Abstract
An effective and economical acid-promoted three-component reaction for the construction of C-P and C-C bonds for the synthesis of γ-ketophosphine oxides with water as the only byproduct was developed. Detailed mechanistic experiments confirmed that the reaction proceeds by phospha-aldol elimination, in which a benzylic carbocation is generated from the phosphorylation of aldehydes, which then reacts with ketone enolates under acidic conditions.

Abstract
Chiral α,β-unsaturated γ-lactams bearing simple γ- substituents are found in biologically active molecules and natural products, however, their synthesis still remains difficult. Herein, we report an efficient kinetic resolution (KR) of γ-substituted α,β-unsaturated γ-lactams via a Cu-catalyzed asymmetric boron conjugate addition, which also leads to the efficient synthesis of chiral β-hydroxy-γ-lactams with β,γ-stereogenic carbon centers. The KR proceeded smoothly with a wide range of γ-alkyl or aryl substituted substrates including those bearing aromatic heterocycles and different N-protected substrates in up to 347 of s value. Their highly versatile transformations, synthetic utility in biologically active molecules, and inhibitory activities against cisplatin-sensitive ovarian cancer cell A2780 have also been demonstrated. Differing from the well-known mechanism involving Cu-B species in Cu-catalyzed boron conjugate additions, our mechanistic studies using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments indicate that a Lewis acid CuI -catalyzed mechanism is the likely pathway in the catalytic reaction.

Abstract
A nickel(II)-catalyzed asymmetric direct vinylogous Michael addition of γ-alkyl monosubstituted α,β-unsaturated butyrolactams to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds has been disclosed, affording γ,γ-dialkyl substituted butyrolactams in good yields and satisfactory enantioselectivities. A tandem catalytic asymmetric vinylogous Michael addition/intramolecular Michael addition has also been developed based on this reaction, which enabled the construction of enantioenriched octahydroindoles with three consecutive stereogenic carbon centers.

Abstract
As a non-covalent interaction of a chiral scaffold in catalysis, pnicogen bonding of epi-cinchonidine (epi-CD), a cinchona alkaloid, was simulated to consider whether the interaction can have the potential controlling enantiotopic face like hydrogen bonding. Among five reactive functional groups in epi-CD, two stable complexes of the hydroxyl group (X-epi-CD1) at C17 and of the quinoline ring (X-epi-CD2) at N16 with pnictide family analytes [X = substituted phosphine (PX), i.e., F, Br, Cl, CF3, CN, HO, NO2, and CH3, and pnictide family analytes, i.e., PBr3, BiI3, SbI3, and AsI3] were predicted with intermolecular interaction energies, charge transfer (QMulliken and QNBO), and band gap energies of HOMO-LUMO (Eg) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of density functional theory. It was found that the dominant site of pnicogen bonding in epi-CD is the quinoline ring (N16 atom) rather than the hydroxyl group (O36 atom). In addition, the UV-Vis spectra of the complex were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level and compared with experimental measurements. Through these calculations, two intermolecular interactions (H-bond vs. pnicogen bond) of epi-CD were compared.

Abstract
The principle of vinylogy states that the electronic effects of a functional group in a molecule are possibly transmitted to a distal position through interposed conjugated multiple bonds. As an emblematic case, the nucleophilic character of a π-extended enolate-type chain system may be relayed from the legitimate α-site to the vinylogous γ, ε, ..., ω remote carbon sites along the chain, provided that suitable HOMO-raising strategies are adopted to transform the unsaturated pronucleophilic precursors into the reactive polyenolate species. On the other hand, when "unnatural" carbonyl ipso-sites are activated as nucleophiles (umpolung), vinylogation extends the nucleophilic character to "unnatural" β, δ, ... remote sites. Merging the principle of vinylogy with activation modalities and concepts such as iminium ion/enamine organocatalysis, NHC-organocatalysis, cooperative organo/metal catalysis, bifunctional organocatalysis, dicyanoalkylidene activation, and organocascade reactions represents an impressive step forward for all vinylogous transformations. This review article celebrates this evolutionary progress, by collecting, comparing, and critically describing the achievements made over the nine year period 2010-2018, in the generation of vinylogous enolate-type donor substrates and their use in chemical synthesis.

Abstract
The β-selective asymmetric addition of γ-butyrolactam with cyclic imino esters catalyzed by a bifunctional chiral tertiary amine has been developed, which provides an efficient access to optically active β-position functionalized pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives in both high yield and enantioselectivity (up to 78% yield and 95 : 5 er). This is the first catalytic method to access chiral β-functionalized pyrrolidin-2-one via a direct organocatalytic approach.

Abstract
Versatile synthetic strategies that access diverse chemical substrates in a highly chemo- and stereo-selective manner are crucial but demanding. Construction of chiral molecules with multiple (hetero)-quaternary carbon stereocenters in a single fashion is a particularly significant challenge, with important applications in the synthesis of a range of bioactive compounds containing the 1,4-sulfur bridged piperidinone structural motif. The asymmetric synthesis of these entities is complicated due to the need to build at least two hetero-quaternary stereocenters concurrently. In order to achieve this, we have developed a new family of dipeptide-based multifunctional Brønsted base organocatalysts that are highly capable of the first asymmetric [4 + 2] annulation reaction of 5H-thiazol-4-ones with electron-deficient alkenes. This protocol could be applied to a series of alkenes such as nitroalkenes, 4-oxo-4-arylbutenones, 4-oxo-4-arylbutenoates and methyleneindolinones, providing an efficient approach to valuable chiral 1,4-sulfur bridged piperidinones and their derivatives with multiple hetereo-quaternary stereogenic centers in high yields and enantioselectivities. Density functional theory studies involving 5H-thiazol-4-one and nitroolefin catalysis propose stereochemical insights into the origin of enantio- and chemo-selectivity.

Abstract
A novel cinchona-alkaloid-derived organocatalyst has been developed to catalyze the asymmetric regioselective [3+2] cycloaddition of 3-isothiocyanato oxindoles with dibenzylidene ketones. A series of spirooxindole enols could be obtained in high yields with good-to-excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

Abstract
A direct vinylogous Michael addition using linear vinylogous Michael donors has been developed. Notably, even γ-substituted Michael donors cleanly afforded γ-alkylated products in high yield and ee by this method. Moreover, control experiments revealed that, for these and related linear vinylogous Michael donors, the size of the Michael acceptor strongly influences whether α- or γ-alkylation occurs, not simply blocking effects of cocatalysts as suggested previously.

Abstract
New pentaerythritol tetrabromide-based chiral quaternary ammonium salts acting as organocatalysts (7a and 7b) have been prepared and used as organocatalysts for enantioselective Michael addition reactions between various nitroolefins and Michael donors (malonates) under mild reaction conditions, such as lower concentration of base and catalyst and room temperature, with very good chemical yields (up to 97%) and ee's (up to 99%).
