Abstract
New copper compounds, [Cu(C14H8O6)(C10H8N2)(H2O)] (1), [Cu(C14H8O6)(C10H8N2)(H2O)]·(C3H7ON)2 (2), [Cu(C14H8O6)(C10H8N2)(H2O)2]·(C3H7ON) (3), [Cu(C14H8O6)(C10H8N4)] (4), and [Cu(C14H8O6)(C10H8N4)]·(H2O) (5), were prepared employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as the primary ligand and 4,4'-bipyridine (1-3) and 4,4'-azopyridine (4-5) as the secondary ligands. Single-crystal studies indicated that compounds 1-4 have two-dimensional layer structures and compound 5 has a three-dimensional structure. Compounds 1-3 were isolated from the same reaction mixture but by varying the time of reaction. The framework structures of compounds 1-3 are similar and may be considered as polymorphic structures. Compounds 4 and 5 can also be considered polymorphic with a change in dimensionality of the structure. Compounds 1-3 can be formed through a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation under a suitable solvent mixture. The Cu center was explored for the Lewis acid-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction of epoxide and CO2 under ambient conditions in a solventless condition and also for the synthesis of propargylamine derivatives by three-component coupling reactions (A3 coupling) in a DCM medium. The Lewis basic functionality of the MOF (-N═N- group) has been explored for the Henry reaction (aldol condensation) in a solventless condition. In all of the catalytic reactions, good yields and recyclability were observed. The magnetic studies indicated that compounds 1 and 4 have antiferromagnetic interactions and compound 5 has ferromagnetic interactions. The present studies illustrated the rich diversity that the copper-containing compounds exhibit in extended framework structures.

Abstract
A new organic ligand, 5-(carboxyformamido)isophthalic acid (5-CFIA), was prepared and employed for the synthesis of two compounds [M3(C10H4O7N1)2(8H2O)]·H2O (M = Cd, Mn). The compounds have three-dimensionally extended structures. Both the compounds were found to be luminescent at room temperature. The luminescence nature was exploited for the detection of Hg2+ ions in an aqueous medium with good selectivity. The interactions between Hg2+ ions and the compounds quench the luminescence intensity and act as a turn-off sensor. Both the compounds exhibited low limits for the detection of Hg2+ ions and in the range mandated by the WHO. The interactions between Hg2+ ions and the compound involve the -NH group, which was probed using Raman and IR spectroscopic techniques. These studies provide important pointers toward the mechanism of this turn-off luminescence behavior. The compounds were explored for base-catalyzed aldol condensation and Lewis acid-promoted β-enaminoester formation reactions. The aldol condensation reaction uses the -NH functionality as a base. The studies indicate that the electron-withdrawing group produces products with higher yields. The β-enaminoester reaction uses the Lewis acid centers, and the studies reveal that the electron-withdrawing groups produce lesser yields of the products. The catalytic nature of the reaction and recyclability of the catalysts were also established. The catalytic reactions employ ethanol (aldol condensation) and no solvent (β-enaminoester), which suggests that the reactions are green and environmentally friendly. The Mn compound was observed to be anti-ferromagnetic.

Abstract
A visible light-promoted generation of nitrilium ions from diazoacetates and nitriles has been developed. The reaction utilized visible light transformation of diazoacetates to the free carbene that could be trapped by nitriles to generate nitrilium ions, followed by nucleophilic attack on the benzotriazoles and carboxylic acids. This protocol provides an efficient and practical approach to N-imidoylbenzotriazoles and diacylglycine esters in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
A Chan–Lam reaction has been used to prepare N-alkenyl-α,β-unsaturated nitrones, which undergo a subsequent thermal rearrangement to the corresponding tri- and tetrasubstituted pyridines. The optimization and scope of these transformations is discussed. Initial mechanistic experiments suggest a reaction pathway involving oxygen transfer followed by cyclization.

