Epidemic investigations within an arm's reach - role of google maps during an epidemic outbreak

Epidemics such as novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) can be contained and the rate of infection reduced by public health measures such as epidemiologic inquiries and social distancing. Epidemiologic inquiry requires resources and time which may not be available or reduced when the outbreak is excessive. We evaluated the use of Google Maps Timeline (GMTL) for creating spatial epidemiologic timelines. The study compares locations, routes, and means of transport between GMTL and user recall for 17 suitable users who were recruited during March 2020. They were interviewed about their timeline using the Timeline Follow-Back (TLFB) method which was then compared to their GMTL and discrepancies between both methods were addressed. Interviewer conclusions were divided into categories: (1) participant recalled, (2) no recall (until shown). Categories were subdivided by GMTL accuracy: [a] GMTL accurate, [b] GMTL inaccurate, [c] GMTL data missing. A total of 362 locations were compared. Participants recalled 322 (88.95% SD = 8.55) locations compared with 40 (11.05%, SD = 2.05) locations not recalled. There were 304 locations found accurate on GMTL (83.98%, SD = 9.49), 29 (8.01%, SD = 1.11) inaccurate locations, and 29 (8.01%, SD = 0.54) missing locations. The total discrepancy between GMTL and TLFB recall was 95 cases (26.24%, SD = 3.25). Despite variations between users, Google Maps with GMTL technology may be useful in identifying potentially exposed individuals in a pandemic. It is especially useful when resources are limited. Further research is required with a larger number of users who are undergoing a real epidemiologic investigation to corroborate findings and establish further recommendations.

Psychometric Evaluation of the Timeline Followback for Exercise among College Students

OBJECTIVES: Two separate studies assessed the psychometric properties of a retrospective behavioral measure adapted for exercise called the Timeline Followback for Exercise (TLFB-E). Study one examined criterion, convergent, and predictive validity. Study two examined test-retest reliability. METHODS: Study one participants (N = 66) were college students 20.0 ± 1.4yr. Validity of frequency, intensity, time, and type (FITT) of exercise as assessed on the TLFB-E was examined using Pearson r correlations with accelerometers, weekly exercise contracts between participants and researchers, question four of the College Alumni Questionnaire, and a health-related physical fitness battery. Study two participants were a different sample (N = 40) of college students 18.63 ± 1.0yr. Pearson r correlations determined reliability of the TLFB-E for exercise frequency, intensity, and time between two interviews separated by one month. Kappa statistic determined reliability of the TLFB-E for type of exercise. RESULTS: The TLFB-E displayed evidence of criterion validity when compared to accelerometers (r = .35 to .39) and evidence of convergent validity when compared to weekly exercise contracts (r = .65 to .80) and question four of the College Alumni Questionnaire (r = .06 to .75). The TLFB-E displayed evidence of modest to adequate test-retest reliability (r = .79 to .97) for exercise frequency, intensity, and time and moderate Kappa (k = .49) for exercise type. CONCLUSIONS: The TLFB-E produces evidence of reliable and valid scores among college students and improves upon other self-report, retrospective questionnaires by enabling daily collection of exercise FITT over a specified time period.

Gender Differences in Depression: Assessing Mediational Effects of Overt Behaviors and Environmental Reward through Daily Diary Monitoring

Gender differences in the prevalence of depression are well documented. To further explore the relation between gender and depression, this study used daily diaries to examine gender differences within thirteen behavioral domains and whether differential frequency of overt behaviors and environmental reward mediated the relationship between gender and depression severity. The sample included 82 undergraduate students [66% females; 84% Caucasian; Mean age = 20.2 years]. Overall, females engaged in a significantly greater breadth of behavioral domains and reported a higher level of environmental reward. Females spent more time in the domains of health/hygiene, spiritual activities, and eating with others. Males spent more time in the domains of physical activity, sexual activity, and hobbies and recreational experiences. Females found social activities, passive/sedentary behaviors, eating with others, and engagement in "other" activities more rewarding. Gender had a significant direct effect on depression severity, with females reporting increased depression. This effect was attenuated by the mediator (total environmental reward) such that to the extent females exhibited increased environmental reward, the gender effect on depression was attenuated. These data support behavioral models of depression, indicate increased reinforcement sensitivity among females, and have clinical relevance in the context of assessment and behavioral activation interventions for depression.

