Effect of the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition method on the surface morphology and wetting behavior of hydrophobically modified PEO and PAA LbL films

A Wood-Derived Periosteum for Spatiotemporal Drug Release: Boosting Bone Repair through Anisotropic Structure and Multiple Functions

Existing artificial periostea face many challenges, including difficult-to-replicate anisotropy in mechanics and structure, poor tissue adhesion, and neglected synergistic angiogenesis and osteogenesis. Here, inspired by natural wood (NW), a wood-derived elastic artificial periosteum is developed to mimic the structure and functions of natural periosteum, which combines an elastic wood (EW) skeleton, a polydopamine (PDA) binder layer, and layer-by-layer (LBL) biofunctional layers. Specifically, EW derived from NW is utilized as the anisotropic skeleton of artificial periosteum to guide cell directional behaviors, moreover, it also shows a similar elastic modulus and flexibility to natural periosteum. To further enhance its synergistic angiogenesis and osteogenesis, surface LBL biofunctional layers are designed to serve as spatiotemporal release platforms to achieve sequential and long-term release of pamidronate disodium (PDS) and deferoxamine (DFO), which are pre-encapsulated in chitosan (CS) and hyaluronic acid (HA) solutions, respectively. Furthermore, the combined effect of PDA coating and LBL biofunctional layers enables the periosteum to tightly adhere to damaged bone tissue. More importantly, this novel artificial periosteum can boost angiogenesis and bone formation in vitro and in vivo. This study opens up a new path for biomimetic design of artificial periosteum, and provides a feasible clinical strategy for bone repair.

Layer-by-Layer Deposition of Regenerated Silk Fibroin─An Approach to the Surface Coating of Biomedical Implant Materials

Biomaterials and coating techniques unlock major benefits for advanced medical therapies. Here, we explored layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of silk fibroin (SF) by dip coating to deploy homogeneous films on different materials (titanium, magnesium, and polymers) frequently used for orthopedic and other bone-related implants. Titanium and magnesium specimens underwent preceding plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) to increase hydrophilicity. This was determined as surface properties were visualized by scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Finally, biological in vitro evaluations of hemocompatibility, THP-1 cell culture, and TNF-α assays were conducted. A more hydrophilic surface could be achieved using the PEO surface, and the contact angle for magnesium and titanium showed a reduction from 73 to 18° and from 58 to 17°, respectively. Coating with SF proved successful on all three surfaces, and coating thicknesses of up to 5.14 μm (±SD 0.22 μm) were achieved. Using FTIR analysis, it was shown that the insolubility of the material was achieved by post-treatment with water vapor annealing, although the random coil peak (1640-1649 cm-1) and the α-helix peak (at 1650 cm-1) were still evident. SF did not change hemocompatibility, regardless of the substrate, whereas the PEO-coated materials showed improved hemocompatibility. THP-1 cell culture showed that cells adhered excellently to all of the tested material surfaces. Interestingly, SF coatings induced a significantly higher amount of TNF-α for all materials, indicating an inflammatory response, which plays an important role in a variety of physiological processes, including osteogenesis. LbL coatings of SF are shown to be promising candidates to modulate the body's immune response to implants manufactured from titanium, magnesium, and polymers. They may therefore facilitate future applications for bioactive implant coatings. However, further in vivo studies are needed to confirm the proposed effects on osteogenesis in a physiological environment.

Unexpected enhancement of pH-stability in Au3+/Ag+ loaded H-bonded layer-by-layer thin films

In this work, a polymeric film was synthesized through a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique using polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethylene oxide (PEO), resulting in the formation of a hydrogen-bonded LBL film. The formation of these films was evaluated by PMIRRAS and QCM-D. The synergy of these techniques allowed the understanding of the mechanism of formation of the film by showing the H-bonding formation and film growth. Au and Ag metal ions were successfully incorporated into the films, as corroborated by the combination of the information obtained by XRR and PMIRRAS. The films were exposed to increasing pH, showing a pronounced improvement in stability in films loaded with Au ions, extending the stability from pH 4 to 10. This behavior allows the use of this system in a wider range of applications, including the possibility of working in biological conditions. On the other hand, films loaded with Ag disintegrated at pH above 4. At acidic pH (below 3), these films released the Ag ions, which may be useful for the preparation of antibacterial stimuli-responsive nanomaterials. In both cases, the films were adequate to produce metal nanoparticles by metal loading and in situ reduction.

