Abstract
PURPOSE Associations between age at menarche and myopia have been observed in studies that included older women. Furthermore, pregnancy-related hormone surges in young women are associated with short-term changes in refractive error, although the long-term effects are less known. This study explored associations of age at menarche and parity with refractive error and ocular biometry in young women, and the relationship between age at menarche and refractive error in middle-aged adults for comparison. METHODS Community-based young women underwent eye examinations at 20 and 28 years old. Information on age at menarche and parity were collected prospectively. The older cohort underwent an eye examination and information on age at menarche was self-reported retrospectively. Cross-sectional associations between age at menarche and myopia were explored in both cohorts. Associations between parity and 8-year longitudinal change in refractive error measures were explored in the young cohort. RESULTS The cross-sectional analyses comprised 429 young (age 18-22) and 1,818 older (age 46-69) women. No associations were found between age at menarche and myopia or ocular biometry measures in either cohort. The longitudinal analysis (n = 269 women) revealed that for each pregnancy carried to full term, there rate of lens thickening increased by 0.004 mm/year (95% CI = 0.002-0.007). No other associations between parity and refractive error or ocular biometry were found. CONCLUSION There is no association between age at menarche and myopia or its related measures. While pregnancy was associated with thicker lens in the long term, there is no lasting effect on refractive error.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate factors influencing stabilisation of myopia in the Singapore Cohort of Risk factors for Myopia. METHODS We evaluated the longitudinal natural history of 424 myopic participants from 1999 to 2022. The outcome was the change in myopia from the adolescence follow-up visit (aged 12-19 years) to the adulthood follow-up visit (aged 26-33 years). Association of predictive factors, including baseline spherical error, gender, ethnicity, parental myopia, time outdoor, near work and age at adolescence, was examined with the dichotomous outcome of adult myopia progression (≤ -1.00 dioptres (D) over 10 years) using multiple logistic regression and progression in linear regression models. RESULTS For the primary outcome, the mean rate of progression of the outcome was found to be -0.04±0.09 D per year from the adolescent to the adulthood follow-up visits. 82.3% (95% CI 78.3% to 85.8%) had myopia stabilisation, with progression of less than 1.00 D over 10 years while 61.3% (95% CI 56.5% to 66.0%) of the subjects had progression of less than 0.50 D. In logistic regression models, both male gender (p=0.035) and non-Chinese ethnicity (p=0.032) were more likely to achieve myopia stabilisation while in linear multivariate regression models, males had a significantly slower degree of myopia progression (p=0.021). CONCLUSION 5 in 6 Singaporean young adults had myopia stabilisation. Male gender is 2 times and non-Chinese ethnicities are 2.5 times more likely to achieve myopia stabilisation. However, a proportion of myopes continue to exhibit a clinically significant degree of progression in adulthood.

