Controlling microstructure of pentacene derivatives by solution processing: impact of structural anisotropy on optoelectronic properties

Unveiling Charge-Transfer Dynamics at Singlet Fission Layer/Hybrid Perovskite Interface

Singlet fission (SF) materials have been applied in various types of solar cells to pursue higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) beyond the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit. SF implementation in perovskite solar cells has not been successfully realized yet due to the insufficient understanding of the SF/perovskite heterojunctions. In this work, we attempt to elucidate the charge dynamics of an SF/perovskite system by incorporating a well-known SF molecule, TIPS-pentacene, and a triple-cation perovskite Cs0.05(FA0.85MA0.15)0.95PbI2.55Br0.45, owing to their well-matched energy structures. The transient absorption spectra and kinetic fitting plots suggest an electron-transfer process from the triplet state of TIPS-pentacene to perovskite in the picosecond regime, which increases the carrier density by 20% in the perovskite layer. This work confirms the existence of an electron-transfer process between the SF material and perovskite, providing a pathway to SF-enhanced perovskite solar cells.

Tuning the transport properties of tetracene-based single-molecule junctions with chemical or structural variation of side and anchoring groups

CONTEXT

This study aims to tune the transport properties of tetracene single-molecule junctions with the proper choice and placement of side and anchoring groups. For the operationalization of the molecule that was anchored with thiol or isocyanide groups, two different side groups, amine and nitro, in two different positions, were taken into consideration. For unperturbed tetracene molecule, a prominent negative differential resistance (NDR) feature at 1.8 V was observed with the isocyanide anchoring group while the thiol anchoring group exhibits a plateau region over a bias voltage of 2.2 to 3.2 V. At a bias voltage that is dependent on the chemical or structural change of side or anchoring groups, NDR feature of varying degree was seen in all configurations. Results show that the current flowing through the thiol-anchored molecule perturbed with the amine group at S' position is relatively larger than other configurations because of the smaller HOMO-LUMO gap and broader transmission peaks resulting in a peak to valley current ratio (PVCR) of 1.22. In addition, multiple NDR regions were realized in nitro-perturbed isocyanide-anchored molecule at S position. These results suggest their promising applications in switches, logic cells, and storage devices.

METHODS

The modeling and simulation of side-group mediated anchored tetracene molecule through two electrodic systems were studied using density functional theory (DFT) combined with non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) in Virtual NanoLab-AtomistixToolkit (ATK). The electron transport properties were calculated using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA) exchange-correlation function. To optimize computing time, gold electrodes were single zeta polarized whereas the molecule, anchor groups, and side groups were double zeta polarized.

Meniscus-Guided Deposition of Organic Semiconductor Thin Films: Materials, Mechanism, and Application in Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Solution-processable organic semiconductors are one of the promising materials for the next generation of organic electronic products, which call for high-performance materials and mature processing technologies. Among many solution processing methods, meniscus-guided coating (MGC) techniques have the advantages of large-area, low-cost, adjustable film aggregation, and good compatibility with the roll-to-roll process, showing good research results in the preparation of high-performance organic field-effect transistors. In this review, the types of MGC techniques are first listed and the relevant mechanisms (wetting mechanism, fluid mechanism, and deposition mechanism) are introduced. The MGC processes are focused and the effect of the key coating parameters on the thin film morphology and performance with examples is illustrated. Then, the performance of transistors based on small molecule semiconductors and polymer semiconductor thin films prepared by various MGC techniques is summarized. In the third section, various recent thin film morphology control strategies combined with the MGCs are introduced. Finally, the advanced progress of large-area transistor arrays and the challenges for roll-to-roll processes are presented using MGCs. Nowadays, the application of MGCs is still in the exploration stage, its mechanism is still unclear, and the precise control of film deposition still needs experience accumulation.

Flexible organic field-effect transistors-based biosensors: progress and perspectives

Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have been proposed beyond three decades while becoming a research hotspot again in recent years because of the fast development of flexible electronics. Many novel flexible OFETs-based devices have been reported in these years. Among these devices, flexible OFETs-based sensors made great strides because of the extraordinary sensing capability of FET. Most of these flexible OFETs-based sensors were designed for biological applications due to the advantages of flexibility, reduced complexity, and lightweight. This paper reviews the materials, fabrications, and applications of flexible OFETs-based biosensors. Besides, the challenges and opportunities of the flexible OFETs-based biosensors are also discussed.