Layer-by-Layer Nanoassemblies for Vaccination Purposes

In recent years, the availability of effective vaccines has become a public health challenge due to the proliferation of different pandemic outbreaks which are a risk for the world population health. Therefore, the manufacturing of new formulations providing a robust immune response against specific diseases is of paramount importance. This can be partially faced by introducing vaccination systems based on nanostructured materials, and in particular, nanoassemblies obtained by the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) method. This has emerged, in recent years, as a very promising alternative for the design and optimization of effective vaccination platforms. In particular, the versatility and modularity of the LbL method provide very powerful tools for fabricating functional materials, opening new avenues on the design of different biomedical tools, including very specific vaccination platforms. Moreover, the possibility to control the shape, size, and chemical composition of the supramolecular nanoassemblies obtained by the LbL method offers new opportunities for manufacturing materials which can be administered following specific routes and present very specific targeting. Thus, it will be possible to increase the patient convenience and the efficacy of the vaccination programs. This review presents a general overview on the state of the art of the fabrication of vaccination platforms based on LbL materials, trying to highlight some important advantages offered by these systems.

Recent progress on production technologies of food waste-based biochar and its fabrication method as electrode materials in energy storage application

The abundance of food waste across the globe has called for the mitigation and reduction of these discarded wastes. Herein, the potential of biochar derived from food waste is unquestionable as it provides a sustainable way of utilizing the abundance of available biomass, as well as an effective way of preserving the ecosystem through the reduction of concerning environmental issues. This review focuses on the food waste-based biochar as advanced electrode materials in the energy storage devices. Efforts have been made to present and discuss the current exploration of the food waste utilization, along with the biochar production technologies through thermochemical conversion, including combustion, gasification, and pyrolysis method. Finding its limitation in literatures, discussion on the food waste-based biochar fabrication method as the electrode materials is elaborated, alongside the current food waste-based biochar that has been explored in the energy application thus far. Towards the end, the outlook and perspective on the further development of food waste-based biochar have been outlined.

Preprogrammed microfluidic system for parallel anti-reflection coating by layer-by-layer assembly

Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is a widely used method of nanofilm coating in various technology applications; however, the coating process is typically time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study presents a microfluidic platform that performs LbL assembly in a fast, parallel, preprogrammed manner, with only water-head pressure as the driving force. The platform generates periodic sequential outflows with four solutions (TiO₂ and SiO₂ nanoparticle solutions and two washing solutions), and simultaneously applies 12 different conditions of coating period (0.6-4 min) and shear stress (0.7-15 dyn cm^-2) for anti-reflection coating in the visual spectrum. The thickness and roughness of the coated films are well regulated at the nanoscale using shear stress, coating period, and the number of bilayers. In this way, our study reveals the substantial influence of shear stress on the relative composition of the nanoparticles and void volume in the films, thereby varying the film transmittance with a maximum value of 98%. Compared to the conventional immersive coating method, the coating duration of our method was 15 times faster. This parallel coating method is highly effective for determining optimized coating conditions.

Self-Patterning Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films: Influence of Deposition Steps and Drying in a Vacuum

Typically, laterally patterned films are fabricated by lithographic techniques, external fields, or di-block copolymer self-assembly. We investigate the self-patterning of polyelectrolyte multilayers, poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDADMA)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS)_short. The low PSS molecular weight (M_w(PSS_short) = 10.7 kDa) is necessary because PSS_short is somewhat mobile within a PDADMA/PSS_short film, as demonstrated by the exponential growth regime at the beginning of the PDADMA/PSS_short multilayer build-up. No self-patterning was observed when the PDADMA/PSS film consisted of only immobile polyelectrolytes. Atomic force microscopy images show that self-patterning begins when the film consists of seven deposited PDADMA/PSS_short bilayers. When more bilayers are added, the surface ribbing evolved into bands, and circular domains were finally observed. The mean distance between the surface structures increased monotonously with the film thickness, from 70 to 250 nm. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that exposure to vacuum resulted in thinning of the film and an increase in the mean distance between domains. The effect is weaker for PSS_short-terminated films than for PDADMA-terminated films. The mechanism leading to domain formation during film build-up and the effect of post-preparation treatment are discussed.

