Abstract
Aryl 2-pyridyl esters could efficiently undergo cross-electrophile couplings with aryl bromides with the aid of magnesium as a reducing metal in the absence of a transition-metal catalyst, leading to the unsymmetrical diaryl ketones in modest to good yields with wide functionality compatibility. In addition, the reaction could be easily scaled up and applied in the late-stage modification of biologically active molecules. Preliminary mechanistic study showed that the coupling reaction presumably proceeds through the in situ formation of arylmagnesium reagents as key intermediates.

Abstract
We report a one-pot synthesis of (E)-trisubstituted enones from acrylic acids through the in situ generation of a 2-pyridyl ester and subsequent cross-electrophile coupling with a nickel catalyst under reducing conditions. The scope of trisubstituted enones is broad and compatible with functionality that can be challenging in established olefination techniques. We highlight conditions necessary to suppress undesired side reactions from the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl and improve cross-electrophile coupling approaches to prepare enones.

Abstract
Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in the direct C-H acylation of naphthalenes, occurring at the α or β-positions to yield valuable ketones through Friedel-Crafts acylation or transition-metal-catalysed carbonylative coupling reactions. Nevertheless, highly regioselective acylation of naphthalenes remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we developed a nickel-catalysed reductive ring-opening reaction of 7-oxabenzonorbornadienes with acyl chlorides as the electrophilic coupling partner, providing a new method for the exclusive preparation of β-acyl naphthalenes.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed direct decarboxylative transformations of aromatic carboxylic acids usually require high temperatures, which limit the substrate's scope, especially for late-stage applications. The development of the selective decarbonylative of carboxylic acid derivatives, especially the most fundamental aroyl chlorides, with stable and cheap electrophiles under mild conditions is highly desirable and meaningful, but remains challenging. Herein, a strategy of nickel-catalyzed decarbonylative alkylation of aroyl chlorides via phosphine/nitrogen ligand relay is reported. The simple phosphine ligand is found essential for the decarbonylation step, while the nitrogen ligand promotes the cross-electrophile coupling. Such a ligand relay system can effectively and orderly carry out the catalytic process at room temperature, utilizing easily available aroyl chlorides as an aryl electrophile for reductive alkylation. This discovery provides a new strategy for direct decarbonylative coupling, features operationally simple, mild conditions, and excellent functional group tolerance. The mild approach is applied to the late-stage methylation of various pharmaceuticals. Extensive experiments are carried out to provide insights into the reaction pathway and support the ligand relay process.

Abstract
A direct synthesis of ketones by the nickel-catalyzed deaminative cross-coupling of alkylpyridinium salts with thiopyridine esters has been reported. The reaction works well for both primary and secondary amines. This approach affords a highly valuable vista for the facile synthesis of ketones from easily accessible feedstock chemicals. The utility of this method is demonstrated through the functionalization of complex bioactives and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Carbon-heteroatom bonds, most often amide and ester bonds, are the standard method to link together two complex fragments because carboxylic acids, amines, and alcohols are ubiquitous and the reactions are reliable. However, C-N and C-O linkages are often a metabolic liability because they are prone to hydrolysis. While C(sp2)-C(sp3) linkages are preferable in many cases, methods to make them require different starting materials or are less functional-group-compatible. We show here a new, decarbonylative reaction that forms C(sp2)-C(sp3) bonds from the reaction of activated carboxylic acids (via 2-pyridyl esters) with activated alkyl groups derived from amines (via N-alkyl pyridinium salts) and alcohols (via alkyl halides). Key to this process is a remarkably fast, reversible oxidative addition/decarbonylation sequence enabled by pyridone and bipyridine ligands that, under reaction conditions that purge CO(g), lead to a selective reaction. The conditions are mild enough to allow coupling of more complex fragments, such as those used in drug development, and this is demonstrated in the coupling of a typical Proteolysis Targeting Chimera (PROTAC) anchor with common linkers via C-C linkages.

Abstract
The cross-electrophile coupling of either twisted-amides or heteroaryl halides with alkyl halides, enabled by ball-milling, is herein described. The operationally simple nickel-catalyzed process has no requirement for inert atmosphere or dry solvents and delivers the corresponding acylated or heteroarylated products across a broad range of substrates. Key to negating the necessity of inert reaction conditions is the mechanical activation of the raw metal terminal reductant: manganese in the case of twisted amides and zinc for heteroaryl halides.

