The sensitivity of donor - acceptor charge transfer to molecular geometry in DAN - NDI based supramolecular flower-like self-assemblies

Polarization-Dependent Thin Films with Biaxial Anisotropic Absorption Constructed by a Single Coating and Subsequent Topochemical Polymerization of Chromophores

For the construction of hierarchical superstructures with biaxial anisotropic absorption, a newly synthesized diacetylene-functionalized bipyridinium is self-assembled to use an electron-accepting host for capturing and arranging guests. The formation of the donor-acceptor complex triggers an intermolecular charge transfer, leading to chromophore activation. Polarization-dependent multichroic thin films are prepared through a sequential process of single-coating, self-assembly, and topochemical polymerization of host-guest chromophores. Molecular packing structures constructed in the single-layer optical thin film possess orthogonal absorption axes for two different wavelengths. By tuning the linear polarization angle, the color of the optical thin film can be intentionally controlled. This single-layered multichroic film provides a new pathway for the development of anticounterfeiting and multiplexing encryptions.

Short Peptide-Based Smart Thixotropic Hydrogels †

Thixotropy is a fascinating feature present in many gel systems that has garnered a lot of attention in the medical field in recent decades. When shear stress is applied, the gel transforms into sol and immediately returns to its original state when resting. The thixotropic nature of the hydrogel has inspired scientists to entrap and release enzymes, therapeutics, and other substances inside the human body, where the gel acts as a drug reservoir and can sustainably release therapeutics. Furthermore, thixotropic hydrogels have been widely used in various therapeutic applications, including drug delivery, cornea regeneration and osteogenesis, to name a few. Because of their inherent biocompatibility and structural diversity, peptides are at the forefront of cutting-edge research in this context. This review will discuss the rational design and self-assembly of peptide-based thixotropic hydrogels with some representative examples, followed by their biomedical applications.

Selectively Altering the Reactivity of Transient Organic Radical Ions via Their Solvation Environment

Photoexcitation of the charge transfer band of electron donor-acceptor complexes composed of toluene and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene yields organic radical ion pairs whose ultrafast reactive dynamics are determined by equilibrium solvent properties. A comparative study of ultrafast reaction rates in a series of alkane alcohols identified their dependence on the local polarizability and hydrogen bond donating/accepting character of the solvent. Because of the rapid and efficient equilibration of these radical ion pairs into solvent-separated species, simple modifications to bulk conditions can be used as a means to selectively alter their decay rates. Selectively altering distinct stages in this photochemical cycle via cosolutes or additives is a valuable step toward understanding and controlling the reactivity of organic radical ions in complex environments.

Charge transfer in mixed and segregated stacks of tetrathiafulvalene, tetrathianaphthalene and naphthalene diimide: a structural, spectroscopic and computational study

We report the synthesis of novel charge transfer complexes consisting of TTF or TTN, and DPNI. A spectroscopic and computational approach is taken to elucidate charge transfer in these complexes.

Sequence-complementarity dependent co-assembly of phosphodiester-linked aromatic donor–acceptor trimers

Sequence-defined trimers of phosphodiester-linked aromatic donor–acceptors self-assemble according to monomer order, and co-assemble into new structures with their complementary sequence.

Tuning Rheological Behaviors of Supramolecular Aqueous Gels via Charge Transfer Interactions

Rheological properties are critical for determining real applications of supramolecular gels in various fields. Correspondingly, the modulation of gel rheology will be very important for meeting real requirements. In this aspect, a few strategies were applied to tune the rheological behaviors of supramolecular gels, but some specific interactions like charge transfer (CT) interactions were less explored at the molecular level. Herein, we report a pyrene-containing derivative of diphenylalanine as a donor gelator and naphthalenediimide or 3,5-dinitrobenzene as matching acceptor molecules. It was found that the viscoelastic properties and strength of the original gel could be tuned through addition of different acceptor molecules to the original gel with changing the ratios of the selected acceptor molecules. As a result, storage modulus was continuously adjusted over a wide range from 190,000 to 50,000 Pa by CT interactions. Furthermore, the mechanism of the CT-induced change in rheological properties was understood and clarified through relevant techniques (e.g., UV-Vis, fluorescence, and FT-IR spectroscopy and TEM). The findings in this work would provide a novel strategy to modulate the rheological properties of supramolecular gels for adaption to broader fields of real applications.

Charge Transfer Complexes of 1,3,6-Trinitro-9,10-phenanthrenequinone with Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds

Understanding the interactions of organic donor and acceptor molecules in binary associates is crucial for design and control of their functions. Herein, we carried out a theoretical study on the properties of charge transfer complexes of 1,3,6-trinitro-9,10-phenanthrenequinone (PQ) with 23 aromatic π-electron donors. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to obtain geometries, frontier orbital energy levels and amounts of charge transfer in the ground and first excited states. For the most effective donors, namely, dibenzotetrathiafulvalene, pentacene, tetrathiafulvalene, 5,10-dimethylphenazine, and tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine, the amount of charge transfer in the ground state was shown to be 0.134−0.240 e⁻. Further, a novel charge transfer complex of PQ with anthracene was isolated in crystalline form and its molecular and crystal structure elucidated by single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction.

