Thin adhesive oil films lead to anomalously stable mixtures of water in oil

Oil and water can only be mixed by dispersing droplets of one fluid in the other. When two droplets approach one another, the thin film that separates them invariably becomes unstable, causing the droplets to coalesce. The only known way to avoid this instability is through addition of a third component, typically a surfactant, which stabilizes the thin film at its equilibrium thickness. We report the observation that a thin fluid film of oil separating two water droplets can lead to an adhesive interaction between the droplets. Moreover, this interaction prevents their coalescence over timescales of several weeks, without the use of any surfactant or solvent.

Numerical investigation of ultrasound focusing and bubble collapse

Ultrasound focusing and microbubble collapse are numerically investigated using a level-set interface tracking method for two-phase flows with multiple interfaces. The computations for ultrasound propagating through a spherical lens demonstrate the ultrasound refraction and pressure intensification at the rear of the lens. The focusing of the initial negative pressure wave through the lens induces a converging flow and the focusing of the subsequent positive pressure wave further intensifies the pressure at the lens. Computations are extended to bubble oscillations near the focusing lens and compared with the no-lens case. The lens not only amplifies the bubble expansion and contraction rates significantly but also generates a larger pressure gradient across the bubble. This ultrasound focusing effect contributes to the asymmetric collapse of the bubble and the formation of a liquid jet that penetrates the bubble. The effects of lens size, initial bubble radius and bubble-lens distance on bubble expansion and liquid jet are further investigated.

Hydrogel-assisted microfluidic spinning of stretchable fibers via fluidic and interfacial self-adaptations

Stretchable polymeric fibers have enormous potential, but their production requires rigorous environmental controls and considerable resource consumption. It's also challenging for elastic polymers with high performance but poor spinnability, such as silicones like polydimethylsiloxane and Ecoflex. We present a hydrogel-assisted microfluidic spinning (HAMS) method to address these challenges by encapsulating their prepolymers within arbitrarily long, protective, and sacrificable hydrogel fibers. By designing simple apparatuses and manipulating the fluidic and interfacial self-adaptations of oil/water flows, we successfully produce fibers with widely controllable diameter (0.04 to 3.70 millimeters), notable length, high quality (e.g., smooth surface, whole-length uniformity, and rounded section), and remarkable stretchability (up to 1300%) regardless of spinnability. Uniquely, this method allows an easy, effective, and controllable reshaping production of helical fibers with exceptional stretchability and mechanical compliance. We deeply reveal the mechanisms in producing these fibers and demonstrate their potential as textile components, optoelectronic devices, and actuators. The HAMS method would be a powerful tool for mass-producing high-quality stretchable fibers.

Observation of Coherent Perfect Absorption in Oil Film on Water Surface and Sensitive Detection of Refractive Index Anisotropy in the Film

Sharp reflection dips of 50% were observed when white light was incident from the side of a cell on a 1 μm thick film of silicone oil (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS, nearly transparent in visible light, with the extinction coefficient κ ≈ 0.0001) above a water surface in the cell so that the total reflection condition was satisfied at the oil-air interface. This is the first observation of a coherent perfect absorption (CPA) phenomenon in liquid. The experimental results can be reproduced by the Fresnel reflectance of the monolayer film, but the wavelength positions at which the dip appears for s-polarized and p-polarized light are reversed if the refractive index of the oil film is assumed to be isotropic. The experimental results were correctly reproduced by assuming that the extraordinary-ray refractive index (light polarized perpendicular to the interface) is 1% larger than the ordinary-ray refractive index (light polarized parallel to the interface). This indicates that the polarization dependence of the CPA phenomenon is extremely sensitive to the difference between the in-plane and out-of-plane refractive indices of the thin film.

Deformation-dependent polydimethylsiloxane permeability measured using osmotic microactuators

In soft solids, large deformations significantly alter molecular structure and device geometry, which can impact other properties. In the case of mass transport, an interplay between flux and mechanical deformation results. Here we demonstrate a platform for the simultaneous characterization of mechano-permselectivity using the (slow) transport of water through polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a challenging test case. The platform uses micron-sized, cylindrical, NaCl solution-filled PDMS chambers encapsulated by selectively-permeable PDMS thin film membranes. When placed in a high chemical potential environment (high water potential) the osmotic pressure difference between the chamber and environment induces water to flow through the PDMS membrane into the chamber, resulting in membrane bulging. A model combining membrane flux and nonlinear elasticity captures the time-dependent response well, but only when a deformation-dependent permeability is used. Notably, the permeability of water through PDMS decreases by nearly an order of magnitude, from 2 × 10-12 to 5 × 10-13 m2 s-1, due primarily to its thickness decreasing by nearly an order of magnitude as the average biaxial stretch increases from 1 to 2.75.