Abstract
More than 25 years of experience with refractive surgery techniques (since the FDA [Food and Drug Administration] of the United States approved the use of the excimer laser in the remodeling of the cornea in 1995), added to the technological advances in ophthalmology (femtosecond laser, topography-guided ablation, anterior segment imaging systems) and increased understanding of refractive errors, higher order aberrations, and corneal biomechanics make corneal laser refractive surgery a safe method and effective for the correction of these defects. However, to date, there are still certain circumstances that represent a contraindication for its application, in addition to others that could be associated with complications, and that must be carefully analyzed. This review analyzes the current contraindications for laser corneal refractive surgery listed in the Preferred Practice Protocols (PPPs) of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Spanish Ophthalmology Society. These protocols are based on the best scientific evidence currently available and allow clear recommendations to be drawn, improving the safety profile of these techniques. Contraindications can be differentiated into relative or absolute; among the latter are: age less than 18 years, the absence of refractive stability and the existence of certain ocular pathologies (including certain corneal dystrophies, keratoconus, poorly controlled dry eye) or systemic pathologies (active autoimmune processes or poorly controlled diabetes mellitus). Other circumstances such as the use of certain drugs (amiodarone, isotretinoin), extreme values of mean central keratometry and pachymetry, history of previous uveitis or glaucoma, pregnancy and lactation, are considered relative contraindications according to the PPPs. However, there are studies that demonstrate the safety of refractive surgery in some of these cases.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although corneal refractive surgery is contraindicated during pregnancy, some patients are unaware that they are pregnant when they undergo surgery. Our objectives were to determine the functional outcomes of corneal refractive surgery during pregnancy and to compare the results with those of nonpregnant women. METHODS We performed a multicenter, retrospective, interventional case series review of patients who were pregnant and who underwent laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or surface ablation (photorefractive keratectomy, PRK) from September 11, 2002 to December 12, 2020 (group 1, n=82 eyes). Patients were included consecutively. Findings were compared with those of nonpregnant women (group 2, n=164 eyes). Functional (visual and refractive) outcomes are described. Follow-up was at least 550 days (control group, median [IQR], 990 days [715-1496]; study group, 895 days [709-1310]). The setting was Clínica Baviera, Spain, (AIER Eye Hospital Group). RESULTS A statistically significant difference was found between the groups in terms of efficacy index (EI). No complications of pregnancy or labor were reported. Similarly, a search of medical records revealed no adverse effects in the infants. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case series on pregnancy and refractive surgery. We do not recommend performing LASIK or surface ablation on pregnant women. Our objective in the present study was to present relevant scientific data obtained from women who underwent refractive surgery while unaware that they were pregnant.

Abstract
Background: Pregnancy-induced changes in the physiological responses during the gestational period can affect the eye. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pregnancy on visual, refractive, vergence, and accommodative status. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, twenty-five healthy pregnant women with a mean age of 29±3.1 were examined. All of the subjects underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations, including anterior segment and fundus examinations and tonometry. Refractive error was determined in each trimester using Autokeratometer. Furthermore, near the point of convergence (NPC), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and near the point of accommodation (NPA) were measured. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 22. To compare the data during pregnancy, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed. Results: During pregnancy, in the right and left eye, spherical equivalent (SE) had a myopic shift from -0.13 to -0.35 D and +0.096 to -0.23 D, respectively (p=0.049 and p=0.020, respectively). Also, in the right and left eyes BCVA significantly decreased from -0.13 to 0.00 and -0.14 to 0.00 LogMAR, respectively (p=0.039 and p=0.045, respectively). NPA and NPC did not change statistically significantly during pregnancy (p=0.385, and p=0.801, respectively). Conclusion: Due to the unstable hormonal status, a myopic shift and decrease in BCVA occur during pregnancy. So, any change in their spectacle prescription, fitting of contact lenses, performing refractive surgeries, etc., during this period should be postponed.

