Abstract
The development of large π-conjugated polycyclic heteroaromatic materials is of immense interest, both in the academic as well as the industrial community. Herein, we present the efficient one-pot synthesis of novel pyreno[2,1-b]furan molecules from a newly designed intermediate, which display intense green emission (505-516 nm) in solution and a large red shift emission (625-640 nm) in the solid state, because of strong π-π stacking. More interestingly, the compounds exhibit novel two-photon absorption (TPA) properties, and the TPA cross-section (δ) value was increased to 533 GM by regulating the electronic effects of the substituents of the pyreno[2,1-b]furan molecules. This study not only offers a facile strategy for constructing new pyrene-fused luminescence materials with two-photon absorption properties but also provides a new chemical intermediate that opens up a new pathway to advanced materials.

Abstract
Understanding water-soluble and environmentally friendly two-photon absorption (TPA) molecules benefits the design of superior organic complexes for biomedical, illumination, and display applications. In this work, we designed two triphenylamine-based all-organic compounds and explored the mechanism of enhanced TP fluorescence in water solutions for potential applications. Experimentally, we showed that adding protein into our TPA molecule solution can drastically boost the TP fluorescence. Numerical simulations reveal that the TPA molecules prefer to dock inside the protein complex. We hypothesize that the interaction between our triphenylamine-based all-organic compounds and water molecules lead to non-radiative decay processes, which prevent strong TP fluorescence in the water solution. Therefore, the protection by, for example, protein molecules from such interactions can be a universal strategy for superior functioning of organic TPA molecules. Further experiments and numerical simulations support our hypothesis. The present study may facilitate the design of superior water-soluble and environmentally friendly superior organic complexes.

Abstract
Sonogashira coupling represents an indispensable tool for the preparation of organic materials that contain C(sp)-C(sp2) bonds. Improving the efficiency and generality of this methodology has long been an important research subject in materials science. Here, we show that a high-temperature ball-milling technique enables the highly efficient palladium-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling of solid aryl halides that bear large polyaromatic structures including sparingly soluble substrates and unactivated aryl chlorides. In fact, this new protocol provides various materials-oriented polyaromatic alkynes in excellent yield within short reaction times in the absence of bulk reaction solvents. Notably, we synthesized a new luminescent material via the mechanochemical Sonogashira coupling of poorly soluble Vat Red 1 in a much higher yield compared to those obtained using solution-based conditions. The utility of this method was further demonstrated by the rapid synthesis of a fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor via two sequential mechanochemical Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. The present study illustrates the great potential of Sonogashira coupling using ball milling for the preparation of materials-oriented alkynes and for the discovery of novel functional materials.

Abstract
Push-pull organic structures characterized by an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process and π-electron delocalization are potentially interesting luminescent materials. A series of three-dimensional o-carborane-containing perylene bisimide derivatives (PBIs) were synthesized, and their optical properties were systematically investigated to illustrate the stereo effect, especially on the two-photon absorption (2PA) and optical power limiting (OPL) properties. Open-aperture Z-scan curves showed that all four PBIs displayed strong and broad two-photon absorptivities based on the resonance-enhanced phenomenon. The maximum degenerate two-photon absorption cross section (δ2PA) increased with the number of PBI substituents. The derivative CB-PBI possessed a δ2PA value of ∼2400 GM at 650 nm, a significant enhancement in comparison with that of the parent PBI (∼719 GM), ascribed to the present stereo effect. When the aromatic-donating units changed from naphthyl and pyrenyl to PBI, the generated multidimensional intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from the aromatic units to the o-carborane cage contributed to the 2PA processes. All of the fluorophores exhibited excellent optical power limiting (OPL) performances as well as a minimum limiting threshold of ∼4.98 mJ/cm2 for CB-PBI. These significant results not only allow us to get deep insight into the nature of the fundamental stereo effect and nonlinear optical (NLO) response involved but also guide us toward the design of new multifunctional luminescent materials.

Abstract
The relationship between the photophysical properties and molecular orientation of 1,3,6,8-tetraalkylpyrenes in the solid state is described herein. The introduction of alkyl groups with different chain structures (in terms of length and branching) did not affect the photophysical properties in solution, but significantly shifted the emission wavelengths and fluorescence quantum yields in the solid state for some samples. Pyrenes bearing ethyl, isobutyl, or neopentyl groups at the 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-positions showed similar emission profiles in both the solution and solid states. In contrast, pyrenes bearing other alkyl groups exhibited an excimer emission in the solid state, similar to that of the parent pyrene. On studying the photophysical properties in the solid state with respect to the obtained crystal structures, the observed solid-state photophysical properties were found to depend on the relative position of the pyrene chromophores. The solid-state photophysical properties can be controlled by the alkyl groups, which provide changing crystal packing. Among the pyrenes tested, 1,3,6,8-tetraethylpyrene showed the highest fluorescence quantum yield of 0.88 in the solid state.