Development of a transferable coarse-grained model of polydimethylsiloxane

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a popular silicon-based polymer with advanced applications in microfluidics and nanocomposites. The slow dynamics of polymer chains in such complex systems hinders molecular dynamics investigations based on all atom force fields. This limitation can be overcome by exploiting finely tuned coarse-grained (CG) models. This paper develops a transferable CG model of PDMS, compatible with the recent Martini 3 force field, using structural and thermodynamic properties as targets in the parametrization, including a vast set of experimental free energies of transfer. We validate the model transferability by reproducing the correct scaling laws for the PDMS gyration radius in the melt and good and bad solvents. We successfully test the model by reproducing the wetting behavior of water and acetonitrile on PDMS and the phase behavior of a PDMS-peptide triblock copolymer system. This work sets the stage for computational studies involving the interaction between PDMS and many synthetic and biological molecules modeled within the Martini framework.

Critical Thicknesses of Free-Standing Thin Films of Molten Polymers: A Multiscale Simulation Study

The free-standing thin films of melted poly(ethylene oxide) have been extensively simulated by the chemically specific coarse-grained (CG) molecular dynamics (MD) method. It is revealed that if the polymer thin film becomes thinner than some critical value, it would initially turn into a fiber, accompanied by an increase in the free surface area and a decrease in surface tension. A simple but efficient scheme is proposed to determine the critical interfacial thickness and the film thickness from the non-intrinsic density and pressure profiles, and the ratio of the two thicknesses is defined as the interfacial fraction. The critical film thickness is found to increase with the number of chains or equivalently the transverse area. With increasing temperature, the critical interfacial thickness increases a bit whereas the critical film thickness slightly decreases, highlighting the important role of the interfacial fraction. For both of the "critical" and "thick" films, the outermost surface layers are confirmed to undergo the greatest movements. The "critical" film exhibits the intrinsic interfacial thickness and bulk density almost identical to those of the "thick" film, dictating the thickness independence of the surface tension. Therefore, the phase stability of the film is essentially determined from the intrinsic thickness of the bulk layer, and the identified temperature dependence of the critical film thickness can be mainly explained by the surface tension.

FM-AFM with a Hanging Fiber Probe for the Study of Liquid-Liquid Interfaces

This work describes how a frequency modulation atomic force microscope (AFM) using a hanging fiber force probe made from a quartz tuning fork provides local measurements on liquid-liquid interfaces. After detailing the manufacture and calibration of the force probe, we provide evidence that this AFM is suitable for quantitative measurements at the interface between two liquids. The repeatability of the measurements allows a poly-dimethylsiloxane-water moving interface to be monitored over several hours. The evaporation of a water droplet immersed in poly-dimethylsiloxane is observed, and its interfacial tension evolution over time is measured. Deformation of the interface is also observed. These capabilities, and preliminary results for the interface between two immiscible liquids, pave the way for interface manipulation and study of complex fluid-fluid interfaces.

Biofilm Growth under Elastic Confinement

Bacteria often form surface-bound communities, embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix, called biofilms. Quantitative studies of bioflim growth have typically focused on unconfined expansion above solid or semisolid surfaces, leading to exponential radial growth. This geometry does not accurately reflect the natural or biomedical contexts in which biofilms grow in confined spaces. Here, we consider one of the simplest confined geometries: a biofilm growing laterally in the space between a solid surface and an overlying elastic sheet. A poroelastic framework is utilized to derive the radial growth rate of the biofilm; it reveals an additional self-similar expansion regime, governed by the Poisson's ratio of the matrix, leading to a finite maximum radius, consistent with our experimental observations of growing Bacillus subtilis biofilms confined by polydimethylsiloxane.