Abstract
We designed 39 new 2-phenylindole derivatives as potential anticancer agents bearing the 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl moiety with a sulfur, ketone, or methylene bridging group at position 3 of the indole and with halogen or methoxy substituent(s) at positions 4-7. Compounds 33 and 44 strongly inhibited the growth of the P-glycoprotein-overexpressing multi-drug-resistant cell lines NCI/ADR-RES and Messa/Dx5. At 10 nM, 33 and 44 stimulated the cytotoxic activity of NK cells. At 20-50 nM, 33 and 44 arrested >80% of HeLa cells in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, with stable arrest of mitotic progression. Cell cycle arrest was followed by cell death. Indoles 33, 44, and 81 showed strong inhibition of the SAG-induced Hedgehog signaling activation in NIH3T3 Shh-Light II cells with IC50 values of 19, 72, and 38 nM, respectively. Compounds of this class potently inhibited tubulin polymerization and cancer cell growth, including stimulation of natural killer cell cytotoxic activity and repression of Hedgehog-dependent cancer.

Abstract
A new stereoselective alkylation methodology is presented for formation of chiral, nonracemic quaternary centers via a chiral auxiliary protocol involving α-alkylated malonate imidazolidinones. Based on two X-ray structures of quaternized products, the diastereoselectivity observed may be rationalized via a transition-state involving an s-transC-N conformation of the C-N bond of the auxiliary, with the metal cation (K(+)) chelated into the malonate six-membered hole as a Z-enolate. A deprotection protocol involving ethanethiolate exchange of the imide to the corresponding thioester, followed by a standard Fukuyama reduction and a borohydride reduction, furnishes α,α'-quaternized β-hydroxypropionates in high ee overall.

Abstract
Diverse functionalized spiro[indoline-3,4'-pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridines] were efficiently synthesized by the three-component reaction of 3-arylamino-1-methyl-H-pyrrole-2,5-dione, isatins and malononitrile (ethyl cyanoacetate) in ethanol in the presence of triethylamine. This reaction not only provided a convenient synthetic method for the construction of a versatile spirooxindole system, but also access to reactive β-enaminone and its derivatives for organic and medical chemistry.

Abstract
The whole molecule of the title β-enaminoester, C16H28N2O4, is generated by a crystallographic inversion center, situated at the mid-point of the central C—C bond of the 1,4-diaminobutane segment. There are two intramolecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds that generate S(6) ring motifs. This leads to the Z conformation about the C=C bonds [1.3756 (17) Å]. The molecule is S-shaped with the planar central 1,4-diaminobutane segment [maximum deviation for non H-atoms = 0.0058 (13) Å] being inclined to the ethyl butylenonate fragment [C—C—O—C—C=C—C; maximum deviation = 0.0710 (12) Å] by 15.56 (10)°. In the crystal, molecules are linked via C—H⋯O interactions, leading to the formation of an undulating two-dimensional network lying parallel to the bc plane.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method has been developed for stereoselective one-pot synthesis of ( E)-3-(4-arylpiperazin-1-yl)-1-arylprop-2-en-1-ones by condensation of aryl ketones with arylpiperazines and N, N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal in acetic acid with 54–69% yields. Compared with reported methods, this one-step procedure appears to be a useful approach to prepare ( E)-β-enaminoketones with good stereoselectivity, simple operation and moderate yields.

Abstract
Enaminones, enamines of beta-dicarbonyl compounds, have been known for many years. Their early use has been relegated to serving as synthetic intermediates in organic synthesis and of late, in pharmaceutical development. Recently, the therapeutic potential of these entities has been realized. This review provides the background and current research in this area with emphasis of these agents as potential anticonvulsants, their proposed mechanisms of action, and as potential modulators of multidrug resistance (MDR).

Abstract
Microwave reactions of primary and secondary amines with imidoylbenzotriazoles 6a-w gave diversely substituted amidines 7a-Aa in 76-94% yields. Convenient preparations of a variety of amides 5a-Ab (87-96%) and imidoylbenzotriazoles 6a-w (56-95%) have also been developed using microwave irradiation under mild conditions and short reaction times. These results demonstrate further the advantages of microwave synthesis and introduce a new application of imidoylbenzotriazoles in the preparation of polysubstituted amidines.
