Direct trifluoromethylselenolations of electron-rich (hetero)aromatic rings with N-trifluoromethylselenolating saccharin

A novel, easily synthesizable, shelf-stable electrophilic trifluoromethylselenolating reagent, N-trifluoromethylselenosaccharin, has been developed. This reagent can be synthesized in good yield by a two-step one-pot reaction from BnSeCF3, SO2Cl2, and silver saccharin. N-Trifluoromethylselenosaccharin proves to be an efficient trifluoromethylselenolating reagent, enabling the direct trifluoromethylselenolation of various electron-rich aromatic and heteroaromatic rings under mild reaction conditions. It exhibits excellent chemoselectivity and excellent compatibility with various functional groups, making it suitable for late-stage trifluoromethylselenolation applications in complex natural product and drug synthesis.

gem-Difluorination of carbon-carbon triple bonds using Brønsted acid/Bu4NBF4 or electrogenerated acid

gem-Difluorination of carbon-carbon triple bonds was conducted using Brønsted acids, such as Tf2NH and TfOH, combined with Bu4NBF4 as the fluorine source. The electrochemical oxidation of a Bu4NBF4/CH2Cl2 solution containing alkyne substrates could also give the corresponding gem-difluorinated compounds (in-cell method). The ex-cell electrolysis method was also applicable for gem-difluorination of alkynes.

Visible-Light-Induced Domino Perfluoroalkylation/Cyclization to Access Perfluoroalkylated Quinazolinones by an EDA Complex

The electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes have been extensively studied, which formed an electronically excited state, obviating the need for an exogenous photocatalyst. Herein, we report a mild and efficient strategy for photoinduced radical domino perfluoroalkylation/cyclization using N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine (TMEDA) as an electron donor. This protocol could be well expanded to access various polycyclic quinazolinones containing perfluoroalkyl groups, exhibiting photocatalyst-free, good functional group tolerance, and environmentally friendly features.

Halo-perfluoroalkoxylation of gem-difluoroalkenes with short-lived alkali metal perfluoroalkoxides in triglyme

Alkali metal alkoxides play a pivotal role in nucleophilic alkoxylation reactions, offering pathways for the synthesis of ethers, including the increasingly sought-after trifluoromethyl ethers. However, the synthesis of long-chain perfluoroalkyl ethers remains a substantial challenge in this field. Through the innovative use of triglyme to encapsulate potassium ions, we enhanced the stability of short-lived, longer-chain perfluoroalkoxy anions, thereby facilitating efficient nucleophilic perfluoroalkoxylation reactions. This method provides a new precedent for the halo-perfluoroalkoxylation of gem-difluoroalkenes and offers a versatile tool for the design of perfluoroalkyl ethers, including those containing complex moieties of heterocycles and drug molecules. We also demonstrated the utility of the resulting halo-perfluoroalkoxyl adducts through various chemical transformations to valuable diverse perfluoroalkyl ethers.

Silver(i) Perfluoroalcoholates: Synthesis, Structure, and their Use as Transfer Reagents

Herein we report a general access to silver(i) perfluoroalcoholates, their structure in the solid state and in solution, and their use as transfer reagents. The silver(i) perfluoroalcoholates are prepared by the reaction of AgF with the corresponding perfluorinated carbonyl compounds in acetonitrile and are stable for a prolonged time at -18 °C. X-ray analysis of single crystals of perfluoroalcoholate species showed that two Ag(i) centers are bridged by the alcoholate ligands. In acetonitrile solution, Ag[OCF3] forms different structures as indicated by IR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the silver(i) perfluoroalcoholates can be used as easy-to-handle transfer reagents for the synthesis of Cu[OCF3], Cu[OC2F5], [PPh4][Au(CF3)3(OCF3)], and fluorinated alkyl ethers.

Visible light-promoted [3+2] cyclization reaction of vinyl azides with perfluoroalkyl-substituted-imidoyl sulfoxonium ylides

Visible-light-induced [3+2] cyclization of vinyl azides with perfluoroalkyl-substituted imidoyl sulfoxonium ylides has been developed for the first time. In this transformation, perfluoroalkyl-substituted imidoyl sulfoxonium ylides are firstly employed as a carbon radical precursor under visible light irradiation, providing a new and efficient method for the construction of perfluoroalkyl-substituted 1-pyrrolines.

