Targeted chemical pressure yields tuneable millimetre-wave dielectric

Atomic Layer Engineering of Ferroelectricity in Dion-Jacobson Perovskites

Recent advances in "hybrid-improper" ferroelectricity in Dion-Jacobson (DJ)-type layered perovskites have caused renewed interest in the search for new ferroelectrics. Here, we present an approach for the tailored synthesis of a new homologous series of DJ-type layered perovskites Cs(Bi2Srn-3)(Tin-1Nb)O3n+1. Starting from CsBi2Ti2NbO10 (n = 3), higher-order homologous phases with n = 4 and 5 were successfully synthesized by repeated solid-state calcination with SrTiO3. Characterizations by X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering, and second harmonic generation showed the detailed structural features in Cs(Bi2Srn-3)(Tin-1Nb)O3n+1, and the polar structures could be stabilized by proper or hybrid-improper ferroelectricity, depending on the odd or even number of the perovskite layers. Our results provide important insights into the competition between the different mechanisms and the consequences of the ferroelectric properties in homologous layered perovskites.

Insights into Strain Engineering: From Ferroelectrics to Related Functional Materials and Beyond

Ferroelectrics have become indispensable components in various application fields, including information processing, energy harvesting, and electromechanical conversion, owing to their unique ability to exhibit electrically or mechanically switchable polarization. The distinct polar noncentrosymmetric lattices of ferroelectrics make them highly responsive to specific crystal structures. Even slight changes in the lattice can alter the polarization configuration and response to external fields. In this regard, strain engineering has emerged as a prevalent regulation approach that not only offers a versatile platform for structural and performance optimization within ferroelectrics but also unlocks boundless potential in various functional materials. In this review, we systematically summarize the breakthroughs in ferroelectric-based functional materials achieved through strain engineering and progress in method development. We cover research activities ranging from fundamental attributes to wide-ranging applications and novel functionalities ranging from electromechanical transformation in sensors and actuators to tunable dielectric materials and information technologies, such as transistors and nonvolatile memories. Building upon these achievements, we also explore the endeavors to uncover the unprecedented properties through strain engineering in related chemical functionalities, such as ferromagnetism, multiferroicity, and photoelectricity. Finally, through discussions on the prospects and challenges associated with strain engineering in the materials, this review aims to stimulate the development of new methods for strain regulation and performance boosting in functional materials, transcending the boundaries of ferroelectrics.

Electronic-grade epitaxial (111) KTaO3 heterostructures

KTaO3 heterostructures have recently attracted attention as model systems to study the interplay of quantum paraelectricity, spin-orbit coupling, and superconductivity. However, the high and low vapor pressures of potassium and tantalum present processing challenges to creating heterostructure interfaces clean enough to reveal the intrinsic quantum properties. Here, we report superconducting heterostructures based on high-quality epitaxial (111) KTaO3 thin films using an adsorption-controlled hybrid PLD to overcome the vapor pressure mismatch. Electrical and structural characterizations reveal that the higher-quality heterostructure interface between amorphous LaAlO3 and KTaO3 thin films supports a two-dimensional electron gas with substantially higher electron mobility, superconducting transition temperature, and critical current density than that in bulk single-crystal KTaO3-based heterostructures. Our hybrid approach may enable epitaxial growth of other alkali metal-based oxides that lie beyond the capabilities of conventional methods.

Robust Tunability and Newly Emerged Q Resonance of Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3-Based Microwave Capacitors under Gamma Irradiations

The complex resonance of dielectric quality factor Q, combined with a capacitance tunability n higher than 3:1 without any dispersion, was achieved in the voltage-tunable interdigital capacitors (IDCs) based on epitaxial Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 ferroelectric thin films across the microwave L (1-2 GHz), S (2-4 GHz), and C (4-8 GHz) bands at room temperature. The resonant Q and n features were driven by the microwave responses of the ferroelectric nanodomains engineered in the films. To promote their application in space radiation environments, the evolutions of Q and n both as functions of frequency f (1-8 GHz) and applied electric field E (0-240 kV/cm) were systematically investigated under a series of gamma-ray irradiations up to 100 kGy. The robust capacitance tunability was accompanied by the emergence of an additional Q resonance at 2.3 GHz in most post-irradiated devices, which is ascribed to extra polar nanoregions of expanded surface lattices associated with oxygen vacancies induced by irradiations.

