Their significance lies in offering high energy density, longevity, and rechargeability, facilitating uninterrupted health monitoring and treatment within the body. The review delves into the development of microbatteries, emphasizing their miniaturization and biocompatibility, crucial for long-term, safe in-vivo use. It examines cutting-edge manufacturing techniques like physical and chemical vapor deposition, and atomic layer deposition, essential for the precision manufacture of the microbatteries. The paper contrasts primary and secondary batteries, highlighting the advantages of zinc-ion and magnesium-ion batteries for enhanced stability and reduced reactivity. It also explores biodegradable batteries, potentially obviating the need for surgical extraction post-use. The integration of microbatteries into diagnostic and therapeutic devices is also discussed, illustrating how they enhance the efficacy and sustainability of implantable biosensors and bioelectronics.

Printable, stretchable metal-vapor-desorption layers for high-fidelity patterning in soft, freeform electronics

High-fidelity patterning of thin metal films on arbitrary soft substrates promises integrated circuits and devices that can significantly augment the morphological functionalities of freeform electronics. However, existing patterning methods that decisively rely on prefabricated rigid masks are severely incompatible with myriad surfaces. Here, we report printable, stretchable metal-vapor-desorption layers (s-MVDLs) that can enable high-fidelity patterning of thin metal films on freeform polymeric surfaces. The printed rubbery matrix with highly mobile chains effectively repels various metal vapors from the surface and inhibits their condensation, thereby allowing selective metal deposition. The s-MVDLs are printed by direct ink writing techniques, enabling customizable and scalable thin metal patterns ranging from the micrometer to millimeter scale with high fidelity. Furthermore, the superior stretchability and mechanical robustness of the s-MVDLs allow highly compliant deformation along the substrates, enabling the construction of unconventional circuits and devices on multi-curvature, non-developable, and stretchable surfaces.

Recent advances in implantable sensors and electronics using printable materials for advanced healthcare

This review article focuses on the recent printing technological progress in healthcare, underscoring the significant potential of implantable devices across diverse applications. Printing technologies have widespread use in developing health monitoring devices, diagnostic systems, and surgical devices. Recent years have witnessed remarkable progress in fabricating low-profile implantable devices, driven by advancements in printing technologies and nanomaterials. The importance of implantable biosensors and bioelectronics is highlighted, specifically exploring printing tools using bio-printable inks for practical applications, including a detailed examination of fabrication processes and essential parameters. This review also justifies the need for mechanical and electrical compatibility between bioelectronics and biological tissues. In addition to technological aspects, this article delves into the importance of appropriate packaging methods to enhance implantable devices' performance, compatibility, and longevity, which are made possible by integrating cutting-edge printing technology. Collectively, we aim to shed light on the holistic landscape of implantable biosensors and bioelectronics, showcasing their evolving role in advancing healthcare through innovative printing technologies.

Design and Development of Transient Sensing Devices for Healthcare Applications

With the ever-growing requirements in the healthcare sector aimed at personalized diagnostics and treatment, continuous and real-time monitoring of relevant parameters is gaining significant traction. In many applications, health status monitoring may be carried out by dedicated wearable or implantable sensing devices only within a defined period and followed by sensor removal without additional risks for the patient. At the same time, disposal of the increasing number of conventional portable electronic devices with short life cycles raises serious environmental concerns due to the dangerous accumulation of electronic and chemical waste. An attractive solution to address these complex and contradictory demands is offered by biodegradable sensing devices. Such devices may be able to perform required tests within a programmed period and then disappear by safe resorption in the body or harmless degradation in the environment. This work critically assesses the design and development concepts related to biodegradable and bioresorbable sensors for healthcare applications. Different aspects are comprehensively addressed, from fundamental material properties and sensing principles to application-tailored designs, fabrication techniques, and device implementations. The emerging approaches spanning the last 5 years are emphasized and a broad insight into the most important challenges and future perspectives of biodegradable sensors in healthcare are provided.

Control of polymers' amorphous-crystalline transition enables miniaturization and multifunctional integration for hydrogel bioelectronics

Soft bioelectronic devices exhibit motion-adaptive properties for neural interfaces to investigate complex neural circuits. Here, we develop a fabrication approach through the control of metamorphic polymers' amorphous-crystalline transition to miniaturize and integrate multiple components into hydrogel bioelectronics. We attain an about 80% diameter reduction in chemically cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel fibers in a fully hydrated state. This strategy allows regulation of hydrogel properties, including refractive index (1.37-1.40 at 480 nm), light transmission (>96%), stretchability (139-169%), bending stiffness (4.6 ± 1.4 N/m), and elastic modulus (2.8-9.3 MPa). To exploit the applications, we apply step-index hydrogel optical probes in the mouse ventral tegmental area, coupled with fiber photometry recordings and social behavioral assays. Additionally, we fabricate carbon nanotubes-PVA hydrogel microelectrodes by incorporating conductive nanomaterials in hydrogel for spontaneous neural activities recording. We enable simultaneous optogenetic stimulation and electrophysiological recordings of light-triggered neural activities in Channelrhodopsin-2 transgenic mice.