Applications of Transition Metal-Catalyzed ortho-Fluorine-Directed C-H Functionalization of (Poly)fluoroarenes in Organic Synthesis

The synthesis of organic compounds efficiently via fewer steps but in higher yields is desirable as this reduces energy and reagent use, waste production, and thus environmental impact as well as cost. The reactivity of C-H bonds ortho to fluorine substituents in (poly)fluoroarenes with metal centers is enhanced relative to meta and para positions. Thus, direct C-H functionalization of (poly)fluoroarenes without prefunctionalization is becoming a significant area of research in organic chemistry. Novel and selective methodologies to functionalize (poly)fluorinated arenes by taking advantage of the reactivity of C-H bonds ortho to C-F bonds are continuously being developed. This review summarizes the reasons for the enhanced reactivity and the consequent developments in the synthesis of valuable (poly)fluoroarene-containing organic compounds.

Access to CF2COR-Containing Quinazolinones via Visible-Light-Induced Domino Difluoroalkylation/Cyclization of N-Cyanamide Alkenes

A green and highly efficient visible-light-induced radical cascade difluoroalkylation/cyclization reaction of N-cyanamide alkenes has been developed. A variety of CF2COR-containing quinazolinones have been obtained in high yields with cheap non-metallic 4CzIPN as the photocatalyst. This photocatalytic reaction provides rapid, facile, and practical access to valuable polycyclic quinazolinone, and it is amenable to the gram scale.

Metallomimetic C-F Activation Catalysis by Simple Phosphines

Delivering metallomimetic reactivity from simple p-block compounds is highly desirable in the search to replace expensive, scarce precious metals by cheap and abundant elements in catalysis. This contribution demonstrates that metallomimetic catalysis, involving facile redox cycling between the P(III) and P(V) oxidation states, is possible using only simple, cheap, and readily available trialkylphosphines without the need to enforce unusual geometries at phosphorus or use external oxidizing/reducing agents. Hydrodefluorination and aminodefluorination of a range of fluoroarenes was realized with good to very good yields under mild conditions. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies show that the phosphines undergo oxidative addition of the fluoroaromatic substrate via a Meisenheimer-like transition state to form a fluorophosphorane. This undergoes a pseudotransmetalation step with a silane, via initial fluoride transfer from P to Si, to give experimentally observed phosphonium ions. Hydride transfer from a hydridosilicate counterion then leads to a hydridophosphorane, which undergoes reductive elimination of the product to reform the phosphine catalyst. This behavior is analogous to many classical transition-metal-catalyzed reactions and so is a rare example of both functional and mechanistically metallomimetic behavior in catalysis by a main-group element system. Crucially, the reagents used are cheap, readily available commercially, and easy to handle, making these reactions a realistic prospect in a wide range of academic and industrial settings.

Liquid crystal monomers in soils near the e-waste recycling site and liquid crystal display manufacturer: Exponential decrease with distance

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) have been recognized as contaminants of emerging concerns. E-waste recycling sites and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) manufacturers are supposed to be critical sources. However, information regarding LCM contaminations in soils surrounding these sites are currently unavailable. In this study, soil samples were collected from two distinct areas in South China: e-waste recycling area (n = 36) and LCD manufacturer (n = 41), and 60 target LCMs (including 13 biphenyl and analogs (BAs), 10 cyanobiphenyl and analogs (CBAs), and 37 fluorinated biphenyl and analogs (FBAs)) were determined. The concentrations of LCMs in the soils from near the e-waste recycling area (0.32-18 ng/g, average: 4.2 ng/g) were higher than those surrounding the LCD manufacturer (ND - 7.2 ng/g, average: 1.5 ng/g). The compositional profiles of LCMs in soil samples from these two typical point sources were considerably different. The concentrations of FBAs exponentially decreased with distance from the e-waste recycling park, by >90 % within 2 km. The levels of BAs exhibited a similar exponential decrease with distance from the LCD manufacturer. The inventories of LCMs were estimated to be 21.0 kg in the e-waste recycling area and 10.8 kg in the LCD manufacturer area. Remarkably, the inventory of LCMs in soils from e-waste recycling area was one order of magnitude larger than that of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) in the same region, and 0.2 to 20 times the annual global emissions of LCMs from discarded LCD panels. More studies are required to elucidate the environmental occurrence, behavior, and fate of LCMs in multimedia environment surrounding typical point sources.

