Association of body weight with sexual function in women

The association between female sexual function and metabolic features of the polycystic ovary syndrome in Turkish women of reproductive age

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the association between female sexual function and metabolic features among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) during reproductive age.

METHOD

This was a cross-sectional study in which 288 women with PCOS and 180 women without PCOS between the ages of 20 and 40 years were evaluated. All women had serum total testosterone, androstenedione, DHEA-S, fasting glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and triglyceride levels analyzed. The McCoy Female Sexual Questionnaire (MFSQ) was applied to all studied women. Exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were done after data collection. The factor loadings of MFSQ domains were compared between women with PCOS and controls.

RESULTS

Average factor loadings of the MFSQ sexuality domain and MFSQ sexual partner domain were significantly lower in the PCOS group when compared to controls. There was no correlation between the two sexual function domains of the MFSQ and the PCOS features either in the PCOS group or the controls.

CONCLUSION

PCOS is a heterogeneous disease with different metabolic components, such as insulin resistance, obesity, and hyperandrogenism. Although sexual function among women with PCOS was lower than controls, no differences were found in metabolic features of the PCOS and non-PCOS groups with relation to sexual function determined by the MFSQ.

Obesity and sexual health: focus on postmenopausal women

Menopause is a cardiometabolic transition with many women experiencing weight gain and redistribution of body fat. Hormonal changes may affect also several dimensions of well-being, including sexual function, with a high rate of female sexual dysfunction (FSD), which displays a multifactorial etiology. The most important biological factors range from chronic low-grade inflammation, associated with hypertrophic adipocytes that may translate into endothelial dysfunction and compromised blood flow through the genitourinary system, to insulin resistance and other neuroendocrine mechanisms targeting the sexual response. Psychosocial factors include poor body image, mood disorders, low self-esteem and life satisfaction, as well as partner's health and quality of relationship, and social stigma. Even unhealthy lifestyle, chronic conditions and putative weight-promoting medications may play a role. The aim of the present narrative review is to update and summarize the state of the art on the link between obesity and FSD in postmenopausal women, pointing to the paucity of high-quality studies and the need for further research with validated end points to assess both biomarkers of obesity and FSD. In addition, we provide general information on the diagnosis and treatment of FSD at menopause with a focus on dietary interventions, physical activity, anti-obesity drugs and bariatric surgery.

Association between obesity and female sexual dysfunction: a review

INTRODUCTION

Obesity is a global health crisis that has been growing over the past few decades. The economic burden associated with obesity is substantial as it is associated with multiple disabling chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, osteoarthritis, chronic pain, and mental illness. Obesity is known to be a risk factor for sexual dysfunction in men, but this association is less well understood in women.

AIMS

To provide a narrative review of the available literature on the relationship between overweight/obesity and female sexual dysfunction, elaborate on the possible mechanisms explaining this association, and discuss the effects of weight loss on sexual function in those with obesity.

METHODS

A search of the medical literature was carried out in PubMed and Medline, focusing on original research and systematic reviews of original research on obesity and sexual function in women.

RESULTS

The relationship between obesity and female sexual function is not consistent across studies. While women with obesity are more likely to have worse sexual function and avoid sexual activity, many studies have failed to identify these associations. Lifestyle changes resulting in weight loss lead to better sexual function, and bariatric surgery has been shown to improve sexual function in the first couple of years following the procedure; yet, the long-term effects of weight loss and bariatric surgery are still uncertain.

CONCLUSIONS

The evidence on the relationship between obesity and female sexual function is mixed. Nevertheless, weight loss has been shown to improve sexual function in women with obesity. The impact of weight loss medications and the long-term effect of bariatric surgery on female sexual function require further study.

Sexual Function and Satisfaction in the Context of Obesity

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Sexual dysfunction is commonly associated with overweight/obesity, but the underlying physiological and psychosocial mechanisms are not fully understood. This review contextualizes the obesity-sexual (dys)function relationship, describes recent insights from the medical and social science literature, and suggests opportunities for continued research.

RECENT FINDINGS

Although sexual dysfunction has been historically evaluated as a consequence/outcome of obesity, it is increasingly considered as a harbinger of future metabolic comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Body image dissatisfaction is a consistent predictor for lower sexual satisfaction across BMI categories, likely mediated by cognitive distraction during partnered sex. To fully capture the relationship between obesity and sexual dysfunction, multidisciplinary research approaches are warranted. While clinically significant weight loss tends to improve sexual functioning for women and men, higher body image satisfaction may independently promote sexual function and satisfaction without concomitant weight loss.

The global prevalence of sexual dysfunction in obese and overweight women: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Obesity is a pressing public health risk issue worldwide. Women, in particular, face a higher risk of obesity. Recent research has highlighted the association between obesity and female sexual dysfunction. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the global prevalence of sexual dysfunction in obese and overweight women through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

METHODS

In this study, a systematic search was conducted across electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The search aimed to identify studies published between December 2000 and August 2022 that reported metabolic syndrome's impact on female sexual dysfunction.

RESULTS

The review included nine studies with a sample size of 1508 obese women. The I2 heterogeneity index indicated high heterogeneity (I2: 97.5). As a result, the random effects method was used to analyze the data. Based on this meta-analysis, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in women with obesity was reported as 49.7% (95%CI: 35.8-63.5). Furthermore, the review comprised five studies involving 1411 overweight women. The I2 heterogeneity test demonstrated high heterogeneity (I2: 96.6). Consequently, the random effects model was used to analyze the results. According to the meta-analysis, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in overweight women was 26.9% (95% CI: 13.5-46.5).

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of this study, it has been reported that being overweight and particularly obese is an important factor affecting women's sexual dysfunction. Therefore, health policymakers must acknowledge the significance of this issue in order to raise awareness in society about its detrimental effect on the female population.

