Resonance Raman signature of intertube excitons in compositionally-defined carbon nanotube bundles

Synthesis of Ultrahigh-Purity (6,5) Carbon Nanotubes Using a Trimetallic Catalyst

Chirality-controlled synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is one of the ultimate goals in the field of nanotube synthesis. At present, direct synthesis achieving a purity of over 90%, which can be called single-chirality synthesis, has been achieved for only two types of chiralities: (14,4) and (12,6) CNTs. Here, we realized an ultrahigh-purity (∼95.8%) synthesis of (6,5) CNTs with a trimetallic catalyst NiSnFe. Partial formation of Ni3Sn crystals was found within the NiSnFe nanoparticles. The activation energy for the selective growth of (6,5) CNTs decreased owing to the formation of Ni3Sn crystals, resulting in the high-purity synthesis of (6,5) CNTs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that one-dimensional (1D) crystals of periodic strip lines with 8.8 Å spacing are formed within the as-grown ultrahigh-purity (6,5) CNTs, which are well-matched with the simulated TEM image of closely packed 37 (6,5) CNTs with 2.8 Å intertube distance, indicating the direct formation of chirality-pure (6,5)-CNT bundle structures. The photoluminescence (PL) lifetime increases more than 20 times by the formation of chirality-pure bundle structures of (6,5) CNTs compared to that of isolated (6,5) CNTs. This can be explained by exciton delocalization or intertube excitons within bundle structures of chirality-pure (6,5) CNTs.

Temperature dependence of the near infrared absorption spectrum of single-wall carbon nanotubes dispersed by sodium dodecyl sulfate in aqueous solution: experiments and molecular dynamics study

CONTEXT

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) dispersed in water with the help of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants exhibit a temperature dependent near infrared (NIR) exciton spectrum. Due to their biocompatibility and NIR spectrum falling within the transparent window for biological tissue, SWCNTs hold potential for sensing temperature inside cells. Here, we seek to elucidate the mechanism responsible for this temperature dependence, focusing on changes in the water coverage of the SWCNT as the surfactant structure changes with temperature. We compare optical absorption spectra in the UV-Vis-IR range and fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The observed temperature dependence of the spectra for various SWCNTs may be attributed to changes in the dielectric environment and its impact on excitons. MD simulations reveal that the adsorbed SDS molecules effectively shield the SWCNT, with ~ 70% of water molecules removed from the first two adlayers; this coverage shows a modest temperature dependence. Although we are not able to directly demonstrate how this influences the NIR spectrum, this represents a potential pathway given the strong influence of the water environment on the excitons in SWCNTs.

METHODS

Optical absorption measurements were carried out in the UV-Vis-NIR range using a Varian Cary 5000 spectrophotometer in a temperature-controlled environment. PeakFit™ v. 4.06 was used as peak-fitting program in the spectral range 900-1400 nm (890-1380 meV) as a function of the temperature. Fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations were conducted using the NAMD2 package. The CHARMM force field comprising two-body bond stretching, three-body angle deformation, four-body dihedral angle deformation, and nonbonded interactions (electrostatic and Lennard-Jones 6-16 potentials) was employed.

Unveiling Coherent Control of Halomethane Dissociation Induced by a Single Strong Ultraviolet Pulse

We present a theoretical investigation into the coherent control of photodissociation reactions in halomethanes, specifically focusing on CH2BrCl by manipulating the spectral phase of a single femtosecond laser pulse. We examine the photodissociation of CH2BrCl under an ultrashort pulse with a quadratic spectral phase and reveal the sensitivity of both the total dissociation probability and the resulting radical products (Br+CH2Cl and Cl+CH2Br) to chirp rates. To gain insights into the underlying mechanism, we calculate the population distributions of excited vibrational states in the ground electronic state, demonstrating the occurrence of resonance Raman scattering (RRS) in the strong-field limit regime. By utilizing chirped pulses, we show that this RRS phenomenon can be suppressed and even eliminated through quantum destructive interference. This highlights the high sensitivity of photodissociation into Cl+CH2Br to the spectral phase, showcasing a phenomenon that goes beyond the traditional one-photon photodissociation of isolated molecules in the weak-field limit regime. These findings emphasize the importance of coherent control in the exploration and utilization of photodissociation in polyatomic molecules, paving the way for new advancements in chemical physics and femtochemistry.

