Abstract
The first straightforward strategy for the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl Z-alkenes has been developed via an electrochemical cross-coupling reaction of sulfoxonium ylides and alkynes with water. The metal-free protocol showed an easy-to-handle nature, good functional group tolerance, and high Z-stereoselectivity, which is rare in previous cases. The proposed reaction mechanism was convincingly established by carrying out a series of control experiments, cyclic voltammetry experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) studies.

Abstract
The chemical synthesis of molecules with closely packed atoms having their bond coordination saturated is a challenge to synthetic chemists, especially when three-dimensional control is required. The organocatalyzed asymmetric synthesis of acyclic alkenylated, alkynylated and heteroarylated quaternary carbon stereocenters via 1,4-conjugate addition is here catalyzed by 3,3´-bisperfluorotoluyl-BINOL. The highly useful products (31 examples) are produced in up to 99% yield and 97:3 er using enediketone substrates and potassium trifluoroorganoborate nucleophiles. In addition, mechanistic experiments show that the (Z)-isomer is the reactive form, ketone rotation at the site of bond formation is needed for enantioselectivity, and quaternary carbon formation is favored over tertiary. Density functional theory-based calculations show that reactivity and selectivity depend on a key n→π* donation by the unbound ketone's oxygen lone pair to the boronate-coordinated ketone in a 5-exo-trig cyclic ouroboros transition state. Transformations of the conjugate addition products to key quaternary carbon-bearing synthetic building blocks proceed in good yield.

Abstract
An aerobic oxidative cleavage of 1,3-diketones under visible light irradiation using an organic dye as a photocatalyst is disclosed. The newly developed reaction provides practical access to 1,2-diketones and (Z)-1,4-enediones in moderate to good yields with absolute regio- and stereoselectivity. Mechanistic studies of the reaction suggest that tetraketone intermediates might undergo a photocatalytic energy transfer from the excited photocatalyst to form biradical-like (n,π*) states of ketones.

Abstract
A photomediated protocol giving facile access to substituted β-lactam and β-lactones is presented. The method realizes, for the first time, the use of the Zimmerman-O'Connell-Griffin (ZOG) rearrangement in [2 + 2] cycloaddition. Products are obtained in high yield with excellent diastereoselectivity under visible light irradiation and under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
A solvent (2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) vs ethyl alcohol (EtOH)) switched synthesis of quinolines and pyridines is illustrated from (E)-2-(1,3-diphenylallylidene)malononitriles via a Pd(II)-catalyzed photochemical process. The active catalyst [L2Pd(0)] generated serves as an exogenous photosensitizer. The process offers predominantly Z-alkenylated quinolines and pyridines in TFE and EtOH, respectively. Furthermore, large-scale synthesis and a few interesting post-synthetic modifications have been demonstrated.

Abstract
This review article focuses on the α-functionalization of acetophenones involving Kornblum oxidation and C-H functionalizations. Although various other strategies, such as classical approaches, enamine approaches and umpolung strategy are also known for this functionalization, here we discuss mainly the Kornblum oxidation approach and C-H functionalization strategy as they have advantages over the others. In Kornblum oxidation, the reaction uses iodine and dimethylsulfoxide and proceeds through the formation of arylglyoxal as the key intermediate. In C-H functionalization, the reaction requires metal, or metal-free catalyst, and generates radical intermediate in most cases. α-Functionalization of acetophenones is very important because of their huge applications in the synthesis of various natural products and pharmaceuticals and, therefore, a number of research articles have been published in this area. However, no review articles are available so far. In this article, we present a succinct discussion of various important and novel reactions, along with their mechanisms, published since 2012 to date. We believe that this first review article in this field will give readers one-stop information on this topic and encourage further intriguing work in this area.

Abstract
We report a highly efficient and selective catalytic system, ABNO (9-azabicyclo-[3.3.1]nonane N-oxyl)/HNO3, for the aerobic oxidation of substituted furans to cis-2-ene-1,4-diones under mild reaction conditions using oxygen as the oxidant. The catalyst system is amenable to various substituted (mon-, di-, and tri-) furans and tolerates diverse functional groups, including cyano, nitro, naphthyl, ketone, ester, heterocycle, and even formyl groups. Based on the control and 18O-labeling experiments, the possible mechanism of the oxidation is proposed.

