Studies on Three-Coordinate [Co{N(SiMe3)2}2L] Complexes, L = N-Heterocyclic Carbene

Unlocking the Metalation Applications of TMP-powered Fe and Co(II) bis(amides): Synthesis, Structure and Mechanistic Insights

Typified by LiTMP and TMPMgCl.LiCl, (TMP=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide), s-block metal amides have found widespread applications in arene deprotonative metalation. On the contrary, transition metal amides lack sufficient basicity to activate these substrates. Breaking new ground in this field, here we present the synthesis and full characterisation of earth-abundant transition metals M(TMP)2 (M=Fe, Co). Uncovering a new reactivity profile towards fluoroarenes, these amide complexes can promote direct M-H exchange processes regioselectively using one or two of their basic amide arms. Remarkably, even when using a perfluorinated substrate, selective C-H metalation occurs leaving C-F bonds intact. Their kinetic basicity can be boosted by LiCl or NBu4Cl additives which enables formation of kinetically activated ate species. Combining spectroscopic and structural studies with DFT calculations, mechanistic insights have been gained on how these low polarity metalation processes take place. M(TMP)2 can also be used to access ferrocene and cobaltocene by direct deprotonation of cyclopentadiene and undergo efficient CO2 insertion of both amide groups under mild reaction conditions.

Homoleptic quasilinear metal(i/ii) silylamides of Cr-Co with phenyl and allyl functions - impact of the oxidation state on secondary ligand interactions

Herein we describe the synthesis and characterization of a variety of new quasilinear metal(i/ii) silylamides of the type [M(N(Dipp)SiR₃)₂]^0,- (M = Cr-Co) with different silyl substituents (SiR₃ = SiPh_3-nMe_n (n = 1-3), SiMe₂(allyl)). By comparison of the solid state structures we show that in the case of phenyl substituents secondary metal-ligand interactions are suppressed upon reduction of the metal. Introduction of an allyl substituted silylamide gives divalent complexes with additional metal-π-alkene interactions with only weak activation of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond but substantial bending of the principal N-M-N axis. 1e^--reduction makes cobalt a more strongly bound alkene substituent, whereas for chromium, reduction and intermolecular dimerisation of the allyl unit are observed. It thus indicates that the general view of low-coordinate 3d-metal ions as electron deficient seems not to apply to anionic metal(i) complexes. Additionally, the obtained cobalt(i) complexes are reacted with an aryl azide giving trigonal imido metal complexes. These can be regarded as rare examples of high-spin imido cobalt compounds from their structural and solution magnetic features.

Magnetization relaxation dynamics of a rare coordinatively unsaturated Co(II) complex: experimental and theoretical insights

A robust and unusual three coordinate Co(ii) complex [Li(DME)3][Co(L)3] (1, where L = Lithium (2,6-diisopropylphenyl) amide and DME = Dimethoxyethane) shows easy plane magnetic anisotropy (D) which is validated by variable temperature X-band EPR studies. 1 also registered with the largest anisotropic barrier (51.1 K, τ0 = 1.98 × 10-8 s; Hdc ≠ 0) to the magnetization reversal among the three coordinate Co(ii) complexes. The role of its geometry on the SH parameters and the experimental observations are rationalized by theoretical calculations including the origin of magnetic anisotropy.

Slow magnetic relaxation in cobalt N-heterocyclic carbene complexes

The combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the magnetic properties of the cobalt(ii) NHC complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene); [Co(CH2SiMe3)2(IPr)] (1), [CoCl2(IMes)2] (2) and [Co(CH3)2(IMes)2] (3) revealed a large easy plane anisotropy for 1 (D = +73.7 cm-1) and a moderate easy axis anisotropy for 2 (D = -7.7 cm-1) due to significant out-of-state spin-orbit coupling. Dynamic magnetic measurements revealed slow relaxation of the magnetization for 1 (Ueff = 22.5 K, τ0 = 3 × 10-7 s, 1000 Oe) and for 2 (Ueff = 20.2 K, τ0 = 1.73 × 10-8 s, 1500 Oe). The molecular origin of the slow relaxation phenomena was further supported by the retention of AC signal in 10% solutions in 2-MeTHF which reveals a second zero field AC signal in 1 at higher frequencies. Compound 3 was found to be an S = 1/2 system.

C-H Bond Activation by an Imido Cobalt(III) and the Resulting Amido Cobalt(II) Complex

The 3d-metal mediated nitrene transfer is under intense scrutiny due to its potential as an atom economic and ecologically benign way for the directed amination of (un)functionalised C-H bonds. Here we present the isolation and characterisation of a rare, trigonal imido cobalt(III) complex, which bears a rather long cobalt-imido bond. It can cleanly cleave strong C-H bonds with a bond dissociation energy of up to 92 kcal mol-1 in an intermolecular fashion, unprecedented for imido cobalt complexes. This resulted in the amido cobalt(II) complex [Co(hmds)2 (NHt Bu)]- . Kinetic studies on this reaction revealed an H atom transfer mechanism. Remarkably, the cobalt(II) amide itself is capable of mediating H atom abstraction or stepwise proton/electron transfer depending on the substrate. A cobalt-mediated catalytic application for substrate dehydrogenation using an organo azide is presented.