Broadband Full-Spectrum Raman Excitation Mapping Reveals Intricate Optoelectronic-Vibrational Resonance Structure of Chirality-Pure Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The Raman excitation spectra of chirality-pure (6,5), (7,5), and (8,3) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are explored for homogeneous solid film samples over broad excitation energy and scattering energy ranges using a rapid and relatively simple full spectrum Raman excitation mapping technique. Identification of variation in scattering intensity with sample type and phonon energy related to different vibrational bands is clearly realized. Excitation profiles are found to vary strongly for different phonon modes. Some modes' Raman excitation profiles are extracted, with the G band profile compared to earlier work. Other modes, such as the M and iTOLA modes, have quite sharp resonance profiles and strong resonances. Conventional fixed wavelength Raman spectroscopy can miss these effects on the scattering intensities entirely due to the significant intensity changes observed for small variations in excitation wavelength. Peak intensities for phonon modes traceable to a pristine carbon lattice forming a SWCNT sidewall were greater for high-crystallinity materials. In the case of highly defective SWCNTs, the scattering intensities of the G band and the defect-related D band are demonstrated to be affected both in absolute intensities and in relative ratio, with the ratio that would be measured by single wavelength Raman scattering dependent on the excitation wavelength due to differences in the resonance energy profiles of the two bands. Lastly it is shown that the approach of this contribution yields a clear path toward increasing the rigor and quantification of resonance Raman scattering intensity measurements through tractable corrections of excitation and emission side variations in efficiency with excitation wavelength.

Electroluminescence from Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Quantum Defects

Individual single-walled carbon nanotubes with covalent sidewall defects have emerged as a class of photon sources whose photoluminescence spectra can be tailored by the carbon nanotube chirality and the attached functional group/molecule. Here we present electroluminescence spectroscopy data from single-tube devices based on (7, 5) carbon nanotubes, functionalized with dichlorobenzene molecules, and wired to graphene electrodes. We observe electrically generated, defect-induced emissions that are controllable by electrostatic gating and strongly red-shifted compared to emissions from pristine nanotubes. The defect-induced emissions are assigned to excitonic and trionic recombination processes by correlating electroluminescence excitation maps with electrical transport and photoluminescence data. At cryogenic conditions, additional gate-dependent emission lines appear, which are assigned to phonon-assisted hot-exciton electroluminescence from quasi-levels. Similar results were obtained with functionalized (6, 5) nanotubes. We also compare functionalized (7, 5) electroluminescence data with photoluminescence of pristine and functionalized (7, 5) nanotubes redox-doped using gold(III) chloride solution. This work shows that electroluminescence excitation is selective toward neutral defect-state configurations with the lowest transition energy, which in combination with gate-control over neutral versus charged defect-state emission leads to high spectral purity.

Fano resonance line shapes in the Raman spectra of tubulin and microtubules reveal quantum effects

Microtubules are self-assembling biological nanotubes made of the protein tubulin that are essential for cell motility, cell architecture, cell division, and intracellular trafficking. They demonstrate unique mechanical properties of high resilience and stiffness due to their quasi-crystalline helical structure. It has been theorized that this hollow molecular nanostructure may function like a quantum wire where optical transitions can take place, and photoinduced changes in microtubule architecture may be mediated via changes in disulfide or peptide bonds or stimulated by photoexcitation of tryptophan, tyrosine, or phenylalanine groups, resulting in subtle protein structural changes owing to alterations in aromatic flexibility. Here, we measured the Raman spectra of a microtubule and its constituent protein tubulin both in dry powdered form and in aqueous solution to determine if molecular bond vibrations show potential Fano resonances, which are indicative of quantum coupling between discrete phonon vibrational states and continuous excitonic many-body spectra. The key findings of this work are that we observed the Raman spectra of tubulin and microtubules and found line shapes characteristic of Fano resonances attributed to aromatic amino acids and disulfide bonds.

