The superior performance of silica gel supported nano zero-valent iron for simultaneous removal of Cr (VI)

Pectin-nano zero valent iron nanocomposites for efficient heavy metal removal and bactericidal action against waterborne pathogens - Innovative green solution towards environmental sustainability

This study investigated the effectiveness of a pectin-nano zero-valent iron-based nanocomposite in adsorbing heavy metals in bimetallic form (chromium‑lead mixture), along with assessing its antibacterial properties. The nanocomposite was synthesized using a straightforward dispersion method, employing eco-friendly components like biocompatible pectin sourced from banana peels and nano-scale zero-valent iron. Analytical characterization confirmed the formation of stable, nano-crystalline particles with active interactions between the functional groups of pectin and nano iron. Batch adsorption experiments optimized various parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, metal ion concentration, and temperature to enhance bimetal removal from water. The optimal conditions were determined as pH 8.0, a temperature of 40 °C, 1.0 g/L adsorbent dosage, 75 mg/l initial bimetal concentration, and a contact time of 30 min. Further assessments revealed that the nanocomposite did not induce phytotoxic or ecotoxic effects, confirming its non-toxicity and environmental safety. Biocompatibility studies conducted using zebrafish models showed no adverse effects on hatching, survival, or heart rate. These findings underscore the potential of the nanocomposite as a sustainable and efficient solution for heavy metal remediation in water treatment process.

Nonmetallic modified zero-valent iron for remediating halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals: A comprehensive review

Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), an ideal reductant treating persistent pollutants, is hampered by issues like corrosion, passivation, and suboptimal utilization. Recent advancements in nonmetallic modified ZVI (NM-ZVI) show promising potential in circumventing these challenges by modifying ZVI's surface and internal physicochemical properties. Despite its promise, a thorough synthesis of research advancements in this domain remains elusive. Here we review the innovative methodologies, regulatory principles, and reduction-centric mechanisms underpinning NM-ZVI's effectiveness against two prevalent persistent pollutants: halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals. We start by evaluating different nonmetallic modification techniques, such as liquid-phase reduction, mechanical ball milling, and pyrolysis, and their respective advantages. The discussion progresses towards a critical analysis of current strategies and mechanisms used for NM-ZVI to enhance its reactivity, electron selectivity, and electron utilization efficiency. This is achieved by optimizing the elemental compositions, content ratios, lattice constants, hydrophobicity, and conductivity. Furthermore, we propose novel approaches for augmenting NM-ZVI's capability to address complex pollution challenges. This review highlights NM-ZVI's potential as an alternative to remediate water environments contaminated with halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals, contributing to the broader discourse on green remediation technologies.

Green synthesis of Carbonized Chitosan-Fe3O4-SiO2 nano-composite for adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solutions

Water pollution with heavy metals owing to industrial and agricultural activities have become a critical dilemma to humans, plants as well as the marine environment. Therefore, it is of great importance that the carcinogenic heavy metals present in wastewater to be eliminated through designing treatment technologies that can remove multiple pollutants. A novel green magnetic nano-composite called (Carbonized Chitosan-Fe3O4-SiO2) was synthesized using Co-precipitation method to adsorb a mixture of heavy metal ions included; cobalt (Co2+), nickel (Ni2+) and copper (Cu2+) ions from aqueous solutions. The novelty of this study was the synthesis of a new nano-composite which was green with magnetic properties to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Its magnetic properties made it separated easily from solutions after accomplishment of the adsorption process using a magnet. Extended Freundlich isotherm was the best fitted model with maximum adsorption capacity of the metal ions mixture 2908.92 mg/g. Different experimental parameters have been studied included the initial concentration for a mixture of nickel, cobalt and copper metal ions (0.05-0.1 molar), dosage of adsorbent (0.5-3.5 g/L) and contact time (6-90 min) to investigate their changing effect on the removal percents of the heavy metal ions mixture from aqueous solutions. The experimental adsorption percent of cobalt ion ranged from 1.58 to 64.28%, nickel ion adsorption percent ranged from 10.68 to 94.12% and copper ion adsorption percent ranged from 4.41 to 76.23% at pH = 9 were based on the combination of the adsorption process parameters.