Positive body perception and its link to sexual satisfaction in aging women - findings from the Women 40+ Healthy Aging Study

Research on the relation between physical appearance and sexual satisfaction in aging women is scarce. This study uniquely links attractiveness, body perception, and sexual satisfaction in 124 healthy aging women. Two-thirds reported being highly sexually satisfied. BMI and fat mass correlated significantly with sexual satisfaction. Weight and shape concerns moderated this relationship, affecting sexual satisfaction beyond the effect of body size and composition. Given the "unattractive stereotype" of older women related to the enduring social beauty ideal of a youthful and thin body, positive body perceptions in light of age-associated bodily changes should be promoted.

The impact of obesity on fertility and sexual function in women of child bearing age

Obesity and infertility are health problems that are increasing in frequency. In this study, sexual dysfunction in obese infertile women was investigated. A total of 450 women who met the inclusion criteria were recruited for the study; 150 women who had obesity without infertility, 150 women who had obesity with infertility and 150 women with normal weight but without infertility, which was the control group. The mean age of the groups were 31.3 ± 3.9, 31.2 ± 3.8 and 31.1 ± 4.5, respectively. The participants were administered a sociodemographic data form, the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Beck Depression Inventory following the measurement of body mass index (BMI). FSFI score below 26.55 was defined as sexual dysfunction. Our data were analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 21.0 for Windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). FSFI scores were observed to be statistically significantly lower in the group of obese women with infertility than in the other two groups. In our study, sexual dysfunction was found to be statistically significantly higher in obese women with infertility compared to the control group. Therefore, healthcare professionals should evaluate infertility in obese women in terms of sexual dysfunction as well as infertility treatment.Impact StatementWhat is already known on this subject? Psychological problems such as depression and anxiety, changes in sex hormones, and adipokines were reported to have negative impacts on sexual functions (Plaisance et al. 2009; Kendler et al. 2010; Yaylali et al. 2010). There are also various reports stating that female infertility has negative effects on sexual satisfaction and that fertility anxiety may affect sexual functions as an independent factor (Pakpour et al. 2012; Kaya et al. 2021). Even so there is a limited amount of information concerning the effects of obesity and infertility on female sexual function.What do the results of this study add? It has been found in our study that sexual dysfunction is higher in women with obesity and infertility and that this dysfunction is correlated with BMI.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? It is therefore important that healthcare professionals adopt a holistic approach that incorporates sexual health consultancy to improve the treatment and quality of life of women with obesity and infertility.

Living Your Best Life: Lifestyle Medicine for All Women

In an era of ever-increasing healthcare expenditures, yet simultaneously worsening outcomes, many of our patients choose between traditional medical care or often unproven alternative therapies. While the recognition of lifestyle change in addressing cardiovascular and metabolic disease grows, there is less understanding of the impact of lifestyle change on issues facing women every day. Millions of women around the globe struggle with infertility, cancer, sexual dysfunction, and dermatologic needs. Yet, research on the benefits of lifestyle change on these conditions is scarce, and gaps exist both in our understanding of evidence-based approaches to address these issues, as well as adequate provider education when evidence exists. The Women’s Health Member Interest Group convened medical experts in these areas that affect women’s lives to provide insights and meaningful education applicable not only for our patients, but also in our own lives.

Does prevalence of sexual dysfunction differ among the most common causes of infertility? A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Sexuality as a fundamental component of women's health, can be affected by infertility. The current study aimed at comparing the prevalence of sexual dysfunction among women with the most common causes of infertility.

METHODS

The current cross-sectional study was conducted on 240 infertile females with infertility due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS, n = 80), endometriosis (n = 80) and male factor (n = 80) at Royan Institute for Reproductive Biomedicine (Tehran, Iran) and 160 fertile women at health care centers, between May 2016 and June 2017. Sexual function was assessed by Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 25.00) and differences were regarded statistically significant at p < 0. 05.

RESULTS

The prevalence of female sexual dysfunction was 98.8% in women with PCOS, 100.0% in those with endometriosis, and 80.0% in those with male factor infertility. Overall, 36.2% of the enrolled fertile women were suffering from sexual dysfunction.

CONCLUSIONS

There was an association between the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction or individual domain scores of the FSFI, and infertility etiologies. Therefore, infertility care providers are required to take this into consideration and develop preventive strategies in this regard. Infertility as a major health care problem affects an estimated 8-12% of couples of reproductive age globally and sexuality as an important part of women's health, can be affected by infertility. In this study, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction among women with the most common causes of infertility has been evaluated. Impact of a high visceral adiposity index on female sexual dysfunction in sexually active women? Results of a cross-sectional study

AIMS

To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the impact of high visceral adiposity index (VAI) on female sexual dysfunction (FSD). We aimed to show the impact of increased levels of VAI on FSD compared with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) particularly in those with metabolic syndrome (MeTS).

METHODS

We included 158 participants in two groups: Group 1 (n = 68 with normal sexual function) and Group 2 (n = 90 with sexual dysfunction). Demographic, clinic data, presence of MeTS and comorbidities were recorded. The BMI, WC and the VAI were calculated. Sexual function was assessed using the female sexual function index.

RESULTS

The mean age and all the anthropometric variables were similar between the groups (P > .05). MeTS was associated with lower arousal and lubrication scores than those without MeTS (P = .023). The higher VAI was associated with lower desire, lubrication and orgasm scores (P < .05). Each integer increase of the VAI weakly predicted decrease of desire (P = .015), arousal (P = .015), lubrication (P = .005) and satisfaction (P = .046). The WC and BMI were not a good predictor for FSD in women (OR=1.019, P = .318).

CONCLUSION

The VAI was linked with lower scores in some female sexual function subdomains, but the correlation coefficient was low, indicating a weak association. Further studies with a higher number of participants are needed to conclude that the VAI may increase the risk of FSD, particularly in patients with MeTS.