Abstract
Myopia tends to develop and progress fastest during childhood, and the age of stabilization has been reported to be 15-16 years old. Thus, most studies on myopia have centered on children. Data on the refractive error profile in young adulthood - a time in life when myopia is thought to have stabilized and refractive error is unaffected by age-related pathology such as cataract - are limited. The Raine Study has been following a community-based cohort of young adults representative of the general Western Australia population since their prenatal periods in 1989-1991, with eye examinations performed when participants were 20 and 28 years old. At 20 years old, prevalence of myopia in the cohort was 25.8%. Using long-term trajectory of serum vitamin D levels and conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) area to objectively quantify sun exposure, the Raine Study confirmed a negative relationship between time spent outdoors and myopia prevalence. However, prospective studies are required to determine the amount of CUVAF area or serum vitamin D levels associated with time duration. Combining data from the Raine Study and several other cohorts, Mendelian randomization studies have confirmed a link between myopia and a genetic predisposition toward higher education. Several novel potential associations of myopia or ocular biometry were investigated, including fetal growth trajectory, which was found to be significantly associated with corneal curvature at 20 years. By age 28, myopia prevalence had increased to 33.2%. Between 20 and 28 years old, myopia progressed and axial length elongated, on average, by -0.041D/year and 0.02 mm/year, respectively. Smaller CUVAF area at follow-up, female sex, and parental myopia were significant risk factors for myopia incidence and progression between 20 and 28 years. Given the limited research in young adults, further investigations are warranted to confirm the Raine Study findings, as well as identify novel genetic or environmental factors of myopia incidence and progression in this age group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myopia is a highly prevalent disorder, and one of the first causes of blindness. In turn, alcohol consumption has been shown to be a risk factor for many diseases and a main contributor to the global burden of disease. However, no studies have investigated the relationship between alcohol intake and myopia. Our aim was to prospectively assess the association between alcohol intake and the development or progression of myopia. METHODS In a Spanish dynamic prospective cohort (the SUN Project) we assessed 15,642 university graduates, recruited between 1999 and 2018 and followed up biennially through mailed questionnaires. Alcohol intake was assessed with a validated 136-item food frequency questionnaire. Development or progression of myopia was collected in subsequent questionnaires during follow-up every two years. RESULTS Alcohol intake was linearly and significantly associated with a higher risk of myopia development or progression: the OR for 10-year incidence/progression of myopia was 1.05, 95% CI 1.01-1.09 per each 10-grams increase in alcohol intake. CONCLUSIONS Alcohol consumption might lead to the development or progression of myopia, although confirmation is needed for the mechanisms through which this association may occur, thus further research is needed to verify these findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The aim of this study was to summarize common eye changes that may occur during pregnancy, and how pregnancy may affect preexisting eye conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Challenges and complexities surrounding the treatment of these eye conditions during pregnancy are also highlighted. RECENT FINDINGS Refractive changes are common and may persist in the postpartum in patients with keratoconus. Although new medical and surgical glaucoma treatments are available, their safety in pregnancy is unknown. Limited use of topical and systemic glaucoma therapies is recommended, with a preference for selective laser trabeculoplasty as first line treatment in appropriate cases. The impact of pregnancy on diabetic retinopathy remains unclear. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents are first-line treatment for sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy, their effect on the developing foetus remains unknown and are therefore best avoided in the first and second trimesters. Noninfectious uveitis tends to become less active during pregnancy, allowing the potential tapering of systemic therapy and the use of local topical or injected corticosteroid treatment for active disease as required. SUMMARY Significant changes can occur to the eye during pregnancy, wherein the optimal treatment for many ocular conditions remains uncertain, highlighting the need for further research to develop clear recommendations that best balance the need to preserve the mother's sight, and the health of the developing foetus. The need for preconception planning, and collaborative multidisciplinary care between the obstetrician, physician, ophthalmologist and paediatrician is paramount.

Abstract
This systematic review reported the outcomes of laser corneal refractive surgery in pregnant or breastfeeding patients. This study was performed by searching in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, on June 15, 2020. Included were 128 eyes from a total of 64 patients, with the mean maximum follow-up was 39.2 ± 36.14 months. Time from surgery to complication ranged from 1 to 67 months, with a mean value of 23.42 ± 22.23 months. Photorefractive keratectomy and laser in situ keratomileusis surgery seem to be stable procedures that are not modified during pregnancy and safe to complete during breastfeeding. Nevertheless, the lack of weight prospective research avoids having a greater certainty on this matter, and because of transitory nature of pregnancy and breastfeeding, it could still be contemplated that surgery risk outweigh the benefits. Additional investigation will be necessary to clarify these issues.