Abstract
A method was developed for ketone synthesis via a photoredox-assisted reductive acyl cross-coupling (PARAC) using a nickel/photoredox dual-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling of two different carboxylic acid esters. A variety of aryl, 1°, 2°, 3°-alkyl 2-pyridyl esters can act as acyl electrophiles while N-(acyloxy)phthalimides (NHPI esters) act as 1°, 2°, 3°-radical precursors. Our PARAC strategy provides an alternative and reliable way to synthesize various sterically congested 3°-3°, 3°-2°, and aryl-3° ketones under mild and highly unified conditions, which have been otherwise difficult to access. The combined experimental and computational studies identified a Ni0 /NiI /NiIII pathway for ketone formation.

Abstract
Reported here is a concise total synthesis of (-)-berkelic acid in eight linear steps. This synthesis features a Catellani reaction/oxa-Michael cascade for the construction of the isochroman scaffold, a one-pot deprotection/spiroacetalization operation for the formation of the tetracyclic core structure, and a late-stage Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling for the introduction of the lateral chain. Notably, four stereocenters are established from a single existing chiral center with excellent stereocontrol during the deprotection/spiroacetalization process. Stereocontrol of the intriguing deprotection/spiroacetalization process is supported by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate the successful use of robust phenolic esters as an electrophilic acyl source in the reaction with diverse primary and secondary unactivated alkyl bromides. The cleavage of the relatively inert C-O bond is facilitated by the neighboring coordinating hydroxyl or sulfonamide moiety. By circumventing the use of pregenerated organometallics, this method allows efficient preparation of a variety of o-hydroxyl and tosyl-protected o-amino aryl ketones with high compatibility with a wide range of functionalities.

Abstract
The nucleophilic substitution reactions of hydroxyl groups are one of the most fundamental and widely spread transformations in organic chemistry. Among them, PIII-mediated deoxygenative nucleophilic substitution reactions, such as the Mitsunobu reaction, are frequently used strategies and often require stoichiometric oxidants to activate PIII reagents to induce the desired reactions. It has been illustrated that PIII reagents can be oxidized into the corresponding radical cations through single-electron oxidation by photocatalysis or electro-oxidation. These phosphine radical cations can react with alcohols or carboxylic acids to form the corresponding alkoxyphosphonium or acyloxyphosphonium intermediates, which are very reactive and easily get decomposed. The release of tri-substituted phosphine oxides as a driving force triggers the following nucleophilic substitution. This strategy does not require the use of stoichiometric oxidants and it eludes safety and stability problems. In this review, we summarise the recent advances and discoveries in PIII-assisted direct deoxygenative reactions under photochemical or electrochemical conditions.

Abstract
Nickel-catalyzed reductive cross-coupling reactions have emerged as powerful methods to join two electrophiles. These reactions have proven particularly useful for the coupling of sec-alkyl electrophiles to form stereogenic centers; however, the development of enantioselective variants remains challenging. In this Perspective, we summarize the progress that has been made toward Ni-catalyzed enantioselective reductive cross-coupling reactions.

Abstract
The electrophile-electrophile cross-coupling of carboxylic acid derivatives and alkylpyridinium salts via C-N bond cleavage is developed. The method is distinguished by its simplicity and steers us through a variety of functionalized ketones in good to excellent yields. Besides acid chlorides, carboxylic acids were also employed as acylating agents, which enabled us to incorporate acid-sensitive functional groups such as MOM, BOC, and acetal. Control experiments with TEMPO revealed a radical pathway.

Abstract
Direct conversion of aldehydes to ketones is achieved via rhodium-catalyzed vinyl triflate-aldehyde reductive coupling-redox isomerization mediated by potassium formate. This method circumvents premetalated C-nucleophiles and discrete redox manipulations typically required to form ketones from aldehydes.

Abstract
Lignans are a structurally diverse class of natural products with extensive pharmacological effects. Here we report the syntheses of both natural and unnatural dibenzylbutane lignans from a common intermediate, which is prepared in five steps from known materials. Derivatization of this intermediate affords lignans featuring contiguous stereocenters in a high diastereomeric purity after chromatography. This divergent synthetic route can be exploited to prepare dibenzylbutane lignans and analogues thereof to probe their biological profiles.

