Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry of Ultrathin Adsorbed PS-r-PMMA Copolymers on Silica

Competing polymer-substrate interactions mitigate random copolymer adsorption

Annealing a supported polymer film in the melt state, a common practice to relieve residual stresses and erase thermal history, can result in the development of an irreversibly adsorbed nanolayer. This layer of polymer chains physically adsorbed to the substrate interface has been shown to influence thin film properties such as viscosity and glass transition temperature. Its growth is attributed to many simultaneous interactions between individual monomer units and the substrate stabilizing chains against desorption. A better understanding of how these specific polymer-substrate interactions influence the growth of the adsorbed layer is needed, particularly given how strongly the properties of geometrically-confined polymeric systems are impacted by interfaces. Here, we use homopolymers and random copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate to form adsorbed layers and examine the influence of chemical composition and the resulting polymer-substrate interactions on adsorbed layer growth and structure. Ellipsometric measurements reveal a non-monotonic trend between composition and thickness of the adsorbed layers that is inconsistent with the behavior normally exhibited by random copolymers, being intermediate to their respective homopolymers. We examine this trend in terms of plateau thickness and growth kinetics at two different annealing temperatures and propose a mechanism for how different polymer-substrate interactions combine to influence adsorption when copolymer films are annealed. By introducing compositional heterogeneity, this mechanism extends the study of irreversible adsorption to complex chemistries and provides for a more general understanding of how annealing should be accounted for in the proper selection and processing of polymer thin films for applications in nanotechnology.

Dielectric properties of polymer-particle nanocomposites influenced by electronic nature of filler surfaces

The interface between the polymer and the particle has a critical role in altering the properties of a composite dielectric. Polymer-ceramic nanocomposites are promising dielectric materials for many electronic and power devices, combining the high dielectric constant of ceramic particles with the high dielectric breakdown strength of a polymer. Self-assembled monolayers of electron rich or electron poor organophosphate coupling groups were applied to affect the filler-polymer interface and investigate the role of this interface on composite behavior. The interface has potential to influence dielectric properties, in particular the leakage and breakdown resistance. The composite films synthesized from the modified filler particles dispersed into an epoxy polymer matrix were analyzed by dielectric spectroscopy, breakdown strength, and leakage current measurements. The data indicate that significant reduction in leakage currents and dielectric losses and improvement in dielectric breakdown strengths resulted when electropositive phenyl, electron-withdrawing functional groups were located at the polymer-particle interface. At a 30 vol % particle concentration, dielectric composite films yielded a maximum energy density of ~8 J·cm(-3) for TiO2-epoxy nanocomposites and ~9.5 J·cm(-3) for BaTiO3-epoxy nanocomposites.

Interplay of surface and confinement effects on the molecular relaxation dynamics of nanoconfined poly(methyl methacrylate) chains

The thermally stimulated current (TSC) signatures of the primary (alpha) transition and its precursor, the Johary-Goldstein (beta) relaxation, are used to probe effects of nanoconfinement on the dielectric relaxation dynamics of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) radically polymerised in situ 50 angstroms mean pore size silica-gel. Nanoconfinement leads to a broadened and low-temperature-shifted beta band (peaking at Tbeta, with deltaTbeta = T(conf.)beta - T(bulk)beta = -15 degrees C for a heating rate of 5 deg/min), signifying the occurrence of faster relaxing moieties compared to the bulk-like PMMA film. Furthermore, both TSCs and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) estimate a rise of the glass transition temperature for the confined phase ([Formula: see text]= +13 degrees C) and an increased width for the corresponding transition signals, relative to the signals in the bulk. Simple free-volume and entropy models seem inadequate to provide a collective description of the above perturbations. The observation of a spatial heterogeneity regarding the relaxation dynamics is discussed in terms of the presence of a motional gradient, with less mobile segments near the interface and more mobile segments in the core, and the interplay of adsorption ( e.g., strong physical interactions that slow down molecular mobilities) and confinement effects ( e.g., lower entanglements concentration and local density fluctuations that provide regions of increased free space). The results suggest that in the case of high-molecular-weight polymers confined in small-pore systems, adsorption effects have considerable bearing on the glass transition phenomenon whereas confinement primarily influences side-chains' rotational mobilities. The confinement effect is expected to dominate over adsorption for PMMA phases occluded in higher pore sizes and silanised walls.
