Correlated shapeshifting and configurational isomerization

Herein we demonstrate that the rapid 'shapeshifting' constitutional isomerization of a substituted bullvalene is influenced by the E-to-Z configurational isomerization of a remote carbamate group, giving rise to correlated motion. We find that, while the E-configurational isomer of a bulky carbamate favors the β-bullvalene constitutional isomer, a noncovalent bonding interaction within the Z-carbamate tips the equilibrium toward the γ-bullvalene form. Using DFT modelling and NMR spectroscopy, this long-range interaction is identified as being between the bullvalene core and a pendant phenyl group connected to the carbamate. Coupling the constitutional changes of a bullvalene to a reciprocal configurational isomerization through a long-range interaction in this way will allow shapeshifting rearrangements to be exploited as part of collective motion in extended structures.

Unprecedented Richness of Temperature- and Pressure-Induced Polymorphism in 1D Lead Iodide Perovskite

Inherent features of metal halide perovskites are their softness, complex lattice dynamics, and phase transitions spectacularly tuning their structures and properties. While the structural transformations are well described and classified in 3D perovskites, their 1D analogs are much less understood. Herein, both temperature- and pressure-dependent structural evolutions of a 1D AcaPbI3 perovskitoid incorporating acetamidinium (Aca) cation are examined. The study reveals the existence of nine phases of δ-AcaPbI3, which present the most diverse polymorphic collection among known perovskite materials. Interestingly, temperature- and pressure-triggered phase transitions in the 1D perovskotoid exhibit fundamentally different natures: the thermal transformations are mainly associated with the collective translations of rigid polyanionic units and ordering/disordering dynamics of Aca cations, while the compression primarily affects inorganic polymer chains. Moreover, in the 1-D chains featuring the face-sharing connection mode of the PbI6 octahedra the Pb···Pb distances are significantly shortened compared to the corner-sharing 3D perovskite frameworks, hence operating in the van der Waals territory. Strikingly, a good correlation is found between the Pb···Pb distances and the pressure evolution of the bandgap values in the δ-AcaPbI3, indicating that in 1D perovskitoid structures, the contacts between Pb2+ ions are one of the critical parameters determining their properties.

Spectroscopic Identification of Charge Transfer of Thiolated Molecules on Gold Nanoparticles via Gold Nanoclusters

Investigation of charge transfer needs analytical tools that could reveal this phenomenon, and enables understanding of its effect at the molecular level. Here, we show how the combination of using gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and different spectroscopic techniques could be employed to investigate the charge transfer of thiolated molecules on gold nanoparticles (AuNP@Mol). It was found that the charge transfer effect in the thiolated molecule could be affected by AuNCs, evidenced by the amplification of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal of the molecule and changes in fluorescence lifetime of AuNCs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that AuNCs could amplify the charge transfer process at the molecular level by pumping electrons to the surface of AuNPs. Finite element method (FEM) simulations also showed that the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism along with chemical enhancement determines the SERS improvement in the thiolated molecule. This study provides a mechanistic insight into the investigation of charge transfer at the molecular level between organic and inorganic compounds, which is of great importance in designing new nanocomposite systems. Additionally, this work demonstrates the potential of SERS as a powerful analytical tool that could be used in nanochemistry, material science, energy, and biomedical fields.

Hydrocarbon Sorption in Flexible MOFs-Part III: Modulation of Gas Separation Mechanisms

Single gas sorption experiments with the C4-hydrocarbons n-butane, iso-butane, 1-butene and iso-butene on the flexible MOFs Cu-IHMe-pw and Cu-IHEt-pw were carried out with both thermodynamic equilibrium and overall sorption kinetics. Subsequent static binary gas mixture experiments of n-butane and iso-butane unveil a complex dependence of the overall selectivity on sorption enthalpy, rate of structural transition as well as steric effects. A thermodynamic separation favoring iso-butane as well as kinetic separation favoring n-butane are possible within Cu-IHMe-pw while complete size exclusion of iso-butane is achieved in Cu-IHEt-pw. This proof-of-concept study shows that the structural flexibility offers additional levers for the precise modulation of the separation mechanisms for complex mixtures with similar chemical and physical properties with real selectivities of >10.