What is the "weight" of body mass index on sexual functioning in women? A mediation model

PURPOSE

It is well known that body mass index (BMI) affects how individuals perceive their well-being and that obese individuals tend to report poorer levels of subjective health status. The aim of this study was to compare subjects with and without FSD and to examine the direct and indirect impact of BMI on female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in overweight/obese and normal-weight women.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted on 186 overweight/obese and 233 normal-weight women. FSD assessed with the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was investigated in relation to body satisfaction assessed with the Body Uneasiness Test (BUT-A) and self-esteem assessed with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale (RSE).

RESULTS

No difference in the prevalence of FSD was found between overweight/obese (44.4%) and normal-weight women (55.6%), even though significant between-group differences in body image were found. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) showed that BMI contribute to FSD only through the mediating role of body dissatisfaction and self-esteem.

CONCLUSIONS

The present results support the notion that sexual functioning is not related directly to BMI in women but to a more complex interactions of body weight, satisfaction with one's own body image, and levels of self-esteem. Clinicians should take into account that for women having a good sexual life seems not related to body weight but to the way their body weight is perceived within the context of self-image.

Depression and obesity, but not mild obstructive sleep apnea, are associated factors for female sexual dysfunction

PURPOSE

Mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is more prevalent than moderate and severe OSA and is more frequent in men than women. The association between OSA and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is still poorly explored in published studies. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of FSD in women with mild OSA and assess the impact of OSA on FSD, as well as to determine the predictors for FSD risk.

METHODS

The sample comprised 70 women aged 26-65 years: a control group (N = 28) with no sleep complaints, and a group with mild OSA (an apnea-hypopnea index of  5 or more and less than 15 events/hour, N = 42), who had been diagnosed using polysomnography performed in the sleep laboratory of a sleep research institute. All participants volunteered to take part in the study and completed the female sexual function index (FSFI), the Beck depression index (BDI), the Kupperman menopausal index (KMI), and the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS). Their socioeconomic group was assessed using the Brazilian Economic Classification Criterion. Polysomnography and serum levels of free testosterone and total testosterone were analyzed.

RESULTS

We found low FSFI scores (< 26.55) in the mild OSA (18.1) and control (21.7) groups (p = 0.97). There was no statistically significant difference between the mild OSA group and the control group. However, a higher BMI (p = 0.04), a higher BDI (p = 0.02), and being sexuality inactive (p = 0.001) were risk factors for FSD.

CONCLUSION

There was a high prevalence of FSD in the entire sample. The presence of mild OSA did not affect sexual function in this sample. Depressive symptoms and a high BMI were associated risk factors for FSD. Being sexually active may protect female sexual function.

Dietary Approaches to Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health

Over the course of the reproductive life span, it is common for women to experience one or more of the most common gynecologic conditions, including sexual dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome, fibroids, endometriosis, and infertility. Although current management guidelines often turn to the established pharmaceutical approaches for each of these diagnoses, the scientific literature also supports an evidence-based approach rooted in the paradigm of food as medicine. Achieving healthy dietary patterns is a core goal of lifestyle medicine, and a plant-forward approach akin to the Mediterranean diet holds great promise for improving many chronic gynecologic diseases. Furthermore, creating an optimal preconception environment from a nutritional standpoint may facilitate epigenetic signaling, thus improving the health of future generations. This state-of-the-art review explores the literature connecting diet with sexual and reproductive health in premenopausal women.

Body perception and sexuality of bariatric surgery patients

PURPOSE

This study aims to determine how body perception and sexual life are affected in obese individuals who are hospitalized to undergo bariatric surgery.

DESIGN AND METHODS

Descriptive research design and the cross-sectional method were used. The study was conducted with 53 individuals who consented to participate. The data were analyzed with the SPSS software package.

FINDINGS

Low body perception and sexual dysfunction were detected, particularly in women.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

In obesity treatment, the psychological and social problems that individuals experience due to obesity should be handled and evaluated with a multidisciplinary approach.

Does sexual functioning improve with migraine improvements and/or weight loss?-A post hoc analysis in the Women's Health and Migraine (WHAM) trial

BACKGROUND

Despite plausibility of migraine headaches contributing to impaired sexual function among women, data are inconsistent and point to obesity as a potential confounder. Prospective studies that assess the relative importance of migraine improvements and weight loss in relation to sexual function could help elucidate associations among migraine, obesity and female sexual dysfunction (FSD).

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate sexual function changes and predictors of improvement after behavioural weight loss (BWL) intervention for migraine or migraine education (ME).

METHODS

Women with migraine and overweight/obesity were randomized to 16 weeks of BWL (n = 54) or ME (n = 56). Participants completed a 4-week smartphone headache diary and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) at pre- and post-treatment. A validated FSFI total cut-off score defined FSD. We compared changes in FSFI scores and FSD rates between conditions and evaluated migraine improvements and weight loss as predictors of sexual functioning in the full sample.

RESULTS

Among treatment completers (n = 85), 56 (65.9%) participants who reported sexual activity at pre- and post-treatment were analysed. Migraine improvements were similar between conditions, whereas BWL had greater weight losses compared with ME. FSD rates did not change overall (48.2% to 44.6%, p = .66) or by condition (BWL: 56.0% to 40.0% vs. ME: 41.9% to 48.4%, p = .17). Similar patterns were observed for changes in FSFI total and subscale scores. Across conditions, larger weight losses predicted greater improvements in FSFI total and arousal subscale scores, whereas larger migraine headache frequency reductions predicted greater improvements in FSFI satisfaction subscale scores.

CONCLUSION

Sexual functioning did not improve with either BWL or ME despite migraine headache improvements in both conditions and weight loss after BWL. However, weight loss related to improvements in physiological components of the sexual response (i.e., arousal) and overall sexual functioning, whereas reduced headache frequency related to improved sexual satisfaction. Additional research with larger samples is needed.