Polyelectrolyte Multilayers on Soft Colloidal Nanosurfaces: A New Life for the Layer-By-Layer Method

The Layer-by-Layer (LbL) method is a well-established method for the assembly of nanomaterials with controlled structure and functionality through the alternate deposition onto a template of two mutual interacting molecules, e.g., polyelectrolytes bearing opposite charge. The current development of this methodology has allowed the fabrication of a broad range of systems by assembling different types of molecules onto substrates with different chemical nature, size, or shape, resulting in numerous applications for LbL systems. In particular, the use of soft colloidal nanosurfaces, including nanogels, vesicles, liposomes, micelles, and emulsion droplets as a template for the assembly of LbL materials has undergone a significant growth in recent years due to their potential impact on the design of platforms for the encapsulation and controlled release of active molecules. This review proposes an analysis of some of the current trends on the fabrication of LbL materials using soft colloidal nanosurfaces, including liposomes, emulsion droplets, or even cells, as templates. Furthermore, some fundamental aspects related to deposition methodologies commonly used for fabricating LbL materials on colloidal templates together with the most fundamental physicochemical aspects involved in the assembly of LbL materials will also be discussed.

A closer physico-chemical look to the Layer-by-Layer electrostatic self-assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers

The fabrication of polyelectrolyte multilayer films (PEMs) using the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) method is one of the most versatile approaches for manufacturing functional surfaces. This is the result of the possibility to control the assembly process of the LbL films almost at will, by changing the nature of the assembled materials (building blocks), the assembly conditions (pH, ionic strength, temperature, etc.) or even by changing some other operational parameters which may impact in the structure and physico-chemical properties of the obtained multi-layered films. Therefore, the understanding of the impact of the above mentioned parameters on the assembly process of LbL materials plays a critical role in the potential use of the LbL method for the fabrication of new functional materials with technological interest. This review tries to provide a broad physico-chemical perspective to the study of the fabrication process of PEMs by the LbL method, which allows one to take advantage of the many possibilities offered for this approach on the fabrication of new functional nanomaterials.

Self-Limiting Assembly Approaches for Nanoadditive Manufacturing of Electronic Thin Films and Devices

Most electronics consist of functional thin films with tens of nanometer thicknesses. It is usually challenging to control the growth of these thin films using conventional solution-based approaches. Nanoadditive manufacturing, a method to deposit electronically desired molecules, polymers, or nanomaterials in a layer-by-layer (LbL) fashion, has emerged as a promising technique for the precise control of film growth and device fabrication. Here, basic principles of nanoadditive manufacturing approaches with self-limiting characteristics are summarized with a particular focus on Langmuir-Blodgett assembly and LbL assembly. Additively manufactured electronic thin films with properties of conductors, semiconductors, and dielectrics are reviewed, followed by a discussion of their application in various electronics, such as field-effect transistors, sensors, memory devices, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and electrochromic devices. Finally, challenges and future developments of these approaches are proposed. The resulting analysis reveals promising opportunities of nanoadditive manufacturing for the solution-based fabrication of electronic devices.

Combining Top-Down and Bottom-Up with Photodegradable Layer-by-Layer Films

Layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of polymer coatings is a bottom-up fabrication technique with broad applicability across a wide range of materials and applications that require control over interfacial properties. While most LbL coatings are chemically uniform in directions both tangent and perpendicular to their substrate, control over the properties of surface coatings as a function of space can enhance their function. To contribute to this rapidly advancing field, our group has focused on the top-down spatiotemporal control possible with photochemically reactive LbL coatings, harnessed through charge-shifting polyelectrolytes enabled by photocleavable ester pendants. The photolysis of the photocleavable esters degrades LbL films containing these polyelectrolytes. The chemical structures of the photocleavable groups dictate the wavelengths responsible for disrupting these coatings, ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared in our work. In addition, spatially segregating reactive groups into "compartments" within LbL films has enabled us to fabricate reactive free-standing polymer films and multiheight photopatterned coatings. Overall, by combining bottom-up and top-down approaches, photoreactive LbL films enable precise control over the interfacial properties of polymer and composite coatings.

