Abstract
Dinuclear lanthanide complexes [((HB(pz)3)2Dy)2(μ-Th2An)] (1Dy) and [((HB(pz)3)2Dy)2(μ-ClCNAn)] (2Dy), based on the hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate (HBpz3-) scorpionate capping ligand and anilate (An2-) bridging linkers, namely homosubstituted dithiophene- and heterosubstituted chlorocyanoanilate, bearing electron-donating and withdrawing substituents at the 3,6-positions of the benzoquinone core, are reported. 1Dy shows an octacoordinated {N6O2} DyIII ion within a D4h distorted square antiprismatic coordination, an ideal geometry for Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior, given its oblate nature, whereas in 2Dy the octacoordinated DyIII ion adopts a D2d triangular dodecahedron geometry, while maintaining the same {N6O2} coordination sphere. Both complexes show field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour, with tuning of the slow magnetic relaxation as a function of the nature of the substituents at the 3,6-positions of the anilate moiety. A comparison of the Arrhenius fitting parameters for 1Dy and 2Dy supports the hypothesis that square antiprismatic DyIII complexes, as 1Dy, exhibit higher energy barriers. This interpretation is supported by ab initio calculations that also shed light on the crucial role of intermolecular dipolar interactions.

Abstract
Cytospora is a genus of fungi belonging to the Cytosporaceae family (Sordariomycetes, Ascomycota) considered as a prolific source of specialized metabolites due to their ability to produce diverse secondary metabolites with a broad range of biological activities. Since the first chemical investigation of this genus in the 1980s, further studies have led to the isolation and structural elucidation of several bioactive compounds including cytosporones, nonanolides, macrocyclic dilactones, and terpenoids. This review summarizes, for the first time, the chemical diversity of bioactive secondary metabolites from the genus Cytospora and highlights its potential as an alternative source of secondary metabolites for pharmacological studies. Moreover, this review will serve as a basis for future investigations of compounds of this genus.

Abstract
A direct functionalization of numerous 1,4-quinones with various aryl boronic acids is reported under blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This reaction occurs at room temperature in an open flask without any catalysts, base, and oxidants in acetonitrile (ACN) and is scalable in grams. With diverse 1,4-quinones like 1,4-benzo-, naphtho-, anthra-, and 4-bromonaphthoquinones as substrates, facile cross coupling reactions occur with aryl and alkyl boronic acids without assistance from any photocatalysts. 2-Alkylated cyclohexene-1,4-diones were obtained when the 1,4-quinones were reacted with alkyl boronic acids under standard reaction conditions. However, slight warming of the reaction mixture afforded the desired alkylated 1,4-quinones. The reaction is believed to proceed through the blue LED-induced radical formation of the aryl rings assisted by the 1,4-quinones.

Abstract
Quinones are widespread in plants, animals, insects, and microorganisms. Several anticancer agents contain quinone structures as critical parts to show remarkable potential and distinctive modes of actions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structure-activity relationships of microbial quinones and their derivatives as anticancer agents. A series of p-terphenylquinone and seriniquinone derivatives were therefore prepared. Treatment of the synthesized quinones possessed antiproliferative activity on human leukemia HL-60 cells in a dose-dependent fashion. In addition, seriniquinone derivatives elevated cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, thereby triggering the ensuing apoptotic events. Our findings emphasize the excellent potential of seriniquinone derivatives as redox cycling-induced ROS-modulating anticancer agents.

Abstract
The coordination polymers (CPs) with binary ligands, including 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (H2DHBQ) and 4,4'-bipyridyl (bpy), were synthesized using in situ hydrolysis of 2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (DMBQ). Three kinds of CPs were obtained depending on the metal ions. For M = Mn and Zn, a 1D zigzag chain structure with cis conformation ( cis-1D-M) was obtained, whereas Co, Ni, and Cu compounds afforded a 2D net structure with trans conformation (trans -2D-M) with a 1D pore. A linear chain structure was also obtained for M = Cu. Magnetic susceptibility (χM T) at 300 K in cis -1D-Mn and trans -2D-Co was evaluated to be 4.421 and 2.950 cm3 K mol-1, respectively, indicating that both compounds are in the high-spin state. According to the N2 adsorption isotherms at 77 K, trans -2D-Ni showed microporosity with the BET surface area of 177 m2 g-1, whereas the isomorphic trans -2D-Co rarely adsorbed N2 at 77 K. This phenomenon was explained by the difference of diffusion kinetics of the adsorbent molecules, which was supported by the CO2 adsorption isotherms at 195 K. The optical band gaps of cis -1D-Mn, cis -1D-Zn, trans -2D-Co, and trans -2D-Ni were estimated to be 1.6, 1.8, 1.0, and 1.1 eV, respectively, by using UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy.

Abstract
An atom-economical approach for the synthesis of arylquinones was achieved successfully via direct oxidative C-C dehydrogenative coupling reaction of quinones/hydroquinones with electron-rich arenes using an inexpensive Fe-I2-(NH4)2S2O8 system. The efficiency of this catalytic approach was established with a broad scope of substrates involving quinones and hydroquinones to give high yields (60-89%) of several arylated quinones. The present protocol is simple, practical, and shows good functional group tolerance.

