Layered Pd oxide on PdSn nanowires for boosting direct H2O2 synthesis

Ag+-Induced Assembly of Pt Clusters for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Cluster-assembled nanowires provide a unique strategy for the preparation of high-performance nanostructures. However, existing preparations are limited by complex processes and harsh reaction conditions. Here, Ag+ ions were utilized as a novel structure-directing agent to generate the self-assembly of Pt clusters to form ultrafine nanowires with a diameter of less than 5 nm. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) characterizations demonstrated that every Ag+ bridged two [Pt3(CO)3(μ2-CO)3]n2- clusters through coordination and formed a sandwich-like structure of [Pt3(CO)3(μ2-CO)3]nAg[Pt3(CO)3(μ2-CO)3]m3-. As a result, multiple sandwich-like structures of [Pt3(CO)3(μ2-CO)3]nAg[Pt3(CO)3(μ2-CO)3]m3- were established by Ag+ to form Pt nanowire superstructures {[Pt3(CO)6]nAg[Pt3(CO)6]mAg[Pt3(CO)6]x}∞ (abbreviated as Ag-Pt NWS). Our results demonstrate that the Pt nanowire superstructures showed promising cocatalytic performance for photocatalytic H2 production with the involvement of Ag+, which promises a desirable way to develop advanced functional nanomaterials.

Designing Heterocyclic Covalent Organic Frameworks with Tunable Electronic Structures for Efficient Electrosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

The electrocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) through the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) has garnered significant research attention in recent years due to its numerous appealing advantages, such as being eco-friendly and exhibiting high energy conversion efficiency. Metal-free carbon materials with specific catalytic sites have been recognized as potential electrocatalysts for 2e- ORR; however, the design of highly efficient catalysts with well-defined structures and long-term stability for large-scale H2O2 production remains unsatisfactory. In this study, three covalent organic frameworks (COFs) - imine-linked LZU-1, oxazole-linked LZU-190, and thiazole-linked LZU-190(S), are successfully synthesized to explore their catalytic activity in electrocatalytic H2O2 production. Among these, the carbon sites LZU-190(S) are predominantly activated by the introduced adjacent heteroatoms via electronic effects, resulting in much higher H2O2 selectivity compared to the oxazole and imine linkages. This work provides new insights into developing COFs-based electrocatalysts for efficient H2O2 generation.

Facet-dependent synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2 over single Pt atom-modified Pd nanocrystal catalysts

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of the most valuable clean energy sources with a rapidly growing requirement in industry and daily life. The direct synthesis of H2O2 from hydrogen and oxygen is considered to be an economical and environmentally friendly manufacturing route to replace the traditional anthraquinone method, although it remains a formidable challenge owing to low H2O2 selectivity and production. Here, we report a catalyst consisting of Pd(111) nanocrystals on TiO2 modified with single Pt atoms (Pt1Pd(111)/TiO2), which displays outstanding reactivity, producing 1921.3 μmol of H2O2, a H2 conversion of 62.2% and H2O2 selectivity of 80.3% over 30 min. Kinetic and isotope experiments confirm that the extraordinary catalytic properties are due to stronger H2 activation (the rate-determining step). DFT calculations confirm that Pt1Pd(111) exhibits lower energy barriers for H2 dissociation and two-step O2 hydrogenation, but higher energy barriers for side reactions than Pt1Pd(100), demonstrating clear facet dependence and resulting in greater selectivity and amount of H2O2 produced.