Geo-material surface modification of microchips using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly for subsurface energy and environmental applications

A key constraint in the application of microfluidic technology to subsurface flow and transport processes is the surface discrepancy between microchips and the actual rocks/soils. This research employs a novel layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technology to produce rock-forming mineral coatings on microchip surfaces. The outcome of the work is a series of 'surface-mimetic micro-reservoirs (SMMR)' that represent multi-scales and multi-types of natural rocks/soils. For demonstration, the clay pores of sandstones and mudrocks are reconstructed by representatively coating montmorillonite and kaolinite in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchips in a wide range of channel sizes (width of 10-250 μm, depth of 40-100 μm) and on glass substrates. The morphological and structural properties of mineral coatings are characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope and profilometer. The coating stability is tested by dynamic flooding experiments. The surface wettability is characterized by measuring mineral oil-water contact angles. The results demonstrate the formation of nano- to micro-scale, fully-covered and stable mineral surfaces with varying wetting properties. There is an opportunity to use this work in the development of microfluidic technology-based applications for subsurface energy and environmental research.

The role played by modified bioinspired surfaces in interfacial properties of biomaterials

The success of a biomaterial relies on an appropriate interaction between the surface of that biomaterial and the surrounding environment; more specifically, the success of a biomaterial depends on how fluids, proteins, and cells interact with the foreign material. For this reason, the surface properties of biomaterial, such as composition, charge, wettability, and roughness, must be optimized for a desired application to be achieved. In this review we highlight different bioinspired approaches that are used to manipulate and fine-tune the interfacial properties of biomaterials. Inspired by noteworthy natural processes, researchers have developed materials with a functional anatomy that range from hierarchical hybrid structures to self-cleaning interfaces. In this review we focus on (1) the creation of particles and modified surfaces inspired by the structure and composition of biogenic mineralized tissues, (2) the development of biofunctional coatings, (3) materials inspired by biomembranes and proteins, and (4) the design of superwettable materials. Our intention is to point out different bioinspired methodologies that have been used to design materials for biomedical applications and to discuss how interfacial properties modified by manipulation of these materials determine their final biological response. Our objective is to present future research directions and to highlight the potential of bioinspired materials. We hope this review will provide an understanding of the interplay between interfacial properties and biological response so that successful biomaterials can be achieved.

Innovation in Layer-by-Layer Assembly

Methods for depositing thin films are important in generating functional materials for diverse applications in a wide variety of fields. Over the last half-century, the layer-by-layer assembly of nanoscale films has received intense and growing interest. This has been fueled by innovation in the available materials and assembly technologies, as well as the film-characterization techniques. In this Review, we explore, discuss, and detail innovation in layer-by-layer assembly in terms of past and present developments, and we highlight how these might guide future advances. A particular focus is on conventional and early developments that have only recently regained interest in the layer-by-layer assembly field. We then review unconventional assemblies and approaches that have been gaining popularity, which include inorganic/organic hybrid materials, cells and tissues, and the use of stereocomplexation, patterning, and dip-pen lithography, to name a few. A relatively recent development is the use of layer-by-layer assembly materials and techniques to assemble films in a single continuous step. We name this "quasi"-layer-by-layer assembly and discuss the impacts and innovations surrounding this approach. Finally, the application of characterization methods to monitor and evaluate layer-by-layer assembly is discussed, as innovation in this area is often overlooked but is essential for development of the field. While we intend for this Review to be easily accessible and act as a guide to researchers new to layer-by-layer assembly, we also believe it will provide insight to current researchers in the field and help guide future developments and innovation.

Conformal Polymeric Multilayer Coatings on Sulfur Cathodes via the Layer-by-Layer Deposition for High Capacity Retention in Li-S Batteries

We report on the conformal coating of thickness-tunable multilayers directly onto the sulfur (S₈) cathodes by the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition for the significant improvement in the performances of Li-S batteries even without key additives (LiNO₃) in the electrolyte. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) multilayers on a single poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/PAA priming bilayer, deposited on the S₈ cathodes, effectively protected from the polysulfide leakage, while providing a Li⁺ ion diffusion channel. As a result, PAH/PAA/(PEO/PAA)₃ multilayer-coated cathodes exhibited the highest capacity retention (806 mAh g^-1) after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, as well as the high C-rate capability up to 2.0 C. Furthermore, the multilayer coating effectively mitigated the polysulfide shuttle effect in the absent of LiNO₃ additives in the electrolyte.