Synchronized oscillations in swarms of nematode Turbatrix aceti

There is a recent surge of interest in the behavior of active particles that can at the same time align their direction of movement and synchronize their oscillations, known as swarmalators. While theoretical and numerical models of such systems are now abundant, no real-life examples have been shown to date. We present an experimental investigation of the collective motion of the nematode Turbatrix aceti that self-propel by body undulation. We discover that these nematodes can synchronize their body oscillations, forming striking traveling metachronal waves, which produces strong fluid flows. We uncover that the location and strength of this collective state can be controlled through the shape of the confining structure; in our case the contact angle of a droplet. This opens a way for producing controlled work such as on-demand flows or displacement of objects. We illustrate this by showing that the force generated by this state is sufficient to change the physics of evaporation of fluid droplets, by counteracting the surface-tension force, which allow us to estimate its strength. The relatively large size and ease of culture make Turbatrix aceti a promising model organism for experimental investigation of swarming and oscillating active matter capable of producing controllable work.

The role of ultrafast structural dynamics with physical and chemical changes in polydimethylsiloxane thin films by two-dimensional IR spectroscopy

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and two-dimensional IR (2D-IR) spectroscopies were applied to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) cross-linked elastomer films. The vibrational probe for the systems studied was a silicon hydride mode that was covalently bound to the polymer chains. The structure and dynamics reported by this mode were measured in response to a wide range of chemical and physical perturbations, including elevated curing temperature, increased curing agent concentration, mechanical compression, and cooling to near the glass transition temperature. The FTIR spectra were found to be relatively insensitive to all of these perturbations, and 2D-IR spectroscopy revealed that this was due to the overwhelming influence of heterogeneity on the spectral line shape. Surprisingly, the deconvoluted spectral line shapes showed that there were only slight differences in the heterogeneous and homogeneous dynamics even with the drastic macroscopic changes occurring in different systems. In the context of modeling polymer behavior, the results confirm that dynamics on the ultrafast time scale need not be included to properly model PDMS elasticity.

Precision ejection of microfluidic droplets into air with a superhydrophobic outlet

Dispensing micron-scale droplets from a suspended nozzle is important for applications in bioprinting, analytical chemistry, and pharmaceutical formulation. Here, we describe a general approach to eject droplets from microfluidic devices using superhydrophobic patterning; this facilitates release of wetted fluids, allowing droplets to break contact with channel surfaces and travel along regular paths to achieve a printing accuracy of ∼3 μm. We demonstrate the utility of the approach by using it to print droplets of varied composition from a microfluidic mixing device. Our approach is compatible with common fabrication techniques making it applicable to devices configured for diverse applications.

The growth and shrinkage of water droplets at the oil-solid interface

HYPOTHESIS

The mechanism for the spontaneous formation of water droplets at oil/solid interfaces immersed in water is currently unclear. We hypothesize that growth and shrinkage of droplets are kinetically controlled by diffusion of water through the oil, driven by differences in chemical potential between the solid substrate and the aqueous reservoir.

EXPERIMENTS

The formation, growth and shrinkage of water droplets at an immersed oil/solid interface are investigated theoretically and experimentally with three silicone oils. The surface is hydrophobic and the droplets formed are truncated spheres with radius, a, less than 10 μm. The expansion and contraction of the droplets can be controlled by adjusting the difference in chemical potential. The growth kinetics are modelled in terms of water migration through the oil layer which predicts a²∝t.

FINDINGS

This is the first study of possible mechanisms for the formation of such interfacial droplets. Several possible causes are shown to be unfavourable, negligible, or are eliminated by careful experiments controlling key parameters (such as oil viscosity, substrate chemistry). The rate constant for mass transport is proportional to difference in chemical potential and an estimate shows dissociation of surface groups on the substrate provides a driving chemical potential of the right magnitude.

Silicone Surface Fundamentals

Many of the applications of the most familiar silicone polymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), are a consequence of its hydrophobic nature. The key quantities underlying this behavior are the water contact angle with water droplets, the surface tension of the polymer, and its interfacial tension with water. These quantities are reviewed for PDMS and the fluorsilicone polymethyltrifluoropropylsiloxane (PMTFPS) as well as some other less common, more highly fluorinated, fluorosilicones. As aliphatic fluorocarbons are usually introduced into polymers to lower surface tension, it is unexpected that the surface tension of PMTFPS is higher than PDMS. However, this observation is consistent with Zisman's early extensive studies. It is also somewhat surprising that there are no definitive values accepted for the water contact angle with PDMS and the interfacial tension at the PDMS/water interface. Some reasons for this are explored and relevant limitations considered. The variety of ways in which a PDMS surface can be presented must have a major effect on the range of water contact angles reported.

