Quantitative and qualitative sensing techniques for biogenic volatile organic compounds and their oxidation products

The physiological production mechanisms of some of the organics in plants, commonly known as biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), have been known for more than a century. Some BVOCs are emitted to the atmosphere and play a significant role in tropospheric photochemistry especially in ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) productions as a result of interplays between BVOCs and atmospheric radicals such as hydroxyl radical (OH), ozone (O3) and NOX (NO + NO2). These findings have been drawn from comprehensive analysis of numerous field and laboratory studies that have characterized the ambient distribution of BVOCs and their oxidation products, and reaction kinetics between BVOCs and atmospheric oxidants. These investigations are limited by the capacity for identifying and quantifying these compounds. This review highlights the major analytical techniques that have been used to observe BVOCs and their oxidation products such as gas chromatography, mass spectrometry with hard and soft ionization methods, and optical techniques from laser induced fluorescence (LIF) to remote sensing. In addition, we discuss how new analytical techniques can advance our understanding of BVOC photochemical processes. The principles, advantages, and drawbacks of the analytical techniques are discussed along with specific examples of how the techniques were applied in field and laboratory measurements. Since a number of thorough review papers for each specific analytical technique are available, readers are referred to these publications rather than providing thorough descriptions of each technique. Therefore, the aim of this review is for readers to grasp the advantages and disadvantages of various sensing techniques for BVOCs and their oxidation products and to provide guidance for choosing the optimal technique for a specific research task.

Radical quantum yields from formaldehyde photolysis in the 30,400-32,890 cm(-1) (304-329 nm) spectral region: detection of radical photoproducts using pulsed laser photolysis-pulsed laser induced fluorescence

The relative quantum yield for the production of radical products, H + HCO, from the UV photolysis of formaldehyde (HCHO) has been measured using a pulsed laser photolysis–pulsed laser induced fluorescence (PLP–PLIF) technique across the 30,400–32,890 cm(–1) (304–329 nm) spectral region of the Ã(1)A2–X̃(1)A1 electronic transition. The photolysis laser had a bandwidth of 0.09 cm(–1), which is slightly broader than the Doppler width of a rotational line of formaldehyde at 300 K (0.07 cm(–1)), and the yield spectrum shows detailed rotational structure. The H and HCO photofragments were monitored using LIF of the OH radical as a spectroscopic marker. The OH radicals were produced by rapid reaction of the H and HCO photofragments with NO2. This technique produced an “action” spectrum that at any photolysis wavelength is the product of the H + HCO radical quantum yield and HCHO absorption cross section at the photolysis wavelength and is a relative measurement. Using the HCHO absorption cross section previously obtained in this laboratory, the relative quantum yield was determined two different ways. One produced band specific yields, and the other produced yields averaged over each 100 cm(–1). Yields were normalized to a value of 0.69 at 31,750 cm(–1) based on the current recommendation of Sander et al. (Sander, S. P.; Abbatt, J.; Barker, J. R.; Burkholder, J. B.; Friedl, R. R.; Golden, D. M.; Huie, R. E.; Kolb, C. E.; Kurylo, M. J.; Moortgat, G. K.; et al. Chemical Kinetics and Photochemical Data for Use in Atmospheric Studies, Evaluation No. 17; Jet Propulsion Laboratory: Pasadena, CA, USA, 2011). The resulting radical quantum yields agree well with previous experimental studies and the current JPL recommendation but show greater wavelength dependent structure. A significant decrease in the quantum yield was observed for the 5(0)(1) + 1(0)(1)4(0)(1) combination band centered at 31,125 cm(–1). This band has a low absorption cross section and has little impact on the calculated atmospheric photodissociation rate but is a further indication of the complexity of HCHO photodissociation dynamics.

A tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer for formaldehyde atmospheric measurements validated by simulation chamber instrumentation

A tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer (TDLAS) for formaldehyde atmospheric measurements has been set up and validated through comparison experiments with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) in a simulation chamber. Formaldehyde was generated in situ in the chamber from reaction of ethene with ozone. Three HCHO ro-vibrational line intensities (at 2909.71, 2912.09 and 2914.46 cm(-1)) possibly used by TDLAS were calibrated by FT-IR spectra simultaneously recorded in the 1600-3200 cm(-1) domain during ethene ozonolysis, enabling the on-line deduction of the varying concentration for HCHO in formation. The experimental line intensities values inferred confirmed the calculated ones from the updated HITRAN database. In addition, the feasibility of stratospheric in situ HCHO measurements using the 2912.09 cm(-1) line was demonstrated. The TDLAS performances were also assessed, leading to a 2sigma detection limit of 88 ppt in volume mixing ratio with a response time of 60 sec at 30 Torr and 294 K for 112 m optical path. As part of this work, the room-temperature rate constant of this reaction and the HCHO formation yield were found to be in excellent agreement with the compiled literature data.

A laser induced fluorescence-based instrument for in-situ measurements of atmospheric formaldehyde

Direct, in situ detection of gas phase formaldehyde (HCHO) via laser induced fluorescence in a White-type multipass cell is demonstrated with a (3sigma) limit of detection of approximately 0.051 parts per billion by volume in a 1 s sampling time. Calibration is performed in two ways: using permeation tubes and with air bubbled through an aqueous solution of HCHO. The concentration of HCHO output from the bubbler is measured by cavity ring-down spectroscopy. Measurement of ambient HCHO is carried out at the University of Wisconsin, Madison for a period of several days.