Engineered molecular stacking crystallinity of bar-coated TIPS-pentacene/polystyrene films for organic thin-film transistors

Solution-based blended polymer materials are promising for electronic applications in many fields. However, determining a controllable method to achieve electronically active organic films through the practical liquid deposition process is very challenging. In this study, we suggest employing hybrid binary organic mixture inks (an insulating polymer polystyrene (PS)) and an organic semiconductor (6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethnyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene)) to manage and enhance the characteristics of TIPS-pentacene organic layers using a bar-coating method. Binary mixtures with PS molecules can provide various microstructures, crystal orientations, and molecular stacking of the active TIPS-pentacene organic layers under the proper fabrication parameters during bar-coating. Varying the molecular weight of the PS mixture, weight percentage of the TIPS-pentacene, and deposition parameters, such as the bar-coating speed, direction, and contact angles between the crystal orientation of TIPS-pentacene and Au electrodes, is crucial to guarantee high-electronic properties. The electrodes with TIPS-pentacene/PS (MW = 4000) binary films at a 40 wt% TIPS-pentacene ratio demonstrate the outstanding room-temperature field-effect mobility of 1.215 cm2 V-1 s-1, four times higher than that of pure TIPS-pentacene transistors (100 wt%). The performance improvement of the TIPS-pentacene layers is highly attributed to the ideal spherulite structure and thick molecular stacking properties, which can guarantee favorable charge transport paths through organic films. These findings demonstrate a promising strategy for blending organic applications to improve the performance of organic electronic devices using practical fabrication processes.

The Role of Crystal Packing on the Optical Response of Trialkyltetrelethynyl Acenes

The electronic and optical responses of an organic semiconductor (OSC) are dictated by the chemistries of the molecular or polymer building blocks and how these chromophores pack in the solid state. Understanding the physicochemical natures of these responses are not only critical for determining OSC performance for a particular application, but the UV/visible optical response may also be of potential use to determine aspects of the molecular-scale solid-state packing for crystal polymorphs or thin-film morphologies that are difficult to determine otherwise. To probe these relationships, we report the quantum-chemical investigation of a series of trialkyltetrelethynyl acenes (tetrel = silicon or germanium) that adopt the brickwork (BW), slip-stack (SS), or herringbone (HB) packing configurations; the π-conjugated backbones considered here are pentacene (PEN) and anthradithiophene (ADT). For comparison, HB-packed (unsubstituted) pentacene is also included. Density functional theory (DFT) and G0W0 (single-shot GW) electronic band structures, G0W0-BSE (Bethe-Salpeter Equation)-derived optical spectra, polarized ϵ2 spectra, and distributions of both singlet and triplet exciton wave functions are reported. Configurational disorder is also considered. Further, we evaluate the probability of singlet fission in these materials through energy conservation relationships.

Singlet fission dynamics and optical spectra of pentacene and its derivatives

A multimode Brownian oscillator model is employed to investigate the absorption spectra of pentacene and its derivatives in solution and thin films. Excellent agreement has been obtained between simulated and measured absorption spectra. Furthermore, using parameters obtained from fitting the absorption spectra of these pentacene derivatives, the singlet fission dynamics and two-dimensional electronic spectra of an ab initio Hamiltonian are investigated by Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation with multiple Davydov trial states. It is found that the periodic wave packet motion induced in the displaced excited state, and the accompanying vibrational relaxation, can be visualized by two-dimensional electronic spectra at short times.

High length-to-width aspect ratio lead bromide microwires via perovskite-induced local concentration gradient for X-ray detection

Well-oriented PbBr₂ microwires with a length-to-width ratio of up to 5000 were grown using a concentration gradient in co-crystallization with perovskite. Planar-integrated microwires showed a response to X-ray photons.

