High-pressure thermal conductivity and compressional velocity of NaCl in B1 and B2 phase

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is an important, commonly used pressure medium and pressure calibrant in diamond-anvil cell (DAC) experiments. Its thermal conductivity at high pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions is a critical parameter to model heat conduction and temperature distribution within an NaCl-loaded DAC. Here we couple ultrafast optical pump-probe methods with the DAC to study thermal conductivity and compressional velocity of NaCl in B1 and B2 phase to 66 GPa at room temperature. Using an externally-heated DAC, we further show that thermal conductivity of NaCl-B1 phase follows a typical T⁻¹ dependence. The high P–T thermal conductivity of NaCl enables us to confirm the validity of Leibfried-Schlömann equation, a commonly used model for the P–T dependence of thermal conductivity, over a large compression range (~ 35% volume compression in NaCl-B1 phase, followed by ~ 20% compression in the polymorphic B2 phase). The compressional velocities of NaCl-B1 and B2 phase both scale approximately linearly with density, indicating the applicability of Birch’s law to NaCl within the density range we study. Our findings offer critical insights into the dominant physical mechanism of phonon transport in NaCl, as well as important data that significantly enhance the accuracy of modeling the spatiotemporal evolution of temperature within an NaCl-loaded DAC.

Sound velocities of Fe and Fe-Si alloy in the Earth's core

Compressional wave velocity-density (V(P)--ρ) relations of candidate Fe alloys at relevant pressure-temperature conditions of the Earth's core are critically needed to evaluate the composition, seismic signatures, and geodynamics of the planet's remotest region. Specifically, comparison between seismic V(P)--ρ profiles of the core and candidate Fe alloys provides first-order information on the amount and type of potential light elements--including H, C, O, Si, and/or S-needed to compensate the density deficit of the core. To address this issue, here we have surveyed and analyzed the literature results in conjunction with newly measured V(P)--ρ results of hexagonal closest-packed (hcp) Fe and hcp-Fe(0.85)Si(0.15) alloy using in situ high-energy resolution inelastic X-ray scattering and X-ray diffraction. The nature of the Fe-Si alloy where Si is readily soluble in Fe represents an ideal solid-solution case to better understand the light-element alloying effects. Our results show that high temperature significantly decreases the V(P) of hcp-Fe at high pressures, and the Fe-Si alloy exhibits similar high-pressure V(P)--ρ behavior to hcp-Fe via a constant density offset. These V(P)--ρ data at a given temperature can be better described by an empirical power-law function with a concave behavior at higher densities than with a linear approximation. Our new datasets, together with literature results, allow us to build new V(P)--ρ models of Fe alloys in order to determine the chemical composition of the core. Our models show that the V(P)--ρ profile of Fe with 8 wt % Si at 6,000 K matches well with the Preliminary Reference Earth Model of the inner core.

A High-Pressure Test of Birch's Law

The compressional wave velocities of polycrystalline NaCl and KCl have been measured to over 17 gigapascals, with the use of Brillouin scattering and the diamond anvil cell. This pressure corresponds to 40% compression for NaCl and 60% compression for KCl (including the volume change across the B1-B2 transition). The data obey Birch's Law, which predicts that the velocity of each material is linear with density, except across the B1-B2 phase transition in KCl. This deviation from Birch's Law can be rationalized in terms of an interatomic potential model wherein the vibrational frequencies of the nearest neighbor bonds decrease when going to the eight-coordinated B2 structure from the six-coordinated B1 structure.

Sound Velocities of Hot Dense Iron: Birch's Law Revisited

Sound velocities of hexagonal close-packed iron (hcp-Fe) were measured at pressures up to 73 gigapascals and at temperatures up to 1700 kelvin with nuclear inelastic x-ray scattering in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. The compressional-wave velocities (VP) and shear-wave velocities (VS) of hcp-Fe decreased significantly with increasing temperature under moderately high pressures. VP and VS under high pressures and temperatures thus cannot be fitted to a linear relation, Birch's law, which has been used to extrapolate measured sound velocities to densities of iron in Earth's interior. This result means that there are more light elements in Earth's core than have been inferred from linear extrapolation at room temperature.
