Abstract
Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of oxalic acid (OX) to produce glycolic acid (GA), an important building block of biodegradable polymers as well as application in various branches of chemistry, has attracted extensive attention in the industry, while it still encounters challenges of low reaction rate and selectivity. Herein, we reported a cation adsorption strategy to realize the efficient ECH of OX to GA by adsorbing Al3+ ions on an anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanosheet array, achieving 2-fold enhanced GA productivity (1.3 vs 0.65 mmol cm-2 h-1) with higher Faradaic efficiency (FE) (85 vs 69%) at -0.74 V vs RHE. We reveal that the Al3+ adatoms on TiO2 both act as electrophilic adsorption sites to enhance the carbonyl (C═O) adsorption of OX and glyoxylic acid (intermediate) and also promote the generation of reactive hydrogen (H*) on TiO2, thus promoting the reaction rate. This strategy is demonstrated effective for different carboxylic acids. Furthermore, we realized the coproduction of GA at the bipolar of a H-type cell by pairing ECH of OX (at cathode) and electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (at anode), demonstrating an economical manner with maximum electron economy.

Abstract
The reduction of carboxylic acids to the respective alcohols, in mild conditions, was achieved using [MnBr(CO)5] as the catalyst and bench stable PhSiH3 as the reducing agent. It was shown that the reaction with the earth-abundant metal catalyst could be performed either with a catalyst loading as low as 0.5 mol %, rare with the use of [MnBr(CO)5], or on a gram scale employing only 1.5 equiv of PhSiH3, the lowest amount of silane reported to date for this transformation. Kinetic data and control experiments have provided initial insight into the mechanism of the catalytic process, suggesting that it proceeds via the formation of silyl ester intermediates and ligand dissociation to generate a coordinatively unsaturated Mn(I) complex as the active species.

Abstract
The diacetate complexes trans-[Ru(κ1-OAc)2(PPh3)2(NN)] (NN = ethylenediamine (en) (1), 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine (ampy) (2), 2-(aminomethyl)pyrimidine (ampyrim) (3)) have been isolated in 76-88% yield by reaction of [Ru(κ2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] with the corresponding nitrogen ligands. The ampy-type derivatives 2 and 3 undergo isomerization to the thermodynamically most stable cationic complexes [Ru(κ1-OAc)(PPh3)2(NN)]OAc (2a and 3a) and cis-[Ru(κ1-OAc)2(PPh3)2(NN)] (2b and 3b) in methanol at RT. The trans-[Ru(κ1-OAc)2(P2)2] (P2 = dppm (4), dppe (5)) compounds have been synthesized from [Ru(κ2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] by reaction with the suitable diphosphine in toluene at 95 °C. The complex cis-[Ru(κ1-OAc)2(dppm)(ampy)](6) has been obtained from [Ru(κ2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] and dppm in toluene at reflux and reaction with ampy. The derivatives trans-[Ru(κ1-OAc)2P2(NN)] (7-16; NN = en, ampy, ampyrim, 8-aminoquinoline; P2 = dppp, dppb, dppf, (R)-BINAP) can be easily synthesized from [Ru(κ2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] with a diphosphine and treatment with the NN ligands at RT. Alternatively these compounds have been prepared from trans-[Ru(OAc)2(PPh3)2(NN)] by reaction with the diphosphine in MEK at 50 °C. The use of (R)-BINAP affords trans-[Ru(κ1-OAc)2((R)-BINAP)(NN)] (NN = ampy (11), ampyrim (15)) isolated as single stereoisomers. Treatment of the ampy-type complexes 8-15 with methanol at RT leads to isomerization to the cationic derivatives [Ru(κ2-OAc)P2(NN)]OAc (8a-15a; NN = ampy, ampyrim; P2 = dppp, dppb, dppf, (R)-BINAP). Similarly to 2, the dipivalate trans-[Ru(κ1-OPiv)2(PPh3)2(ampy)] (18) is prepared from [Ru(κ2-OPiv)2(PPh3)2] (17) and ampy in CHCl3. The pincer acetate [Ru(κ1-OAc)(CNNOMe)(PPh3)2] (19) has been synthesized from [Ru(κ2-OAc)2(PPh3)2] and HCNNOMe ligand in 2-propanol with NEt3 at reflux. In addition, the dppb pincer complexes [Ru(κ1-OAc)(CNN)(dppb)] (CNN = AMTP (20), AMBQPh (21)) have been obtained from [Ru(κ2-OAc)2(PPh3)2], dppb, and HAMTP or HAMBQPh with NEt3, respectively. The acetate NN and pincer complexes are active in transfer hydrogenation with 2-propanol and hydrogenation with H2 of carbonyl compounds at S/C values of up to 10000 and with TOF values of up to 160000 h-1.