Treatment Outcomes of Vaginal Infections on Sexual Function

Vaginal infections are the most common gynecological diseases and one of the causes of sexual dysfunction. In more than 50% of patients, sexual dysfunction is twice as common. Evaluation of the treatment outcome of vaginal infections can be effective in identifying factors related to the sexual function. This is a descriptive-observational study that included patients referred to Imam Sajjad Shahriar Hospital during 2017-2018. Patients that met the inclusion criteria (with vaginal infections of Candida, Gardnerella and mixed infections - Candida and Gardnerella - Mixed group) completed the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire before and one month after treatment. Data were analyzed by SPSS 16, paired t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression. P-value <0.05 was considered significant. After the treatment of vaginitis, there was a significant increase in all aspects of the FSFI questionnaire. The mean and standard deviation of sexual function of women before and after treatment were 18.26 ± 4.36 and 26.27 ± 4.97 in the Candida group, 20.06 ± 4.94 and 25.87 ± 5.32 in the Gardnerella group, and 19.69 ± 4.25 and 27.05 ± 5.12 in the Mixed group. Prior to treatment in the Mixed and Gardnerella group, the most important sexual dysfunction was related to the dyspareunia component, while in the Candida group, the most important sexual dysfunction was related to the desire component. After treatment, the components of dyspareunia in the Mixed and Gardnerella group and the orgasmic component in the Candida group showed the greatest improvement. The regression test showed that the effect of age, body mass index and duration of sex on sexual function was significant (P <0.05). Duration of the disease had the greatest impact on sexual dysfunction, and after treatment of the disease, sexual function improved significantly. Proper diagnosis and treatment are effective in improving women’s sexual function. The results of this study can be promoted to midwives and gynecologists.

Do external female genital measurements affect genital perception and sexual function and orgasm?

Objective:

To provide baseline data for the anatomy of the external female genitalia and to investigate the correlation between those measurements and sexual function and genital perception.

Materials and Methods:

This prospective cohort study consisted of 208 healthy premenopausal women. The Female Sexual Function index (FSFI) and the Female Genital Self-image scale (FGSIS) questionnaires were administered. Participants were divided into two groups according to their female sexual dysfunction (FSD) status. External genital measurements and anterior and posterior vaginal length were measured.

Results:

The external female genital measurements were (cm, mean ± standard deviation): clitoral prepuce length 2.05±0.48; clitoral glans length 0.87±0.21; clitoral glans width 0.60±0.15; clitoris to urethra 2.24±0.55; anterior fornix depth 7.75±0.92; posterior fornix depth 9.25±0.75; labia minora width, right 2.12±0.86, left 2.20±0.96. A weak negative correlation was found between total FGSIS scores and clitoral prepuce length (p=0.01, r=-0.17), whereas a weak positive correlation was seen between total FGSIS scores and anterior-posterior vaginal lengths (p=0.04, r=0.13; p=0.02, r=0.15, respectively). No statistically significant difference was found between the genital measurements of participants with FSD (n=82, 39.4%) and those without FSD (n=126, 60.6%), and the total FSFI scores and orgasm subdomain scores.

Conclusion:

The female genital measurements were found to be distributed over a wide range. Although the relationship between genital measurements and genital perception varied, no significant relationship was found between genital measurements and sexual functions or orgasm. These findings suggest that a more cautious approach should be taken towards genital surgeries for cosmetic purposes.

Association Between Body Mass Index and Female Sexual Dysfunction: A Cross-sectional Study from the Data Registry on Experiences of Aging, Menopause, and Sexuality

BACKGROUND

Obesity and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are prevalent conditions, and both are associated with significant adverse effects on health and well-being.

AIM

To investigate the association between body mass index and FSD, as well as potential moderators.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was performed by analyzing medical records of 6,688 women seeking consultation for menopause-related or sexual health-related concerns at women's health clinics at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN, and Scottsdale, AZ, between May 1, 2015, and September 15, 2019.

OUTCOMES

Female sexual function was assessed by the Female Sexual Function Index, and sexual distress was assessed by the Female Sexual Distress Scale-Revised.

RESULTS

Being overweight or obese was associated with a lack of sexual activity. Among sexually active women, those who were overweight or obese had lower Female Sexual Function Index total scores and sexual function domain scores (indicating worse sexual function), including sexual arousal, lubrication, satisfaction, orgasm, and pain, and higher levels of sexual distress than those with normal weight. However, on multivariable analysis, these associations were found to be mediated by other factors, including age, level of education, reproductive stage, medication use, and mood disturbances, which are known to impact body weight and sexual function in women.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

Overweight and obesity were associated with sexual inactivity and greater odds of having FSD, which should prompt proactive assessment of sexual function.

STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS

The strengths of this study include the large cohort size and assessment of sexual problems in addition to sexual distress, a key component of the definition of sexual dysfunction. This study also took into account multiple potential moderating factors. Limitations include the cross-sectional design, which precludes determination of causality as well as lack of diversity in the cohort, potentially limiting generalizability of results. In addition, sexual function was not assessed in women reporting no recent sexual activity, which may confound results.

CONCLUSION

Overweight/obesity and FSD are highly prevalent conditions, which appear to be indirectly associated. These results highlight the need to identify and address FSD in all overweight and obese women, with particular attention to potential contributing factors. Faubion SS, Fairbanks F, Kuhle CL, et al. The effect of bariatric surgery on female sexual function: a cross-sectional study

The generally negative impact of obesity on female sexuality is well-established. The possible association between bariatric surgery, weight loss, and female sexuality is much less described. The aim of the study was to analyse the possible association between bariatric surgery and female sexual function. It was a cross-sectional study of 623 patients who underwent bariatric surgery between 1999 and 2017. Patients were recruited on the basis of medical records from the Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw. Patients were invited to complete a questionnaire which consisted of self-designed demographic questions and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The total FSFI score, as well as each subdomain, improved significantly after surgery. The prevalence of low score (< 26.55) was significantly lower after the surgery in comparison to the status prior to the procedure (36.3% vs. 57.5%; p < .001). There were no differences regarding the number of sexually active patients before and after the surgery (75.3% vs. 76.1%; p < .63). There were observed statistically significant, positive correlations between BMI decrease and each subdomain of the FSFI score as well as the total score. Weight loss surgery seems to decrease the risk of sexual dysfunction presence and the advantages are associated with the total BMI loss.