Design, tuning, and blackbox optimization of laser systems

Chirped pulse amplification (CPA) and subsequent nonlinear optical (NLO) systems constitute the backbone of myriad advancements in semiconductor manufacturing, communications, biology, defense, and beyond. Accurately and efficiently modeling CPA+NLO-based laser systems is challenging because of the complex coupled processes and diverse simulation frameworks. Our modular start-to-end model unlocks the potential for exciting new optimization and inverse design approaches reliant on data-driven machine learning methods, providing a means to create tailored CPA+NLO systems unattainable with current models. To demonstrate this new, to our knowledge, technical capability, we present a study on the LCLS-II photo-injector laser, representative of a high-power and spectro-temporally non-trivial CPA+NLO system.

Hybrid interpenetrating network of polyester coronary stent with tunable biodegradation and mechanical properties

Poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) is an important candidate raw material of the next-generation biodegradable stent for percutaneous coronary intervention, yet how to make a polyester stent with sufficient mechanical strength and relatively fast biodegradation gets to be a dilemma. Herein, we put forward a hybrid interpenetrating network (H-IPN) strategy to resolve this dilemma. As such, we synthesize a multi-functional biodegradable macromer of star-like poly(d,l-lactide-co-ɛ-caprolactone) with six acrylate end groups, and photoinitiate it, after mixing with linear PLLA homopolymer, to trigger the free radical polymerization. The resultant crosslinked polymer blend is different from the classic semi-interpenetrating network, and partial chemical crosslinking occurs between the linear polymer and the macromer network. Combined with the tube blow molding and the postprocessing laser cutting, we fabricate a semi-crosslinked-polyester biodegradable coronary stent composed of H-IPN, which includes a physical network of polyester spherulites and a chemical crosslinking network of copolyester macromers and a part of homopolymers. Compared with the currently main-stream PLLA stent in research, this H-IPN stent realizes a higher and more appropriate biodegradation rate while maintaining sufficient radial strength. A series of polymer chemistry, polymer physics, polymer processing, and in vitro and in vivo biological assessments of medical devices have been made to examine the H-IPN material. The interventional implanting of the H-IPN stent into aorta abdominalis of rabbits and the follow-ups to 12 months have confirmed the safety and effectiveness.

Advances in electrode interface materials and modification technologies for brain-computer interfaces

Recent advances in neuroelectrode interface materials and modification technologies are reviewed. Brain-computer interface is the new method of human-computer interaction, which not only can realise the exchange of information between the human brain and external devices, but also provides a brand-new means for the diagnosis and treatment of brain-related diseases. The neural electrode interface part of brain-computer interface is an important area for electrical, optical and chemical signal transmission between brain tissue system and external electronic devices, which determines the performance of brain-computer interface. In order to solve the problems of insufficient flexibility, insufficient signal recognition ability and insufficient biocompatibility of traditional rigid electrodes, researchers have carried out extensive studies on the neuroelectrode interface in terms of materials and modification techniques. This paper introduces the biological reactions that occur in neuroelectrodes after implantation into brain tissue and the decisive role of the electrode interface for electrode function. Following this, the latest research progress on neuroelectrode materials and interface materials is reviewed from the aspects of neuroelectrode materials and modification technologies, firstly taking materials as a clue, and then focusing on the preparation process of neuroelectrode coatings and the design scheme of functionalised structures.

A Sewing Approach to the Fabrication of Eco/bioresorbable Electronics

Eco/bioresorbable electronics represent an emerging class of technology defined by an ability to dissolve or otherwise harmlessly disappear in environmental or biological surroundings after a period of stable operation. The resulting devices provide unique capabilities as temporary biomedical implants, environmental sensors, and related systems. Recent publications report schemes to overcome challenges in fabrication that follow from the low thermostability and/or high chemical reactivity of the eco/bioresorbable constituent materials. Here, this work reports the use of high-speed sewing machines, as the basis for a high-throughput manufacturing technique that addresses many requirements for these applications, without the need for high temperatures or reactive solvents. Results demonstrate that a range of eco/bioresorbable metal wires and polymer threads can be embroidered into complex, user-defined conductive patterns on eco/bioresorbable substrates. Functional electronic components, such as stretchable interconnects and antennas are possible, along with fully integrated systems. Examples of the latter include wirelessly powered light-emitting diodes, radiofrequency identification tags, and temporary cardiac pacemakers. These advances add to a growing range of options in high-throughput, automated fabrication of eco/bioresorbable electronics.