Molecular packing-dependent exciton dynamics in functionalized anthradithiophene derivatives: From solutions to crystals

Understanding the impact of inter-molecular orientation on the optical properties of organic semiconductors is important for designing next-generation organic (opto)electronic and photonic devices. However, fundamental aspects of how various features of molecular packing in crystalline systems determine the nature and dynamics of excitons have been a subject of debate. Toward this end, we present a systematic study of how various molecular crystal packing motifs affect the optical properties of a class of high-performance organic semiconductors: functionalized derivatives of fluorinated anthradithiophene. The absorptive and emissive species present in three such derivatives (exhibiting "brickwork," "twisted-columnar," and "sandwich-herringbone" motifs, controlled by the side group R) were analyzed both in solution and in single crystals, using various modalities of optical and photoluminescence spectroscopy, revealing the nature of these excited states. In solution, in the emission band, two states were identified: a Franck-Condon state present at all concentrations and an excimer that emerged at higher concentrations. In single crystal systems, together with ab initio calculations, it was found in the absorptive band that Frenkel and Charge Transfer (CT) excitons mixed due to nonvanishing CT integrals in all derivatives, but the amount of admixture and exciton delocalization depended on the packing, with the "sandwich-herringbone" packing motif least conducive to delocalization. Three emissive species in the crystal phase were also identified: Frenkel excitons, entangled triplet pairs ¹(TT) (which are precursors to forming free triplet states via singlet fission), and self-trapped excitons (STEs, similar in origin to excimers present in concentrated solution). The "twisted-columnar" packing motif was most conducive to the formation of Frenkel excitons delocalized over 4-7 molecules depending on the temperature. These delocalized Frenkel states were dominant across the full temperature range (78 K-293 K), though at lower temperatures, the entangled triplet states and STEs were present. In the derivative with the "brickwork" packing, all three emissive species were observed across the full temperature range and, most notably, the ¹(TT) state was present at room temperature. Finally, the derivative with the "sandwich-herringbone" packing exhibited localized Frenkel excitons and had a strong propensity for self-trapped exciton formation even at higher temperatures. In this derivative, no formation of the ¹(TT) state was observed. The temperature-dependent dynamics of these emissive states are reported, as well as their origin in fundamental inter-molecular interactions.

Crystal Orientation Imaging of Organic Monolayer Islands by Polarized Light Microscopy

The initial stage of organic semiconductor film formation greatly affects the properties of films, which are used in organic devices including thin-film transistors and light-emitting diodes. Organic monolayer islands that are formed on a suitable substrate can be observed with a conventional optical microscope. Furthermore, the use of a polarized microscope allows the determination of the refractive index and crystal orientation of islands. Here, we report organic monolayer islands of 2,9-diphenyl-dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DPh-DNTT) deposited on a Si substrate with thermally grown SiO₂ to investigate the crystal orientation of islands by polarized light microscopy. The observation of DPh-DNTT islands under polarized quasi-monochromatic light reveals that reflection intensity depends on both the crystal orientation and irradiation wavelength. A comparison between experimental and calculated reflection intensities provides an estimate of an anisotropic complex refractive index in the plane. The crossed-polarized microscopy image of a SiO₂/Si substrate with DPh-DNTT islands shows that the contrast between the islands and SiO₂ surface is sensitive to the angle between the polarizer and analyzer and depends on the direction of crystal orientation. The dependence of reflection contrast, which can be explained by the anisotropic extinction coefficient, is used to confirm crystal orientation.

Ultrafast Electron Transfer Before Singlet Fission and Slow Triplet State Electron Transfer in Pentacene Single Crystal/C60 Heterostructure

The singlet fission (SF) process converts one high-energy singlet exciton to two low-energy triplet excitons after absorbing one photon. Organic photovoltaic devices based on the SF process have shown great potential in solar energy conversion to exceed Shockley-Queisser limit. The key to SF photovoltaic devices requires efficient electron transfer (ET) from triplet exciton after SF, which is yet to be thoroughly investigated. Here, we performed thorough photophysical studies in 6,13-Bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene)/C₆₀ heterostructures using TIPS-pentacene microsize single crystal as a well-defined model system. We show the SF process in TIPS-pentacene single crystal occurs by a two-step process, with triplet pair intermediates forming in 75 fs and then dissociating to non-interacting triplets in 1.6 ps. The SF process in single crystal is comparable to that in polycrystalline film. Importantly, we observe a considerable fraction of singlet excitons is quenched by ultrafast (<75 fs) interfacial ET prior to fission and no ET from triplet excitons in 1.5 ns time window. We confirm that the absence of ET is not limited by exciton diffusion but due to very slow (≫1.5 ns) interfacial ET from triplet exciton. The observations contradict expected singlet and triplet ET behaviors based on a simple two-state Marcus ET model and suggest long-range interfacial ET from delocalized photoexcitation. The ultrafast ET from singlet exciton before SF and slow ET from triplet exciton call for reconsideration and careful design of efficient SF photovoltaic devices.

