Abstract
An approach to electrochemical oxygenation of indoles leading to isatins was developed by merging with a complementary cathode oxygen reduction reaction. The features of this green protocol include the use of molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant, it being free of an electron transfer mediator, and gram-scale preparation. Mechanistic studies suggested a radical process, and the two oxygen atoms in the isatins were both most likely from molecular oxygen. A detailed mechanism of the reaction utilizing density functional theory calculations was elucidated.

Abstract
A regio- and stereoselective iodolactonization of internal electron-deficient olefinic acids has been reported, which provides a straightforward access to a series of multi-functionalized seven-membered lactones containing two consecutive chiral centers. The ester substituents on the olefins played a key role in achieving high regioselectivity. This result was proved through experiments and DFT calculations.

Abstract
A concise and scalable synthetic route for optically pure (4S) and (4R)-5-(3′,4′-dihydroxyphenyl)-γ-valerolactones (DHPVs), catechin metabolites, has been developed via the efficient construction of a γ-valerolactone moiety from hexenol. Noticeably, the different skin wrinkle-reducing activities of each metabolite were revealed via our unique syntheses of DHPVs in an enantiomerically pure form.

Abstract
Traditionally, the reductive aldol reaction is a metal-catalyzed and hydride-promoted coupling between enones and aldehydes. We present a phosphine-mediated diastereoselective intramolecular reductive aldol reaction of α-substituted dienones and aldehydes, which is metal-free and hydride-free. The synthetic utility of the reductive aldol adducts is demonstrated by elaborating them in one step to indeno[1,2- b]furanones, indeno[1,2- b]pyrans, and dibenzo[ a, h]azulen-8-ones.

Abstract
A new method for the direct conversion of 4-pentenylsulfonamides to 2-formylpyrrolidines and a 2-ketopyrrolidine has been developed. This transformation occurs via aerobic copper-catalyzed alkene aminooxygenation where molecular oxygen serves as both oxidant and oxygen source. The 2-formylpyrrolidines can further undergo oxidative carbon-carbon bond cleavage in situ upon addition of DABCO, providing 2-pyrrolidinones. These transformations have been demonstrated for a range of 4-pentenylsulfonamides. 4-Pentenylalcohols also undergo oxidative cyclization to form γ-lactones predominantly. The reaction is chemoselective, oxidizing one alkene in the presence of others, and is compatible with several functional groups. Application of these reactions to the formal syntheses of baclofen and (+)-monomorine was demonstrated.

Abstract
The ruthenium pincer-catalyzed synthesis of γ-butyrolactones from 1,2-diols and malonates using borrowing-hydrogen methodology is reported. This regioselective domino-process takes place through catalytic C-C bond formation, followed by intramolecular transesterification. Herein, we show the Ru-MACHO-BH complex as a valuable catalyst in hydrogen autotransfer reactions.

Abstract
4-Pentenoxyl radicals sharing two or more carbon atoms with a cycloalkane cyclize in a predictable manner stereoselectively and regioselectively to afford in solutions of bromotrichloromethane cycloalkyl-fused or -bridged 2-bromomethyltetrahydrofurans in up to 95% yield. Stereoselectivity in alkenoxyl radical ring closures arises from cumulative steric effects. The substituent positioned the closest to the alkene carbon, which is being attacked by the oxygen radical, exerts the strongest stereodirecting effect. This principal inductor guides 5-exo-cyclization 2,3-trans- or 2,4-cis-selectively. The substituent located further from the attacked π-bond is the secondary inductor. A secondary inductor in the relative trans-configuration enhances stereodifferentiation by the primary inductor; a cis-configured secondary inductor decreases this effect. A secondary inductor is not able to overrule the guiding effect of a similar sized primary inductor. Intramolecular 4-pentenoxyl radical additions to a cyclohexene-bound exo-methylene group or to endocyclic double bonds proceed cis-specifically, as exemplified by synthesis of a diastereomerically pure bromobicyclo[2.2.1]heptyl-annulated tetrahydrofuran from the verbenylethyloxyl radical. According to theory, the experimental 2,3-cis-specificity in alkoxyl radical cyclization to an endocyclic π-bond arises from strain associated with the 2,3-trans-ring closure.

A silver(I)-promoted intramolecular hemiacetal alkylation has been developed that converts readily available keto-chlorodiols into functionalized spiroacetals containing 5,5-, 5,6-, and 5,7-membered ring systems. Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide was employed as the terminal oxidant in the osmium tetroxide mediated oxidative cleavage of olefins, producing the corresponding aldehyde and ketone products. Aryl olefins are cleaved in good to excellent yield regardless of arene electronics. Alkyl olefins cleave in moderate to good yield for di- and tri-substituted alkenes.

Abstract
Presented is a methodology to oxidatively cleave alpha-hydroxyketones and alpha- or beta-diones using the environmentally benign reagent KHSO(5), prepared easily from Oxone, to diesters in one simple transformation. In addition, we undertook a mechanistic study to provide a plausible mechanistic interpretation. These reactions may prove to be valuable alternatives to other related metal-mediated processes.