Risk Factors for Sexual Pain Among Physically Active Women

INTRODUCTION

Sexual pain is common among women but little is known about associations with exercise and physical activity.

AIM

To determine the prevalence of sexual pain among physically active women and to evaluate cycling and other potential risk factors.

METHODS

This is a secondary data analysis of a study on the urinary and sexual wellness of physically active women recruited through sporting clubs and targeted social media advertising. We used multivariable logistic regression to assess the role of cycling and exercise in reporting any, frequent, or severe sexual pain, controlling for demographic, relationship, and health risk factors.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE

Sexual pain, including frequency and severity, was measured using the Female Sexual Function Index.

RESULTS

A total of 2,039 women were included, with 1,097 (54%) reporting any level of sexual pain, 364 (18%) experiencing frequent pain, and 378 (19%) reporting severe pain. Less than 5% of women reported diabetes or hypertension, and the cohort had a median body mass index of 23.3 (interquartile range 21.4-25.7). Increasing age and body mass index were protective against any sexual pain, as was cycling (odds ratio [OR] 0.73 [95% CI 0.59-0.90]). Participants who reported being "moderately satisfied" (OR 0.53 [95% CI 0.31-0.91]) or "very satisfied" (OR 0.33 [95% CI 0.19-0.56]) with their emotional closeness to a sexual partner had decreased odds of any sexual pain.

CONCLUSION

Experiencing any sexual pain is common in physically active women, with a prevalence of over 50%; however, weekly energy expenditure from exercise was not associated with sexual pain. Cycling participation and higher levels of emotional closeness and intimacy were associated with less pain. Association between type 1 diabetes and female sexual dysfunction

BACKGROUND

This study aims to evaluate: 1) the prevalence of Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) in women affected by type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and the control group; 2) the correlation between duration of DM, HbA1C levels and sexual life quality; 3) the relationship between different methods of insulin administration and sexual life quality; 4) the correlation between FSD and diabetes complications.

METHODS

We selected 33 women with type 1 DM and 39 healthy women as controls. Each participant underwent a detailed medical history and physical examination and completed the 6-item Female Sexual Function Index questionnaire (FSFI-6). In patients affected by type 1 DM, the different methods of insulin administration (Multi Drug Injection - MDI or Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion - CSII) and the presence of DM complications were also investigated.

RESULTS

The prevalence of FSD (total score ≤ 19) was significantly higher in the type 1 DM group than in the control group (12/33, 36.4% and 2/39, 5.2%, respectively; p = 0.010). No statistically significant differences were found regarding FSD according to the presence of complications, method of insulin administration or previous pregnancies.

CONCLUSIONS

This study underlined that FSD is higher in women affected by type 1 DM than in healthy controls. This could be due to the diabetic neuropathy/angiopathy and the type of insulin administration. Therefore, it is important to investigate FSD in diabetic women, as well as erectile dysfunction in diabetic men.

Sexual disorders and dyspnoea among women with obstructive sleep apnea

PURPOSE

We aimed to assess sexual function, sexual distress and the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) among women with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA), and to assess if the presence of OSA and dyspnea influences the prevalence of FSD, body image during sexual activity and sexual function.

METHODS

We assessed 23 women with new OSA diagnosis and 23 healthy age and body mass index (BMI) matched controls. Sexual functions were evaluated by Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (CSFQ), sexual dysfunction was diagnosed based on DSM-5 criteria during the semi-structured sexual interview, whereas body image was evaluated by Body Exposure during Sexual Activities Questionnaire (BESAQ). New York Heart Association score (NYHA) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were used to assess dyspnea.

RESULTS

OSA women had worse general sexual function and lower frequency of desire assessed by CSFQ (37.0 vs. 42 and 5 vs. 6), were at higher risk for FSD (CSFQ; 80% vs. 48%) and had a higher NYHA score (II vs. I). The prevalence of FSD did not differ in both groups, nor did sexual dysfunctions or body image (BESAQ). The multiple regression analysis revealed that OSA was associated with lower desire/frequency, higher NYHA scores with decreased desire/interest and worse body image during sexual activity, whereas higher VAS scores with worse desire/frequency.

CONCLUSIONS

OSA probably does not influence the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in females. However, OSA, as well as the higher level of dyspnea assessed by NYHA, may decrease sexual body image and sexual performance in females.

Lifestyles and sexuality in men and women: the gender perspective in sexual medicine

Sexual health is strictly related with general health in both genders. In presence of a sexual dysfunction, the expert in sexual medicine aims to discover the specific weight of the physical and psychological factors can cause or con-cause the sexual problem. At the same time, a sexual dysfunction can represent a marker of the future development of a Non-communicable diseases (NCDss) as cardiovascular or metabolic diseases.In the evaluation phase, the sexual health specialist must focus on these aspects, focusing especially on the risk and protective factors that could impact on both male and female sexuality.This article presents a review of researches concerning healthy and unhealthy lifestyles and their contribute in the development of sexual quality of life in a gender-dependent manner.Among the unhealthy lifestyle, obesity contributes mostly to the development of sexual dysfunctions, due to its negative impact on cardiovascular and metabolic function. Tobacco smoking, alcohol - substance abuse and chronic stress lead to the development of sexual dysfunction in a med-long term.In order to guarantee a satisfying sexual quality of life, sexual health specialists have the responsibility to guide the patient through the adoption of healthy lifestyles, such as avoiding drugs, smoke and excessive alcohol, practicing a regular physical activity, following a balanced diet and use stress-management strategies, even before proposing both pharmaco- and/or psychotherapies.

