Novel Polymer Electrolytes Based on Amorphous Poly(ether−ester)s Containing 1,4,7-Trioxanonyl Main Chain Units. Ionic Conductivity versus Polymer Chain Mobility

Energy Storage Behavior of Lithium-Ion Conducting poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA): Chitosan(CS)-Based Polymer Blend Electrolyte Membranes: Preparation, Equivalent Circuit Modeling, Ion Transport Parameters, and Dielectric Properties

Plasticized lithium-ion-based-conducting polymer blend electrolytes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA):chitosan (CS) polymer was prepared using a solution cast technique. The conductivity of the polymer electrolyte system was found to be 8.457 × 10-4 S/cm, a critical factor for electrochemical device applications. It is indicated that the number density (n), diffusion coefficient (D), and mobility (μ) of ions are increased with the concentration of glycerol. High values of dielectric constant and dielectric loss were observed at low frequency region. A correlation was found between the dielectric constant and DC conductivity. The achieved transference number of ions (tion) and electrons (te) for the highest conducting plasticized sample were determined to be 0.989 and 0.011, respectively. The electrochemical stability for the highest conducting sample was 1.94 V, indicated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) response displayed no redox reaction peaks through its entire potential range. Through the constructing electric double-layer capacitor, the energy storage capacity of the highest conducting sample was investigated. All decisive parameters of the EDLC were determined. At the first cycle, the specific capacitance, internal resistance, energy density, and power density were found to be 130 F/g, 80 Ω, 14.5 Wh/kg, and 1100 W/kg, respectively.

Investigations on the Mechanisms of Ionic Conductivity in PEO−PU/PAN Semi-interpenetrating Polymer Network−Salt Complex Polymer Electrolytes: An Impedance Spectroscopy Study

This paper is a first comprehensive study on the correlated ion transport mechanisms contributing to the overall conductivity behavior in a new class of poly(ethylene oxide)-polyurethane/polyacrylonitrile (PEO-PU/PAN) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs)-salt complex polymer electrolytes. A simultaneous investigation of the electrical response on PEO-PU/PAN/LiClO(4) and PEO-PU/PAN/LiCF(3)SO(3) semi-IPNs with varying EO/Li mole ratios (100, 60, 30, 20, 15, 10) has been carried out by impedance spectroscopy. Analysis of the complex plane and spectroscopic plots indicated the presence of two microscopic phases corresponding to the PEO-PU and PAN domains, which leads to space charge polarization in these systems. A suitably modified approach based on the universal power law (UPL) considering the independent contribution from the individual microphases of semi-IPNs facilitates a complete interpretation of the spectroscopic profiles for the real component of conductivity (sigma'(omega)). The sigma'(omega) spectroscopic profiles were fitted with two power law equations, where the frequency region up to approximately 300 kHz is the conductivity profile associated with the PAN phase and beyond this is the superimposed contribution of the PEO-PU phase. Simulated fits using the UPL equation revealed two relaxation times (tau(PEO)(-)(PU), tau(PAN)) related to ionic hopping in the PEO-PU and PAN phases in addition to the conductivity relaxation time (tau(peak)) determined from the Debye peaks. The respective power law exponents (n(PEO)(-)(PU) approximately 0.5-0.8, n(PAN) approximately 1.0-1.6) indicate that though cationic hopping in the softer PEO-PU phase is favored, anionic hopping in the PAN phase contributes significantly to the charge transport processes in these semi-IPNs. Correlation of the experimental results with the simulated fits enable us to distinguish the effects of semi-IPN composition, temperature, morphology, ion-ion, and ion-polymer interactions, which influence the microscopic molecular events, involved in the charge transport in these complex semi-IPN polymer electrolytes.

Dielectric relaxations in ultrathin isotactic PMMA films and PS-PMMA-PS trilayer films

The local and cooperative dynamics of supported ultrathin films ( L = 6.4 - 120 nm) of isotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (i-PMMA, Mn = 118 x 10(3) g/mol) was studied using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy for a wide range of frequencies (0.1 Hz to 10(6) Hz) and temperatures (250 - 423 K). To assess the influence of the PMMA film surfaces on the glass transition dynamics, two different sample geometries were employed: a single layer PMMA film with the film surfaces in direct contact with aluminum films which act as attractive, hard boundaries; and a stacked polystyrene-PMMA-polystyrene trilayer film which contains diffuse PMMA-PS interfaces. For single layer films of i-PMMA, a decrease of the glass transition temperature T(g) by up to 10 K was observed for a film thickness L < 25 nm (comparable to R(EE)), indicated by a decrease of the peak temperature T(alpha) in the loss epsilon(")(T) at low and high frequencies and by a decrease in the temperature corresponding to the maximum in the apparent activation energy E(a)(T) of the alpha-process. In contrast, measurements of i-PMMA sandwiched between PS-layers revealed a slight (up to 5 K) increase in T(g) for PMMA film thickness values less than 30 nm. The slowing down of the glass transition dynamics for the thinnest PMMA films is consistent with an increased contribution from the less mobile PMMA-PS interdiffusion regions.