Chemical activation and magnetization of carbonaceous materials fabricated from waste plastics and their evaluation for methylene blue adsorption

In this study, novel adsorbents were synthesized via the activation and magnetization of carbon spheres, graphene, and carbon nanotubes fabricated from plastics to improve their surface area and porosity and facilitate their separation from aqueous solutions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy "FTIR", X-ray diffraction "XRD", energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy "EDX", transmission electron microscope "TEM", and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy "XPS" affirmed the successful activation and magnetization of the fabricated materials. Further, surface area analysis showed that the activation and magnetization enhanced the surface area. The weight loss ratio decreased from nearly 60% in the case of activated graphene to around 25% after magnetization, and the same trend was observed in the other materials confirming that magnetization improved the thermal stability of the fabricated materials. The prepared carbonaceous materials showed superparamagnetic properties according to the magnetic saturation values obtained from vibrating sample magnetometry analysis, where the magnetic saturation values were 33.77, 38.75, and 27.18 emu/g in the presence of magnetic activated carbon spheres, graphene, and carbon nanotubes, respectively. The adsorption efficiencies of methylene blue (MB) were 76.9%, 96.3%, and 74.8% in the presence of magnetic activated carbon spheres, graphene, and carbon nanotubes, respectively. This study proposes efficient adsorbents with low cost and high adsorption efficiency that can be applied on an industrial scale to remove emerging pollutants.

Sustainable synthesis of magnetic petroleum coke/nonanyl chitosan composite for efficient removal of o-nitrophenol

Worldwide industrialization has grown at a rapid pace, contaminating water resources, particularly with phenolic pollutants that pose a risk to aquatic systems and human health. The goal of this study is to create an inexpensive magnetic composite that can effectively remove nitrophenol (o-NP) using adsorptive means. In this instance, a nonanyl chitosan (N-Cs) derivative was synthesized and then combined with activated petroleum coke (AP-coke) and magnetic Fe3O4 to boost its adsorbability towards o-NP and to facilitate its separation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and zeta potential were employed to characterize the magnetic composite. The experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4/AP-coke/N-Cs composite possesses a greater affinity toward o-NP with a maximal efficiency reached 88% compared to 22.8, 31.2, and 45.8% for Fe3O4, AP-coke and N-Cs, respectively. The equilibrium adsorption data coincided with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 291.55 mg/g at pH 6, whereas the pseudo second order kinetic model offered the best fit to the experimental data. Besides, the developed adsorbent preserved satisfactory adsorption characteristics after reuse for five successive cycles. The proposed adsorption mechanism involves the H-bonding, π-π interaction, hydrophobic interactions and electron donor-acceptor interactions. These findings hypothesize that the constructed magnetic composite could efficiently remove nitrophenols from polluted water with high performance and ease-separation.

Enhanced Adsorptivity of Hexavalent Chromium in Aqueous Solutions Using CTS@nZVI Modified Wheat Straw-Derived Porous Carbon

Using KOH-modified wheat straw as the precursor, wheat straw biochar was produced through carbonization at 500 °C. Subsequently, a synthetic material containing nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) was prepared via liquid phase reduction (nZVI-WSPC). To enhance its properties, chitosan (CTS) was used by crosslinking to form the new adsorbent named CTS@nZVI-WSPC. The impact of CTS on parameters such as mass ratio, initial pH value, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) in solution was investigated through one-factor experiments. Isotherm adsorption and thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the adsorption of Cr(VI) by CTS@nZVI-WSPC conforms to the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 147.93 mg/g, and the adsorption process is endothermic. Kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism, as elucidated by SEM, FTIR, XPS, and XRD, suggests that the process may involve multiple mechanisms, including pore adsorption, electrostatic adsorption, chemical reduction, and surface chelation. The adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) by CTS@nZVI-WSPC remains high after five cycles. The adsorbent is simple to operate, economical, efficient, and reusable, making it a promising candidate for the treatment of Cr(VI) in water.

Construction of attapulgite decorated cetylpyridinium bromide/cellulose acetate composite beads for removal of Cr (VI) ions with emphasis on mechanistic insights