Evaluation of Obesity Influence in the Sexual Function of Postmenopausal Women: A Cross-Sectional Study

OBJECTIVE

 The incidence of obesity, which is a chronic condition, has increased in recent years. The association between obesity and female sexual dysfunction remains unclear, particularly in postmenopausal women. In the present study, we evaluated whether obesity is a risk factor for sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women.

METHODS

 This is a cross-sectional study that analyzed data from interviews of postmenopausal women at the Climacteric Outpatient Clinic from 2015 to 2018. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 221 women aged between 40 and 65 years old were selected and invited to participate in the study. Obesity was diagnosed according to body mass index (BMI). The participants were grouped into the following BMI categories: group 1, 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 (normal); group 2, 25.0-29.9 kg/m2 (overweight); and group 3, ≥30.0 kg/m2 (obese). Sexual function was assessed using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire. Cutoff points of ≥23 and ≥26.5 were adopted to define a diagnosis of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, Text Revision by the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV-TR).

RESULTS

 The desire and arousal scores were statistically higher in the normal BMI group than in the obese group (p = 0.028 and p = 0.043, respectively). The satisfaction scores were statistically higher in the normal BMI group than in the overweight and obese groups (p < 0.05). The total FSFI score statistically differed among the BMI categories (p = 0.027).

CONCLUSION

 In the present study, obese and overweight postmenopausal women had higher total scores than women with normal BMI. Our results show that obese and overweight postmenopausal women had a higher index of dysfunction in desire and arousal and lower sexual satisfaction than normal-weight women.

The relationship between body mass index, body image, and sexual function: A survey on Iranian pregnant women

Background

The prevalence of sexual problems is high during pregnancy. Despite this, there are limited data about the impact of physical and psychological factors such as body weight and body image on sexual function in pregnant women.

Objective

To investigate the relationship between body mass index, body image, and sexual function among pregnant women.

Materials and Methods

In this cross-sectional study, a total of 206 Iranian pregnant women (106 with normal weight and 100 overweight women) in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy were surveyed. Survey instruments included the Female Sexual Function Index and Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire.

Results

The prevalence of female sexual disorder was 72.3% in this survey. Diminished sexual desire/appetite was the most common problem reported by the participants (37.9%). The mean score of sexual problem and body image were not significantly different among overweight and normal weight women in the 2nd (p = 0.945 and p = 0.800, respectively) and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy (p = 0.310 and p = 0.507, respectively). Further, there were no relationships between the body mass index plus body image and the total female sexual function score (p = 0.44 and p = 0.837, respectively). However, the relationship between the appearance evaluation with lubrication (p = 0.043) and subjective weight with two subscales of sexual satisfaction (p = 0.005) and orgasm (p = 0.019) were significant.

Conclusion

The findings from this study revealed that there were no relationships between body mass index plus body image score and the sexual function in pregnancy. Therefore, a further research is recommended to study other potential factors affecting sexual function during pregnancy.

Body image and its relationships with sexual functioning, anxiety, and depression in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

BACKGROUND

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with lower levels of satisfaction with body image, which can affect sexuality and social well-being. Thus, we evaluated body image in women with PCOS and its association with body dis(satisfaction), anthropometric indices, sexual function, anxiety, and depression.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, 94 women of reproductive age were grouped by body mass index (BMI) and sexual function. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), Figure Rating Scale (FRS), hospital anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D) measurement scales, and anthropometric indices were used for data collection.

RESULTS

Women with PCOS presented with perceptual distortions of self-image independent of sexual function and BMI. There were negative correlations between HADS-A and HADS-D scores and the FSFI total score, and HADS-D scores had positive correlations with weight, anthropometric indices, and BSQ total score. The degree of dis(satisfaction) was a predictor of FSFI total score, depression, and anxiety, and the FSFI total score was predicted by HADS-D. Desired and ideal-gender BMIs were risk factors for sexual dysfunction, and overweight and obesity were risk factors for the degree of dis(satisfaction).

LIMITATIONS

This study had the limitations of using a cross-sectional design and it investigated a restricted number of clinical/biochemical parameters, as well as lacked objective measures of acne and hirsutism, and a control group.

CONCLUSIONS

Perception and cognitive-affective dimensions appear to play important roles in body image dysfunction in women with PCOS, and impact sexual dysfunction and depression associated the syndrome. Furthermore, these results provide additional treatment considerations for women with PCOS.

Sexual Dysfunctions in Obese Women Before and After Bariatric Surgery

Background

Obesity and associated comorbidities increase the probability of sexual disorders. The present study evaluated sexual satisfaction levels in obese women prior to and following bariatric surgery, utilizing the validated Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) to also evaluate the sexual satisfaction in obese and non-obese women.

Material/Methods

60 obese women (mean initial BMI of 43.7±5.9 kg/m²; mean age of 41.7±10.8 years) were administered the questionnaire on sexual function (FSFI) preceding bariatric surgery (laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, 22 women; gastric plication, 33 women; and biliopancreatic diversion, 5 women), 6 months and 12 months after the procedure, i.e., following substantial weight reduction (final mean BMI of 35.5±5.5 kg/m²). The control group comprised 60 non-obese women (mean BMI of 22.2±1.9kg/m²; mean age of 36.4±10.7 years).

Results

Our findings indicate that baseline sexual function in the preoperative obese females was significantly lower than in non-obese women, with p<0.01 in each domain. Data gathered at the 6- and 12-month points following the procedure indicated no significant difference. Before the procedure, 31 obese subjects (51.6%) exceeded the cutoff for FSD, at the 6-month evaluation point, 17 women (39.5%) exceeded the cutoff, and at 12 months postoperatively, 18 subjects (41.9%) exceeded the cutoff, indicative of FSD. Among the non-obese controls, only 9 subjects (15%) exceeded the cutoff threshold.

Conclusions

These findings show that substantive weight reduction resulting from bariatric surgery results in reduced sexual dysfunction in female subjects.