Abstract
Cross-coupling reactions, which were discovered almost 50 years ago, are widely used in both industry and academia. Even though cross-coupling reactions now represent mature technology, there is still a significant amount of research in this area that aims to improve the scope of these reactions, develop more efficient catalysts, and make reactions more practical. In this tutorial, a brief background to cross-coupling reactions is provided, and then the major advances in cross-coupling research over the last 20 years are described. These include the development of improved ligands and precatalysts for cross-coupling and the extension of cross-coupling reactions to a much wider range of electrophiles. For example, cross-coupling reactions are now common with sp3-hybridized electrophiles as well as ester, amide, ether, and aziridine substrates. For many of these more modern substrates, traditional palladium-based catalysts are less efficient than systems based on first-row transition metals such as nickel. Conventional cross-coupling reactions have also inspired the development of a range of related reactions, such as cross-electrophile and decarboxylative couplings as well as couplings based on metallaphotoredox chemistry. The development of these new reactions is probably at the same stage as traditional cross-coupling reactions 30 years ago, and this tutorial highlights how many of the same strategies used to improve cross-coupling reactions may also be applicable to making the new reactions more practical.

Abstract
A method for direct cross coupling between unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds and chloroformates has been accomplished via nickel and photoredox catalysis. A diverse range of feedstock chemicals, such as (a)cyclic alkanes and toluenes, along with late-stage intermediates, undergo intermolecular C-C bond formation to afford esters under mild conditions using only 3 equiv of the C-H partner. Site selectivity is predictable according to bond strength and polarity trends that are consistent with the intermediacy of a chlorine radical as the hydrogen atom-abstracting species.

Abstract
Mechanistic evaluations and comparison of two important aerobic catalytic oxidation processes, aerobic copper catalysis and photoredox catalysis, are performed. Interesting and distinct catalytic behaviors were observed for a common reaction of iodolactonization of alkenoic acids. Namely, the aerobic copper catalysis requires the formation of a copper carboxylate, whereas the aerobic photoredox catalysis requires the addition of proton sources to proceed to completion. Furthermore, the iodolactone products obtained from these catalytic processes are extensively derivatized to a number of functionalized lactones, including aryl lactones generated from the nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling with aryl halides.

Abstract
The construction of an aryl ketone structural unit by means of catalytic carbon–carbon coupling reactions represents the state-of-the-art in organic chemistry. Herein we achieved the direct deoxygenative ketone synthesis in aqueous solution from readily available aromatic carboxylic acids and alkenes, affording structurally diverse ketones in moderate to good yields. Visible-light photoredox catalysis enables the direct deoxygenation of acids as acyl sources with triphenylphosphine and represents a distinct perspective on activation. The synthetic robustness is supported by the late-stage modification of several pharmaceutical compounds and complex molecules. This ketone synthetic strategy is further applied to the synthesis of the drug zolpidem in three steps with 50% total yield and a concise construction of cyclophane-braced 18–20 membered macrocycloketones. It represents not only the advancement for the streamlined synthesis of aromatic ketones from feedstock chemicals, but also a photoredox radical activation mode beyond the redox potential of carboxylic acids. Synthesis of aryl ketones can be generally achieved via C–C coupling strategies. Here, the authors show a deoxygenative coupling of carboxylic acids and alkenes enabled by photoredox catalysis and report a wide scope of products, including bioactive and macrocyclic ketones.

Abstract
Chalcogen-containing compounds have received considerable attention because of their manifold applications in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and material science. While many classical methods have been developed for preparing organic sulfides, most of them exploited the transition-metal-catalyzed cross-couplings of aryl halides or pseudo halides with thiols or disulfides, with harsh reaction conditions usually being required. Herein, we present a user-friendly, nickel-catalyzed reductive thiolation of unactivated primary and secondary alkyl bromides with thiosulfonates as reliable thiolation reagents, which are easily prepared and bench-stable. Furthermore, a series of selenides is also prepared in a similar fashion with selenosulfonates as selenolation reagents. This catalytic method offers a facile synthesis of a wide range of unsymmetrical alkyl-aryl or alkyl-alkyl sulfides and selenides under mild conditions with an excellent tolerance of functional groups. Likewise, the use of sensitive and stoichiometric organometallic reagents can be avoided.