[Rapid determination of 13 β-blockers in health foods by ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/electrostatic field orbitrap mass spectrometry]

A method based on ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/electrostatic field orbitrap mass spectrometry was developed for the rapid determination of 13 β-blockers in health foods. The MS fragmentation pathways of the analytes were subsequently investigated. The optimal MS conditions, extraction solvents, mobile phases, and matrix effects were evaluated in detail. The samples were extracted with methanol, filtered by high-speed centrifugation and ultrasonic treatment, and then separated on an Acquity UPLC BEH C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.7 μm) with gradient elution using acetonitrile and 0.1% (v/v) formic acid aqueous solution as mobile phases. MS analysis was conducted in positive-ion mode, and the data were collected using full mass and data-dependent MS2 scans (Full MS/dd-MS2). The efficient separation and high-precision primary and secondary scanning of the 13 β-blockers in health foods were realized within 10 min, and accurate mass numbers and fragment-ion information were obtained. The methodological validation showed good linear relationships in the range of 0.5-100 μg/L, with correlation coefficients (r)≥0.9912. The limits of detection ranged from 1 to 10 μg/kg. When the standard substances were added to the blank sample in the amount of 10-200 μg/kg, the recoveries were in the range of 75.3%-108.4%, and the relative standard deviations ranged from 0.9% to 10.0% (n=6). The method was used to screen 30 batches of commercially available health foods, and none of the 13 β-blockers was detected. The proposed method is fast, accurate, and sensitive, and can be used for the rapid determination of β-blockers in health foods.

Advances in Bioresorbable Materials and Electronics

Transient electronic systems represent an emerging class of technology that is defined by an ability to fully or partially dissolve, disintegrate, or otherwise disappear at controlled rates or triggered times through engineered chemical or physical processes after a required period of operation. This review highlights recent advances in materials chemistry that serve as the foundations for a subclass of transient electronics, bioresorbable electronics, that is characterized by an ability to resorb (or, equivalently, to absorb) in a biological environment. The primary use cases are in systems designed to insert into the human body, to provide sensing and/or therapeutic functions for timeframes aligned with natural biological processes. Mechanisms of bioresorption then harmlessly eliminate the devices, and their associated load on and risk to the patient, without the need of secondary removal surgeries. The core content focuses on the chemistry of the enabling electronic materials, spanning organic and inorganic compounds to hybrids and composites, along with their mechanisms of chemical reaction in biological environments. Following discussions highlight the use of these materials in bioresorbable electronic components, sensors, power supplies, and in integrated diagnostic and therapeutic systems formed using specialized methods for fabrication and assembly. A concluding section summarizes opportunities for future research.

Laser-Induced Fabrication of Micro-Optics on Bioresorbable Calcium Phosphate Glass for Implantable Devices

In this study, a single-step nanosecond laser-induced generation of micro-optical features is demonstrated on an antibacterial bioresorbable Cu-doped calcium phosphate glass. The inverse Marangoni flow of the laser-generated melt is exploited for the fabrication of microlens arrays and diffraction gratings. The process is realized in a matter of few seconds and, by optimizing the laser parameters, micro-optical features with a smooth surface are obtained showing a good optical quality. The tunability of the microlens' dimensions is achieved by varying the laser power, allowing the obtaining of multi-focal microlenses that are of great interest for three-dimensional (3D) imaging. Furthermore, the microlens' shape can be tuned between hyperboloid and spherical. The fabricated microlenses exhibited good focusing and imaging performance and the variable focal lengths were measured experimentally, showing good agreement with the calculated values. The diffraction gratings obtained by this method showed the typical periodic pattern with a first-order efficiency of about 5.1%. Finally, the dissolution characteristics of the fabricated micropatterns were studied in a phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS, pH = 7.4) demonstrating the bioresorbability of the micro-optical components. This study offers a new approach for the fabrication of micro-optics on bioresorbable glass, which could enable the manufacturing of new implantable optical sensing components for biomedical applications.

An Integrated Analog Front-End System on Flexible Substrate for the Acquisition of Bio-Potential Signals

The application of a versatile, low-temperature thin-film transistor (TFT) technology is presently described as the implementation on a flexible substrate of an analog front-end (AFE) system for the acquisition of bio-potential signals. The technology is based on semiconducting amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide (IGZO). The AFE system consists of three monolithically integrated constituent components: a bias-filter circuit with a bio-compatible low cut-off frequency of ≈1 Hz, a 4-stage differential amplifier offering a large gain-bandwidth product of ≈955 kHz, and an additional notch filter exhibiting over 30 dB suppression of the power-line noise. Respectively built using conductive IGZO electrodes with thermally induced donor agents and enhancement-mode fluorinated IGZO TFTs with exceptionally low leakage current, both capacitors and resistors with significantly reduced footprints are realized. Defined as the ratio of the gain-bandwidth product of an AFE system to its area, a record-setting figure-of-merit of ≈86 kHz mm^-2 is achieved. This is about an order of magnitude larger than the < 10 kHz mm^-2 of the nearest benchmark. Requiring no supplementary off-substrate signal-conditioning components and occupying an area of ≈11 mm² , the stand-alone AFE system is successfully applied to both electromyography and electrocardiography (ECG).