Changes in Sexual Function and Positions in Women With Severe Obesity After Bariatric Surgery

Introduction

Severe obesity is most effectively treated with bariatric surgery. The resulting weight loss is expected to improve a variety of obesity-related conditions, including sexual dysfunction.

Aim

To analyze changes in the sexual function of women with obesity following bariatric surgery.

Methods

A prospective study was conducted between April 2015 and April 2016 involving 62 women with obesity who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was used to evaluate sexual function. Sexual dysfunction was defined as an FSFI score below 26.55. Patients’ clinical and demographic data were recorded. Sexual frequency of 12 different sexual positions was also evaluated.

Main Outcome Measure

Sexual dysfunction prevalence and the frequency of sexual positions before and 6 months after surgery.

Results

The prevalence of sexual dysfunction decreased from 62% before surgery to 19% 6 months after the procedure. There was a 19.2% improvement in the mean overall FSFI score (P < .01). 6 months after surgery, the mean overall FSFI score had improved in all patients, with a statistically significant change being found in all 6 domains of the questionnaire (P < .05). There was an increase in the frequency of 3 of 12 sexual positions evaluated.

Conclusion

Sexual function in women with obesity effectively improves after bariatric surgery. Favorable changes following weight loss included a significant reduction in the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and an increase in the frequency of different sexual positions during intercourse.

From inflammation to sexual dysfunctions: a journey through diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome

Metabolic diseases are associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which has been indicated as a potential mediator of endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. Visceral adiposity is thought to be the starting condition of the inflammatory state through the release of inflammatory cytokines, including TNF-alpha, CRP, and IL-6, which in turn promote endothelial dysfunction, endothelial expression of chemokines (IL-1) and adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and P-selectin), and the inhibition of anti-atherogenic factors (adiponectin). Obesity, metabolic diseases, and diabetes, all conditions characterized by abdominal fat, are well-recognized risk factors for sexual dysfunction in both sexes. Evidence from randomized-controlled trials supports the association between inflammatory milieau and erectile dysfunction in men suffering from metabolic diseases, whereas, in women, this has to be confirmed in further studies. A healthy lifestyle based on dietary pattern with high content of whole grain, fruit, nuts and seeds, and vegetables and low in sodium and saturated fatty acids plus regular physical activity may help to modulate the pro-inflammatory state associated with metabolic diseases and the related burden of sexual dysfunctions.

An update on physical health and economic consequences of overweight and obesity

Overweight and obesity (OW and OB) have been on the increase globally and posed health risks to the world's population of all ages, including pre-born babies, children, adolescents, adults and elderly people, via their comorbid conditions. Excellent examples of comorbidities associated with obesity include cancer, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this article, we aimed to review and update scientific evidence regarding the relationships between obesity and its common physical health consequences, including CVD, T2DM, hypertension, ischemic stroke, cancer, dyslipidemia and reproductive disorders. In addition, the economic burden of OW and OB will be discussed. Abundant evidence is found to support the associations between obesity and other diseases. In general, the odd ratios, risk ratios or hazard ratios are often higher in OW and OB people than in the normal-weight ones. However, the molecular mechanism of how OW and OB induce the development of other diseases has not been fully understood. Figures also showed that obesity and its-related disorders exert enormous pressure on the economy which is projected to increase. This review highlights the fact that obesity can lead to numerous lethal health problems; therefore, it requires a lot of economic resources to fight against this epidemic.

Lubricant use during intercourse and time to pregnancy: a prospective cohort study

OBJECTIVE

To assess the extent to which lubricant use during intercourse is associated with time to pregnancy (TTP).

DESIGN

Prospective cohort study.

SETTING

Denmark and North America.

POPULATION

A total of 6467 women aged 18-49 years who were not using contraception or fertility treatment.

METHODS

We pooled data from two continuing prospective cohort studies of pregnancy planners in Denmark (2011-2017) and North America (2013-2017). Female participants completed bimonthly questionnaires for 12 months or until they reported pregnancy. After restricting the study to women without a history of infertility who had been trying to conceive for six or fewer cycles at enrollment, 6467 women were retained for analysis. Self-reported lubricant use was categorised as water-based/not pH balanced, water-based/pH balanced 'fertility friendly', silicone-based, oil-based, or a combination of these. We used proportional probability models to calculate fecundability ratios (FRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the association between lubricant use and fecundability, after adjusting for cohort and sociodemographic and lifestyle factors.

RESULTS

At baseline, 17.5% of participants reported the use of lubricants, most commonly water-based/not pH balanced (11.4%). Compared with non-use of lubricants, FRs were 1.02 (95% CI 0.93-1.11) for water-based/not pH-balanced lubricant use, 1.01 (95% CI 0.86-1.18) for water-based/pH balanced 'fertility friendly' lubricant use, 1.23 (95% CI 0.94-1.61) for oil-based lubricant use, and 1.27 (95% CI 0.93-1.73) for silicone-based lubricant use. Associations between oil-based lubricant use and fecundability were inconsistent across subgroups of study cohort, age, parity, and intercourse frequency.

CONCLUSIONS

Lubricant use was not associated with reduced fecundability in the preconception cohorts of pregnancy planners studied.

The effect of sleeve gastrectomy technique on women's sexual function: A prospective study

INTRODUCTION

Obesity may lead to a serious deterioration in general quality of daily life and sexual functionality. Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment method for obesity and related morbidities so far and it is better than some medical treatment modalities. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of bariatric surgery and especially sleeve gastrectomy, which has been currently performed in increasing numbers on female sexual functions and quality of life.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 53 patients were included to the current study. The participants were selected from eligible individuals who have undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy operation in our center between April 2014 and March 2015 dates. Age, body weights and body mass indexes (BMIs) of the patients were pre-operatively recorded. The patients have completed the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Beck Depression Scale and SF-36 (Short form-36) forms before and after the surgery. Additionally, post-operative decrease in body weights and mean BMI were recorded.

