Analysis of potential migrants from plastic materials in milk by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with liquid-liquid extraction and low-temperature purification

Occurrence and Release of Organophosphite Antioxidants and Novel Organophosphate Esters from Plastic Food Packaging

Organic phosphite antioxidants (OPAs) are widely added in plastic products and can be oxidized to generate oxidized derivatives (OPAs = O), namely organic phosphate esters (OPEs), during production and use processing. Herein, the occurrence of OPEs and OPAs in five plastic food packages was detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Three OPEs (TPhP, TCEP, and AO168 = O) and three OPAs (TPhPi, TCEPi, and AO168) were found in the plastic packages, with concentrations of <MQL-124 ng/g (∑₃OPAs) and 196-831 ng/g (∑₃OPEs), respectively. The migration potential of OPAs and OPEs to food was measured by simulation experiments. OPAs and OPEs in plastic can efficiently migrate to oily simulants, alkaline simulants, and acidic simulants. After 14 days, the total concentration of all OPAs and OPEs in the food simulants reached <MQL-1.21 (acidic food simulants), <MQL-0.32 (alkaline food simulants), and 11.4-31.4 ng/mL (oily food simulants), respectively. OPAs and OPEs in 12 kinds of plastic-packaged foods were detected, with high concentrations in dairy food (∑₃OPAs + ∑₃OPEs: 18.3-28.9 ng/mL) and in oils (∑₃OPAs + ∑₃OPEs: 32.7-60.9 ng/mL). Accordingly, the estimated ingestion of OPAs and OPEs through plastic-packaged food can reach 2.6 and 32.7 ng/kg in children and 1.1 and 6.5 ng/kg in adults, indicating a non-negligible exposure risk of organic phosphorus pollutants.

Synthesis of a magnetic covalent organic framework for extraction and separation of ultraviolet filters in beverage samples

In this study, a novel magnetic covalent organic framework (Fe₃O₄@TAPB-BTT) was successfully synthesized under mild conditions. The prepared magnetic COF exhibited large surface area (876.3 m² g^-1), porous feature as well as sizeable π-conjugated network structure. Due to the above advantages, Fe₃O₄@TAPB-BTT showed good adsorptive performance for ultraviolet (UV) filters with adsorption capacities ranging from 80.8 to 120.1 mg g^-1. Then the adsorbent was applied to magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of UV filters in beverage samples, followed by UHPLC-MS/MS analysis. The established method showed good accuracy, precision, and reproducibility with satisfactory recoveries (76.9-95.6 %), low limits of detection (0.001-0.15 µg/L), and low relative standard deviations (<9.8 %). Besides, the adsorbent can be reutilized at least ten times, demonstrating satisfactory reusability. This work provided an effective method for the analysis and determination of UV filters in drinks.

Migration of Irganox 1010, Irganox 1076, and Titanium dioxide into Doogh and corresponding food simulant from laminated packaging

PURPOSE

Doogh is a famous Iranian drink based on fermented milk. Laminated film is one of the most common packaging for this beverage in Iran. So, chemical substances of the packaging may migrate to the Doogh and endanger human health.

METHOD

In this research, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine the migration of Irganox 1010 and Irganox 1076 from the contact layer and inductively coupled plasma for Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) from the second layer of three-layer laminate films into Doogh and acetic acid 3% (w/v). The influence of different storage temperatures and times was investigated by evaluating the samples stored in various conditions. The morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of the film, before and after contact with food simulant were further studied.

RESULT

The highest amount of Irganox 1010 concentration of the tested samples were 0.8 ± 0.04 mg/l in acetic acid 3% (w/v), and 0.62 ± 0.04 mg/l in Doogh. The highest amount of TiO₂ concentration were 0.25 ± 0.04 mg/l in acetic acid 3% (w/v), and 0.12 ± 0.02 mg/l in Doogh. The migration of Irganox 1076 was determined, but it was not detected. The results indicated that the food simulant had no significant effect on the microstructure and thermal properties of the polymer, but it reduced the mechanical properties.

CONCLUSION

The results indicate the possible migrating of Irganox 1010 and TiO₂ through laminate packaging into Doogh in some storage conditions. Since the migration value was low, the mentioned film was proven safe for Doogh packaging, imposing no hazards on human health.