Abstract
We report a structure of ferrocene-pyrene conjugate (1) comprising electro and photo-active dual-signaling units. In particular, 1 upon interaction with Cu(II), displays selectively one-photon fluorescence quenching, but it shows two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section 1230 GM (at 780 nm). Further, 1 displayed two irreversible oxidative waves at 0.39 V and 0.80 V (vs Ag/AgCl), in the electrochemical analysis which upon addition of Cu2+, led to the negative potential shift in both the oxidative waves to appear at 0.25 V and 0.68 V. The triple mode changes in presence of Cu(II) suggesting the possible application of 1 for the detection of Cu(II) in aqueous media. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Pyrene-based π-conjugated materials are considered to be an ideal organic electro-luminescence material for application in semiconductor devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs), and so forth. However, the great drawback of employing pyrene as an organic luminescence material is the formation of excimer emission, which quenches the efficiency at high concentration or in the solid-state. Thus, in order to obtain highly efficient optical devices, scientists have devoted much effort to tuning the structure of pyrene derivatives in order to realize exploitable properties by employing two strategies, 1) introducing a variety of moieties at the pyrene core, and 2) exploring effective and convenient synthetic strategies to functionalize the pyrene core. Over the past decades, our group has mainly focused on synthetic methodologies for functionalization of the pyrene core; we have found that formylation/acetylation or bromination of pyrene can selectly lead to functionalization at K-region by Lewis acid catalysis. Herein, this Minireview highlights the direct synthetic approaches (such as formylation, bromination, oxidation, and de-tert-butylation reactions, etc.) to functionalize the pyrene in order to advance research on luminescent materials for organic electronic applications. Further, this article demonstrates that the future direction of pyrene chemistry is asymmetric functionalization of pyrene for organic semiconductor applications and highlights some of the classical asymmetric pyrenes, as well as the latest breakthroughs. In addition, the photophysical properties of pyrene-based molecules are briefly reviewed. To give a current overview of the development of pyrene chemistry, the review selectively covers some of the latest reports and concepts from the period covering late 2011 to the present day.

Abstract
In the title compound, C23H16O2S, the thio-phene group is rotationally disordered into two fractions almost parallel to each other, with occupation factors of 0.523 (7) and 0.477 (7), and subtending dihedral angles of 10.5 (5) and 9.3 (5)°, respectively, to the thio-phene group. The mol-ecules are held together by weak C-H⋯O and C-H⋯π hydrogen bonds, producing a laminar arrangement, which are further connected in a perpendicular fashion by S⋯π contacts [S⋯centroid = 3.539 (8) and 3.497 (8) Å]. In spite of the presence of the entended pyrene group, the structure does not present any parallel π-π stacking inter-actions. The structure was refined as an inversion twin.

Abstract
The systematic synthesis of five 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-tetrasubstituted asymmetric pyrenes with electron donor and acceptor moieties is presented, together with an examination of their photophysical properties. Pyrene derivative PA1, containing one formyl and three piperidyl groups, showed bright solvatochromic fluorescence from green (λem = 557 nm, ΦFL = 0.94 in hexane) to red (λem = 648 nm, ΦFL = 0.50 in methanol), suggesting potential applications for PA1 as an environmentally responsive probe. Although the synthesis of simple 1- and 3-disubstituted pyrene derivatives is considered difficult, PA13, with two formyl groups at the 1- and 3-positions and two piperidyl groups at the 6- and 8-positions, could be synthesized successfully. PA13 exhibited less pronounced solvatochromism, but displayed a narrow fluorescent band with high ΦFL in all solvents (ΦFL > 0.75). Moreover, its absorption band displayed an exceptional bathochromic shift compared to the other derivatives (e.g., λabs = 480 and 522 nm in ethanol for PA1 and PA13, respectively), suggesting that such modifications of pyrene may be quite important for the modulation of its energy gap. Additionally, all compounds exhibited exceptionally high photostability, which highlights the advantage of these new dyes and provides new insights on the design of photostable fluorophores.

