a tandem N-H insertion/SEAr/C-C cleavage/aromatization reaction, and the synthetic utility of this new transformation is exemplified by the succinct syntheses of trisphaeridine and bicolorine alkaloids.

Abstract
A chemoselective dearomatization of the less reactive benzenoid unit in β-naphthol was developed. Spirocyclization with a reductant constructs a pivotal structure for drug candidates. One-pot oxidative conversion enabled the tandem dearomatization of β-naphthol, producing conjugated tetraenone variants. The potential utility of the product as an F--selective anion sensor was also demonstrated. Theoretical studies revealed the intermediacy of silver-carbenoid species leading to chemoselective spirocyclization over arene cyclopropanation.

Abstract
An asymmetric dearomatization of indoles bearing α-diazoacetamide functionalities was developed for synthesizing high-value spiro scaffolds. A silver phosphate chemoselectively catalyzed the sterically challenging dearomatization, whereas more typically used metal catalysts for carbene transfer reactions, such as a rhodium complex, were not effective and instead resulted in a Büchner ring expansion or cyclopropanation. Mechanistic studies indicated that the spirocyclization occurred through a silver-assisted asynchronous concerted process and not via a silver-carbene intermediate. Analyses based on natural bond orbital population and a distortion/interaction model indicated that the degree of C-Ag mutual interaction is crucial for achieving a high level of enantiocontrol. In addition, an oxidative disconnection of a C(sp3)-C(sp2) bond in the product provided unconventional access to the corresponding chiral spirooxindole.

Abstract
A Pd-catalyzed dearomative three-component C-C bond formation of bromoarenes with diazo compounds and malonates was developed. Various bromoarenes ranging from benzenoids to azines and heteroles were transformed to the corresponding substituted alicyclic molecules. The key to this reaction is the generation of a benzyl-palladium intermediate, which reacts with malonates to form a Pd-O-enolate species. Strikingly, the present method enabled rapid access to multi-substituted alicycles through subsequent elaboration of dearomatized products.

Abstract
Dearomatization is a fundamental chemical transformation, and it underlies some of the most efficient tactics for generating three-dimensional complexity from basic two-dimensional precursors. The dearomative toolbox, once restricted to only a handful of reactions, has begun to grow more sophisticated as novel methods are added, introducing more functionality under milder conditions and with more control over chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity than ever before. Over the past two decades, major developments in dearomative processes have bolstered significant total-synthesis endeavors and greatly expanded the scope and complexity of chemical building blocks accessible from feedstock arenes. In this Perspective, we highlight some of the recent advances and key challenges that remain in this vibrant area of organic chemistry.