Mild Pd-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Cross-Coupling of Zinc(II) Polyfluorobenzoates with Aryl Bromides and Nonaflates: Access to Polyfluorinated Biaryls

We developed a Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling of zinc polyfluorobenzoates, which were used as precursors for producing zinc reagents in situ, with aryl bromides and nonaflates, providing a mild and efficient pathway for the synthesis of polyfluorinated biaryls. This protocol exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional tolerance. Moreover, the versatility of this approach was demonstrated by the straightforward late-stage modification of drugs, biologically active molecules, and pesticides, indicating its potential significance in drug discovery.

The perfluoroalkylthiolation/decarbonylation reaction of 1,3-diketones with perfluoroalkanesulfenic acids

The perfluoroalkylthiolation/decarbonylation reactions of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds with in situ formed perfluoroalkanesulfenic acids were achieved. Using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as an additive, a series of α-perfluoroalkylthiolated arylethanones were obtained in moderate to good yields. A possible mechanism was proposed based on the reaction results and control experiments.

Impact of carbon quantum dots on self-assembly and dielectric relaxation modes of a room temperature tri-component fluorinated antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixture

We investigated the impact of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) of sizes ∼2-5 nm in a room temperature tri-component fluorinated antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) mixture. The synthesised CQDs have been characterised by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. An increase in the transition temperature and enthalpy to the isotropic liquid phase indicates stabilization of the AFLC mixture in the presence of CQDs. The dielectric studies have been carried out in the frequency range of 1 Hz-40 MHz under the planar anchoring conditions of the molecules. An appreciable increase in the permittivity, dielectric strength, and conductivity has been observed owing to the existence of sp2/sp3 hybridization in the CQDs which form a strong coupling and develop a dipolar ordering in the systems. Various relaxation frequencies were increased with the incarceration of CQDs in the AFLC mixture. Overall, the different studies suggest that the doped CQDs are very well settled in between the host molecules without disturbing the molecular ordering of the hosts. Such results are encouraging and reveal the potential applicability of the CQD doped systems to produce highly efficient tuneable optical devices and other multifaceted applications.

Electrochemical Late-Stage Functionalization

Late-stage functionalization (LSF) constitutes a powerful strategy for the assembly or diversification of novel molecular entities with improved physicochemical or biological activities. LSF can thus greatly accelerate the development of medicinally relevant compounds, crop protecting agents, and functional materials. Electrochemical molecular synthesis has emerged as an environmentally friendly platform for the transformation of organic compounds. Over the past decade, electrochemical late-stage functionalization (eLSF) has gained major momentum, which is summarized herein up to February 2023.

Induction and Stabilization of Columnar Mesophases in Fluorinated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Arene-Perfluoroarene Interactions

The straightforward synthesis of several Fluorinated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by the efficient, transition-metal-free, arene fluorine nucleophilic substitution reaction is described, and the full investigation of their liquid crystalline and optical properties reported. The key precursors for this study, i. e. 2,2'-dilithio-4,4',5,5'-tetraalkoxy-1,1'-biphenyl derivatives, were obtained in two steps from the highly selective Scholl oxidative homo-coupling of 3,4-dialkoxy-1-bromobenzene, followed by quantitative double-lithiation. In situ room temperature nucleophilic annulation with either perfluorobenzene or perfluoronaphthalene leads to 1,2,3,4-tetrafluoro-6,7,10,11-tetraalkxoytriphenylenes and 9,10,11,12,13,14-hexafluoro-2,3,6,7-tetraalkoxybenzo[f]tetraphenes, respectively, in good yields. Exploiting the same strategy, subsequent double annulations resulted in the formation of 9,18-difluoro-2,3,6,7,11,12,15,16-octa(alkoxy)tribenzo[f,k,m]tetraphenes and 9,10,19,20-tetrafluoro-2,3,6,7,12,13,16,17-octakis(hexyloxy)tetrabenzo[a,c,j,l]tetracenes, respectively. Despite the presence of only four alkoxy chains, the polar "Janus" mesogens display a columnar hexagonal mesophase over broad temperature ranges, with higher mesophase stability than the archetypical 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexa(alkoxy)triphenylenes and their hydrogenated counterparts. The improvement or induction of mesomorphism is attributed to efficient antiparallel face-to-face π-stacking driven by the establishment of non-covalent perfluoroarene-arene intermolecular interactions. The larger lipophilic discotic π-extended compounds also exhibit columnar mesomorphism, over similar temperature ranges and stability than their hydrogenated homologs. Finally, these fluorinated molecules form stringy gels in various solvents, and show interesting solvatochromic emission properties in solution as well as strong emission in thin films and gels.