Calibration of local chemical pressure by optical probe

Chemical stabilization of a high-pressure metastable state is a major challenge for the development of advanced materials. Although chemical pressure (Pchem) can effectively simulate the effect of physical pressure (Pphy), experimental calibration of the pressure passed to local structural motifs, denoted as local chemical pressure (Pchem-Δ) which significantly governs the function of solid materials, remains absent due to the challenge of probing techniques. Here we establish an innovative methodology to experimentally calibrate the Pchem-Δ and build a bridge between Pchem and Pphy via an optical probe strategy. Site-selective Bi3+-traced REVO4 (RE = Y, Gd) is adopted as a prototype to introduce Bi3+ optical probes and on-site sense of the Pchem-Δ experienced by the REO8 motif. The cell compression of RE0.98Bi0.02VO4 under Pphy is chemically simulated by smaller-ion substitution (Sc3+ → RE3+) in RE0.98-xScxBi0.02VO4. The consistent red shift (Δλ) of the emission spectra of Bi3+, which is dominated by locally pressure-induced REO8 dodecahedral variation in RE0.98Bi0.02VO4 (Pphy) and RE0.98-xScxBi0.02VO4 (Pchem-Δ), respectively, is evidence of their similar pressure-dependent local structure evolution. This innovative Δλ-based experimental calibration of Pchem-Δ in the crystal-field dimension portrays the anisotropic transmission of Pchem to the local structure and builds a bridge between Pchem-Δ and Pphy to guide a new perspective for affordable and practical interception of metastable states.

Reversible electric-field-induced phase transition in Ca-modified NaNbO3 perovskites for energy storage applications

Sodium niobate (NaNbO₃) is a potential material for lead-free dielectric ceramic capacitors for energy storage applications because of its antipolar ordering. In principle, a reversible phase transition between antiferroelectric (AFE) and ferroelectric (FE) phases can be induced by an application of electric field (E) and provides a large recoverable energy density. However, an irreversible phase transition from the AFE to the FE phase usually takes place and an AFE-derived polarization feature, a double polarization (P)-E hysteresis loop, does not appear. In this study, we investigate the impact of chemically induced hydrostatic pressure (p_chem) on the phase stability and polarization characteristics of NaNbO₃-based ceramics. We reveal that the cell volume of Ca-modified NaNbO₃ [(Ca_xNa_1-2xV_x)NbO₃], where V is A-site vacancy, decreases with increasing x by a positive p_chem. Structural analysis using micro-X-ray diffraction measurements shows that a reversible AFE-FE phase transition leads to a double P-E hysteresis loop for the sample with x = 0.10. DFT calculations support that a positive p_chem stabilizes the AFE phase even after the electrical poling and provides the reversible phase transition. Our study demonstrates that an application of positive p_chem is effective in delivering the double P-E loop in the NaNbO₃ system for energy storage applications.

Interface-related phenomena in epitaxial complex oxide ferroics across different thin film platforms: opportunities and challenges

Interfaces in complex oxides give rise to fascinating new physical phenomena arising from the interconnected spin, lattice, charge and orbital degrees of freedom. Most commonly, interfaces are engineered in epitaxial superlattice films. Of growing interest also are epitaxial vertically aligned nanocomposite films where interfaces form by self-assembly. These two thin film forms offer different capabilities for materials tuning and have been explored largely separately from one another. Ferroics (ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, multiferroic) are among the most fascinating phenomena to be manipulated using interface effects. Hence, in this review we compare and contrast the ferroic properties that arise in these two different film forms, highlighting exemplary materials combinations which demonstrate novel, enhanced and/or emergent ferroic functionalities. We discuss the origins of the observed functionalities and propose where knowledge can be translated from one materials form to another, to potentially produce new functionalities. Finally, for the two different film forms we present a perspective on underexplored/emerging research directions.