Eco-friendly and renewable composite beads were constructed for efficient adsorptive removal of Cr (VI) ions. Attapulgite (ATP) clay decorated with cetylpyridinium bromide (CPBr) was impregnated into cellulose acetate (CA) beads, which were formulated through a simple and cost-effective solvent-exchange approach. FTIR, XRD, SEM, Zeta potential, and XPS characterization tools verified the successful formation of ATP-CPBr@CA beads. The composite beads displayed a spherical and porous shape with a positively charged surface (26.6 mV) at pH 2. In addition, higher adsorption performance was accomplished by ATP-CPBr@CA composite beads with ease of separation compared to their components. Meanwhile, equilibrium isotherms pointed out that the Langmuir model was optimal for describing the adsorption process of Cr (VI) with a maximal adsorption capacity of 302 mg/g. Moreover, the D-R isotherm model verified the physical adsorption process, while adsorption data obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Further, XPS results hypothesized that the removal mechanism involves adsorption via electrostatic interactions, redox reaction, and co-precipitation. Interestingly, the ATP-CPBr@CA composite beads reserved tolerable adsorption characteristics with a maximum removal present exceeding 70% after reuse for seven successive cycles, proposing its feasible applicability as a reusable and easy-separable candidate for removing heavy metals from aquatic bodies.

Machine learning-powered estimation of malachite green photocatalytic degradation with NML-BiFeO3 composites

This study explores the potential of photocatalytic degradation using novel NML-BiFeO3 (noble metal-incorporated bismuth ferrite) compounds for eliminating malachite green (MG) dye from wastewater. The effectiveness of various Gaussian process regression (GPR) models in predicting MG degradation is investigated. Four GPR models (Matern, Exponential, Squared Exponential, and Rational Quadratic) were employed to analyze a dataset of 1200 observations encompassing various experimental conditions. The models have considered ten input variables, including catalyst properties, solution characteristics, and operational parameters. The Exponential kernel-based GPR model achieved the best performance, with a near-perfect R2 value of 1.0, indicating exceptional accuracy in predicting MG degradation. Sensitivity analysis revealed process time as the most critical factor influencing MG degradation, followed by pore volume, catalyst loading, light intensity, catalyst type, pH, anion type, surface area, and humic acid concentration. This highlights the complex interplay between these factors in the degradation process. The reliability of the models was confirmed by outlier detection using William's plot, demonstrating a minimal number of outliers (66-71 data points depending on the model). This indicates the robustness of the data utilized for model development. This study suggests that NML-BiFeO3 composites hold promise for wastewater treatment and that GPR models, particularly Matern-GPR, offer a powerful tool for predicting MG degradation. Identifying fundamental catalyst properties can expedite the application of NML-BiFeO3, leading to optimized wastewater treatment processes. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into using NML-BiFeO3 compounds and machine learning for efficient MG removal from wastewater.

Novel mint-stalks derived biochar for the adsorption of methylene blue dye: Effect of operating parameters, adsorption mechanism, kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics

The pyrolysis of mint stalks and lemon peels was performed to synthesize mint-stalks (MBC) and lemon-peels (LBC) derived biochars for adsorbing methylene blue (MB). The preparation, characterization, and application of MBC in adsorption have not been reported in the literature. MBC showed higher surface area and carbon content than that of LBC. The removal ratios of MB were 87.5% and 60% within 90 min for MBC and LBC, respectively at pH 7, temperature of 30oC, adsorbent dose of 0.5 g/L, and MB concentration of 5 mg/L. The optimal MBC dose was 1 g/L achieving a removal efficiency of 93.6% at pH 7, temperature of 30oC, contact time of 90 min, and initial dye concentration of 5.0 mg/L. The adsorption efficiency decreased from 98.6% to 31.33% by raising the dye concentration from 3.0 mg/L to 30 mg/L. Further, the increase of adsorbent dose to 10 g/L could achieve 94.2%, 90.3%, 87.6%, and 84.1% removal efficiencies of MB in the case of initial concentrations of 200 mg/L, 300 mg/L, 400 mg/L, and 500 mg/L, respectively. MBC showed high stability in adsorbing MB under five cycles, and the performed analyses after adsorption reaffirmed the stability of MBC. The adsorption mechanism indicated that the adsorption of MB molecules on the biochar's surface was mainly because of the electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π stacking. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models could efficiently describe the adsorption of MB on the prepared biochar. The adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous based on the adsorption thermodynamics. The proposed adsorption system is promising and can be implemented on a bigger scale. Moreover, the prepared biochar can be implemented in other applications such as photocatalysis, periodate, and persulfate activation-based advanced oxidation processes.