Programmed Design of Highly Crystalline Organic Semiconductor Patterns with Uniaxial Alignment via Blade Coating for High-Performance Organic Field-Effect Transistors

A solution-printing technique that enables the patterning and aligning of organic semiconducting crystals is necessary for their practical application. Here, we report the facile growth of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-PEN) semiconducting crystal patterns via a novel blade-coating technique. Defining low/high shearing-speed regions alternatively in a programmed manner enables the growth of TIPS-PEN crystals in low-speed regions and their patterning in high-speed regions. Various crystal-analysis tools, including polarized UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure, reveal that a crystal grown at an optimum shearing speed is highly oriented along the shearing direction with high crystallinity, and its molecules have a more edge-on orientation for efficient lateral-charge transport. As a result, organic field-effect transistors comprised of these crystals show a high field-effect mobility of up to 1.74 cm²/(V s). In addition, various crystal patterns can be created by simply changing the programming parameters, suggesting the broad utility of the crystal patterns and printing technique.

Facile and Microcontrolled Blade Coating of Organic Semiconductor Blends for Uniaxial Crystal Alignment and Reliable Flexible Organic Field-Effect Transistors

The ability to fabricate uniform and high-quality patterns of organic semiconductors using a simple method is necessary to realize high-performance and reliable organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) for practical applications. Here, we report the facile fabrication of chemically patterned substrates in order to provide solvent wetting/dewetting regions and grow patterned crystals during blade coating of a small-molecule semiconductor/insulating polymer blend solution. Polyurethane acrylate is selected as the solvent dewetting material, not only because of its hydrophobicity but also because its patterns are easily produced by selective UV irradiation onto precursor films. 6,13-Bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-PEN) crystal patterns are grown on the line-shaped wetting regions of the patterned film, and the crystallinity of TIPS-PEN and alignment of molecules are found using various crystal analysis tools depending on the pattern widths. The smallest width of 5 μm yielded an OFET showing the highest field-effect mobility value of 1.63 cm²/(V·s), which is much higher than the value of the OFET based on the unpatterned TIPS-PEN crystal. Notably, we demonstrate flexible and low-voltage-operating OFETs for practical use of the patterned crystals, and the OFETs show highly stable operation under sustained gate bias stress thanks to the patterned crystals.

Guided Formation of Large Crystals of Organic and Perovskite Semiconductors by an Ultrasonicated Dispenser and Their Application as the Active Matrix of Photodetectors

The crystallization of organic or perovskite semiconductors reflects the intermolecular interactions and crucially determines the charge transport in opto-electronic devices. In this report, we demonstrate and investigate the use of an ultrasonicated dispenser to guide the formation of crystals of organic and perovskite semiconductors. The moving speed of the dispenser affects the match between the concentration gradient and evaporation rate near the three-phase contact lines and thus the generation of various crystallization morphologies. The mechanism of crystallization is given by a relationship between the calculated concentration gradient profile and the degree of crystal alignment. Highly ordered, aligned crystals are achieved for both organic bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene and perovskite MAPbI₃ semiconductors. Absorption spectra, Raman scattering spectroscopy analysis, and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurement reveal the strong anisotropy of the crystalline structures. The aligned crystals lead to remarkably enhanced electrical performances in an organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) and perovskite photodetector. As a demonstration, we combine the OTFT with photodetectors to achieve an active matrix of normally off, gate-tunable photodetectors that operate under ambient conditions.