Printing of Hydrophobic Materials in Fumed Silica Nanoparticle Suspension

Freeform three-dimensional (3D) printing of functional structures from liquid hydrophobic build materials is of great significance and widely used in various fields such as soft robotics and microfluidics. In particular, a yield-stress support bath-enabled 3D-printing methodology has been emerging to fabricate complex 3D structures. Unfortunately, the reported support bath materials are either hydrophobic or not versatile enough for the printing of a wide range of hydrophobic materials. The objective of this study is to propose a fumed silica nanoparticle-based yield-stress suspension as a hydrophobic support bath to enable 3D extrusion printing of various hydrophobic ink materials in a printing-then-solidification fashion. Hydrophobic ink is freeform-deposited in a hydrophobic fumed silica-mineral oil suspension and maintains its shape during printing; it is not cured until the whole structure is complete. Various hydrophobic inks including poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), SU-8 resin, and epoxy-based conductive ink are printed into complex 3D structures in the fumed silica-mineral oil bath and then cured using relevant cross-linking mechanisms, even at a temperature as high as 90 °C, to prove the feasibility and versatility of the proposed printing approach. In addition, the deposited feature can easily reach a much better resolution such as 30 μm for PDMS filaments due to the negligible interfacial tension effect.

Combat biofouling with microscopic ridge-like surface morphology: a bioinspired study

Biofouling refers to the unfavourable attachment and accumulation of marine sessile organisms (e.g. barnacles, mussels and tubeworms) on the solid surfaces immerged in ocean. The enormous economic loss caused by biofouling in combination with the severe environmental impacts induced by the current antifouling approaches entails the development of novel antifouling strategies with least environmental impact. Inspired by the superior antifouling performance of the leaves of mangrove tree Sonneratia apetala, here we propose to combat biofouling by using a surface with microscopic ridge-like morphology. Settlement tests with tubeworm larvae on polymeric replicas of S. apetala leaves confirm that the microscopic ridge-like surface morphology can effectively prevent biofouling. A contact mechanics-based model is then established to quantify the dependence of tubeworm settlement on the structural features of the microscopic ridge-like morphology, giving rise to theoretical guidelines to optimize the morphology for better antifouling performance. Under the direction of the obtained guidelines, a synthetic surface with microscopic ridge-like morphology is developed, exhibiting antifouling performance comparable to that of the S. apetala replica. Our results not only reveal the underlying mechanism accounting for the superior antifouling property of the S. apetala leaves, but also provide applicable guidance for the development of synthetic antifouling surfaces.

Graphene as Barrier to Prevent Volume Increment of Air Bubbles over Silicone Polymer in Aqueous Environment

The interaction of air bubbles with surfaces immersed in water is of fundamental importance in many fields of application ranging from energy to biology. However, many aspects of this topic such as the stability of surfaces in contact with bubbles remain unexplored. For this reason, in this work, we investigate the interaction of air bubbles with different kinds of dispersive surfaces immersed in water. The surfaces studied were polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), graphite, and single layer graphene/PDMS composite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis allows determining the elemental surface composition, while Raman spectroscopy was used to assess the effectiveness of graphene monolayer transfer on PDMS. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to study the surface modification of samples immersed in water. The surface wettability has been investigated by contact angle measurements, and the stability of the gas bubbles was determined by captive contact angle (CCA) measurements. CCA measurements show that the air bubble on graphite surface exhibits a stable behavior while, surprisingly, the volume of the air bubble on PDMS increases as a function of immersion time (bubble dynamic evolution). Indeed, the air bubble volume on the PDMS rises by increasing immersion time in water. The experimental results indicate that the dynamic evolution of air bubble in contact with PDMS is related to the rearrangement of surface polymer chains via the migration of the polar groups. On the contrary, when a graphene monolayer is present on PDMS, it acts as an absolute barrier suppressing the dynamic evolution of the bubble and preserving the optical transparency of PDMS.

