Dynamical coupling between a nuclear spin ensemble and electromechanical phonons

Collective effects on the performance and stability of quantum heat engines

Recent predictions for quantum-mechanical enhancements in the operation of small heat engines have raised renewed interest in their study both from a fundamental perspective and in view of applications. One essential question is whether collective effects may help to carry enhancements over larger scales, when increasing the number of systems composing the working substance of the engine. Such enhancements may consider not only power and efficiency, that is, its performance, but, additionally, its constancy, that is, the stability of the engine with respect to unavoidable environmental fluctuations. We explore this issue by introducing a many-body quantum heat engine model composed by spin pairs working in continuous operation. We study how power, efficiency, and constancy scale with the number of spins composing the engine and introduce a well-defined macroscopic limit where analytical expressions are obtained. Our results predict power enhancements, in both finite-size and macroscopic cases, for a broad range of system parameters and temperatures, without compromising the engine efficiency, accompanied by coherence-enhanced constancy for finite sizes. We discuss these quantities in connection to thermodynamic uncertainty relations.

Nuclear spin quantum register in an optically active semiconductor quantum dot

Epitaxial quantum dots (QDs) have long been identified as promising charge spin qubits offering an efficient interface to quantum light and advanced semiconductor nanofabrication technologies. However, charge spin coherence is limited by interaction with the nanoscale ensemble of atomic nuclear spins, which is particularly problematic in strained self-assembled dots. Here, we use strain-free GaAs/AlGaAs QDs, demonstrating a fully functioning two-qubit quantum register using the nanoscale ensemble of arsenic quadrupolar nuclear spins as its hardware. Tailored radio-frequency pulses allow quantum state storage for up to 20 ms, and are used for few-microsecond single-qubit and two-qubit control gates with fidelities exceeding 97%. Combining long coherence and high-fidelity control with optical initialization and readout, we implement benchmark quantum computations such as Grover's search and the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm. Our results identify QD nuclei as a potential quantum information resource, which can complement charge spins and light particles in future QD circuits.

Towards future physics and applications via two-dimensional material NEMS resonators

Two-dimensional materials (2Dm) offer a unique insight into the world of quantum mechanics including van der Waals (vdWs) interactions, exciton dynamics and various other nanoscale phenomena. 2Dm are a growing family consisting of graphene, hexagonal-Boron Nitride (h-BN), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), monochalcogenides (MNs), black phosphorus (BP), MXenes and 2D organic crystals such as small molecules (e.g., pentacene, C8 BTBT, perylene derivatives, etc.) and polymers (e.g., COF and MOF, etc.). They exhibit unique mechanical, electrical, optical and optoelectronic properties that are highly enhanced as the surface to volume ratio increases, resulting from the transition of bulk to the few- to mono- layer limit. Such unique attributes include the manifestation of highly tuneable bandgap semiconductors, reduced dielectric screening, highly enhanced many body interactions, the ability to withstand high strains, ferromagnetism, piezoelectric and flexoelectric effects. Using 2Dm for mechanical resonators has become a promising field in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) for applications involving sensors and condensed matter physics investigations. 2Dm NEMS resonators react with their environment, exhibit highly nonlinear behaviour from tension induced stiffening effects and couple different physics domains. The small size and high stiffness of these devices possess the potential of highly enhanced force sensitivities for measuring a wide variety of un-investigated physical forces. This review highlights current research in 2Dm NEMS resonators from fundamental physics and an applications standpoint, as well as presenting future possibilities using these devices.

Novel Dynamical Magnetoelectric Effects in Multiferroic BiFeO_{3}

An atomistic effective Hamiltonian scheme is employed within molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how the electrical polarization and magnetization of the multiferroic BiFeO_{3} respond to time-dependent ac magnetic fields of various frequencies, as well as to reveal the frequency dependency of the dynamical (quadratic) magnetoelectric coefficient. We found the occurrence of vibrations having phonon frequencies in both the time dependency of the electrical polarization and magnetization (for any applied ac frequency), therefore making such vibrations of electromagnonic nature, when the homogeneous strain of the system is frozen (case 1). Moreover, the quadratic magnetoelectric coupling constant is monotonic and almost dispersionless in the sub-THz range in this case 1. In contrast, when the homogeneous strain can fully relax (case 2), two additional low-frequency and strain-mediated oscillations emerge in the time-dependent behavior of the polarization and magnetization, which result in resonances in the quadratic magnetoelectric coefficient. Such additional oscillations consist of a mixing between acoustic phonons, optical phonons, and magnons, and reflect the existence of a new quasiparticle that can be coined an "electroacoustic magnon." This latter finding can prompt experimentalists to shape their samples to take advantage of, and tune, the magnetostrictive-induced mechanical resonance frequency, in order to achieve large dynamical magnetoelectric couplings.