Abstract
The cationic acetate ruthenium complex [Ru(η1-OAc)(CO)(dppb)(phen)]OAc (1) is easily prepared in 83% yield from [Ru(η1-OAc)(η2-OAc)(CO)(dppb)] (dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in MeOH. The derivative 1 undergoes easy substitution of the coordinated acetate by reaction with NaOPiv, KSAc, and KSCN in MeOH, affording the corresponding complexes [RuX(CO)(dppb)(phen)]X (X = OPiv, 2; SAc, 3; and NCS, 4), whereas its reaction with NaCl and NH4PF6 affords [RuCl(CO)(dppb)(phen)]PF6 (5). Carboxylate complexes 1 and 2 show high solubility in water, enabling easy exchange of the coordinated carboxylate by water and other ligands (CH3CN, glutathione). Cationic complexes 1-5, compared to Cisplatin, display a strong cell viability decrease in two human anaplastic thyroid cancer cell lines (SW1736 and 8505C), ranging from 3.10 μM to 0.09 μM EC50 values. The most active compounds 1-3 show a marked increment of apoptosis and decrease of cancer cell aggressiveness, making them promising candidates for further evaluation studies.

Abstract
The Krebs cycle is the fuel/energy source for cellular activity and therefore of paramount importance for oxygen-based life. The cycle occurs in the mitochondrial matrix, where it produces and transfers electrons to generate energy-rich NADH and FADH2, as well as C4-, C5-, and C6-polycarboxylic acids as energy-poor metabolites. These metabolites are biorenewable resources that represent potential sustainable carbon feedstocks, provided that carbon-hydrogen bonds are restored to these molecules. In the present study, these polycarboxylic acids and other mitochondria-relevant metabolites underwent dehydration (alcohol-to-olefin and/or dehydrative cyclization) and reduction (hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis) to diols or triols upon reaction with H2, catalyzed by sterically confined iridium-bipyridyl complexes. The investigation of these single-metal site catalysts provides valuable molecular insights into the development of molecular technologies for the reduction and dehydration of highly functionalized carbon resources.

Abstract
Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts is crucial for the electrochemical production of pure and clean hydrogen. For practical applications, an economical and facile method of producing catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential. Here, we report ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles uniformly deposited on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as an efficient HER catalyst. The catalyst exhibits the small overpotentials of 13 and 17 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M aq. H2SO4 and 1.0 M aq. KOH, respectively, surpassing the commercial Pt/C (16 mV and 33 mV). Moreover, the catalyst has excellent stability in both media, showing almost "zeroloss" during cycling. In a real device, the catalyst produces 15.4% more hydrogen per power consumed, and shows a higher Faradaic efficiency (92.28%) than the benchmark Pt/C (85.97%). Density functional theory calculations suggest that Ru-C bonding is the most plausible active site for the HER.

A series of molybdenum pincer complexes has been shown for the first time to be active in the catalytic hydrogenation of amides. Among the tested catalysts, Mo-1a proved to be particularly well suited for the selective C–N hydrogenolysis of N-methylated formanilides. Notably, high chemoselectivity was observed in the presence of certain reducible groups including even other amides. The general catalytic performance as well as selectivity issues could be rationalized taking an anionic Mo(0) as the active species. The interplay between the amide C

O reduction and the catalyst poisoning by primary amides accounts for the selective hydrogenation of N-methylated formanilides. The catalyst resting state was found to be a Mo–alkoxo complex formed by reaction with the alcohol product. This species plays two opposed roles – it facilitates the protolytic cleavage of the C–N bond but it encumbers the activation of hydrogen.

Abstract
Catalytic reduction of carboxylic acid to the corresponding alcohol is a challenging task of great importance for the production of a variety of value-added chemicals. Herein, a manganese-catalyzed chemoselective hydroboration of carboxylic acids has been developed with a high turnover number (>99 000) and turnover frequency (>2000 h-1) at 25 °C. This method displayed tolerance of electronically and sterically differentiated substrates with high chemoselectivity. Importantly, aliphatic long-chain fatty acids, including biomass-derived compounds, can efficiently be reduced. Mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction occurs through the formation of active manganese-hydride species via an insertion and bond metathesis type mechanism.

Abstract
The first base-metal-catalysed hydrogenation of CO2 -derived carbonates to alcohols is presented. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions in the presence of a well-defined manganese complex with a loading as low as 0.25 mol %. The non-precious-metal homogenous catalytic system provides an indirect route for the conversion of CO2 into methanol with the co-production of value-added (vicinal) diols in yields of up to 99 %. Experimental and computational studies indicate a metal-ligand cooperative catalysis mechanism.