Inorganic Polymer Micropillar-Based Solution Shearing of Large-Area Organic Semiconductor Thin Films with Pillar-Size-Dependent Crystal Size

It is demonstrated that the crystal size of small-molecule organic semiconductors can be controlled during solution shearing by tuning the shape and dimensions of the micropillars on the blade. Increasing the size and spacing of the rectangular pillars increases the crystal size, resulting in higher thin-film mobility. This phenomenon is attributed as the microstructure changing the degree and density of the meniscus line curvature, thereby controlling the nucleation process. The use of allylhybridpolycarbosilane (AHPCS), an inorganic polymer, is also demonstrated as the microstructured blade for solution shearing, which has high resistance to organic solvents, can easily be microstructured via molding, and is flexible and durable. Finally, it is shown that solution shearing can be performed on a curved surface using a curved blade. These demonstrations bring solution shearing closer to industrial applications and expand its applicability to various printed flexible electronics.

Raman antenna effect from exciton-phonon coupling in organic semiconducting nanobelts

The highly anisotropic interactions in organic semiconductors together with the soft character of organic materials lead to strong coupling between nuclear vibrations and exciton dynamics, which potentially results in anomalous electrical, optical and optoelectrical properties. Here, we report on the Raman antenna effect from organic semiconducting nanobelts 6,13-dichloropentacene (DCP), resulting from the coupling of molecular excitons and intramolecular phonons. The highly ordered crystalline structure in DCP nanobelts enables the precise polarization-resolved spectroscopic measurement. The angle-dependent Raman spectroscopy under resonant excitation shows that all Raman modes from the skeletal vibrations of DCP molecule act like a nearly perfect dipole antenna I_Raman ∝ cos⁴(θ - 90), with almost zero (maximum) Raman scattering parallel (perpendicular) to the nanobelt's long-axis. The Raman antenna effect in DCP nanobelt is originated from the coupling between molecular skeletal vibrations and intramolecular exciton and the confinement of intermolecular excitons. It dramatically enhances the Raman polarization ratio (ρ = I_‖/I_⊥ > 25) and amplifies the anisotropy of the angle-dependent Raman scattering (κ_Raman = I_max/I_min > 12) of DCP nanobelts. These findings have crucial implications for fundamental understanding on the exciton-phonon coupling and its effects on the optical properties of organic semiconductors.

Spray printing of organic semiconducting single crystals

Single-crystal semiconductors have been at the forefront of scientific interest for more than 70 years, serving as the backbone of electronic devices. Inorganic single crystals are typically grown from a melt using time-consuming and energy-intensive processes. Organic semiconductor single crystals, however, can be grown using solution-based methods at room temperature in air, opening up the possibility of large-scale production of inexpensive electronics targeting applications ranging from field-effect transistors and light-emitting diodes to medical X-ray detectors. Here we demonstrate a low-cost, scalable spray-printing process to fabricate high-quality organic single crystals, based on various semiconducting small molecules on virtually any substrate by combining the advantages of antisolvent crystallization and solution shearing. The crystals' size, shape and orientation are controlled by the sheer force generated by the spray droplets' impact onto the antisolvent's surface. This method demonstrates the feasibility of a spray-on single-crystal organic electronics.

Normal-incidence reflectance difference spectroscopy based on a liquid crystal variable retarder

We propose liquid crystal variable retarder-based reflectance difference spectroscopy for normal-incidence measurements. Principles, instrumentation, data collection and reduction, and calibration procedures are provided. The signal noise is better than 10^-3, and the spectral range is from 1.6 to 2.4 eV with 346 photon energy channels. As a demonstration, reflectance difference signals of a multilayer pentacene film on poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film are presented with different polarization azimuths. The characteristic peaks at 1.8 and 1.97 eV, corresponding to the Davydov splitting of pentacene crystal, are observed, which indicate well-ordered in-plane anisotropic structure of pentacene crystal film on PET. Thanks to normal incidence, this design is immune to adjusting the optical structure for the measurements with different working distances, and the objective lens is easily integrated to realize microarea measurements.

Organic Optoelectronic Materials: Mechanisms and Applications

Organic (opto)electronic materials have received considerable attention due to their applications in thin-film-transistors, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, sensors, photorefractive devices, and many others. The technological promises include low cost of these materials and the possibility of their room-temperature deposition from solution on large-area and/or flexible substrates. The article reviews the current understanding of the physical mechanisms that determine the (opto)electronic properties of high-performance organic materials. The focus of the review is on photoinduced processes and on electronic properties important for optoelectronic applications relying on charge carrier photogeneration. Additionally, it highlights the capabilities of various experimental techniques for characterization of these materials, summarizes top-of-the-line device performance, and outlines recent trends in the further development of the field. The properties of materials based both on small molecules and on conjugated polymers are considered, and their applications in organic solar cells, photodetectors, and photorefractive devices are discussed.

