Abstract
A genetic algorithm was used to control the photoluminesce-nce (PL) from GaAs(100). A spatial light modulator (SLM) used feedback from the emission to optimize the spectral phase profile of an ultrashort laser pulse. Most of the experiments were performed using a sine phase function to optimize the integrated PL spectrum over a specified wavelength range, with the amplitude and period of the phase function treated as genetic parameters. An order of magnitude increase in signal was achieved after only one generation, and an optimized waveform, consisting of three equally spaced pulses approximately 0.8 ps apart, was obtained after 15 generations. The effects of fluence, polarization, relative phase of the subpulses, and spectral range of the optimized PL were investigated. In addition, preliminary experiments were performed using the phases of individual pixels of the SLM as genetic variables. The PL spectrum is identified with recombination of electron-hole pairs in the L-valley of the Brillouin zone. Control is achieved by coherent manipulation of plasma electrons. It is proposed that hot electrons excite lattice phonons, which in turn scatter carriers into the L-valley.

Abstract
The photochemically induced electrocyclic ring-opening reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadiene to 1,3,5-hexatriene serves as a prototype for many important reactions in chemistry and in biological systems. Based on experimental and computational studies, a detailed picture of the reaction has now emerged: Excitation to the Franck-Condon region places the molecule on a steeply repulsive part of the 1B potential energy surface, which propels the molecule in exactly the conrotatory direction that conforms to the Woodward-Hoffmann rules of orbital symmetry. Bypassing a cusp in a symmetry-breaking direction, the wave packet enters the 2A state within 55 fs. It continues to move directly toward the 2A/1A conical intersection, where it crosses in approximately 80 fs to the ground state. This article summarizes the published experimental and theoretical work to describe the current understanding of the reaction while pointing to important questions that remain to be addressed.

Abstract
We report an investigation to elucidate the mechanisms of control in phase-sensitive experiments in two molecular systems. A first inspection of optimization procedures yields the same experimental result: increase in the emission efficiency upon excitation by a phase modulated pulse in a two-photon transition. More detailed studies, which include power dependence, spectral response, one and two color pump-probe and pump-pump experiments show that while for one chromophore phase modulation leads to spectral matching between the two-photon cross section and the second order power spectrum for the other it provides a tool to manipulate the wavepacket dynamics in the excited state.

Abstract
The spatio-temporal coupling of shaped laser pulses is measured using scanning SEA TADPOLE as a function of propagation distance through the focal region of a plano-convex lens. A double pulse sequence is measured to have a gradually changing spectral phase across the beam front as a function of propagation distance. When a sinusoidal spectral phase is applied to the shaper a saw-tooth spectral amplitude is measured across the beam front before and after the focal plane of the lens. The measured spatio-spectral phase and amplitude for these two common pulse shapes are consistent with the predictions of a theoretical model.

Abstract
Building on the work of Iftimie et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 113, 4852 (2000)] and Gelb [J. Chem. Phys. 118, 7747 (2003)], Boltzmann sampling of an approximate potential (the "reference" system) is used to build a Markov chain in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. At the end points of the chain, the energy is evaluated at a more accurate level (the "full" system) and a composite move encompassing all of the intervening steps is accepted on the basis of a modified Metropolis criterion. For reference system chains of sufficient length, consecutive full energies are statistically decorrelated and thus far fewer are required to build ensemble averages with a given variance. Without modifying the original algorithm, however, the maximum reference chain length is too short to decorrelate full configurations without dramatically lowering the acceptance probability of the composite move. This difficulty stems from the fact that the reference and full potentials sample different statistical distributions. By manipulating the thermodynamic variables characterizing the reference system (pressure and temperature, in this case), we maximize the average acceptance probability of composite moves, lengthening significantly the random walk between consecutive full energy evaluations. In this manner, the number of full energy evaluations needed to precisely characterize equilibrium properties is dramatically reduced. The method is applied to a model fluid, but implications for sampling high-dimensional systems with ab initio or density functional theory potentials are discussed.