Self-assembly and structure of flagellin–polyelectrolyte composite layers: polyelectrolyte induced flagellar filament formation during the alternating deposition process

This study first reveals a new type of linearly growing polyelectrolyte multilayer buildup mechanism, when one of the components (PAH) induces the self-assembly of the oppositely charged component (flagellin), creating a filamentous nanostructured coating.

A novel hybrid self-assembly process for synthesising stratified polyethylene–organoclay films

This study reports the first effort to synthesize a new type of polyethylene–organoclay multilayer film with subsequent repeating depositions.

Tuning assembly and enzymatic degradation of silk/poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) multilayers via molecular weight and hydrophobicity

We report on enzymatically degradable nanothin coatings obtained by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of silk fibroin with poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) via hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. We found that both silk β-sheet content, controlled through dipping and spin-assisted LbL, and PVCL molecular weight regulate film thickness, microstructure, pH-stability, and biodegradability with a nanoscale precision. Thickness of (silk/PVCL) films increased with increase in PVCL molecular weight and decrease in deposition pH. The impact of assembly pH on film growth was more dramatic for dipped films. These systems show a significant rise in thickness with increase in PVCL molecular weight at pH < 5 but become independent on polymer chain length at pH ≥ 5. We also found that spin-assisted films exhibited a greater stability at elevated pH and against enzymatic degradation as compared to their dipped counterparts. For both film types, the pH and enzymatic stability was improved with increasing PVCL length and β-sheet content, indicating enhanced hydrophobic and hydrogen-bonded interactions between PVCL and silk. Finally, we fabricated spherical and cubical (silk/PVCL) LbL capsules of regulated permeability and enzymatic degradation. Our approach gives a unique opportunity to tune thickness, morphology, structure, and biodegradability rate of silk films and capsules by varying silk secondary structure and PVCL length. Accounting for all-aqueous fabrication and the biocompatibility of both polymers these biodegradable materials provide novel platforms for delivery systems and medical devices.

Multilayer assembly. Technology-driven layer-by-layer assembly of nanofilms

Multilayer thin films have garnered intense scientific interest due to their potential application in diverse fields such as catalysis, optics, energy, membranes, and biomedicine. Here we review the current technologies for multilayer thin-film deposition using layer-by-layer assembly, and we discuss the different properties and applications arising from the technologies. We highlight five distinct routes of assembly—immersive, spin, spray, electromagnetic, and fluidic assembly—each of which offers material and processing advantages for assembling layer-by-layer films. Each technology encompasses numerous innovations for automating and improving layering, which is important for research and industrial applications. Furthermore, we discuss how judicious choice of the assembly technology enables the engineering of thin films with tailor-made physicochemical properties, such as distinct-layer stratification, controlled roughness, and highly ordered packing.

Chain conformation and dynamics in spin-assisted weak polyelectrolyte multilayers

We report on the effect of the deposition technique on film layering, stability, and chain mobility in weak polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer (LbL) films. Ellipsometry and neutron reflectometry (NR) showed that shear forces arising during spin-assisted assembly lead to smaller amounts of adsorbed polyelectrolytes within LbL films, result in a higher degree of internal film order, and dramatically improve stability of assemblies in salt solutions as compared to dip-assisted LbL assemblies. The underlying flattening of polyelectrolyte chains in spin-assisted LbL films was also revealed as an increase in ionization degree of the assembled weak polyelectrolytes. As demonstrated by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), strong binding between spin-deposited polyelectrolytes results in a significant slowdown of chain diffusion in salt solutions as compared to dip-deposited films. Moreover, salt-induced chain intermixing in the direction perpendicular to the substrate is largely inhibited in spin-deposited films, resulting in only subdiffusional (<2 Å) chain displacements even after 200 h exposure to 1 M NaCl solutions. This persistence of polyelectrolyte layering has important ramifications for multistage drug delivery and optical applications of LbL assemblies.