Diverse Synthetic Transformations Using 4-Bromo-3,3,4,4-tetrafluorobut-1-ene and Its Applications in the Preparation of CF2 CF2 -Containing Sugars, Liquid Crystals, and Light-Emitting Materials

Organic molecules with fluoroalkylene scaffolds, especially a tetrafluoroethylene (CF2 CF2 ) moiety, in their molecular structures exhibit unique biological activities, or can be applied to functional materials such as liquid crystals and light-emitting materials. Although several methods for the syntheses of CF2 CF2 -containing organic molecules have been reported to date, they have been limited to methods using explosives and fluorinating agents. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop simple and efficient approaches to synthesize CF2 CF2 -containing organic molecules from readily available fluorinated substrates using carbon-carbon bond formation reactions. This personal account summarizes the simple and efficient transformation of functional groups at both ends of 4-bromo-3,3,4,4-tetrafluorobut-1-ene and discusses its synthetic applications to biologically active fluorinated sugars and functional materials, such as liquid crystals and light-emitting molecules.

Development of Electrophilic Radical Perfluoroalkylation of Electron-Deficient Olefins

Fluorinated organic compounds have attracted significant attention over the past few decades owing to their unique properties and versatility. An established method for the synthesis of fluorinated organic compounds involves radical perfluoroalkylation reactions towards double bonds. In this radical pathway, electrophilic perfluoroalkyl radicals exhibit excellent reactivity towards electron-rich olefins. Therefore, several splendid perfluoroalkylation reactions of electron-rich olefins have been reported. However, there are only a few examples of reaction involving electron-deficient olefins because of their poor electronic compatibility with perfluoroalkyl radicals. This review focuses on the reports that challenge this long-standing issue. Radical perfluoroalkylation/bifunctionalization reactions of electron-deficient olefins are described according to the radical generation methods.

Novel Fluorinated Biphenyl Compounds Synthesized via Pd(0)-Catalyzed Reactions: Experimental and Computational Studies

Five new difluorinated biphenyl compounds, 4'-(tert-butyl)-3,4-difluoro-1,1'-biphenyl (TBDFBP), 1-(3',4'-difluoro-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)ethanone (DFBPE), 3',4'-difluoro-2,5-dimethoxy-1,1'-biphenyl (DFDMBP), 3,4-difluoro-3'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl (DFNBP), and (3',4'-difluoro-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-yl)(methyl)sulfane (DFBPMS), have been successfully synthesized by the well-known Suzuki-Miyaura coupling with excellent yields averaging 78%. UV-visible, Fourier transform infrared ,and 13C NMR and 1H NMR spectroscopies along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis (for TBDFBP and DFBPE) were used for the structure elucidation of the synthesized compounds. The SC-XRD results demonstrated the crystal systems of the studied compounds, TBDFBP and DFBPE, to be monoclinic, and their space groups were found to be P21/c. Also, a detailed density functional theory study was performed. The calculated structures for TBDFBP and DFBPE were found to agree quite well with the experimental results. The natural bonding orbital charge analysis suggested that molecules of these compounds should interact quite noticeably with each other in the solid phase and with polar solvent molecules. Molecular electrostatic potential analysis suggests that accumulation of positive and negative potential implies possibility of quite significant dipole-dipole intermolecular interactions in crystals of these compounds, as well as quite strong interactions with polar solvent molecules. The global reactivity parameters analysis suggests all compounds to be quite stable in redox reactions, with the compound DFNBP being relatively more reactive and the compounds TBDFBP and DFDMBP being relatively more stable.

