Piezoelectric Actuators in Smart Engineering Structures Using Robust Control

In this study, piezoelectric patches are used as actuators to dampen structural oscillations. Damping oscillations is a significant engineering challenge, and the use of piezoelectric patches in smart structures allows for a reduction in oscillations through sophisticated control methods. This analysis involved H-infinity (H∞) robust analysis. H∞ (H-infinity) control formulation is a robust control design method used to ensure system stability and performance under disturbances. When applied to piezoelectric actuators in smart structures, H∞ control aims to design controllers that are robust to variations in system dynamics, external disturbances, and modeling uncertainties, while meeting specified performance criteria. This study outlines the piezoelectric effects and advanced control strategies. A structural model was created using finite elements, and a smart structural model was analyzed. Subsequently, dynamic loads were applied and oscillation damping was successfully achieved by employing advanced control techniques.

Antiferromagnetic to Ferrimagnetic Phase Transition and Possible Phase Coexistence in Polar Magnets (Fe1-xMnx)2Mo3O8 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1)

In the present work, the magnetic properties of a single crystal (Fe_1-xMn_x)₂Mo₃O₈ (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) have been studied by performing extensive measurements. A detailed magnetic phase diagram is built up, in which the antiferromagnetic state dominates for x ≤ 0.25 and the ferrimagnetic phase arises for x ≥ 0.3. Meanwhile, a sizeable electric polarization of spin origin is commonly observed in all samples, no matter what the magnetic state is. For the samples hosting a ferrimagnetic state, square-like magnetic hysteresis loops are revealed, while the remnant magnetization and coercive field can be tuned drastically by simply varying the Mn content or temperature. A possible coexistence of the antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases is proposed to be responsible for the remarkable modulation of magnetic properties in the samples.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of SrFe12-xInxO19 Compounds for Magnetic Hyperthermia Applications

In this work, complex studies of the structure and magnetic properties of SrFe_12-xIn_xO₁₉ powders obtained by the mechanochemical and citrate methods were carried out. The solubility of In in strontium hexaferrite SrFe₁₂O₁₉ at 1200 °C was determined. The structure and properties of the powders were studied using X-ray diffraction analysis, Mössbauer spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Measurements of magnetic properties in magnetic fields up to 1600 kA/m were also performed. Additionally, the hyperthermia effect was investigated. The possibility of controlling the coercivity of the samples in the range from 188.9 kA/m to 22.3 kA/m and saturation magnetization from 63.5 A·m²/kg to 44.2 A·m²/kg with an increase in the degree of In doping was also demonstrated. Investigation of the magnetic hyperthermia of the samples was carried out by temperature measurement with an IR camera when they were introduced into alternating magnetic fields of various frequencies (144, 261 and 508 kHz) and amplitudes (between 11.96 and 19.94 kA/m). According to the study result, there was detected the heating of the SrFe_12-xIn_xO₁₉ sample (x = 1.7). The highest values of magnetic hyperthermia of the sample were observed in a 19.94 kA/m magnetic field and a frequency of 261 kHz. At a concentration of 56.67 g/L, the sample was heated from 23 to 41 °C within 2 min. The parameters SLP (specific loss power) and ILP (intrinsic loss power) were calculated.

Terahertz Faraday Rotation of SrFe12O19 Hexaferrites Enhanced by Nb Doping

The magneto-optical and dielectric behavior of M-type hexaferrites as permanent magnets in the THz band is essential for potential applications like microwave absorbers and antennas, while are rarely reported in recent years. In this work, single-phase SrFe_12-xNb_xO₁₉ hexaferrite ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state sintering method. Temperature dependence of dielectric parameters was investigated here to determine the relationship between dielectric response and magnetic phase transition. The saturated magnetization increases by nearly 12%, while the coercive field decreases by 30% in the x = 0.03 composition compared to that of the x = 0.00 sample. Besides, the Nb substitution improves the magneto-optical behavior in the THz band by comparing the Faraday rotation parameter from 0.75 (x = 0.00) to 1.30 (x = 0.03). The changes in the magnetic properties are explained by a composition-driven increase of the net magnetic moment and enhanced ferromagnetic exchange coupling. The substitution of the donor dopant Nb on the Fe site is a feasible way to obtain multifunctional M-type hexaferrites as preferred candidates for permanent magnets, sensors, and other electronic devices.