Tuning the resonant frequency of resonators using molecular surface self-assembly approach

In this work, a new method to tune the resonant frequency of microfabricated resonator using molecular layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly approach is demonstrated. By simply controlling the polymer concentration and the number of layers deposited, precisely tuning the frequency of microfabricated resonators is realized. Due to its selective deposition through specific molecular recognitions, such technique avoids the high-cost and complex steps of conventional semiconductor fabrications and is able to tune individual diced device. Briefly, film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) is used to demonstrate the tuning process and two types of LbL deposition methods are compared. The film thickness and morphology have been characterized by UV-vis reflection spectra, ellipsometer and AFM. As a result, the maximum resonant frequency shift of FBAR reaches more than 20 MHz, meaning 1.4% tunability at least. The minimum frequency shift is nearly 10 kHZ per bilayer, indicating 7 ppm tuning resolution. Pressure cooker test (PCT) is performed to evaluate the reliability of LbL coated FBAR. Furthermore, applications for wireless broadband communication and chemical sensors of LbL coated FBAR have been demonstrated.

Dip- and spin-assisted stereocomplexation-driven LbL self-assembly involving homochiral PVA-g-OLLA and PVA-g-ODLA copolymers

Layer by Layer (LbL) thin films stemming from the formation of stereocomplex between oligolactate with opposite chirality (OLLA and ODLA) covalently anchored onto poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) chains is described herein for the first time.

Layer by layer H-bonded assembly of P4VP with various hydroxylated PPFS: impact of the donor strength on growth mechanism and surface features

Hydrogen bond mediated films made by step by step deposition of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) and hydroxylated poly(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene) (PPFS) copolymers prepared by thiol para-fluoro coupling, bearing either one (PPFSME) or two (PPFSMPD) hydrogenated hydroxyl groups or a (poly)fluorinated hydroxyl (PPFSOH), respectively, were successfully constructed. The influence of the structural parameters, such as the hydroxyl environment (which dictates the H-bond strength) was in-depth investigated in terms of their impact on (i) growth mechanism, (ii) internal organization, and (iii) surface features. The use of the weaker H-bond donor partner (PPFSME) leads to low quality films composed of irregularly distributed aggregates. While [PPFSMPD/P4VP] multilayer films are comparatively thick and composed of stratified layers with smooth topology, the use of PPFSOH with P4VP yields thin films made of mixed and interpenetrated polymer layers. Playing on the interaction strength appears as a powerful tool to elaborate tailored multilayer films with molecularly tunable properties.

Comparative study of layer-by-layer deposition techniques for poly(sodium phosphate) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride)

An inorganic short chain polymer, poly(sodium phosphate), PSP, together with poly(allylamine hydrochloride), PAH, is used to fabricate layer-by-layer (LbL) films. The thickness, roughness, contact angle, and optical transmittance of these films are studied depending on three parameters: the precursor solution concentrations (10-3 and 10-4 M), the number of bilayers deposited (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 bilayers), and the specific technique used for the LbL fabrication (dipping or spraying). In most cases of this experimental study, the roughness of the nanofilms increases with the number of bilayers. This contradicts the basic observations made in standard LbL assemblies where the roughness decreases for thicker coatings. In fact, a wide range of thickness and roughness was achieved by means of adjusting the three parameters mentioned above. For instance, a roughness of 1.23 or 205 nm root mean square was measured for 100 bilayer coatings. Contact angles close to 0 were observed. Moreover, high optical transmittance is also reported, above 90%, for 80 bilayer films fabricated with the 10-4 M solutions. Therefore, these multilayer structures can be used to obtain transparent superhydrophilic surfaces.

A comparison of thermal transitions in dip- and spray-assisted layer-by-layer assemblies

Spray-assisted layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is far more rapid than conventional dip-assisted assembly methods and has gained widespread interest recently. Even so, it has remained unclear as to how the structure and properties of the resulting LbL film vary with processing method. Here, we compared the thermal properties of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and PEO/poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) hydrogen-bonded LbL assemblies prepared using both dip-assisted and spray-assisted deposition methods. While the surface morphologies of PEO/PAA LbL assemblies were similar, those of PEO/PMAA LbL assemblies were greatly influenced by deposition method. In both PEO/PAA and PEO/PMAA LbL assemblies, glass transition temperatures were not influenced by deposition method, but the transition's breadth was consistently larger for the spray-assisted LbL films. These results indicate that the internal structure of spray-assisted LbL films is slightly more heterogeneous, possibly arising from the shorter time scale of deposition.