Naphthalene diimides: perspectives and promise

In this review, we describe the developments in the field of naphthalene diimides (NDIs) from 2016 to the presentday. NDIs are shown to be an increasingly interesting class of molecules due to their electronic properties, large electron deficient aromatic cores and tendency to self-assemble into functional structures. Almost all NDIs possess high electron affinity, good charge carrier mobility, and excellent thermal and oxidative stability, making them promising candidates for applications in organic electronics, photovoltaic devices, and flexible displays. NDIs have also been extensively studied due to their potential real-world uses across a wide variety of applications including supramolecular chemistry, sensing, host-guest complexes for molecular switching devices, such as catenanes and rotaxanes, ion-channels, catalysis, and medicine and as non-fullerene accepters in solar cells. In recent years, NDI research with respect to supramolecular assemblies and mechanoluminescent properties has also gained considerable traction. Thus, this review will assist a wide range of readers and researchers including chemists, physicists, biologists, medicinal chemists and materials scientists in understanding the scope for development and applicability of NDI dyes in their respective fields through a discussion of the main properties of NDI derivatives and of the status of emerging applications.

Tuning the UV/Vis Absorption Spectra of Electrochromic Small Molecular Radicals Through Bridge Modulation

Studies on the optical properties of donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) materials in their radical anion state are rare but important. Such investigations can help to extend the application of DBA materials to opto-electrochemical devices and no longer limit them to optical physics research. In this work, a series of new DBA materials, TACzs, for overcoming this limitation are reported. All TACzs show strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in their photoexcited states, leading to noticeable solvatochromism. Besides, the electronic structures of their radical anions show great variability, displaying different absorption spectra and diverse colors. Moreover, the potential application of TACzs as electrochromic and electro-fluorochromic materials are discussed. This work demonstrates that manipulating the π bridge between the donor and acceptor in the DBA system is an effective pathway not only to tailor the ICT properties of materials in their neutral state, but also to tune the absorption characteristics of their radical anion state, which makes them very promising for applications in electroluminescent and electrochemical devices.

Reducing Energy Disorder of Hole Transport Layer by Charge Transfer Complex for High Performance p-i-n Perovskite Solar Cells

Solution-processed organic semiconductor charge-transport layers (OS-CTLs) with high mobility, low trap density, and energy level alignment have dominated the important progress in p-i-n planar perovskite solar cells (pero-SCs). Unfortunately, their inevitable long chains result in weak molecular stacking, which is likely to generate high energy disorder and deteriorate the charge-transport ability of OS-CTLs. Here, a charge-transfer complex (CTC) strategy to reduce the energy disorder in the OS-CTLs by doping an organic semiconductor, 4,4'-(4,8-bis(5-(trimethylsilyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl)bis(N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)aniline) (BDT-Si), in a commercial hole-transport layer (HTL), poly[bis(4-phenyl) (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine (PTAA), is proposed. The formation of the CTC makes the PTAA conjugated backbone electron-deficient, resulting in a quinoidal and stiffer character, which is likely to planarize the PTAA backbone and enhance the ordering of the film in nanoscale. The resultant HTL exhibits a reduced energy disorder, which simultaneously promotes hole transport in the HTL, hole extraction at the interface, energy level alignment, and quasi-Fermi level splitting in the device. As a result, the p-i-n planar pero-SCs with optimized HTL exhibit the best power conversion efficiency of 21.87% with good operating stability. This finding demonstrates that the CTC strategy is an effective way to reduce the energy disorder in HTLs and to improve the performance of planar pero-SCs.

Functionalized naphthalenediimide based supramolecular charge-transfer complexes via self-assembly and their photophysical properties

Two new intermolecular CT complexes having large Stokes shift (>170 nm) and significant fluorescence life-time (∼1.55 ns) have been prepared and exploited for cell imaging application.

Flower-Like Superstructures: Structural Features, Applications and Future Perspectives

Mimicking natural objects such as flowers, is an objective of scientists not only because of their attractive appearance, but also to understand the natural phenomena that underpin real world applications such as drug delivery, enzymatic reactions, electronics, and catalysis, to name few. This article reviews the types, preparation methods, and structural features of flower-like structures along with their key applications in various fields. We discuss the various types of flower-like structures composed of inorganic, organic-inorganic hybrid, inorganic-protein, inorganic-enzyme and organic compositions. We also discuss recent development in flower-like structures prepared by self-assembly approaches. Finally, we conclude our review with the future prospects of flower-like micro-structures in key fields, being biomedicine, sensing and catalysis.

Polyoxometalate-based room-temperature phosphorescent materials induced by anion–π interactions

A series of polyoxometalate-based host–guest materials emit strong red room-temperature phosphorescence attributed to intermolecular charge-transfer states which was caused by unorthodox anion–π interactions.