Abstract
A new azobenzene-based photoswitch, 2, has been designed to enable optical control of ionotropic glutamate receptors in neurons via sensitized two-photon excitation with NIR light. In order to develop an efficient and versatile synthetic route for this molecule, a modular strategy is described which relies on the use of a new linear fully protected glutamate derivative stable in basic media. The resulting compound undergoes one-photon trans-cis photoisomerization via two different mechanisms: direct excitation of its azoaromatic unit and irradiation of the pyrene sensitizer, a well-known two-photon sensitive chromophore. Moreover, 2 presents large thermal stability of its cis isomer, in contrast to other two-photon responsive switches relying on the intrinsic nonlinear optical properties of push-pull substituted azobenzenes. As a result, the molecular system developed herein is a very promising candidate for evoking large photoinduced biological responses during the multiphoton operation of neuronal glutamate receptors with NIR light, which require accumulation of the protein-bound cis state of the switch upon repeated illumination.

Abstract
The title compound, C17H12O, crystallized with three independent mol-ecules (A, B and C) in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal, the three independent mol-ecules are linked by π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distances = 3.551 (3)-3.977 (2) Å], which lead to the formation of trimers. Between the trimers there are a number of C-H⋯π inter-actions generating a laminar arrangement parallel to (010). The meth-oxy-methyl group in mol-ecule A is disordered over two sets of sites, with an occupancy ratio of 0.56 (9):0.44 (9).

Abstract
The development of two-photon (TP) active fluorophores remains an important issue. Dyes that can be excited and fluoresce efficiently in the 'tissue optical window' (650-1100 nm) are especially in demand to maximize the underlying performance of two-photon fluorescence microscopy (TPFM) as an advanced optical technique. Ideally, such dyes would be compatible with the 1050 nm femtosecond fibre laser, which has recently been developed as an inexpensive excitation source to make the TPFM technique universal. In this work, we designed and synthesized a novel pyrene-based acceptor-π-acceptor (A-π-A) dye, PY, which exhibited outstanding properties such as bright fluorescence (λem = 650 nm and ΦFL = 0.80) and a large two-photon absorption cross-section (1100 GM (1 GM = 10-50 cm4 per photon per molecule) at 950 nm and 380 GM at 1050 nm) in the tissue optical window. In living mitochondria, PY provided more sensitive microscopic images than current dyes and showed great potential to be a building block of TP active fluorescent probes for the 1050 nm fibre laser. We believe that the exceptional properties of PY will be extended to other fluorescent probes through further chemical modification.

Abstract
We have systematically synthesized 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-alkyl-substituted pyrene derivatives using the latest synthesis methods and investigated the effects of alkyl substitution on the photophysical properties of the pyrene chromophore. Like the trimethylsilyl group, which is known to enhance the fluorescence properties of some chromophores through σ*-π* conjugation, alkyl groups (primary, secondary, and tertiary) enhanced the fluorescence quantum yield of the pyrene chromophore through σ-π conjugation in most cases. While these enhancements in the fluorescence quantum yield were beyond expectations, the results were supported by absolute measurements. These results also indicate that ubiquitous alkyl groups can be used to tune the photophysical properties of the pyrene chromophore, as well as to improve the solubility or prevent aggregation. In other words, they can be used to develop new photofunctional materials.

Abstract
Recently new molecular systems based on the pyrene moiety were developed for photovoltaic applications. Here we present the results of a quantum chemical study focused on the effects induced by some different substituents on the electronic properties of pyrene, to obtain general hints for the molecular design of new pyrene-based systems. In particular, a series of electron-donating (hydroxy, amino, acetylamino) and electron-withdrawing (cyano, carbamoyl, formyl, ethynyl, ethenyl) groups were considered. Furthermore, in addition to the single pyrene molecule, two pyrene units linked by ethenylene, ethynylene, 2,5-thienylene, and ethynylene-p-phenylene containing chains of different lengths were taken into account. For all of the model structures presented, the ground state geometries have been optimized using the density functional approach, while the vertical transition energies were calculated using the time-dependent density functional theory. We will show that the tuning of the lowest electronic excitation energy (i.e., the HOMO-LUMO energy gap) as well as the localization of the spatial distributions of the frontier molecular orbitals (i.e., the nature of the electron-hole pair, generated by photon absorption) can be obtained through the analysis of the pyrene frontier molecular orbitals. This approach allows to evaluate the most suitable position of the substituents on the pyrene moiety giving rise to enhanced electronic effects also in function of their electronic nature. In this way, pyrene-structures with tailored electronic properties could be modeled. Our screening shows that promising candidates for photovoltaic applications could be molecular structures formed by two pyrene units joined/linked by a short conjugated bridge containing double or triple bonds (henceforth pyrene-linked dimers). As far as the single pyrene units are considered, the most significant reduction of the transition energy of the lowest optical electronic excitation is obtained with disubstituted pyrenes with push-pull character.