Creation and Magnetic Study of Ferrites with Magnetoplumbite Structure Multisubstituted by Al3+, Cr3+, Ga3+, and In3+ Cations

Multisubstituted barium ferrites with a magnetoplumbite structure were obtained by the method of solid-phase reactions with ferritization and pre-firing. Three-charged, mainly diamagnetic cations Al³⁺, Cr³⁺, Ga³⁺, and In³⁺ were chosen as substituents for the Fe³⁺ iron cations, the proportion of which in solid solutions did not exceed 50%. The values of the configurational mixing entropy were calculated for all the compositions. A slight deviation of the chemical composition of the obtained solid solutions from the nominal value was established by the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy method. The phase purity and values of the unit cell parameters were refined from X-ray scattering data using full-profile analysis in the Rietveld method. A non-monotonic behavior of the unit cell parameters as a function of the B-sub-lattice average ionic radius of the magnetoplumbite structure was found. A minimum unit cell volume of ~667.15 ų was found for the composition BaFe_6.11Al_1.56Cr_2.17Ga_2.16O₁₉ with a B-sub-lattice average ionic radius of ~7.449 Å. The average crystallite size varied within 5.5–6.5 μm. The temperature and field dependencies of the magnetization have been measured. The values of the saturation magnetization, residual magnetization, hysteresis loop squareness, and coercivity at 50 K and 300 K were extracted from the experimental data. Using the Law of Approach to Saturation, the magnetic crystallographic anisotropy coefficient and anisotropy field were calculated. Multisubstitution leads to a significant decrease in such magnetic parameters as the magnetic ordering temperature and spontaneous magnetization at both temperatures. The maximum magnetic ordering temperature of ~297.7 K was found for the composition BaFe_5.84Ga_6.19O₁₉ with a B-sub-lattice average ionic radius of ~7.586 Å in a field of 500 Oe. A maximum saturation magnetization of ~24.7 emu/g was found for the composition BaFe_5.84Ga_6.19O₁₉ with a B-sub-lattice average ionic radius of ~7.586 Å at 50 K. A maximum hysteresis loop squareness of ~0.72 was found for the composition BaFe_6.11Al_1.56Cr_2.17Ga_2.16O₁₉ with an average ionic radius of ~7.449 Å at 50 K. A maximum magnetic crystallographic anisotropy coefficient of ~2.09 × 10⁵ Erg/g was found for the composition BaFe_6.19Al_1.25Cr_1.57Ga_1.74In_1.26O₁₉ with a B-sub-lattice average ionic radius of ~7.706 Å at 50 K. The frustrated magnetic state including the nano-sized clusters with an average diameter in the range of 50–200 nm was established from the results of measuring the ZFC and FC temperature magnetizations. The interpretation of the obtained experimental data is carried out taking into account the increased stability of high-entropy phases and regular changes in the intensity of the Fe³⁺(Al³⁺, Cr³⁺, Ga³⁺, In³⁺)–O²⁻–Fe³⁺(Al³⁺, Cr³⁺, Ga³⁺, In³⁺) indirect superexchange interactions as a result of magnetic dilution of the iron sub-lattice in the magnetoplumbite structure.

A-Site Cation Size Effect on Structure and Magnetic Properties of Sm(Eu,Gd)Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2O3 High-Entropy Solid Solutions

Three high-entropy Sm(Eu,Gd)Cr_0.2Mn_0.2Fe_0.2Co_0.2Ni_0.2O₃ perovskite solid solutions were synthesized using the usual ceramic technology. The XRD investigation at room temperature established a single-phase perovskite product. The Rietveld refinement with the FullProf computer program in the frame of the orthorhombic Pnma (No 62) space group was realized. Along with a decrease in the V unit cell volume from ~224.33 ų for the Sm-based sample down to ~221.52 ų for the Gd-based sample, an opposite tendency was observed for the unit cell parameters as the ordinal number of the rare-earth cation increased. The average grain size was in the range of 5–8 μm. Field magnetization was measured up to 30 kOe at 50 K and 300 K. The law of approach to saturation was used to determine the M_s spontaneous magnetization that nonlinearly increased from ~1.89 emu/g (Sm) up to ~17.49 emu/g (Gd) and from ~0.59 emu/g (Sm) up to ~3.16 emu/g (Gd) at 50 K and 300 K, respectively. The M_r residual magnetization and H_c coercive force were also determined, while the SQR loop squareness, k magnetic crystallographic anisotropy coefficient, and H_a anisotropy field were calculated. Temperature magnetization was measured in a field of 30 kOe. ZFC and FC magnetization curves were fixed in a field of 100 Oe. It was discovered that the T_mo magnetic ordering temperature downward-curve decreased from ~137.98 K (Sm) down to ~133.99 K (Gd). The spin glass state with ferromagnetic nanoinclusions for all the samples was observed. The <D> average and D_max maximum diameter of ferromagnetic nanoinclusions were calculated and they were in the range of 40–50 nm and 160–180 nm, respectively. The mechanism of magnetic state formation is discussed in terms of the effects of the A-site cation size and B-site poly-substitution on the indirect superexchange interactions.