Abstract
Tetrakis(dimethylamido)diboron and tetrahydroxydiboron are herein reported as new catalysts for the synthesis of aryl amides by catalytic condensation of aromatic carboxylic acids with amines. The developed protocol is both simple and highly efficient over a broad range of substrates. This method thus represents an attractive approach for the use of diboron catalysts in the synthesis of amides without having to resort to stoichiometric or additional dehydrating agents.

Abstract
The crystal structures of tris-(3,5-di-methyl-phen-yl)phosphine (C24H27P), (I), tris-(3,5-di-methyl-phen-yl)phosphine oxide (C24H27OP), (II), tris-(4-meth-oxy-3,5-di-methyl-phen-yl)phosphine (C27H33O3P), (III), and tris-(4-meth-oxy-3,5-di-methyl-phen-yl)phosphine oxide (C27H33O4P), (IV), are reported. The strucure of (III) has been described before [Romain et al. (2000 ▸). Organometallics, 19, 2047-2050], but it is rereported here on the basis of modern area-detector data and to facilitate comparison with the other structures reported here. Compounds (I) and (II) crystallize isostructurally in P21/c. Similarly, (III) and (IV) crystallize isostructurally in Pbca. The conformations of (I) and (II) in the solid state deviate strongly from helical, whereas those of (III) and (IV) are found to be closer to an ideal threefold rotational symmetry. The pyramidality indices, ∑(C-P-C), are 305.35 (16), 317.23 (15), 307.2 (4) and 318.67 (18)° for (I), (II), (III) and (IV), respectively. Each is found to be more pyramidal than Ph3P or Ph3PO. Hybrid DFT calculations incorporating terms for dispersion provide evidence that the causes of the increased pyramidality, despite the 3,5-dimethyl group substitution, include dispersion inter-actions. The calculated ∑(C-P-C) values are 304.8° for both (I) and (III) and 317.4° for both (II) and (IV), with no difference arising from the substitution at ring position 4.

Abstract
Abstract
Alcohols are a promising source for the sustainable production of hydrogen that may also serve as rechargeable liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). Metal-catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols produces carbonyl derivatives as H2-depleted by-products, which by means of a hydrogenation reaction can be reconverted to the initial alcohols. Hence, reversible H2-storage systems based on pairs of secondary alcohols/ketones and primary alcohols/carboxylic acid derivatives may be envisaged. In this contribution, the hydrogenation of carbonyl derivatives, including ketones, esters, amides and carboxylic acids, is reviewed from the perspective of the hydrogen storage in alcohols.

Abstract
The mechanism of the ruthenium carboxylate-catalyzed hydrogenation of carboxylic acids was investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The novel mechanism including two hydrogenation cycles was proposed for this reaction. The first cycle is the hydrogenation of the carboxylic acid to an aldehyde, while the second cycle is the hydrogenation of the aldehyde to an alcohol. These two catalytic cycles share similar elementary steps, including H2 heterolysis, hydride migration of the carboxylic acid or aldehyde, and catalyst regeneration. In this hydrogenation mechanism, the carboxylic acid is not only a reactant, but also an important proton source. Furthermore, the noncovalent interaction (e.g. hydrogen bonding interaction) between the ligand and carboxylic acid substrate could promote the hydrogenation of the carboxylic acid through stabilizing the transition state of the most energy-demanding step (i.e., hydride migration in the first catalytic cycle). Besides, the strong electron-donating ability of the dppb ligand could also facilitate the hydride migration.

Abstract
Carboxylic acids (CAs) are one of the most ubiquitous and important chemical feedstocks available from biorenewable resources, CO2, and the petrochemical industry. Unfortunately, chemoselective catalytic transformations of CHnCO2H (n = 1–3) groups into other functionalities remain a significant challenge. Herein, we report rheniumV complexes as extremely effective precatalysts for this purpose. Compared to previously reported heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts derived from high- or low-valent metals, the present method involves a α-C–H bond functionalization, a hydrogenation, and a hydrogenolysis, which affords functionalized alcohols with a wide substrate scope and high chemoselectivity under relatively mild reaction conditions. The results represent an important step toward a paradigm shift from ‘low-valent’ to ‘high-valent’ metal complexes by exploring a new portfolio of selective functional group transformations of highly oxygenated organic substrates, as well as toward the exploitation of CAs as a valuable biorenewable feedstock.

Abstract
Novel well-defined NNP and PNP manganese pincer complexes have been synthetized and fully characterized. The catalyst Mn-2 containing an imidazolyaminolphosphino ligand shows high activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of a wide range of secondary and tertiary amides to the corresponding alcohols and amines, under relatively mild conditions. For the first time, more challenging substrates like primary aromatic amides including an actual herbicide can also be hydrogenated using this earth-abundant metal-based pincer catalyst.