Abstract
We report the identification of the ter gene cluster responsible for the formation of the p-terphenyl derivatives terfestatins B and C and echoside B from the Appalachian Streptomyces strain RM-5-8. We characterize the function of TerB/C, catalysts that work together as a dual enzyme system in the biosynthesis of natural terphenyls. TerB acts as a reductase and TerC as a dehydratase to enable the conversion of polyporic acid to a terphenyl triol intermediate. X-ray crystallography of the apo and substrate-bound forms for both enzymes provides additional mechanistic insights. Validation of the TerC structural model via mutagenesis highlights a critical role of arginine 143 and aspartate 173 in catalysis. Cumulatively, this work highlights a set of enzymes acting in harmony to control and direct reactive intermediates and advances fundamental understanding of the previously unresolved early steps in terphenyl biosynthesis.

Abstract
A metal-free protocol for the direct bis-arylation of 2,5-dichlorobenzoquinone with aryldiazonium salts is reported. The reactive salts are generated in situ and converted to radicals through irradiation with visible light. Reaction products precipitate from the solvent, eliminating the need for purification and thus providing a novel green method for the synthesis of versatile bis-electrophiles.

Abstract
A metal free and highly regioselective oxidative arylation reaction of fluorophenols is described. The relative position of the fluoride leaving group (i.e., ortho or para) controls the 1,2 or 1,4 nature of the arylated quinone product, lending versatility and generality to this oxidative, defluorinative, arylation concept.

Abstract
Eleven new p-terphenyls, floricolins K-U (1-11), together with 13 biosynthetically related known compounds (12-24) were isolated from an endolichenic fungus, Floricola striata. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. The newly isolated p-terphenyls inhibited the growth of A2780, MCF-7, and A549 cell lines. Further evaluation for the multidrug resistance (MDR) reversal activity of compound 5 revealed it enhanced the sensitivity of MCF-7/ADR cells toward adriamycin 39-fold at 10 μM through modulating P-glycoprotein-mediated drug exclusion.

Abstract
Bolinaquinone is a natural product that is a structurally complex, cytotoxic sesquiterpene quinone. A scaffold simplification and focused library approach using a microwave-assisted Suzuki coupling gave 32 bolinaquinone analogues with good-to-excellent cytotoxicity profiles. Mono-arylbenzoquinones, Library A, were preferentially toxic towards BE2-C (neuroblastoma) cells with growth inhibition (GI50) values of 4-12 µM; only the 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl 23 and 3-biphenyl 28 variants were broad-spectrum active-HT29 (colon carcinoma), U87 and SJ-G2 (glioblastoma), MCF-7 (breast carcinoma), A2780 (ovarian carcinoma), H460 (lung carcinoma), A431 (skin carcinoma), Du145 (prostate carcinoma), BE2-C (neuroblastoma), MIA (pancreatic carcinoma) and SMA (spontaneous murine astrocytoma). Library B with a second aryl moiety exhibited broad-spectrum cytotoxicity with MCF-7 cells' GI50 values of 5.6 ± 0.7 and 5.1 ± 0.5 µM for 2,5-dimethoxy-3-(naphthalene-1-yl)-6-(naphthalene-3-yl) 33 and 2,5-dimethoxy-3-(biaryl-2-yl)-6-(naphthalene-3-yl) 36, respectively. Similar potencies were also noted with 2,5-dimethoxy-3,6-diphenyl 30 against A2780 (GI50 = 5.9 ± 0.0 µM) and with 2,5-dimethoxy-3-(biaryl-3-yl)-6-(naphthalene-3-yl) 37 against HT29 (GI50 = 5.4 ± 0.4 µM), while the 3,4-dimethoxy mono-aryl analogue 23 exhibited good levels of activity against A2780 (GI50 = 3.8 ± 0.75 µM), the neuroblastoma cell line BE2-C (GI50 = 3 ± 0.35 µM) and SMA (GI50 = 3.9 ± 0.54 µM). Introduction of the amino-substituted Library C gave 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-5-(naphthalen-3-yl)-3,6-bis(propylamino) 43, with excellent activity against HT29 (0.08 ± 0.0 µM), MCF-7 (0.17 ± 0.1 µM), A2780 (0.14 ± 0.1 µM), A431 (0.11 ± 0.0 µM), Du145 (0.16 ± 0.1 µM), BE2-C (0.08 ± 0.0 µM) and MIA (0.1 ± 0.0 µM).

Abstract
We propose herein initial results to develop optimum redox mediators by the combination of computational simulation and catalytic functionalization of the core structure of vitamin K3. We aim to correlate the calculated energy value of the LUMO of different vitamin K3 derivatives with their actual redox potential. For this, we optimized the catalytic alkylation of 1,4-naphthoquinones with a designed Ag(i)/GO catalyst and synthesized a series of molecules.

