Optical properties of (SrMnO₃)n/(LaMnO₃)₂n superlattices: an insulator-to-metal transition observed in the absence of disorder

(LaCrO3) m /SrCrO3 superlattices as transparent p-type semiconductors with finite magnetization

The electronic and magnetic properties of (LaCrO₃) _m /SrCrO₃ superlattices are investigated using first principles calculations. We show that the magnetic moments in the two CrO₂ layers sandwiching the SrO layer compensate each other for even m but give rise to a finite magnetization for odd m, which is explained by charge ordering with Cr³⁺ and Cr⁴⁺ ions arranged in a checkerboard pattern. The Cr⁴⁺ ions induce in-gap hole states at the interface, implying that the transparent superlattices are p-type semiconductors. The availability of transparent p-type semiconductors with finite magnetization enables the fabrication of transparent magnetic diodes and transistors, for example, with a multitude of potential technological applications.

Comparing Thickness and Doping-Induced Effects on the Normal States of Infinite-Layer Electron-Doped Cuprates: Is There Anything to Learn?

We grew Sr_1-xLa_xCuO₂ thin films and SrCuO₂/Sr_0.9La_0.1CuO₂/SrCuO₂ trilayers by reflection high-energy diffraction-calibrated layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy, to study their electrical transport properties as a function of the doping and thickness of the central Sr_0.9La_0.1CuO₂ layer. For the trilayer samples, as already observed in underdoped SLCO films, the electrical resistivity versus temperature curves as a function of the central layer thickness show, for thicknesses thinner than 20 unit cells, sudden upturns in the low temperature range with the possibility for identifying, in the normal state, the T* and a T** temperatures, respectively, separating high-temperature linear behavior and low-temperature quadratic dependence. By plotting the T* and T** values as a function of T_C^onset for both the thin films and the trilayers, the data fall on the same curves. This result suggests that, for the investigated trilayers, the superconducting critical temperature is the important parameter able to describe the normal state properties and that, in the limit of very thin central layers, such properties are mainly influenced by the modification of the energy band structure and not by interface-related disorder.

Spectroscopic Evidence of a Dimensionality-Induced Metal-to-Insulator Transition in the Ruddlesden-Popper Lan+1NinO3n+1 Series

Perovskite-based heterostructures have recently gained remarkable interest, thanks to atomic-scale precision engineering. These systems are very susceptible to small variations of control parameters, such as two-dimensionality, strain, lattice polarizability, and doping. Focusing on the rare-earth nickelate diagram, LaNiO₃ (LNO) catches the eye, being the only nickelate that does not undergo a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). Therefore, the ground state of LNO has been studied in several theoretical and experimental papers. Here, we show by means of infrared spectroscopy that an MIT can be driven by dimensionality control in ultrathin LNO films when the number of unit cells drops to 2. Such a dimensionality tuning can eventually be tailored when a physically implemented monolayer in the ultrathin films is replaced by a digital single layer embedded in the Ruddlesden-Popper La_n+1Ni_nO_3n+1 series. We provide spectroscopic evidence that the dimensionality-induced MIT in Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates strongly resembles that of ultrathin LNO films. Our results can pave the way to the employment of Ruddlesden-Popper La_n+1Ni_nO_3n+1 to tune the electronic properties of LNO through dimensional transition without the need of physically changing the number of unit cells in thin films.

Nanoscale magnetic and charge anisotropies at manganite interfaces

Strong correlated manganites are still under intense research owing to their complex phase diagrams in terms of Sr-doping and their sensitivity to intrinsic and extrinsic structural deformations. Here, we performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements of manganite bilayers to explore the effects that a local Sr-doping gradient produce on the charge and antiferromagnetic anisotropies. In order to gradually tune the Sr-doping level along the axis perpendicular to the samples we have grown a series of bilayers with different thicknesses of low-doped manganites (from 0 nm to 6 nm) deposited over a La_0.7Sr_0.3MnO₃ metallic layer. This strategy permitted us to resolve with high accuracy the thickness region where the charge and spin anisotropies vary and the critical thickness t_c over which the out of plane orbital asymmetry does not have any further modifications. We found that the antiferromagnetic spin axis points preferentially out of the sample plane regardless the capping layer thickness. However, it tilts partially into the sample plane far from this critical thickness, owing to the combined contributions of the external structural strain and electron doping. Furthermore, we found that the doping level of the capping layer strongly affects the critical thickness, giving clear evidence of the influence exerted by the electron doping on the orbital and magnetic configurations. These anisotropic changes induce subtle modifications on the domain reorientation of La_0.7Sr_0.3MnO₃, as evidenced from the magnetic hysteresis cycles.

