Phase separation of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals on a chemically patterned substrate

Drop Behavior on Heterogeneous Ratchet-Structured Substrates Harmonically Vibrated in Lateral Direction

We analyze numerically a new ratchet system: a liquid drop is sitting on a heterogeneous ratchet-structured solid plate. The coated plate is subject to a lateral harmonic oscillation. The systematic investigation performed in the frame of a phase field model shows the possibility of realizing a long-distance net-driven motion for isolated domains of the forcing parameters. The studied problem might be of considerable interest for controlled motion in micro- and nanofluidics.

Surfactant-induced ordering and wetting transitions of droplets of thermotropic liquid crystals "caged" inside partially filled polymeric capsules

We report a study of the wetting and ordering of thermotropic liquid crystal (LC) droplets that are trapped (or "caged") within micrometer-sized cationic polymeric microcapsules dispersed in aqueous solutions of surfactants. When they were initially dispersed in water, we observed caged, nearly spherical droplets of E7, a nematic LC mixture, to occupy ∼40% of the interior volume of the polymeric capsules [diameter of 6.7 ± 0.3 μm, formed via covalent layer-by-layer assembly of branched polyethylenimine and poly(2-vinyl-4,4-dimethylazlactone)] and to contact the interior surface of the capsule wall at an angle of ∼157 ± 11°. The internal ordering of LC within the droplets corresponded to the so-called bipolar configuration (distorted by contact with the capsule walls). While the effects of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on the internal ordering of "free" LC droplets are similar, we observed the two surfactants to trigger strikingly different wetting and configurational transitions when LC droplets were caged within polymeric capsules. Specifically, upon addition of SDS to the aqueous phase, we observed the contact angles (θ) of caged LC on the interior surface of the capsule to decrease, resulting in a progression of complex droplet shapes, including lenses (θ ≈ 130 ± 10°), hemispheres (θ ≈ 89 ± 5°), and concave hemispheres (θ < 85°). The wetting transitions induced by SDS also resulted in changes in the internal ordering of the LC to yield states topologically equivalent to axial and radial configurations. Although topologically equivalent to free droplets, the contributions that surface anchoring, LC elasticity, and topological defects make to the free energy of caged LC droplets differ from those of free droplets. Overall, these results and others reported herein lead us to conclude that caged LC droplets offer a platform for new designs of LC-droplet-based responsive soft matter that cannot be realized in dispersions of free droplets.

Chitosan as matrix for bio-polymer dispersed liquid crystal systems

The obtaining of bio-polymer dispersed liquid crystal (bio-PDLC) systems based on a chitosan polymer matrix is reported here for the first time. The new PDLC composites have been obtained by encapsulation of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) as low molecular weight liquid crystal into chitosan, and they have been characterized by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, electron and transmission scanning microscopy, Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy. Submicrometric liquid crystalline droplets with uniform size distribution and density have been obtained for low liquid crystal content into the PDLCs. The droplets have a radial configuration being anchored into chitosan matrix by an interface ordering coupling phenomenon.

Massively ordered microstructures composed of magnetic nanoparticles

Magnetic γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticle toluene solution was placed in a restricted, axially symmetric geometry composed of a spherical lens on a Si substrate (i.e., sphere-on-Si geometry), forming a capillary-held solution. The solvent evaporation led to the self-assembly of γ- Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles into hundreds of spatially well-ordered, gradient concentric 'coffee rings'. The rings were two nanoparticle layers high with a monolayer of nanoparticle thin film formed in between. The ring width ranged from submicron to a few microns. The center-to-center distance between adjacent rings was on the order of a few microns. The size and packing of γ- Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles, both within individual microscopic rings and in between, were dependent upon the preparation of the γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticle toluene solution.

Self-assembling semicrystalline polymer into highly ordered, microscopic concentric rings by evaporation

A drop of semicrystalline polymer, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), solution was placed in a restricted geometry consisting of a sphere on a flat substrate (i.e., sphere-on-flat geometry). Upon solvent evaporation from the sphere-on-flat geometry, microscopic concentric rings of PEO with appropriate high molecular weight were produced via controlled, repetitive pinning ("stick") and depinning ("slip") cycles of the contact line. The evaporation-induced concentric rings of PEO exhibited a fibrillar-like surface morphology. Subsequent isothermal crystallization of rings at 40 and 58 degrees C led to the formation of multilayer of flat-on lamellae (i.e., spiral morphology). In between adjacent spirals, depletion zones were developed during crystallization, as revealed by AFM measurements. The present highly ordered, concentric PEO rings may serve as a platform to study cell adhesion and motility, neuron guidance, cell mechanotransduction, and other biological processes.

Alignment and anchoring transition of liquid crystals on the surface of self-assembled block copolymer films with periodic defects

Patterned alignment of the nematic and uniform homeotropic alignment of the smectic LC occur on the periodic bend-splay Neél wall defect pattern of a rod-coil copolymer substrate surface.