Selective Oxidation Using In Situ-Generated Hydrogen Peroxide

ConspectusHydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for industrial applications is manufactured through an indirect process that relies on the sequential reduction and reoxidation of quinone carriers. While highly effective, production is typically centralized and entails numerous energy-intensive concentration steps. Furthermore, the overhydrogenation of the quinone necessitates periodic replacement, leading to incomplete atom efficiency. These factors, in addition to the presence of propriety stabilizing agents and concerns associated with their separation from product streams, have driven interest in alternative technologies for chemical upgrading. The decoupling of oxidative transformations from commercially synthesized H2O2 may offer significant economic savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for several industrially relevant processes. Indeed, the production and utilization of the oxidant in situ, from the elements, would represent a positive step toward a more sustainable chemical synthesis sector, offering the potential for total atom efficiency, while avoiding the drawbacks associated with current industrial routes, which are inherently linked to commercial H2O2 production. Such interest is perhaps now more pertinent than ever given the rapidly improving viability of green hydrogen production.The application of in situ-generated H2O2 has been a long-standing goal in feedstock valorization, with perhaps the most significant interest placed on propylene epoxidation. Until very recently a viable in situ alternative to current industrial oxidative processes has been lacking, with prior approaches typically hindered by low rates of conversion or poor selectivity toward desired products, often resulting from competitive hydrogenation reactions. Based on over 20 years of research, which has led to the development of catalysts for the direct synthesis of H2O2 that offer high synthesis rates and >99% H2 utilization, we have recently turned our attention to a range of oxidative transformations where H2O2 is generated and utilized in situ. Indeed, we have recently demonstrated that it is possible to rival state-of-the-art industrial processes through in situ H2O2 synthesis, establishing the potential for significant process intensification and considerable decarbonization of the chemical synthesis sector.We have further established the potential of an in situ route to both bulk and fine chemical synthesis through a chemo-catalytic/enzymatic one-pot approach, where H2O2 is synthesized over heterogeneous surfaces and subsequently utilized by a class of unspecific peroxygenase enzymes for C-H bond functionalization. Strikingly, through careful control of the chemo-catalyst, it is possible to ensure that competitive, nonenzymatic pathways are inhibited while also avoiding the regiospecific and selectivity concerns associated with current energy-intensive industrial processes, with further cost savings associated with the operation of the chemo-enzymatic approach at near-ambient temperatures and pressures. Beyond traditional applications of chemo-catalysis, the efficacy of in situ-generated H2O2 (and associated oxygen-based radical species) for the remediation of environmental pollutants has also been a major interest of our laboratory, with such technology offering considerable improvements over conventional disinfection processes.We hope that this Account, which highlights the key contributions of our laboratory to the field over recent years, demonstrates the chemistries that may be unlocked and improved upon via in situ H2O2 synthesis and it inspires broader interest from the scientific community.

Coherent Sub-Nanometer Interface between Crystalline and Amorphous Materials Boosts Electrochemical Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

There are enormous yet largely underexplored exotic phenomena and properties emerging from interfaces constructed by diverse types of components that may differ in composition, shape, or crystal structure. It remains poorly understood the unique properties a coherent interface between crystalline and amorphous materials may evoke, and there lacks a general strategy to fabricate such interfaces. It is demonstrated that by topotactic partial oxidation heterostructures composed of coherently registered crystalline and amorphous materials can be constructed. As a proof-of-concept study, heterostructures consisting of crystalline P3 N5 and amorphous P3 N5 Ox can be synthesized by creating amorphous P3 N5 Ox from crystalline P3 N5 without interrupting the covalent bonding across the coherent interface. The heterostructure is dictated by nanometer-sized short-range-ordered P3 N5 domains enclosed by amorphous P3 N5 Ox matrix, which entails simultaneously fast charge transfer across the interface and bicomponent synergistic effect in catalysis. Such a P3 N5 /P3 N5 Ox heterostructure attains an optimal adsorption energy for *OOH intermediates and exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance toward H2 O2 production by adopting a selectivity of 96.68% at 0.4 VRHE and a production rate of 321.5 mmol h-1 gcatalyst -1 at -0.3 VRHE . The current study provides new insights into the synthetic strategy, chemical structure, and catalytic property of a sub-nanometer coherent interface formed between crystalline and amorphous materials.

Built-in electric field and oxygen absorption synergistically optimized an organic/inorganic heterojunction for high-efficiency photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide production

The production of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) from oxygen and water is an attractive route for converting solar energy into chemical energy. In order to achieve high solar-to-H₂O₂ conversion efficiency, floral inorganic/organic (CdS/TpBpy) composite with strong oxygen absorption and S-scheme heterojunction was synthesized by simple solvothermal-hydrothermal methods. The unique flower-like structure increased the active sites and oxygen absorption. The existence of S-scheme heterojuntion facilitated the charge transfer across the built-in electric field. Without sacrificial reagents or stabilizers, the optimal CdS/TpBpy had a higher H₂O₂ production (3600 µmol g^-1 h^-1), which was 2.4 and 25.6 times than those of TpBpy and CdS, respectively. Meanwhile, CdS/TpBpy inhibited the H₂O₂ decomposition, thus increasing the overall output. Furthermore, a series of experiments and calculations were carried out to verify the photocatalytic mechanism. This work demonstrates a modification method to improve the photocatalytic activity of hybrid composites, and shows potential applications in energy conversion.