Behavioral theory of depression: reinforcement as a mediating variable between avoidance and depression

Behavioral theory posits that certain environmental changes and avoidant behaviors inhibit individuals from experiencing environmental reward and reinforcement and subsequently leads to the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms. Using self-report and behavioral (daily diary) indices of environmental reward as proxy measures for positive reinforcement, this investigation examined whether environmental reward mediated the relationship between avoidance and depression. When controlling for anxiety, both indices of environmental reward significantly mediated the relationships of depression with cognitive, behavioral and total avoidance. Post-hoc mediation analyses were conducted to examine potential gender differences. Self-reported environmental reward significantly mediated the relationship between avoidance and depression across both genders. Among females, however, daily diary-measured reward only mediated the relation between cognitive avoidance and depression. In males daily diary reward was a mediator with all three forms of avoidance and depression. This investigation provides initial support for reinforcement as a significant mediator between avoidance and depression and further highlights the relevance of avoidance and reinforcement in behavioral conceptualizations of depression.

Suicide Attempt Self-Injury Interview (SASII): development, reliability, and validity of a scale to assess suicide attempts and intentional self-injury

The authors describe the development of the Suicide Attempt Self-Injury Interview (SASII), an instrument designed to assess the factors involved in nonfatal suicide attempts and intentional self-injury. Using 4 cohorts of participants, authors generated SASII items and evaluated them with factor and content analyses and internal consistency statistics. The final measure was assessed for reliability and validity with collateral measures. The SASII assesses variables related to method, lethality and impulsivity of the act, likelihood of rescue, suicide intent or ambivalence and other motivations, consequences, and habitual self-injury. The SASII was found to have very good interrater reliability and adequate validity.

An investigation into the effectiveness of bibliotherapy and minimal contact interventions in the treatment of panic attacks

The present study investigated the effectiveness of bibliotherapy and minimal therapist-contact interventions in the treatment of panic attacks. Individuals were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (1) bibliotherapy alone (BT); (2) bibliotherapy plus phone contact (BT+PC); or (3) phone contact alone (PC). Assessment (pre- and post-treatment) and treatment (8 weeks in duration) were conducted via mail and phone. Individuals receiving BT and BT+PC exhibited significant reductions from pre- to post-treatment on panic cognitions and fear of having a panic attack. Individuals receiving BT+PC exhibited significant reductions from pre- to post-treatment on panic symptoms and avoidance. In addition, individuals in the BT and BT+PC groups were more likely to exhibit clinically significant improvement on most dependent measures relative to PC alone. On some measures, individuals in the BT+PC group did clinically better than individuals in the BT group. Results of the present study also suggest that diagnosis may play some role in outcome.

Validation of the timeline follow-back in the assessment of adolescent smoking

The timeline follow-back instrument (TLFB) is a valid and reliable method of quantifying alcohol use patterns. The use of this instrument has been expanded to assess other behaviors, such as drug use, sexual behavior, binge eating, and panic attacks. Some evidence for the validity and reliability of this assessment instrument has emerged in the area of adult smoking. However, to date, there is no published evidence of its reliability and validity in the assessment of adolescent smoking. The purpose of this study is to present early evidence of the utility of the TLFB to collect information on adolescent smoking behavior. Through secondary data analysis of four studies on adolescent smokers, we examined the associations between the TLFB and measures of dependence, smoking history, respiratory symptoms, and saliva cotinine. Moreover, we examined the stability of the TLFB data across two 15-day time periods. Results provide preliminary evidence of the validity and reliability of the TLFB in the assessment of adolescent smoking. In particular, the TLFB instrument offered important data on the heterogeneity of adolescent smoking patterns beyond a global measure of cigarettes per day, and the reduction of digit bias. Implications of these findings for the assessment of adolescent smoking are discussed.

The use of daily diaries to assess the relations among mood state, overt behavior, and reward value of activities

Recent data has sparked renewed interest in behavioral treatments for depression; however several fundamental questions remain regarding the mechanisms of such approaches. To this end, the current study directly tested the assumption that non-clinical mildly depressed individuals receive less response-contingent positive reinforcement than non-depressed individuals, indicated by less engagement in behaviors perceived as rewarding in terms of both immediate pleasure and potential for these behaviors to result in more distal rewards. The data presented support this assumption and provide support for the role of reinforcement-based strategies such as behavioral activation in the treatment of depression.