Catalytic fabrication of graphene, carbon spheres, and carbon nanotubes from plastic waste

In this study, we reported sustainable and economical upcycling methods for utilizing plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) compiled from the garbage of a residential area as cheap precursors for the production of high-value carbon materials such as graphene (G), carbon spheres (CS), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using different thermal treatment techniques. Graphene, carbon spheres, and carbon nanotubes were successfully synthesized from PET, PP, and PET, respectively via catalytic pyrolysis. XRD and FTIR analyses were conducted on the three materials, confirming the formation of carbon and their graphitic structure. TEM images displayed uniform and consistent morphological structures of the fabricated materials. EDX data confirmed that the prepared carbon-based materials only contained carbon and oxygen without any significant contaminations. XPS results revealed significant peaks in the C 1s spectra associated with sp2 and sp3 hybridized carbon for the three materials. BET spectra showed that the prepared CNTs (54.872 m2 g-1) have the highest surface area followed by carbon spheres (54.807 m2 g-1). The thermal stability of graphene surpassed both carbon spheres and carbon nanotubes which is mainly attributed to the stronger inter-molecular bonds of graphene. Based on the characterization of the prepared materials, these materials are promising to be utilized in environmental remediation applications due to their high carbon content, low cost, and high surface area.

Tocilizumab degradation via photo-catalytic ozonation process from aqueous

Following the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, tocilizumab has emerged as a potentially efficacious therapeutic intervention. The utilization of O3-Heterogeneous photocatalytic process (O3-HPCP) as a hybrid advanced oxidation technique has been employed for the degradation of pollutants. The present study employed a solvothermal technique for the synthesis of the BiOI-MOF composite. The utilization of FTIR, FESEM, EDAX, XRD, UV-vis, BET, TEM, and XPS analysis was employed to confirm the exceptional quality of the catalyst. the study employed an experimental design, subsequently followed by the analysis of collected data in order to forecast the most favorable conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of several factors, including reaction time (30-60 min), catalyst dose (0.25-0.5 mg/L), pH levels (4-8), ozone concentration (20-40 mMol/L), and tocilizumab concentration (10-20 mg/L), on the performance of O3-HPCP. The best model was discovered by evaluating the F-value and P-value coefficients, which were found to be 0.0001 and 347.93, respectively. In the given experimental conditions, which include a catalyst dose of 0.46 mg/L, a reaction time of 59 min, a pH of 7.0, and an ozone concentration of 32 mMol/L, the removal efficiencies were found to be 92% for tocilizumab, 79.8% for COD, and 59% for TOC. The obtained R2 value of 0.98 suggests a strong correlation between the observed data and the predicted values, indicating that the reaction rate followed first-order kinetics. The coefficient of synergy for the degradation of tocilizumab was shown to be 1.22. The catalyst exhibited satisfactory outcomes, but with a marginal reduction in efficacy of approximately 3%. The sulfate ion (SO42-) exhibited no influence on process efficiency, whereas the nitrate ion (NO3-) exerted the most significant impact among the anions. The progress of the process was impeded by organic scavengers, with methanol exhibiting the most pronounced influence and sodium azide exerting the least significant impact. The efficacy of pure BiOI and NH2-MIL125 (Ti) was diminished when employed in their pure form state. The energy consumption per unit of degradation, denoted as EEO, was determined to be 161.8 KWh/m3-order.

Facile synthesis of ZnO/Hal nanocomposite for arsenite (As(III)) removal from aqueous media

Arsenite (As(III)) is the most toxic form of arsenic that is a serious concern for water contamination worldwide. Herein a ZnO/Halloysite (Hal) nanocomposite was prepared by the chemical bath deposition method (CBD) through seed-mediated ZnO growth on the halloysite for eliminating As(III) from the aqueous solution. The growth of ZnO on seeded halloysite was investigated based on the HMTA: Zn2+ molar ratio in the solution. An optimum molar ratio of HMTA:Zn for nucleation and growth of ZnO upon halloysite was obtained 1:2 based on morphological analysis. The TGA results confirmed that thermal stability of HNT was enhanced by ZnO decoration. The prepared ZnO/Hal nanocomposite at optimal conditions was employed for arsenite (As(III)) removal from aqueous solutions. Experimental data were evaluated with different isothermal, thermodynamic, and kinetic models. Based on the zeta potential results, Hal nanocomposites had a greater negative value than pure Hal. Therefore, the ZnO/Hal nanocomposite exhibited efficient As(III) adsorption with a removal efficiency of 76% compared to pure Hal with a removal efficiency of 5%. Adsorption isotherm was well correlated by both non-linear Langmuir and Sips models, exhibiting maximum adsorption capacity of As(III) at 42.07 mg/g, and 42.5 mg/g, respectively. As a result of the study, it was found that the fabricated Hal nanocomposite with low toxicity can be used effectively in water treatment.