Atomic-Scale Mapping and Quantification of Local Ruddlesden-Popper Phase Variations

The Ruddlesden-Popper (A_n+1B_nO_3n+1) compounds are highly tunable materials whose functional properties can be dramatically impacted by their structural phase n. The negligible differences in formation energies for different n can produce local structural variations arising from small stoichiometric deviations. Here, we present a Python analysis platform to detect, measure, and quantify the presence of different n-phases based on atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images. We employ image phase analysis to identify horizontal Ruddlesden-Popper faults within the lattice images and quantify the local structure. Our semiautomated technique considers effects of finite projection thickness, limited fields of view, and lateral sampling rates. This method retains real-space distribution of layer variations allowing for spatial mapping of local n-phases to enable quantification of intergrowth occurrence and qualitative description of their distribution suitable for a wide range of layered materials.

Free-Carrier-Induced Ferroelectricity in Layered Perovskites

Doping ferroelectrics with carriers is often detrimental to polarization. This makes the design and discovery of metals that undergo a ferroelectriclike transition challenging. In this Letter, we show from first principles that the oxygen octahedral rotations in perovskites are often enhanced by electron doping, and this can be used as a means to strengthen the structural polarization in certain hybrid-improper ferroelectrics-compounds in which the polarization is not stabilized by the long-range Coulomb interactions but is instead induced by a trilinear coupling to octahedral rotations. We use this design strategy to predict a cation ordered Ruddlesden-Popper compound that can be driven into a metallic ferroelectriclike phase via electrolyte gating.

Anomalous dielectric behaviour during the monoclinic to tetragonal phase transition in La(Nb0.9V0.1)O4

The behaviour of ε_r in La(Nb_0.9V_0.1)O₄vs. temperature is anomalous and may have novel applications in composite ceramics.

One Structure, Two Elements-LuGe2 Superconductor vs Ordinary Metallic Conductor LuSn2. A Case Study on How Site-Selective Germanium for Tin Atom Substitution Leads to Modulating of the Charge Distribution

The substitution of chemically similar elements in a given crystal structure is an effective way to enhance physical properties, but the understanding on such improvements is usually impeded because the substitutions are random, and the roles of the different atoms cannot be distinguished by crystallographic symmetry. Herein, we provide a detailed crystallographic analysis and property measurements for the continuous solid solutions LuGe_xSn_2-x (0 < x < 2). The results show that there is no apparent change of the global symmetry, with the end-members LuGe₂ and LuSn₂, as well as the intermediate LuGe_xSn_2-x compositions adopting the ZrSi₂ type structure (space group Cmcm, Pearson index oC12). Yet, the refinements of the crystal structures from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data show that Ge-Sn atom substitutions are not random, but occur preferentially at the zigzag chain. The patterned distribution of two group 14 elements leads to a significant variation in chemical bonding and charge ordering within the other structural fragment, the 2D square nets, thereby resulting in tuned electron transport. The enhancement is greater than that for the typical Bloch-Gruneisen model and more akin to that for the parallel-resistor model. Magnetization measurements on single crystals show bulk superconductivity in all LuGe_xSn_2-x samples with shielding fractions as high as 90%. Specific heat data confirm the effect to originate from residual metallic tin in the material, indicating that Sn atom substitutions in the 2D square nets cause disruptions of the hypervalent bonding and local anisotropy, which ultimately leads to vanishing of the superconducting state in the end-member LuGe₂. This work sheds light on how the complexity in chemical interactions by two different carbon congeners leads to changes in the physical properties and how they can be correlated with the induced charge distribution. These studies also provide a general approach to modulation of charge density and. thus, of emerging physical properties in other classes of intermetallic systems based on the main-group elements of groups 13 to 15.