Columnar Liquid Crystals of Copper(I) Complexes with Ionic Conductivity and Solid State Emission

Two neutral copper(I) halide complexes ([Cu(BTU)₂X], X = Cl, Br) were prepared by the reduction of the corresponding copper(II) halides (chloride or bromide) with a benzoylthiourea (BTU, N-(3,4-diheptyloxybenzoyl)-N'-(4-heptadecafluorooctylphenyl)thiourea) ligand in ethanol. The two copper(I) complexes show a very interesting combination of 2D supramolecular structures, liquid crystalline, emission, and 1D ionic conduction properties. Their chemical structure was ascribed based on ESI-MS, elemental analysis, IR, and NMR spectroscopies (¹H and ¹³C), while the mesomorphic behavior was analyzed through a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). These new copper(I) complexes have mesomorphic properties and exhibit a hexagonal columnar mesophase over a large temperature range, more than 100 K, as evidenced by DSC studies and POM observations. The thermogravimetric analysis (TG) indicated a very good thermal stability of these samples up to the isotropization temperatures and over the whole temperature range of the liquid crystalline phase existence. Both complexes displayed a solid-state emission with quantum yields up to 8% at ambient temperature. The electrical properties of the new metallomesogens were investigated by variable temperature dielectric spectroscopy over the entire temperature range of the liquid crystalline phase. It was found that the liquid crystal phases favoured anhydrous proton conduction provided by the hydrogen-bonding networks formed by the NH…X moieties (X = halide or oxygen) of the benzoylthiourea ligand in the copper(I) complexes. A proton conductivity of 2.97 × 10^-7 S·cm^-1 was achieved at 430 K for the chloro-complex and 1.37 × 10^-6 S·cm^-1 at 440K for the related bromo-complex.

Demethyl oxidative halogenation of diacyl dimethylsulfonium methylides

α-Halo-α-methylthio-β-ketosulfones containing a quaternary halocarbon stereocenter were prepared via selective demethyl oxidative halogenations of diacyl dimethylsulfonium methylides in moderate to excellent yields (39 examples; up to 98%). The current protocols directly and efficiently introduce a halogen atom into organic compounds with high functional group tolerance under metal-free conditions.

Fluorination Enables Dual Ferroelectricity in Both Solid- and Liquid-Crystal Phases

Ferroelectric materials are a special type of polar substances, including solids or liquid crystals. However, obtaining a material to be ferroelectric in both its solid crystal (SC) and liquid crystal (LC) phases is a great challenge. Moreover, although cholesteric LCs inherently possess the advantage of high fluidity, their ferroelectricity remains unknown. Here, through the reasonable H/F substitution on the fourth position of the phenyl group of the parent nonferroelectric dihydrocholesteryl benzoate, we designed ferroelectric dihydrocholesteryl 4-fluorobenzoate (4-F-BDC), which shows ferroelectricity in both SC and cholesteric LC phases. The fluorination induces a lower symmetric polar P1 space group and a new solid-to-solid phase transition in 4-F-BDC. Beneficial from fluorination, the SC and cholesteric LC phases of 4-F-BDC show clear ferroelectricity, as confirmed by well-shaped polarization-voltage hysteresis loops. The dual ferroelectricity in both SC and cholesteric LC phases of a single material was rarely found. This work offers a viable case for the exploration of the interplay between ferroelectric SC and LC phases and provides an efficient approach for designing ferroelectrics with dual ferroelectricity and cholesteric ferroelectric liquid crystals.

Fluorine-a small magic bullet atom in the drug development: perspective to FDA approved and COVID-19 recommended drugs

During the last twenty years, organic fluorination chemistry established itself as an important tool to get a biologically active compound. This belief can be supported by the fact that every year, we are getting fluorinated drugs in the market in extremely significant numbers. Last year, also ten fluorinated drugs have been approved by FDA and during the COVID-19 pandemic, fluorinated drugs played a very crucial role to control the disease and saved many lives. In this review, we surveyed all ten fluorinated drugs approved by FDA in 2021 and all fluorinated drugs which were directly-indirectly used during the COVID-19 period, and emphasis has been given particularly to their synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and development process. Out of ten approved drugs, one drug pylarify, a radioactive diagnostic agent for cancer was approved for use in positron emission tomography imaging. Also, very briefly outlined the significance of fluorinated drugs through their physical, and chemical properties and their effect on drug development.