Distinguishing Nanobubbles from Nanodroplets with AFM: The Influence of Vertical and Lateral Imaging Forces

The widespread application of surface-attached nanobubbles and nanodroplets in biomedical engineering and nanotechnology is limited by numerous experimental challenges, in particular, the possibility of contamination in nucleation experiments. These challenges are complicated by recent reports that it can be difficult to distinguish between nanoscale drops and bubbles. Here we identify clear differences in the mechanical responses of nanobubbles and nanodroplets under various modes of AFM imaging that subject the objects to predominantly vertical or lateral forces. This allows us to distinguish among nanodroplets, nanobubbles, and oil-covered nanobubbles in water.

Smoothing of contact lines in spreading droplets by trisiloxane surfactants and its relevance for superspreading

Superspreading, the greatly enhanced spreading of aqueous solutions of trisiloxane surfactants on hydrophobic substrates, is of great interest in fundamental physics and technical applications. Despite numerous studies in the last 20 years, the superspreading mechanism is still not well understood, largely because the molecular scale cannot be resolved appropriately either experimentally or using continuum simulations. The absence of molecular-scale knowledge has led to a series of conflicting hypotheses based on different assumptions of surfactant behavior. We report a series of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous solutions of superspreading and non-superspreading surfactants on different substrates. We find that the transition from the liquid-vapor to the solid-liquid interface is smooth for superspreading conditions, allowing direct adsorption through the contact line. This finding complements a study [Karapetsas et al., J. Fluid Mech., 2011, 670, 5-37], which predicts that superspreading can occur if this adsorption path is possible. Based on the observed mechanism, we provide plausible explanations for the influence of the substrate hydrophobicity, the surfactant chain length, and the surfactant concentration on the superspreading phenomenon. We also briefly address that the observed droplet shape is a mechanism to overcome the Huh-Scriven paradox of infinite viscous dissipation at the contact line.

Atomistic potentials for trisiloxane, alkyl ethoxylate, and perfluoroalkane-based surfactants with TIP4P/2005 and application to simulations at the air-water interface

The mechanism of superspreading, the greatly enhanced spreading of water droplets facilitated by trisiloxane surfactants, is still under debate, largely because the role and behavior of the surfactants cannot be sufficiently resolved by experiments or continuum simulations. Previous molecular dynamics studies have been performed with simple model molecules or inaccurate models, strongly limiting their explanatory power. Here we present a force field dedicated to superspreading, extending existing quantum-chemistry-based models for the surfactant and the TIP4P/2005 water model ( Abascal et al. J. Chem. Phys. , 2005 , 123 , 234505 ). We apply the model to superspreading trisiloxane surfactants and nonsuperspreading alkyl ethoxylate and perfluoroalkane surfactants at various concentrations at the air-water interface. We show that the developed model accurately predicts surface tensions, which are typically assumed important for superspreading. Significant differences between superspreading and traditional surfactants are presented and their possible relation to superspreading discussed. Although the force field has been developed for superspreading problems, it should also perform well for other simulations involving polymers or copolymers with water.

Understanding the self-healing hydrophobic recovery of high-voltage insulators

Amorphous siloxane polymers are designed to have high dielectric strength for use as high-voltage insulation materials. Surface hydrophobicity is essential and can be impaired by environmental, electrical, or mechanical factors, leading to leakage currents due to dielectric breakdown. Self-recovery is possible and is generally observed over a period of several hours. Using large-scale, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, the surface wetting of water droplets on the polymer surface is simulated for various surface conditions, including oxidation and coating with small molecules, to understand the driving forces of the recovery process at the atomistic level, which is of primary importance for the developments of novel materials. In this work, we shed light onto the self-recovery mechanism and propose the use of low-molecular-weight (LMW) siloxane to accelerate the recovery of hydrophobicity.

Femtosecond laser micromachining of fused silica molds

The use of low-energy femtosecond laser beam combined with chemical etching has been proven to be an efficient method to fabricate three-dimensional structures in fused silica. For high-volume application, this technology--like other serial processes--suffers from a moderate production rate. Here, we show that femtosecond laser can also be employed to fabricate silica molds and other patterned surfaces, including surfaces with high aspect ratio features (> 10). Through appropriate tailoring of silica's surface property and subsequent creation of, for instance, simple elastomeric molding, new opportunities for the indirect 3D, multi-scale spatial characterization of deep laser-fabricated microstructures come along. We demonstrate that those moldings are characterized by a high fidelity (down to the nanometer scale) to the silica mold. These results further advance the applicability of femtosecond laser processing to glass.