Precise Characterisation of Molecular Orientation in a Single Crystal Field-Effect Transistor Using Polarised Raman Spectroscopy

Charge transport in organic semiconductors is strongly dependent on the molecular orientation and packing, such that manipulation of this molecular packing is a proven technique for enhancing the charge mobility in organic transistors. However, quantitative measurements of molecular orientation in micrometre-scale structures are experimentally challenging. Several research groups have suggested polarised Raman spectroscopy as a suitable technique for these measurements and have been able to partially characterise molecular orientations using one or two orientation parameters. Here we demonstrate a new approach that allows quantitative measurements of molecular orientations in terms of three parameters, offering the complete characterisation of a three-dimensional orientation. We apply this new method to organic semiconductor molecules in a single crystal field-effect transistor in order to correlate the measured orientation with charge carrier mobility measurements. This approach offers the opportunity for micrometre resolution (diffraction limited) spatial mapping of molecular orientation using bench-top apparatus, enabling a rational approach towards controlling this orientation to achieve optimum device performance.

Nucleation and strain-stabilization during organic semiconductor thin film deposition

The nucleation mechanisms during solution deposition of organic semiconductor thin films determine the grain morphology and may influence the crystalline packing in some cases. Here, in-situ optical spectromicroscopy in reflection mode is used to study the growth mechanisms and thermal stability of 6,13-bis(trisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene thin films. The results show that the films form in a supersaturated state before transforming to a solid film. Molecular aggregates corresponding to subcritical nuclei in the crystallization process are inferred from optical spectroscopy measurements of the supersaturated region. Strain-free solid films exhibit a temperature-dependent blue shift of optical absorption peaks due to a continuous thermally driven change of the crystalline packing. As crystalline films are cooled to ambient temperature they become strained although cracking of thicker films is observed, which allows the strain to partially relax. Below a critical thickness, cracking is not observed and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements confirm that the thinnest films are constrained to the lattice constants corresponding to the temperature at which they were deposited. Optical spectroscopy results show that the transition temperature between Form I (room temperature phase) and Form II (high temperature phase) depends on the film thickness, and that Form I can also be strain-stabilized up to 135 °C.

A Lattice-Strained Organic Single-Crystal Nanowire Array Fabricated via Solution-Phase Nanograting-Assisted Pattern Transfer for Use in High-Mobility Organic Field-Effect Transistors

A 50 nm-wide 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene nanowire (NW) array is fabricated on a centimeter-sized substrate via a facile nanograting-assisted pattern-transfer method. NW growth under a nanoconfined space adopts a lattice-strained packing motif of the NWs for strong intermolecular electronic coupling, and thus a NW-based organic field-effect transistor shows high field-effect mobility up to 9.71 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) .

Perovskite Solar Cells: Influence of Hole Transporting Materials on Power Conversion Efficiency

The recent advances in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) created a tsunami effect in the photovoltaic community. PSCs are newfangled high-performance photovoltaic devices with low cost that are solution processable for large-scale energy production. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of such devices experienced an unprecedented increase from 3.8 % to a certified value exceeding 20 %, demonstrating exceptional properties of perovskites as solar cell materials. A key advancement in perovskite solar cells, compared with dye-sensitized solar cells, occurred with the replacement of liquid electrolytes with solid-state hole-transporting materials (HTMs) such as 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis-(N,N-di-4-methoxyphenylamino)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD), which contributed to enhanced PCE values and improved the cell stability. Following improvements in the perovskite crystallinity to produce a smooth, uniform morphology, the selective and efficient extraction of positive and negative charges in the device dictated the PCE of PSCs. In this Review, we focus mainly on the HTMs responsible for hole transport and extraction in PSCs, which is one of the essential components for efficient devices. Here, we describe the current state-of-the-art in molecular engineering of hole-transporting materials that are used in PSCs and highlight the requisites for market-viability of this technology. Finally, we include an outlook on molecular engineering of new functional HTMs for high efficiency PSCs.