Occurrence of novel organophosphate esters derived from organophosphite antioxidants in an e-waste dismantling area: Associations between hand wipes and dust

Electronic waste (e-waste) is a well-known source of plastic additives in the environment. However, the e-waste-related occupational exposure to organophosphite antioxidants (OPAs) and the relevant oxidation products-novel organophosphate esters (NOPEs)-via different pathways is still unknown. In this study, six OPAs and three NOPEs were measured in 116 dust and 43 hand-wipe samples from an e-waste dismantling area in Central China. The median concentrations of ΣOPAs and ΣNOPEs were 188 and 13,900 ng·g^-1 in workshop dust and 5,250 ng·m^-2 and 53,600 ng·m^-2 on workers' hands, respectively. The increasing concentrations of dust in the form of triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) (p < 0.01) and tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (AO168 = O) (p < 0.05) were strongly associated with the corresponding concentration on workers' hands. Furthermore, men had significantly lower levels of NOPEs on their hands than did women (p < 0.01). Moreover, the hand wipe levels of AO168 = O (41,600 ng·m^-2) was significantly higher than that of the typical OPE (TPHP, 7370 ng·m^-2), and the hand-to-mouth contact (ΣOPAs, 9.48 ng·kg bw^-1·day^-1; ΣNOPEs, 109 ng·kg bw^-1·day^-1) was a more significant and integrated pathway than dust ingestion (ΣOPAs, 0.10 ng·kg bw^-1·day^-1; ΣNOPEs, 5.01 ng·kg bw^-1·day^-1) of e-waste related occupational exposure to these "new" chemicals.

Identification of Additives in Polypropylene and Their Degradation under Solar Exposure Studied by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Additives are absolutely essential in the development of commercial polymeric materials. Accordingly, an exhaustive control of composition and evolution in these additives over time is necessary to validate their performance and safety during their shelf life and, consequently, their ultimate applications. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, GC-MS, is described in the present work to identify and analyze the content of a wide variety of additives, commonly used in industrial polymeric materials. First, the identification under the present experimental protocol of additives with a relatively high molecular weight (Irganox 1330 and Irganox 1010) has been successfully attained. Second, the evolution under solar exposure over time has been analyzed by GC-MS for 11 additives and derived substances, which have been identified in a commercial polypropylene sample, estimating the corresponding depletion times. In addition, the resultant increase of carbonyl groups in the polymeric macrochains along the photo-oxidation has been also determined by infrared spectroscopy. Therefore, GC-MS is found to be a reliable tool for the analysis of the evolution of commonly used polymer additives under specific degradation conditions, which can be very useful in the formulation of improved future additivations.

Easy and fast extraction methods to determine organochlorine pesticides in sewage sludge, soil, and water samples based at low temperature

Organochlorine pesticides present in sewage sludge can contaminate soil and water when they are used as either fertilizer or agricultural soil conditioner. In this study, the technique solid-liquid extraction with low temperature purification was optimized and validated for determination of ten organochlorine pesticides in sewage sludge and soil samples. Liquid-liquid extraction with low temperature purification was also validated for the same compounds in water. Analyses were performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry operating in the selective ion monitoring mode. After optimization, the methods showed recoveries between 70% and 115% with relative standard deviation lower than 13% for all target analytes in the three matrices. The linearity was demonstrated in the range of 20 to 70 µg L^-1, 0.5 to 60 µg L^-1, and 3 to 13 µg L^-1, for sludge, soil, and acetonitrile, respectively. The limit of quantification ranged between 2 and 40 µg kg^-1, 1 and 6 µg kg^-1, and 0.5 µg L^-1 for sludge, soil, and water, respectively. The methods were used in the study of pesticide lixiviation carried out in a poly vinyl chlorine column filled with soil, which had its surface layer mixed with sludge. The results showed that pesticides are not leached into soil, part of them is adsorbed by the sewage sludge (4-40%), and most pesticides are lost by volatilization.

Identification and quantification of unknown antioxidants in plastic materials by ultrasonic extraction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Mass spectrometry has been applied to the targeted analysis of commonly used additives (such as Irganox 1010, Irganox 1076, Irgafos 168, etc.) in plastic materials, but a fast and straightforward method for the non-targeted identification and quantification of unusual or potentially new antioxidant additives is still unavailable. In this study, a novel and simple method for the identification and quantification of unknown antioxidant additives in plastic food packaging using ultrasonic extraction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry has been developed. A method for the Irganox series analyzed here has not been reported previously. Unknown antioxidant additives have been identified by accurate m/z determination, MS(2) fragments and comparison with synthesized standards. The mass fragmentation patterns and structural assignments of these antioxidants have been studied. Parameters affecting the efficiency of the process, such as extraction solvents, extraction volume, extraction time and chromatographic conditions, have been studied and optimized. Ultrasonic extraction of plastic materials (40 mg) with dichloromethane (0.5 mL) at 25 °C was applied as optimal. Limits of detection of the target additives ranged from 0.5 ng g(-1) to 1.5 ng g(-1), and the detection was linear over the range studied (0.01-1.5 µg mg(-1), r(2)>0.99). The accuracy of the method has been tested by relative recovery experiments with spiked samples, with results ranging from 94.3% to 104.8%, and the precision (relative standard deviation) was within 11.0% (n=3). Finally, the method has been successfully applied to the determination of antioxidants in several real plastic samples.