Stabilizing the Naphthalenediimide Radical within a Tetracationic Cyclophane

Organic radicals are of importance in developing smart materials that have paramagnetic and/or near-infrared optical properties. Their practical applications, however, are limited by the labile nature of the radicals. Here, we demonstrate that by using a tetracationic cyclophane, namely, cyclobis(4,4'-(1,4-phenylene)bispyridine-p-phenylene) (ExBox⁴⁺), to encapsulate a naphthalenediimide (NDI) guest, the redox properties of NDI can be modulated. In organic solvents such as MeCN or DMF, ExBox⁴⁺ is able to provide the surrounding Coulombic attraction to the NDI^•- radical anion and therefore enhance its stability toward oxidation. In water, NDI^•- is prone to dimerization, forming its (NDI^•-)₂ dimer. Under UV-light irradiation, the (NDI^•-)₂ dimer is observed to disproportionate and yield the dianionic NDI^2-. ExBox⁴⁺ is able to encapsulate the NDI^•- radical anion and prevent its dimerization, and as a consequence, the radical anion is protected from further reduction in a noncovalent manner. We believe that our strategy of modulating the redox properties of NDI by either host-guest recognition or mechanical interlocking can aid and abet the development of radical-based materials, which could be employed in pursuit of applications in many areas, such as transporting spin and charges.

Photoactive organic material discovery with combinatorial supramolecular assembly

Organic semiconductors have received substantial attention as active components in optoelectronic devices because of their processability and customizable properties. Tailoring the organic active layer in these devices to exhibit the desired optoelectronic properties requires understanding the complex and often subtle structure-property relationships governing their photophysical response to light. Both structural organization and molecular orbitals play pivotal roles, and their interactions with each other are difficult to anticipate based upon the structure of the components alone, especially in systems comprised of multiple components. In pursuit of design rules, there is a need to explore multicomponent systems combinatorially to access larger data sets, and supramolecularly to use error correcting, noncovalent assembly to achieve long-range order. This review will focus on the use of supramolecular chemistry to study combinatorial, hierarchical organic systems with emergent optoelectronic properties. Specifically, we will describe systems that undergo excited state deactivation by charge transfer (CT), singlet fission (SF), and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Adopting combinatorial, supramolecular assembly to study emergent photophysics promises to rapidly accelerate progress in this research field.

Ion-Pair Complexes of Pyrylium and Tetraarylborate as New Host-Guest Dyes: Photoinduced Electron Transfer Promoting Radical Polymerization

Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, NOESY-NMR, and EPR spectroscopy shed light on how π-π stacking interactions combined with electrostatic interactions can be used to form stable ion-pair complexes between pyrylium and tetraarylborate ions in which the interaction of the π-delocalized clouds promotes the observation of new radiative processes and also electron transfer processes excitation using visible light. The results exhibit a striking combination of properties, chemical stability and photophysical and photochemical events, that make these ion-pair complexes as a step toward the realization of chromophore/luminescent materials and also their use as a new monophotoinitiator system in radical polymerization reactions.

Nano-amino acid cellulose derivatives: Eco-synthesis, characterization, and antimicrobial properties

Nowadays the using of eco-systems to synthesize new materials is the promising issue. In this work, new eco-synthesis method was developed to prepare antimicrobial cellulosic-amino acid base ligand and complexes with copper. The complex was characterized via different instrumental analysis (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-vis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX)) as well as two antimicrobial screening tools (minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) and time required for killing). The UV-vis spectroscopic data indicates the metal to-ligand charge transfer transitions which is consistent with square planar geometry. DLS and SEM approved that the complex particles are in nano-size. Prepared complex appeared highly antimicrobial activity against all tested microbial organisms which can be described as broad spectrum antimicrobial agent. Rapid killing kinetics was beneficial in helping to resolve an infection more rapidly.

Raising the Bar in Aromatic Donor-Acceptor Interactions with Cyclic Trinuclear Gold(I) Complexes as Strong π-Donors

Aromatic donor-acceptor interactions are of high importance in supramolecular chemistry, materials science and biology. Compared to other noncovalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, the binding is often weak. Here we show that strong donor-acceptor interactions between planar aromatics with binding free energies down to -10.1 kcal mol^-1 and association constants of up to 2.34 × 10⁷ L mol^-1 for 1:1 complexes can be realized using cyclic trinuclear complexes of gold(I) with pyridinate, imidazolate, or carbeniate ligands. Data were obtained through NMR and UV/vis absorption spectroscopic studies and supported by quantum chemical calculations for a variety of acceptors. By using a specifically designed bridged naphthalene diimide-based acceptor with only one binding site, we furthermore show that a 1:2 (donor:acceptor) binding model is best suited to quantify the donor and acceptor/complex equilibrium. Scanning electron microscopy on selected donor-acceptor pairs shows crystalline supramolecular assemblies. We anticipate this study to be relevant for the future design of supramolecular systems and chemical sensors and the determination of binding energies between planar donors and acceptors.