Tuning electronic structure through halide modulation of mesoionic carbene cobalt complexes

The first examples of Co(ii) mesoionic carbene complexes (CoX2DippMIC2; X = Cl-, Br-, I-) demonstrate a new electronic perturbation on tetrahedral Co(ii) complexes. Using absorption spectroscopy and magnetometry, the consequences of the MIC's strong σ-donating/minimal π-accepting nature are analyzed and shown to be further tunable by the nature of the coordinated halide.

Double donation in trigonal planar iron-carbodiphosphorane complexes - a concise study on their spectroscopic and electronic properties

We present the syntheses of trigonal planar coordinated Fe(ii) carbodiphosphorane (CDPR) complexes, starting from iron(ii)-bis(trimethylsilylamide) [Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2] and hexaphenyl-(CDPPh) and sym-dimethyltetraphenyl-carbodiphosphoranes (CDPMe), respectively. Both complexes [CDPPh-Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2] (1) and [CDPMe-Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2] (2) were examined in solution and in the solid state. 1 shows a dissociation equilibrium in solution which we monitored by variable temperature 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Magnetic measurements of 1 and 2 yielded a high spin configuration (S = 2) for both complexes. Quantum chemical calculations were performed to analyze the bonding situation in compound 1.

Pogo-Stick Iron and Cobalt Complexes: Synthesis, Structures, and Magnetic Properties

The synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of monomeric half-sandwich iron and cobalt imidazolin-2-iminato complexes have been comprehensively investigated. Salt metathesis reactions of [Cp'M(μ-I)]₂ (1-M, M = Fe, Co; Cp' = η⁵-1,2,4-tri-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl) with [Im^DippNLi]₂ (Im^DippN = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-iminato) furnishes the terminal half-sandwich compounds [Cp'M(NIm^Dipp)] (2-M, M = Fe, Co), which can be regarded as models for elusive half-sandwich iron and cobalt imido complexes. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the structure motif of a one-legged piano stool. Complex 2-Co can also be prepared by an acid-base reaction between [Cp'Co{N(SiMe₃)₂}] (3-Co) and Im^DippNH. The electronic and magnetic properties of 2-M and 3-Co were probed by ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy (M = Fe), X-band EPR spectroscopy (M = Co), and solid-state magnetic susceptibility measurements. In particular, the central metal atom adopts a high-spin (S = 2) state in 2-Fe, while the cobalt complex 2-Co represents a rare example of a Co(II) species with a coordination number different from six displaying a low-spin to high-spin spin-crossover (SCO) behavior. The experimental observations are complemented by DFT calculations.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Copper, Nickel, and Cobalt

The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

[(NHC)CoR2]: pre-catalysts for homogeneous olefin and alkyne hydrogenation

Heteroleptic, two-coordinate [M(NHC){N(SiMe3)2}] (M = Co, Fe) complexes: synthesis, reactivity and magnetism rationalized by an unexpected metal oxidation state

The linear, two-coordinate and isostructural heteroleptic [M(IPr){N(SiMe₃)₂}] (IPr = 1,3-bis(diisopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene), formally M^I complexes (M = Co, 3; Fe, 4) were obtained by the reduction of [M(IPr)Cl{N(SiMe₃)₂}] with KC₈, or [Co(IPr){N(SiMe₃)₂}₂] with mes*PH₂, mes* = 2,4,6-tBu₃C₆H₂. The magnetism of 3 and 4 implies Co^II and Fe^II centres coupled to one ligand-delocalized electron, in line with XPS and XANES data; the ac susceptibility of 4 detected a pronounced frequency dependence due to slow magnetization relaxation. Reduction of [Fe(IPr)Cl{N(SiMe₃)₂}] with excess KC₈ in toluene gave the heteronuclear 'inverse-sandwich' Fe-K complex 7, featuring η⁶-toluene sandwiched between one Fe⁰ and one K⁺ centre.

Magnetic circular dichroism and density functional theory studies of electronic structure and bonding in cobalt(ii)–N-heterocyclic carbene complexes

The combination of simple cobalt salts and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands has been highly effective in C–H functionalization, hydroarylation and cross-coupling catalysis, though displaying a strong dependence on the identity of the NHC ligand.

Facile routes to abnormal-NHC-cobalt(ii) complexes

Deprotonation of 1 with Co{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂ affords aNHC-Co(ii) complex 2, whereas carbene transfer from 3 to Co{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂ enables access to complex 4.

Preparation and reactivity of a Ru(0) phosphino-carbene complex

The reaction of the phosphino-carbene MeNC3H2NPtBu2 with RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)3 is shown to give facile access to the Ru(0) species (MeNC3H2NPtBu2)Ru(CO)(PPh3)2 (). This species undergoes oxidative addition of H2 and silanes to give (MeNC3H2NPtBu2)RuH2(CO)(PPh3)2, (MeNC3H2NPtBu2)Ru H(SiRPh2)(CO)(PPh3) (R = Ph 5, H 6) and (MeNC3H2NPtBu2) RuH(PhSi(SCH2CH2)2O)(CO)(PPh3) .

Transition metal (Rh and Fe) complexes and main-group (Se and B) adducts with N,N′-diphosphanyl NHC ligands: a study of stereoelectronic properties

The reactions ofN,N′-bis(di-tert-butylphosphanyl)-imidazole-2-ylidene (PCNHCP) with [Rh(μ-Cl)(COD)]₂, [Rh(μ-Cl)(CO)₂]₂, [Fe₄Cl₈(THF)₆], elemental Se and [(C₆F₅)BO]₃, have been investigated to evaluate the stereoelectronic properties of this hybrid ligand.