Nanoscale variation of antiferromagnetic and charge anisotropies has been found at manganite interfaces with an artificially created Sr-doping.

Modulation of Manganite Nanofilm Properties Mediated by Strong Influence of Strontium Titanate Excitons

Hole-doped perovskite manganites have attracted much attention because of their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties induced by the interplay between spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, a comprehensive investigation of the optical, electronic, and magnetic properties of La_0.7Sr_0.3MnO₃ thin films on SrTiO₃ (LSMO/STO) and other substrates is conducted using a combination of temperature-dependent transport, spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A significant difference in the optical property of LSMO/STO that occurs even in thick (87.2 nm) LSMO/STO from that of LSMO on other substrates is discovered. Several excitonic features are observed in thin film nanostructure LSMO/STO at ∼4 eV, which could be attributed to the formation of anomalous charged excitonic complexes. On the basis of the spectral weight transfer analysis, anomalous excitonic effects from STO strengthen the electronic correlation in LSMO films. This results in the occurrence of optical spectral changes related to the intrinsic Mott-Hubbard properties in manganites. We find that while lattice strain from the substrate influences the optical properties of the LSMO thin films, the coexistence of strong electron-electron (e-e) and electron-hole (e-h) interactions which leads to the resonant excitonic effects from the substrate plays a much more significant role. Our result shows that the onset of anomalous excitonic dynamics in manganite oxides may potentially generate new approaches in manipulating exciton-based optoelectronic applications.

Orbital dependent coherence temperature and optical anisotropy of V2O3 quasiparticles

We report on an orbital and temperature dependent study of the onset of coherent quasiparticles in V₂O₃ single crystal. By using polarized infrared spectroscopy we demonstrate that the electronic coherence temperature is strongly orbital dependent, being about 400 K for [Formula: see text] orbitals and 500 K for the [Formula: see text]. This suggests that V₂O₃ low energy electrodynamics can be described in terms of two electron liquids differently renormalized by electronic correlations.

Spectral Weight Redistribution in (LaNiO3)n/(LaMnO3)2 Superlattices from Optical Spectroscopy

We have studied the optical properties of four (LaNiO3)n/(LaMnO3)2 superlattices (SL) (n=2,3,4,5) on SrTiO3 substrates. We have measured the reflectivity at temperatures from 20 to 400 K, and extracted the optical conductivity through a fitting procedure based on a Kramers-Kronig consistent Lorentz-Drude model. With increasing LaNiO3 thickness, the SLs undergo an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) that is accompanied by the transfer of spectral weight from high to low frequency. The presence of a broad midinfrared band, however, shows that the optical conductivity of the (LaNiO3)n/(LaMnO3)2 SLs is not a linear combination of the LaMnO_{3} and LaNiO3 conductivities. Our observations suggest that interfacial charge transfer leads to an IMT due to a change in valence at the Mn and Ni sites.

Artificial construction of the layered Ruddlesden-Popper manganite La2Sr2Mn3O10 by reflection high energy electron diffraction monitored pulsed laser deposition

Pulsed laser deposition has been used to artificially construct the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper structure La(2)Sr(2)Mn(3)O(10) in epitaxial thin film form by sequentially layering La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) and SrO unit cells aided by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction monitoring. The interval deposition technique was used to promote two-dimensional SrO growth. X-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated that the trilayer structure had been formed. A site ordering was found to differ from that expected thermodynamically, with the smaller Sr(2+) predominantly on the R site due to kinetic trapping of the deposited cation sequence. A dependence of the out-of-plane lattice parameter on growth pressure was interpreted as changing the oxygen content of the films. Magnetic and transport measurements on fully oxygenated films indicated a frustrated magnetic ground state characterized as a spin glass-like magnetic phase with the glass temperature T(g) ≈ 34 K. The magnetic frustration has a clear in-plane (ab) magnetic anisotropy, which is maintained up to temperatures of 150 K. Density functional theory calculations suggest competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic long-range orders, which are proposed as the origin of the low-temperature glassy state.