Abstract
Polyozellin is a p-terphenyl compound which was isolated from Polyozellus multiplex, and exhibits an inhibitory activity against prolyl oligopeptidase (POP). Its structure was assigned as 1 having a p-terphenyl skeleton including a p-substituted dibenzofuran moiety by spectroscopic analyses and chemical means. This paper describes the total syntheses of the proposed structure 1 for polyozellin and its o-isomer 2, revising the structure of polyozellin to the latter. These syntheses involved a double Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using chlorophenylboronic acid as a common key building block, and Cu mediated Ullmann cyclization as key steps. The inhibitory activities of synthetic compounds against POP and cancer cells were also evaluated.

Abstract
Under oxidative conditions, 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs) undergo a homolytic cleavage, forming exclusively a Csp3-centered radical that can engage in the C-H alkylation of heterocyclic bases and 1,4-quinones. DHPs are readily prepared from aldehydes, and considering that aldehydes normally require harsh reaction conditions to take part in such transformations, with mixtures of alkylated and acylated products often being obtained, this net decarbonylative alkylation approach becomes particularly useful. The present method takes place under mild reaction conditions and requires only persulfate as a stoichiometric oxidant, making the procedure suitable for the late-stage C-H alkylation of complex molecules. Notably, structurally complex pharmaceutical agents could be functionalized or prepared with this protocol, such as the antimalarial Atovaquone and antitheilerial Parvaquone, thus evidencing its applicability. Mechanistic studies revealed a likely radical chain process via the formation of a dearomatized intermediate, providing a deeper understanding of the factors governing the reactivity of these radical forebears.

Abstract
Rh-catalyzed direct C-H/C-H cross-coupling reaction of various (hetero)arenes with quinones is developed. This protocol is effective for a broad range of both quinone and arene substrates and a wide range of directing groups for this reaction, affording structurally diverse aryl-substituted quinones with high synthetic utility. Moreover, the present synthetic route allowed for the rapid construction of the carbazole quinone moiety that was identified as a new inhibitor scaffold for GSKβ.

Abstract
A direct Pd-catalyzed C-H functionalization of benzoquinone (BQ) can be controlled to give either mono- or disubstituted BQ, including the installation of two different groups in a one-pot procedure. BQ can now be directly functionalized with aryl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl, and cycloalkene groups and, moreover, the reaction is conducted in environmentally benign water or acetone as solvents.

In the structure of the title compound, C8H6Br2O4, the complete mol-ecule is generated by the application of a centre of inversion. The mol-ecule is planar (r.m.s. deviation for all non-H atoms but methyl C = 0.0358 Å), with only the methyl groups being deviated from the plane [by ±0.321 (4) Å]. In the crystal packing, Br⋯O(methoxy) halogen bonds [3.2407 (19) Å] connect molecules into supramolecular layers parallel to (101).

Abstract
AIM Malic enzymes are oxidative decarboxylases with NAD(+) or NAD(P)(+) as cofactor that catalyze the conversion of L-malate to pyruvate and CO2. The aim of this study was to discover and characterize a potent inhibitor of human NAD(P)(+)-dependent malic enzyme 2 (ME2). METHODS Recombinant human ME2-His-Tag fusion protein was overexpressed in E coli and purified with Ni-NTA resin. A high-throughput screening (HTS) assay was developed to find ME2 inhibitors. Detergent Brij-35 was used to exclude false positives. The characteristics of the inhibitor were analyzed with enzyme kinetics analysis. A thermal shift assay for ME2 was carried out to verify the binding of the inhibitor with the enzyme. RESULTS An HTS system for discovering ME2 inhibitors was established with a Z' factor value of 0.775 and a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 9.80. A library containing 12 683 natural products was screened. From 47 hits, NPD387 was identified as an inhibitor of ME2. The primary structure-activity relationship study on NPD387 derivatives showed that one derivative NPD389 was more potent than the parent compound NPD387 (the IC50 of NPD389 was 4.63 ± 0.36 μmol/L or 5.59 ± 0.38 μmol/L, respectively, in the absence or presence of 0.01% Brij-35 in the assay system). The enzyme kinetics analysis showed that NPD389 was a fast-binding uncompetitive inhibitor with respect to the substrate NAD(+) and a mixed-type inhibitor with respect to the substrate L-malate. CONCLUSION NPD389 is a potent ME2 inhibitor that binds to the enzyme in a fast-binding mode, acting as an uncompetitive inhibitor with respect to the substrate NAD(+) and a mixed-type inhibitor with respect to the substrate L-malate.

Abstract
Edible mushrooms are known as an important source of natural antioxidants. The ethyl acetate extract of the edible mushroom Sarcodon leucopus (Zangzi mushroom) possesses strong antioxidative activity. Bioactivity-guided isolation afforded 10 compounds from its fruiting bodies, including two new sarcoviolins, sarcoviolin β (1) and episarcoviolin β (2), and one new p-terphenyl derivative (3) along with seven known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and comparison with the known compounds. Compounds 1-10 were found to have antioxidant effects in the DPPH scavenging assay, the total antioxidant capacity assay, the reducing power assay, and the lipid peroxidation assay. Further study indicated that they could protect DNA strands from free radical-induced cleavage at 200 μM. Compounds 1-10 also presented strong α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Of all tested compounds, compound 1 exhibited the strongest inhibitory activity, with an IC50 value of 0.58 μM.