RESULTS

Following bariatric surgery, sexual functions of the female patients improved and total FSFI scores increased. When FSFI scores were analyzed, it was observed that sexual desire, sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm and sexual satisfaction increased, while the pain parameter has not changed.

CONCLUSION

Recent literature reveals that unfavorable effects of increasingly prevalent obesity on sexual functions cannot be denied. We think that sleeve gastrectomy can obtain considerable weight loss, improvement in self-esteem, decrease in anxiety, amelioration in sexual functions and general quality of life.

Association between comorbidities and female sexual dysfunction: findings from the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3)

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS

Although medical comorbidities are widely recognized to be associated with erectile dysfunction, less research has been done on their association with female sexual dysfunction (FSD). The purpose of this study was to assess whether FSD is associated with comorbidities; we hypothesized that there is an association.

METHODS

This is a secondary analysis of the third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal-3), a prospective stratified probability sample of individuals aged 16-74. We assessed for association between sexual function scores and heart attack, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, chronic lung disease, depression, other mental health condition, other neurologic conditions, and incontinence, as well as menopause and smoking status. Correlation between comorbidities and specific domains of sexual function was also assessed.

RESULTS

A total of 6777 women, with an average age of 35.4 (14.1), responded to the survey and reported sexual activity in the past year. There was an association between sexual function score and age, menopause, hysterectomy, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, depression, other mental health condition, stroke, other neurological condition, and homosexual attraction (p < 0.05). On multivariate analysis, age, sexual attraction, smoking status, depression, and other mental health conditions remained significantly correlated with sexual function (p < 0.05). Comorbidities were found to be correlated with specific domains.

CONCLUSIONS

Comorbidities were associated with FSD and specific comorbidities associated with dysfunction in specific domains. Urogynecologists and urologists must assess for comorbidities, as women presenting with sexual dysfunction may provide an opportunity for early diagnosis of life-threatening conditions.

Cardiometabolic Risk and Female Sexuality-Part I. Risk Factors and Potential Pathophysiological Underpinnings for Female Vasculogenic Sexual Dysfunction Syndromes

INTRODUCTION

Erectile dysfunction is recognized as an opportunity for preventing cardiovascular (CV) events, and assessing the impairment of penile vascular flow by Doppler ultrasound is an important tool to ascertain CV risk. Conversely, the role of genital vascular impairment in the pathophysiology of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) remains contentious.

AIM

To focus on the current scientific support for an association between CV risk factors and female sexual health in the 1st part of a 2-part review.

METHODS

A thorough literature search of peer-reviewed publications on the associations between CV risk factors and FSD and their underlying mechanisms was performed using the PubMed database.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

We present a summary of the evidence from clinical studies and discuss the possible mechanisms providing the pathophysiologic bases of vasculogenic FSD syndromes.

RESULTS

The peripheral sexual response in women is a vascular-dependent event, and evidence suggests that cardiometabolic-related perturbations in endothelial function can determine vascular insufficiency in female genital tissues. Although epidemiologic and observational studies demonstrate that the prevalence of FSD is higher in women with diabetes mellitus, a cause-effect relation between these clinical conditions cannot be assumed. Evidence on the effect of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome on sexual function in women is controversial. Data on the associations of dyslipidemia and hypertension with FSD are limited.

CONCLUSION

Common cardiometabolic alterations could affect vascular function in the female genital tract. The International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health Process of Care for Management of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder in Women

The International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health process of care (POC) for management of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) algorithm was developed to provide evidence-based guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of HSDD in women by health care professionals. Affecting 10% of adult females, HSDD is associated with negative emotional and psychological states and medical conditions including depression. The algorithm was developed using a modified Delphi method to reach consensus among the 17 international panelists representing multiple disciplines. The POC starts with the health care professional asking about sexual concerns, focusing on issues related to low sexual desire/interest. Diagnosis includes distinguishing between generalized acquired HSDD and other forms of low sexual interest. Biopsychosocial assessment of potentially modifiable factors facilitates initiation of treatment with education, modification of potentially modifiable factors, and, if needed, additional therapeutic intervention: sex therapy, central nervous system agents, and hormonal therapy, guided in part by menopausal status. Sex therapy includes behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and mindfulness. The only central nervous system agent currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for HSDD is flibanserin in premenopausal women; use of flibanserin in postmenopausal women with HSDD is supported by data but is not FDA approved. Hormonal therapy includes off-label use of testosterone in postmenopausal women with HSDD, which is supported by data but not FDA approved. The POC incorporates monitoring the progress of therapy. In conclusion, the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health POC for the management of women with HSDD provides a rational, evidence-based guideline for health care professionals to manage patients with appropriate assessments and individualized treatments.

Appearance Dissatisfaction, Body Appreciation, and Sexual Health in Women Across Adulthood

Risk and protective factors are equally important to the promotion of sexual health. Yet, in body image and sexuality research, most of the focus has been placed on the deleterious effects of appearance dissatisfaction and body mass index (BMI) at the expense of more adaptive dimensions. Furthermore, although age can affect appearance and sexual function, little is known regarding the experience of older women. Therefore, this study was aimed at comparing how positive body image (operationalized as body appreciation) and negative body image (operationalized as appearance dissatisfaction) each contribute to indicators of sexual health when controlling for BMI in a sample of age-varied women. Cross-sectional data were collected online from 215 heterosexual women aged 18-88 years. Results showed that body appreciation was a unique predictor of sexual function, satisfaction, and distress, above and beyond the effect of BMI and appearance dissatisfaction. Body appreciation was not found to fluctuate with age. Further, body appreciation moderated the relationship between age and sexual satisfaction, but not sexual distress. Post hoc analyses showed that high body appreciation may serve as a buffer against age-related changes in sexual satisfaction only in women with clinically significant sexual function difficulties. Increasing body appreciation may be a promising clinical intervention in the treatment of sexual problems in older adult women.
