Absorption Spectra of Blue-Light-Emitting Oligoquinolines from Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Methodologies in Spectral Tuning of DSSC Chromophores through Rational Design and Chemical-Structure Engineering

The investigation of new photosensitizers for Grätzel-type organic dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) remains a topic of interest for researchers of alternative solar cell materials. Over the past 20 years, considerable and increasing research efforts have been devoted to the design and synthesis of new materials, based on "donor, π-conjugated bridge, acceptor" (D-π-A) organic dye photosensitizers. In this paper, the computational chemistry methods are outlined and the design of organic sensitizers (compounds, dyes) is discussed. With reference to recent literature reports, rational molecular design is demonstrated as an effective process to study structure-property relationships. Examples from established organic dye sensitizer structures, such as TA-St-CA, Carbz-PAHTDDT (S9), and metalloporphyrin (PZn-EDOT), are used as reference structures for an examination of this concept applied to generate systematically modified structural derivatives and hence new photosensitizers (i.e., dyes). Using computer-aided rational design (CARD), the in silico design of new chromophores targeted an improvement in spectral properties via the tuning of electronic structures by substitution of molecular fragments, as evaluated by the calculation of absorption profiles. This mini review provides important rational design strategies for engineering new organic light-absorbing compounds towards improved spectral absorption and related optoelectronic properties of chromophores for photovoltaic applications, including the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC).

Optical Absorptions of New Blue-Light Emitting Oligoquinolines Bearing Pyrenyl and Triphenyl Endgroups Investigated with Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

The optical absorption spectra of a family of four n-type conjugated oligomers, oligoquinolines, which can be commercially used to develop high-performance light-emitting diodes for their many desirable properties, have been recently calculated from time-depedent density functional theory (TDDFT) within the adiabatic approximation for the dynamical exchange-correlation potential. In this work, we investigate the optical absorption of two new family members of the blue-light emitting oligoquinolines bearing pyrenyl and triphenyl endgroups in gas phase and chloroform (CHCl3) solution employing the adiabatic TDDFT. The ionization potentials and electron affinities of these two oligoquinoline molecules are also calculated with the ground-state DFT, from which the adiabatic dynamical exchange-correlation potential is constructed. We show that the calculated optical absorptions are in good agreement with experiments. The ionization potentials obtained with the DFT methods agree well with the experimental estimates, while the electron affinities are significantly underestimated in comparison with experiments. A natural transition orbital analysis for selected excited states with the largest oscillator strengths shows that the electronic charge is slightly redistributed in the process of electronic excitations.

On the origin of the solid-state thermochromism and thermal fatigue of polycyclic overcrowded enes

Aimed at unraveling the relative contribution of the folding, twisting and bending in the mechanism of the solid-state thermochromism of overcrowded polycyclic aromatic enes (PAEs), the structures of two typical heteromeric and homomeric representatives, 2-(thioxanthen-9-ylidene)indane-1,3-dione (1) and 9,9'-bi-9(10H)-anthracenylidene-10,10'-dione (bianthrone, 2), were studied by temperature-resolved single crystal X-ray diffraction (120-530 K) and solid-state UV-visible spectroscopy. Aside from negligibly small unfolding of the tricyclic moiety of 1, this first direct diffraction study of the high-temperature structures of solid PAEs did not unravel any significant and detectable changes in the time- and space-averaged intramolecular structures, thus, showing that the PAE-type thermochromism is not due to phase transitions or to major and permanent molecular distortions of a large portion of the material that would be caused by folding, twisting and/or bending. Instead, the experimental observations and theoretical modeling indicated that the color change is probably due to a dynamic process, where the absorption spectrum changes as a result of enhanced thermal oscillations of the two halves of the molecules around the central bridge. In addition to the reversible coloration, we also observed irreversible processes of thermal fatigue that afford stable chemical products that absorb in the visible region. We showed that the stable products are conductive and they act electrocatalytically toward oxidation of several biomarkers.

Prediction of Excitation Energies for Conjugated Oligomers and Polymers from Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

With technological advances, light-emitting conjugated oligomers and polymers have become competitive candidates in the commercial market of light-emitting diodes for display and other technologies, due to the ultralow cost, light weight, and flexibility. Prediction of excitation energies of these systems plays a crucial role in the understanding of their optical properties and device design. In this review article, we discuss the calculation of excitation energies with time-dependent density functional theory, which is one of the most successful methods in the investigation of the dynamical response of molecular systems to external perturbation, owing to its high computational efficiency.