Cascade Oxidative Trifluoromethylthiolation and Cyclization of 3-Alkyl-1-(2-(alkynyl)phenyl)indoles

Persulfate-promoted radical cascade trifluoromethylthiolation and cyclization of 3-alkyl-1-(2-(alkynyl)phenyl)indoles with AgSCF₃ were investigated. This protocol provides a novel route to CF₃S-substituted indolo[1,2-a]quinoline-7-carbaldehydes and CF₃S-substituted indolo[1,2-a]quinoline-7-methanone derivatives via the formation of the C-SCF₃ bond and C-C bond and benzylic carbon oxidation in a single step. This reaction can accommodate a broad range of functional groups. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction data confirm the chemical structure of the product. A scale-up experiment and radical inhibition experiments were operated in the reaction system. Photophysical properties of some selected 5-((trifluoromethyl)thio)indolo[1,2-a]quinoline-7-carbaldehydes were studied by UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Synthesis and characterization of new imine liquid crystals based on terminal perfluoroalkyl group

New organic derivatives named, (E)-3(or4) -(alkyloxy)-N-{(trifluoromethyl)benzylidene}aniline, 1a-f, were synthesized and examined their liquid crystalline behaviors. FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ¹⁹F NMR, elemental analyses and GCMS were used to validate the prepared compounds' chemical structures. We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) to investigate the mesomorphic characteristics of the formed Schiff bases. All tested compounds of series 1a-c have mesomorphic behaviour of nematogenic temperature ranges while the group 1d-f show non-mesomorphic properties. Moreover, it was found that the enantiotropic N phases included all of the homologue 1a-c. Computational studies using DFT (density functional theory) validated the experimental mesomorphic behavior results. All the analyzed compounds had their dipole moments, polarizability, and reactivity characteristics explained. Theoretical simulations showed that as the length of the terminal chain is increased, the polarizability of the stuided compounds increases. Consequently, compounds 1a and 1d have the least polarizability.

Generation of difluorocarbenes and introduction of fluorinated one carbon units into carbonyl and related compounds

Difluorocarbene is a simple and versatile one-carbon unit for synthesizing acyclic and cyclic organofluorine compounds. However, the use of difluorocarbene in organic synthesis has been relatively limited because of the harsh conditions required for its generation, the toxicity of the precursors, and undesired dimerization. This feature article provides an account of (i) the generation of free and metal difluorocarbenes from trimethylsilyl 2,2-difluoro-2-(fluorosulfonyl)acetate (TFDA) or BrCF₂CO₂Li/Na and (ii) their application to the facile synthesis of valuable organofluorine compounds. The difluorocarbenes thus generated react with (thio)carbonyl compounds and silyl dienol ethers to provide a wide variety of products such as (a) difluoromethyl (thio)ethers, (b) fluorinated thiophenes, (c) fluorinated thia/oxazoles, (d) fluorinated cyclopentanones and (e) difluoroalkenes.

Transition-Metal-Free Controllable Single and Double Difluoromethylene Formal Insertions into C-H Bonds of Aldehydes with TMSCF2 Br

We have developed a new strategy for controllable single and double difluoromethylene (CF₂ ) formal insertions into C-H bonds of aldehydes with nearly full selectivity under transition-metal-free conditions. The key to the success of controllable CF₂ insertions lies in the well-defined formation of 2,2-difluoroenolsilyl ether and 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorocyclopropanolsilyl ether intermediates using difluorocarbene reagent TMSCF₂ Br (TMS=trimethylsilyl). These two intermediates can react with various electrophiles including proton sources and various halogenation reagents, allowing for the access to diverse arrays of ketones containing difluoromethylene (CF₂ ) and tetrafluoroethylene (CF₂ CF₂ ) units. The first synthesis of relatively stable 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorocyclopropanolsilyl ethers has been achieved, which offers a new platform to explore other unknown chemical space.

