Fracture behaviors under pure shear loading in bulk metallic glasses

Phase Transformations from Nanocrystalline to Amorphous (Zr70Ni25Al5)100-xWx (x; 0, 2, 10, 20, 35 at. %) and Subsequent Consolidation

Glasses, which date back to about 2500 BC, originated in Mesopotamia and were later brought to Egypt in approximately 1450 BC. In contrast to the long-range order materials (crystalline materials), the atoms and molecules of glasses, which are noncrystalline materials (short-range order) are not organized in a definite lattice pattern. Metallic glassy materials with amorphous structure, which are rather new members of the advanced materials family, were discovered in 1960. Due to their amorphous structure, metallic glassy alloys, particularly in the supercooled liquid region, behave differently when compared with crystalline alloys. They reveal unique and unusual mechanical, physical, and chemical characteristics that make them desirable materials for many advanced applications. Although metallic glasses can be produced using different techniques, many of these methods cannot be utilized to produce amorphous alloys when the system has high-melting temperature alloys (above 1500 °C) and/or is immiscible. As a result, such constraints may limit the ability to fabricate high-thermal stable metallic glassy families. The purpose of this research is to fabricate metallic glassy (Zr70Ni25Al5)100-xWx (x; 0, 2, 10, 20, and 35 at. %) by cold rolling the constituent powders and then mechanically alloying them in a high-energy ball mill. The as-prepared metallic glassy powders demonstrated high-thermal stability and glass forming ability, as evidenced by a broad supercooled liquid region and a high crystallization temperature. The glassy powders were then consolidated into full-dense bulk metallic glasses using a spark plasma sintering technique. This consolidation method did not result in the crystallization of the materials, as the consolidated buttons retained their short-range order fashion. Additionally, the current work demonstrated the capability of fabricating very large bulk metallic glassy buttons with diameters ranging from 20 to 50 mm. The results indicated that the microhardness of the synthesized metallic glassy alloys increased as the W concentration increased. As far as the authors are aware, this is the first time this metallic glassy system has been reported.

Determination of stress intensity factor of sharp V-notch under pure shear loading by the caustic method

The caustic method has proven to be a useful optical method to determine stress intensity factors. This paper evaluates the stress intensity factors of a sharp V-notch under pure shear loading by the caustic method for isotropic materials. The elastic stress fields and caustics formation near the V-notch tip under pure shear loading are first introduced. The theoretical relationship between the stress intensity factor of the sharp V-notch and the characteristic length is derived. Then, the experiment on the V-notched polymethyl methacrylate specimens under pure shear loading is carried out to obtain the stress intensity factor with the derived caustic formulation. Finally, the present results obtained from caustics are compared to the results available in the literature. The good accuracy of the results obtained demonstrates the ability of the caustics method in the determination of the stress intensity factor of a sharp V-notch.

Coordinate transformation methodology for simulating quasistatic elastoplastic solids

Molecular dynamics simulations frequently employ periodic boundary conditions where the positions of the periodic images are manipulated in order to apply deformation to the material sample. For example, Lees-Edwards conditions use moving periodic images to apply simple shear. Here, we examine the problem of precisely comparing this type of simulation to continuum solid mechanics. We employ a hypoelastoplastic mechanical model, and develop a projection method to enforce quasistatic equilibrium. We introduce a simulation framework that uses a fixed Cartesian computational grid on a reference domain, and which imposes deformation via a time-dependent coordinate transformation to the physical domain. As a test case for our method, we consider the evolution of shear bands in a bulk metallic glass using the shear transformation zone theory of amorphous plasticity. We examine the growth of shear bands in simple shear and pure shear conditions as a function of the initial preparation of the bulk metallic glass.

Temperature Effect on Fracture of a Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glass

Bulk metallic glass (BMGs) is highly expected for applications in engineering structures due to their superior mechanical properties. The fracture toughness of some BMGs was investigated at cryogenic and at elevated temperatures. However, the mechanism of the temperature-dependence of BMG toughness still remains elusive. Here, we characterized the fracture toughness of Zr₆₁Ti₂Cu₂₅Al₁₂ BMG prepared with Zr elemental pieces with low Hf content at temperatures ranging from 134 to 623 K. The relaxation spectrum of the BMG was characterized by a dynamic mechanical analysis using the same temperature range. We found that the BMG is tougher at onset temperatures of the relaxation processes than at peak temperatures. The temperature-dependent fracture toughness of the BMG is strongly dependent on its relaxation spectrum.

Generalized Mohr-Coulomb strain criterion for bulk metallic glasses under complex compressive loading

The Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) stress criterion is widely applied to describe the pressure sensitivity of bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). However, this criterion is incapable of predicting the variation in fracture angles under different loading modes. Moreover, the M-C criterion cannot describe the plastic fracture of BMGs under compressive loading because the nominal stress of most BMGs remains unchanged after the materials yield. Based on these limitations, we propose a new generalized M-C strain criterion and apply it to analyze the fracture behaviors of two typical Zr-based BMG round bar specimens under complex compressive loading. In this case, the predicted initial yielding stress is in good agreement with the experimental results. The theoretical results can also describe the critical shear strain and fracture angle of BMGs that are associated with the deformation mode.