Abstract
High myopia and the subsequent degenerative changes of the retina, choroid, and sclera, known as myopic maculopathy (MM), are a serious visual problem in many Asian countries, and are beginning to be so in the south of Europe, especially in the Mediterranean. It is therefore necessary to carry out genetic and environmental studies to determine the possible causes of this disease. This study aims to verify if the genetic factors that have been most related to Asian populations are also associated in two Spanish cohorts. Eight SNPs from six genes (PAX6, SCO2, CCDC102B, BLID, chromosome 15q14, and COL8A1) along with demographic, ophthalmic and environmental factors were analysed in two cohorts from a total of 365 highly myopic subjects and 177 control subjects. The genetic analysis showed that COL8A1 SNP rs13095226 was associated with the development of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and also seems to play an important role in the increase of axial length. The SNP rs634990 of chromosome 15q14 also showed a significant association with MM, although this was lost after the Bonferroni correction. Additional demographic and environmental factors, namely age, sex, smoking status, and pregnancy history, were also found to be associated with MM and CNV in this population.

Abstract
Although myopia has been largely ignored among the elderly population, there is an increased risk of myopia with advancing age. Ambient air pollution is one potential contributor to vision impairments, but few epidemiological studies have demonstrated such an association. This cross-sectional survey collected the information of 33,626 subjects aged ≥50 years in six developing countries during 2007-2010. Myopia was identified based on questions related to symptoms of myopia. The annual concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) were estimated with the satellite data and chemical transport model. We examined the associations between the two pollutants and myopia using mixed-effect Poisson regression models with robust variance estimation (sandwich estimation). We observed J-shaped associations between the two pollutants and myopia, and identified 12 and 54 μg/m3 as the threshold concentrations. The adjusted prevalence ratio was 1.12 (95% CI: 1.05, 1.21) and 1.26 (95% CI: 1.14, 1.38) for each standard deviation (SD) increase in PM2.5 and O3 concentrations above their threshold, respectively. In addition, the interaction analysis suggested a synergistic interaction of these two pollutants on myopia in the additive model, with a synergistic index of 1.81 (Bootstrapping 95% CI: 0.92, 4.94). Our results indicate that long-term exposures to PM2.5 and O3 might be important environmental risk factors of myopia in the elderly, and suggest that more efforts should be taken to reduce airborne PM2.5 and O3 levels to protect vision health.

Abstract
The visual system of women changes during pregnancy. Few reports have addressed the effects of pregnancy on color vision. We aimed to compare the color vision of women in the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy. Fifty women were divided into first (n=10), second (n=10), third trimester pregnancy groups (n=10), and non-pregnant group (n=20). We used the Farnsworth D15 and Lanthony desaturated D15 (D15d) tests. The hue ordering quantified the amount of error (C-index) and the chromatic selectivity of the errors (S-index). Bland-Altman analysis was applied to the hue ordering data. No difference was found for Farnsworth D15 test results obtained from the pregnant groups and the non-pregnant group (P<0.0083). For the Lanthony D15 desaturated test, the third trimester pregnant group had higher C-index and S-index than non-pregnant women and first-trimester pregnant women (P<0.0083). The Bland-Altman analysis showed that the limits of agreement increased as pregnancy advanced, and the errors were biased to the D15d test. In this study, color vision was impaired during pregnancy. Color vision evaluation could be used as an indicator of the functional status of the central vision during pregnancy.

Abstract
The body changes markedly during pregnancy; each system behaves differently from a nonpregnant state. As the eyes are the only windows to see directly what is going on in the internal environment, more and more researches have been done to explain the association between ocular changes and the physiological and pathological changes during pregnancy. The choroid is one of the critical parts of the eye, providing nutrition. And abnormal choroid may result in ocular dysfunction and visual problems. As the optical coherence tomography develops, a rapid, direct, noninvasive, and nontoxic way is available to obtain the choroid situation of pregnant women, which may explain the mechanism of pregnancy-related eye diseases. This review would summarize relevant original articles published from January 1, 2008 to December 1, 2016 to assess the changes of choroidal thickness (CT) with enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) during pregnancy. And the relationship between choroidal thickness changes and pregnancy remains uncertain. To our knowledge, this is the first review of EDI-OCT in assessing the choroidal thickness of the pregnant women.