Multistep Fractionation of Coal and Application for Graphene Synthesis

Despite its complex structure, coal has shown to be a promising precursor for graphene synthesis by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). However, the presence of heteroatoms and aliphatic chains in coal can lead to defects in the graphene lattice, preventing the formation of pristine graphene layers. Therefore, the goal of this study was to formulate a multistep coal fractionation scheme to extract and characterize the most aromatic fractions and explore their potential as graphene precursors. The scheme consisted of direct coal liquefaction under different conditions, Soxhlet extraction with heptane then toluene, and preparative liquid chromatography on silica gel using heptol solutions with different heptane/toluene ratios. The fractions obtained by this process were analyzed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric and elemental analyses, and automated SAR-AD (saturates, aromatics, resins-asphaltene determinator) separations. This characterization allowed the identification of two aromatic fractions with and without heteroatoms, which were subsequently used for graphene synthesis by CVD on nickel and copper foils. Raman spectrometry revealed that both fractions primarily formed defect-free multilayered graphene with approximately 11 layers on nickel due to the high solubility of carbon and the defect-healing effect of nickel. On the other hand, these fractions generated amorphous carbon on copper due to the high solubility of hydrogen in copper, which competed with carbon. Molecules in the more aromatic heteroatom-free fraction still contained alkyl pendant substituents and did not share the same planarity and symmetry to form defect-free graphene on copper. Thus, the quality of graphene was governed by the substrate on nickel and by the precursor quality on copper. When deposited directly on lacey carbon-coated copper grids of a transmission electron microscope, the heteroatom-free fraction gave rise to much larger graphene domains. The presence of heteroatoms promoted the formation of small self-assembled agglomerates of amorphous carbon.

Ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy with a continuously tunable picosecond laser: Application to the supramolecular ligand guanidiniocarbonyl pyrrole (GCP)

We present a UVRR spectroscopy setup which is equipped with a picosecond pulsed laser excitation source continuously tunable in the 210-2600 nm wavelength range. This laser source is based on a three-stage optical parametric amplifier (OPA) pumped by a bandwidth-compressed second harmonic output of an amplified Yb:KGW laser. It provides <15 cm^-1 linewidth pulses below 270 nm, which is sufficient for resolving Raman lines of samples in condensed phase studies. For demonstrating the capability of this tunable setup for UVRR spectroscopy we present its application to the artificial ligand guanidiniocarbonyl pyrrole (GCP), a carboxylate binder used in peptide and protein recognition. A UVRR excitation study in the range 244-310 nm was performed for identifying the optimum laser excitation wavelength for UVRR spectroscopy of this ligand (λ_max = 298 nm) at submillimolar concentrations (400 µM) in aqueous solution. The optimum UVRR spectrum is observed for laser excitation with λ_exc = 266 nm. Only in the relatively narrow range of λ_exc = 266-275 nm UVRR spectra with a sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio and without severe interference from autofluorescence (AF) were detectable. At longer excitation wavelengths the UVRR signal is masked by AF. At shorter excitation wavelengths the UVRR spectrum is sufficiently separated from the AF, but the resonance enhancement is not sufficient. The presented tunable UVRR setup provides the flexibility to also identify optimum conditions for other supramolecular ligands for peptide/protein recognition.

Full Spectrum Raman Excitation Mapping Spectroscopy

A generalization of the Raman scattering (RS) spectrum, the Raman excitation map (REM) is a hyperspectral two-dimensional (2D) data set encoding vibrational spectra, electronic spectra and their coupling. Despite the great potential of REM for optical sensing and characterization with remarkable sensitivity and selectivity, the difficulty of obtaining maps and the length of time required to acquire them has been practically limiting. Here we show, with a simple setup using current optical equipment, that maps can be obtained much more rapidly than before (~ms to ~100 s now vs. ~1000 s to hours before) over a broad excitation range (here ~100 nm is demonstrated, with larger ranges straightforward to obtain), thus taking better advantage of scattering resonance. We obtain maps from different forms of carbon: graphite, graphene, purified single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and chirality enriched SWCNTs. The relative speed and simplicity of the technique make REM a practical and sensitive tool for chemical analysis and materials characterization.

Vanishing and Revival of Resonance Raman Scattering

The possibility to manipulate quantum coherence and interference, apart from its fundamental interest in quantum mechanics, is essential for controlling nonlinear optical processes such as high harmonic generation, multiphoton absorption, and stimulated Raman scattering. We show, analytically and numerically, how a nonlinear optical process via resonance Raman scattering (RRS) can be manipulated in a four-level double-Λ system by using pulsed laser fields. We find that two simultaneously excited RRS paths involved in the system can generate an ultimately destructive interference in the broad-bandwidth-limit regime. This, in turn, reduces the four-level system to an equivalent three-level system in a V configuration capable of naturally vanishing RRS effects. We further show that this counterintuitive phenomenon, i.e., the RRS vanishing, can be prevented by transferring a modulated phase of the laser pulse to the system at resonance frequencies. This work demonstrates a clear signature of both quantum destructive and constructive interference by actively controlling resonant multiphoton processes in multilevel quantum systems, and it therefore has potential applications in nonlinear optics, quantum control, and quantum information science.