Layer-by-layer assembly of ferrocene-modified linear polyethylenimine redox polymer films

Herein, both electrostatic and covalent layer-by-layer assembly were used for the construction of multicomposite thin films using a ferrocene-modified linear poly(ethylenimine) redox polymer (Fc-C6-LPEI) as the cationic polyelectrolye, and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(glutamic acid) (PGA), or glucose oxidase (GOX) as the negative polyelectrolyte. The assembly of the multilayer films was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), UV/Vis spectroscopy, and ellipsometry with the enzymatic response of the films containing GOX being characterized via constant potential amperometry. CV measurements suggested that the successful buildup of multilayer films was dependent upon the nature of the anionic polyelectrolyte used. Electrostatic assembly of films composed of Fc-C6-LPEI and either PAA or PGA produced large oxidation peak current densities of 630 and 670 μA cm(-2), respectively, during cyclic voltammetry. Increased measured absorbance by UV/Vis spectroscopy and increased measured film thicknesses (400-600 nm) by ellipsometry provided additional evidence of successful film formation. In contrast, the films incorporating GOX that were electrostatically assembled surprisingly produced significantly lower electrochemical responses (12 μA cm(-2)), low absorbance values, and reduced film thicknesses (~15 nm), and glucose electro-oxidation current densities less than 1 μA cm(-2), which all suggested unstable or minimal film formation. Subsequently, we developed a covalent layer-by-layer approach to fabricate films of Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX by covalently linking the amine groups of Fc-C6-LPEI to the aldehyde groups of periodate-oxidized glucose oxidase. Covalent assembly of the Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX films produced oxidation peak current densities during cyclic voltammetry of 40 μA cm(-2) and glucose electro-oxidation current densities of 220 μA cm(-2). These films also showed an increase in their thicknesses (~140 nm) relative to the electrostatic GOX films. For the films containing either PAA or PGA, the pH of the polymer solutions used for construction was found to have a significant effect on the response of the multilayer films, and the electrochemical response of the Fc-C6-LPEI/PAA, Fc-C6-LPEI/PGA, or covalently assembled Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX films could be tuned by varying the number of bilayers (n=1-16) in the film. These results are important because this is the first report of the use of the novel Fc-C6-LPEI redox polymer in the successful development of multicomposite layer-by-layer films. The electrochemical response achieved with the covalently assembled Fc-C6-LPEI/GOX films demonstrates that this redox polymer and layer-by-layer assembly technique can be used for possible biosensor and biofuel applications, and the success of multiple anionic polyelectrolytes could lead to additional applications with other enzyme systems.

Inkjet-assisted layer-by-layer printing of encapsulated arrays

We present the facile fabrication of hydrogen-bonded layer-by-layer (LbL) microscopic dot arrays with encapsulated dye compounds. We demonstrate patterned encapsulation of Rhodamine dye as a model compound within poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/poly(methacrylic acid) (PVPON/PMAA) LbL dots constructed without an intermediate washing step. The inkjet printing technique improves encapsulation efficiency, reduces processing time, facilitates complex patterning, and controls lateral and vertical dimensions with diameters ranging from 130 to 35 μm (mostly controlled by the droplet size and the substrate hydrophobicity) and thickness of several hundred nanometers. The microscopic dots composed of hydrogen-bonded PVPON/PMAA components are also found to be stable in acidic solution after fabrication. This facile, fast, and sophisticated inkjet encapsulation method can be applied to other systems for fast fabrication of large-scale, high-resolution complex arrays of dye-encapsulated LbL dots.

Deposition Mechanisms in Layer-by-Layer or Step-by-Step Deposition Methods: From Elastic and Impermeable Films to Soft Membranes with Ion Exchange Properties

The modification of solid-liquid interfaces with polyelectrolyte multilayer films appears as a versatile tool to confer new functionalities to surfaces in environmentally friendly conditions. Indeed such films are deposited by alternate dipping of the substrates in aqueous solutions containing the interacting species or spraying these solutions on the surface of the substrate. Spin coating is more and more used to produce similar films. The aim of this short review article is to provide an unifying picture about the deposition mechanisms of polyelectrolyte multilayer films. Often those films are described as growing either in a linear or in a supralinear growth regime with the number of deposited “layer pairs”. The growth regime of PEM films can be controlled by operational parameters like the temperature or the ionic strength of the used solutions. The control over the growth regime of the films as a function of the number of deposition steps allows to control their functional properties: either hard and impermeable films in the case of linear growth or soft and permeable films in the case of supralinear growth. Such different properties can be obtained with a given combination of interacting species by changing the operational parameters during the film deposition.

