The five-coordinate
hydrido complex [IrH(OTf)(PSiP)]
(1) catalytically transforms 2-butyne into a mixture
of its isomer
1,3-butadiene, and [3]dendralene and linear hexatriene dimerization
products: (E)-4-methyl-3-methylene-1,4-hexadiene
and (3Z)-3,4-dimethyl-1,3,5-hexatriene, respectively.
Under the conditions of the catalytic reaction, benzene, and 363 K,
the hexatriene further undergoes thermal electrocyclization into 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexadiene.
The reactions between 1 and the alkyne substrate allow
isolation or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) observation of catalyst
resting states and possible reaction intermediates, including complexes
with the former PSiP pincer ligands disassembled into PSi and PC chelates,
and species coordinating allyl or carbene fragments en route to products.
The density functional theory (DFT) calculations guided by these experimental
observations disclose competing mechanisms for C–H bond elaboration
that move H atoms either classically, as hydrides, or as protons transported
by the triflate. This latter role of triflate, previously recognized
only for more basic anions such as carboxylates, is discussed to result
from combining the unfavorable charge separation in the nonpolar solvent
and the low electronic demand from the metal to the anion at coordination
positions trans to silicon. Triflate deprotonation of methyl groups
is key to release highly coordinating diene products from stable allyl
intermediates, thus enabling catalytic cycling.

Abstract
The synthesis of cyclometalated osmium complexes is usually more complicated than of other transition metals such as Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, where cyclometalation reactions readily occur via direct activation of C–H bonds. It differs also from their ruthenium analogs. Cyclometalation for osmium usually occurs under more severe conditions, in polar solvents, using specific precursors, stronger acids, or bases. Such requirements expand reaction mechanisms to electrophilic activation, transmetalation, and oxidative addition, often involving C–H bond activations. Osmacycles exhibit specific applications in homogeneous catalysis, photophysics, bioelectrocatalysis and are studied as anticancer agents. This review describes major synthetic pathways to osmacycles and related compounds and discusses their practical applications.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of halido Os(II) p-cymene complexes bearing bidentate chelating phenylazobenzothiazole (AZBTZ) ligands. Unlike the analogous phenylazopyridine (AZPY) complexes, AZBTZ-NMe2 is capable of both N,N-coordination to Os(II) and cyclometalation to form N,C-coordinated species. N,C-Coordination occurs via an azo nitrogen and an ortho carbon on the aniline ring, as identified by 1H NMR and X-ray crystallography of [Os(p-cym)(N,N-AZBTZ-NMe2)Cl]PF6 (1a), [Os(p-cym)(N,N-AZBTZ-NMe2)Br]PF6 (2a), [Os(p-cym)(N,C-AZBTZ-NMe2)Br] (2b), and [Os(p-cym)(N,C-AZBTZ-NMe2)I] (3b). The N,C-coordinated species is more stable and is not readily converted to the N,N-coordinated complex. Analysis of the crystal structures suggests that their formation is influenced by steric interactions between the p-cym and AZBTZ-NMe2 ligands: in particular, larger monodentate halide ligands favor N,C-coordination. The complexes [Os(p-cym)(N,N-Me2-AZBTZ-NH2)Cl]PF6 (4) and [Os(p-cym)(N,N-Me2-AZBTZ-NH2)I]PF6 (5) were synthesized with methyl groups blocking the ortho positions on the aniline ring, forcing an N,N-coordination geometry. 1H NMR NOE experiments confirmed hindered rotation of the arene ligand and steric crowding around the metal center. Complex 2b exhibited unexpected behavior under acidic conditions, involving regiospecific deuteration of the aniline ring at the meta position, as observed by 1H NMR and high-resolution ESI-MS. Deuterium exchange occurs only under acidic conditions, suggesting an associative mechanism. The calculated partial charges on 2b show that the meta carbon is significantly more negatively charged, which may account for the regiospecificity of deuterium exchange.

Abstract
Cyclometallation of 8-methylquinoline and 2-(dimethylamino)-pyridine in an iridium-based pincer complex is described. The C-H activation of 2-(dimethylamino)pyridine is not chelation assisted, which has not been described before for Csp3 -H bonds in cyclometallation reactions. The mechanism of the cyclometallation of 2-(dimethylamino)pyridine was studied by DFT calculations and kinetic measurements.

Abstract
The efficient synthesis of mono- and dinuclear Os(IV) bipyridyl complexes is reported. These compounds show a two-step oxidation process leading to notable structural changes, which are reflected in their emission properties. During the second oxidation process a tetracation with a hydride-dihydrogen structure (instead of a trihydride) is formed. This results in a significant bathochromic shift of the emission band, accompanied by a moderate increase in intensity.

Abstract
Mild electrophilic C(sp2)-H cyclometalation of 2-phenylpyridine and N,N-dimethylbenzylamine by the chloro-bridged osmium(II) dimer [OsCl(micro-Cl)(eta6-C6H6)]2 in acetonitrile affords cyclometalated pseudotetrahedral OsII complexes [Os(C approximately N)(eta6-C6H6)(NCMe)]PF6 (C approximately N=o-C6H4py-kappa C,N (2) and o-C6H4CH2NMe2-kappa C,N (5), respectively) in good to excellent yields. The cyclometalation reactions are super sensitive to the nature of an external base. Sodium hydroxide is essential for cyclometalation of 2-phenylpyridine, but NaOH retards metalation of N,N-dimethylbenzylamine, the tertiary amine being self-sufficient as a base. Further reactions of compounds 2 and 5 with 1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-bipyridine (N approximately N) lead to the substitution of the eta6-bound benzene to produce octahedral species [Os(C approximately N)(N approximately N)(NCMe)2]PF6 or [Os(C approximately N)(N approximately N)2]PF6 in MeCN or MeOH as solvent, respectively. The cis configuration of the MeCN ligands in [Os(C approximately N)(phen)(NCMe)2]PF6 has been confirmed by an X-ray crystallographic study. Electrochemical investigation of the octahedral osma(II)cycles by cyclic voltammetry showed a pseudoreversible MIII/II redox feature at (-50)-(+109) and 190-300 mV versus Ag/AgCl in water and MeCN, respectively. As a possible application of the compounds, a rapid electron exchange between the reduced active site of glucose oxidase enzyme from Aspergillus niger and the electrochemically generated OsIII species has been demonstrated.