Abstract
Carbocyclinone-534 is a new antibiotic produced after the metabolism of tapinarof. We identify a biomimetic total synthesis of carbocyclinone-534 in eight steps by taking advantage of an intermolecular Diels-Alder homodimerization/dehydrogenation/intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition cascade. This synthetic sequence provides direct experimental evidence for revealing the biosynthetic pathway of carbocyclinone-534.

Abstract
A copper(I)/DDQ-mediated double-dehydrogenative Diels-Alder (DDDA) reaction of simple butenes with 1,4-diketones and indolones has been established for the first time. This strategy is based on a tandem double-dehydrogenation/Diels-Alder reaction from nonprefunctionalized starting materials, in which both a diene and dienophile were in situ generated via activation of fourfold inert C(sp3)-H bonds in one catalytic system.

Abstract
We report a direct, straightforward, and regioselective hydration of 1,4-enynes designed from Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts. Under smooth conditions and short reaction times, gold-catalyzed hydration of internal alkynes provides synthetically useful ketones as single regioisomers in yields higher than 90%. The synthetic usefulness of this protocol was demonstrated by the conversion of selected ketones into biologically valuable α-alkylidene-γ-lactones upon reduction with sodium borohydride. In the course of the scope evaluation, we discovered that this methodology could also furnish α-arylidene-β,γ-butenolides.

Abstract
The mol-ecular structure of (2E)-1,4-bis-(4-chloro-phen-yl)but-2-ene-1,4-dione [C16H10Cl2O2, (1)] is composed of two p-chlorophenyl rings, each bonded on opposite ends to a near planar 1,4-trans enedione moiety [-C(=O)-CH=CH-(C=O)-] [r.m.s. deviation = 0.003 (1) Å]. (2E)-1,4-Bis(4-bromo-phen-yl)but-2-ene-1,4-dione [C16H10Br2O2, (2)] has a similar structure to (1), but with two p-bromophenyl rings and a less planar enedione group [r.m.s. deviation = 0.011 (1) Å]. Both mol-ecules sit on a center of inversion, thus Z' = 0.5. The dihedral angles between the ring and the enedione group are 16.61 (8) and 15.58 (11)° for (1) and (2), respectively. In the crystal, mol-ecules of (1) exhibit C-Cl⋯Cl type I inter-actions, whereas mol-ecules of (2) present C-Br⋯Br type II inter-actions. van der Waals-type inter-actions contribute to the packing of both mol-ecules, and the packing reveals face-to-face ring stacking with similar inter-planar distances of approximately 3.53 Å.

Abstract
A mild transition-metal-free protocol to prepare 2,3-dialkylated tartaric acid esters has been developed by taking advantage of a visible light photoredox-catalyzed reductive dimerization of α-ketoesters with a combination of an organic dye photocatalyst and a Hantzsch-type 1,4-dihydropyridine hydrogen donor. A broad range of functional groups including cyclopropane, alkene, alkyne, 4-methoxybenzyl ether, acetal, silyl ether, carbamate, cyclic ether, cyclic thioether, bromoalkane, and N-alkoxyphthalimide are well-compatible. By employing the visible light photoredox-catalyzed reductive coupling and the subsequent optical resolution, both enantioenriched diastereomers of 2,3-dialkylated tartaric acid could be acquired conveniently.

Abstract
The synthesis of small rings by functionalization of C(sp3)−H bonds remains a great challenge. We report for the first time a copper‐catalyzed [1+1+1] cyclotrimerization of acetophenone derivatives under mild reaction conditions. The reaction has a broad scope for the stereoselective synthesis of cyclopropanes by trimerization of acetophenone. The developed transformation is based on an extraordinary copper‐catalyzed cascade process that allows saturated carbocycles to be obtained for the first time by cyclotrimerization through functionalization of C(sp3)−H bonds. The cascade of sixfold C(sp3)−H bond functionalization allows the synthesis of cyclopropanes in a highly stereoselective approach.