Hydrogen-bonding-driven self-assembly of PEGylated organosilica nanoparticles with poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solutions and in layer-by-layer deposition at solid surfaces

PEGylated organosilica nanoparticles have been synthesized through self-condensation of (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane in dimethyl sulfoxide into thiolated nanoparticles with their subsequent reaction with methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) maleimide. The PEGylated nanoparticles showed excellent colloidal stability over a wide range of pH in contrast to the parent thiolated nanoparticles, which have a tendency to aggregate irreversibly under acidic conditions (pH < 3.0). Due to the presence of a poly(ethylene glycol)-based corona, the PEGylated nanoparticles are capable of forming hydrogen-bonded interpolymer complexes with poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solutions under acidic conditions, resulting in larger aggregates. The use of hydrogen-bonding interactions allows more efficient attachment of the nanoparticles to surfaces. The alternating deposition of PEGylated nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) on silicon wafer surfaces in a layer-by-layer fashion leads to multilayered coatings. The self-assembly of PEGylated nanoparticles with poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solutions and at solid surfaces was compared to the behavior of linear poly(ethylene glycol). The nanoparticle system creates thicker layers than the poly(ethylene glycol), and a thicker layer is obtained on a poly(acrylic acid) surface than on a silica surface, because of the effects of hydrogen bonding. Some implications of these hydrogen-bonding-driven interactions between PEGylated nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) for pharmaceutical formulations are discussed.

Osteoconductive protamine-based polyelectrolyte multilayer functionalized surfaces

The integration of orthopedic implants with host bone presents a major challenge in joint arthroplasty, spinal fusion and tumor reconstruction. The cellular microenvironment can be programmed via implant surface functionalization allowing direct modulation of osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation at the implant--bone interface. The development of layer-by-layer assembled polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) architectures has greatly expanded our ability to fabricate intricate nanometer to micron scale thin film coatings that conform to complex implant geometries. The in vivo therapeutic efficacy of thin PEM implant coatings for numerous biomedical applications has previously been reported. We have fabricated protamine-based PEM thin films that support the long-term proliferation and differentiation of pre-osteoblast cells on non-cross-linked film-coated surfaces. These hydrophilic PEM functionalized surfaces with nanometer-scale roughness facilitated increased deposition of calcified matrix by osteoblasts in vitro, and thus offer the potential to enhance implant integration with host bone. The coatings can make an immediate impact in the osteogenic culture of stem cells and assessment of the osteogenic potential of new therapeutic factors.

Dynamic aspects of films prepared by a sequential deposition of species: perspectives for smart and responsive materials

The deposition of surface coatings using a step-by-step approach from mutually interacting species allows the fabrication of so called "multilayered films". These coatings are very versatile and easy to produce in environmentally friendly conditions, mostly from aqueous solution. They find more and more applications in many hot topic areas, such as in biomaterials and nanoelectronics but also in stimuli-responsive films. We aim to review the most recent developments in such stimuli-responsive coatings based on layer-by-layer (LBL) depositions in relationship to the properties of these coatings. The most investigated stimuli are based on changes in ionic strength, temperature, exposure to light, and mechanical forces. The possibility to induce a transition from linear to exponential growth in thickness and to change the charge compensation from "intrinsic" to "extrinsic" by controlling parameters such as temperature, pH, and ionic strength are the ways to confer their responsiveness to the films. Chemical post-modifications also allow to significantly modify the film properties.

Humidity responsive asymmetric free-standing multilayered film

A humido-responsive free-standing film has been created using layer-by-layer assembly technique. Polyethylenimine (PEI) at high pH was assembled with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) at low pH on a Teflon substrate to yield a micro-nanostructured surface that can be made superhydrophobic after being coated with a low surface energy compound. The resulting asymmetric free-standing film with one surface being superhydrophobic while the other is hydrophilic after detachment from the substrate can undergo reversible bending/unbending shape transitions when the environmental humidity is changed. The bending/unbending movement of the free-standing film can be ascribed to the different responses of these two surfaces to humidity.