Addressing the issue of surface mechanisms and competitive effects in Cr(VI) reductive-adsorption on tin-hydroxyapatite in the presence of co-ions

Our group recently proposed an innovative sustainable reductant-adsorbent material, tin(II)-hydroxyapatite (Sn/HAP, ca. 10 wt% Sn) for the interfacial Cr(VI) reductive adsorption process. In this study, Cr(VI) removal capacity was evaluated in multi-component solutions containing representative background ions (i.e., CaCl2, Ca(NO3)2, MgSO4, Na2SO4, Fe(NO3)3, AlCl3, Zn(NO3)2, or Mn(NO3)2). Sn/HAP was able to reduce Cr(VI) with complete Cr3+ adsorption on HAP surface, except in the presence of Fe3+ and Al3+ ions. Some metal ions co-existing in solution, such as Fe3+, Al3+, Zn2+, and Mn2+, were also adsorbed on HAP surface. Reuse experiments of the Sn/HAP sample, up to 7 runs, resulted in a total amount of reduced Cr(VI) of ca. 15-18 mg g-1. Fast kinetics of Cr(VI) reductive adsorption at 25 °C in a multi-metal component solution was observed. The pseudo-second order model was in excellent agreement with the experimental kinetic data, leading to a rate constant (k25°C) value of ca. 30 M-1 s-1. The collection of adsorption isotherms of Cr3+ and Fe3+, together with TEM-EDX analysis permitted the unveiling of competitive adsorption phenomena between metal ions. The obtained results demonstrate that Sn/HAP could be an efficient material for the removal of hexavalent chromium in aqueous solutions containing high concentrations of inorganic impurities.

Development of cellulose/hydroxyapatite/TiO2 scaffolds for efficient removal of lead (II) ions pollution: Characterization, kinetic analysis, and artificial neural network modeling

The utilization of nano-biodegradable composites for removing pollutants and heavy metals in aquatic environments has been widespread. This study focuses on synthesizing cellulose/hydroxyapatite nanocomposites with titanium dioxide (TiO2) via the freeze-drying method for the adsorption of lead ions in aquatic environments. The physical and chemical properties of the nanocomposites, including structure, morphology, and mechanical properties, were analyzed through FTIR, XRD, SEM, and EDS. In addition, parameters affecting the adsorption capacity, such as time, temperature, pH, and initial concentration, were determined. The nanocomposite exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1012 mg⸱g-1, and the second-order kinetic model was found to govern the adsorption process. Additionally, an artificial neural network (ANN) was created using weight percentages (wt%) of nanoparticles included in the scaffold to predict the mechanical behavior, porosity, and desorption of the scaffolds at various weight percentages of hydroxyapatite (nHAP) and TiO2. The results of the ANN indicated that the incorporation of both single and hybrid nanoparticles into the scaffolds improved their mechanical behavior and desorption, as well as increased their porosity.

A novel Corchorus olitorius-derived biochar/Bi12O17Cl2 photocatalyst for decontamination of antibiotic wastewater containing tetracycline under natural visible light

Herein, a novel composite of Corchorus olitorius-derived biochar and Bi12O17Cl2 was fabricated and utilized for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) in a solar photo-oxidation reactor. The morphology, chemical composition, and interaction between the composite components were studied using various analyses. The biochar showed a TC removal of 52.7% and COD mineralization of 59.6% using 150 mg/L of the biochar at a pH of 4.7 ± 0.5, initial TC concentration of 163 mg/L, and initial COD of 1244 mg/L. The degradation efficiency of TC increased to 63% and the mineralization ratio to 64.7% using 150 mg/L of bare Bi12O17Cl2 at a pH of 4.7 ± 0.5, initial TC concentration of 178 mg/L, and COD of 1034 mg/L. In the case of biochar/Bi12O17Cl2 composite, the degradation efficiency of TC and COD mineralization ratio improved to 85.8% and 77.7% due to the potential of biochar to accept electrons which retarded the recombination of electrons and holes. The synthesized composite exhibited high stability over four succeeding cycles. According to the generated intermediates, TC could be degraded to caprylic acid and pentanedioic acid via the frequent attack by the reactive species. The prepared composite is a promising photocatalyst and can be applied in large-scale systems due to its high degradation and mineralization performance in a short time besides its low cost and stability.