Calixarene Functionalized Supramolecular Liquid Crystals and Their Diverse Applications

Liquid crystals are considered to be the fourth state of matter with an intermediate order and fluidity in comparison to solids and liquids. Calixarenes are among one of the most versatile families of building blocks for supramolecular chemistry due to their unique vaselike structure that can be chemically engineered to have different shapes and sizes. During the last few decades, calixarenes have drawn much attention in the field of supramolecular chemistry due to their diverse applications in the fields of ion and molecular recognition, ion-selective electrodes for catalysis, drug delivery, gelation, organic electronics and sensors, etc. Imbuing liquid crystallinity to the calixarene framework leads to functionalized calixarene derivatives with fluidity and order. Columnar self-assembly of such derivatives in particular enhance the charge migration along the column due to the 1D stacking due to the enhanced π-π overlap. Considering limited reports and reviews on this new class of calixarene based liquid crystals, a comprehensive account of the synthesis of calixarene liquid crystals along with their mesomorphic behavior and potential applications are presented in this review.

Mesomorphic, Computational Investigations and Dyeing Applications of Laterally Substituted Dyes

Two groups of laterally substituted non-mesomorphic and liquid crystalline materials bearing monoazo group were prepared and investigated via experimental and theoretical techniques. The molecular structures of the designed dyes were evaluated by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic analyses. Mesomorphic examinations for all synthesized dyes were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results revealed that, the thermal and optical properties of investigated compounds are mainly dependent on their molecular geometry. The optimized geometries of the azo derivatives and their electronic absorption of the dyes were carried out using the B3LYP/6-311G level of the DFT method. The azo dyes were measured for their dyeing performance on polyester fabrics. The dyed fabrics have excellent fastness properties with a color strength of 1.49-3.43 and an exhaustion rate of 82-64%. The chemical descriptor parameters of disperse azo dyes in gas phase were calculated and correlated with dyeing parameters.

Metal-free visible-light-induced hydroxy-perfluoroalkylation of conjugated olefins using enamine catalyst

We developed a simple and sustainable method for the hydroxy-perfluoroalkylation of electron-deficient conjugated olefins and styrenes. In this protcol, in situ generated enamine forms electron-donor-accepter (EDA) complexes with perfluoroalkyl iodide, and reaction proceed with visible-light irradiation. Tertiary amine also interacts with perfluoroalkyl iodide via halogen-bonding, promoting the perfluoroalkyl radical generation. This reaction does not require any transition-metal or photoredox catalyst, and gaseous oxygen is used as the green hydroxy source. Moreover, various commercially available substrates and perfluoroalkyl iodides were tolerated, affording the desired hydroxy-perfluoroalkylated products in good to moderate yields (>50 examples, up to 90%).

Spontaneous Polarization Characteristics in Polar Smectic Phases of Fluoro-Substituted Bent-Shaped Dimeric Molecules

Three kinds of bent-shaped dimeric molecules are synthesized by fluorine substitution of C16 molecules, and influences of the substitution on the polar smectic phases are examined. The fluorine-substituted C16 molecules form the SmAP_F and SmC_AP_A phases. The transition temperatures decrease by 20-30 °C without significantly changing the temperature span of the smectic phase, and the switching rates to the ferroelectric state become 5-10 μs, which are fairly shorter than 250 μs of C16. These behaviors are considered to be caused by the decrease in the intermolecular force and the decrease in the viscosity. The anchoring behavior also appears to be different. On the indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated cell, the fluorine-substituted molecules are homogeneously aligned with the bent (polar) axes perpendicular to the surface, while the bent axes of ordinary bent-shaped molecules lie parallel to the surface. This may be attributable to the repulsion between the fluorine and ITO electrodes. Further, the fluorine substitution can increase the dipole moment of the molecule. The largest dipole moment obtained is 7.94 D, and this leads to a huge reversal polarization of 2.42 μC cm^-2, which is much higher compared to those reported in the bent-shaped molecules.

Selective C-F Bond Etherification of Trifluoromethylalkenes with Phenols

Selective functionalization of a single sp³ C-F bond of the CF₃ group represents an appealing way to generate the pharmaceutically privileged difluoromethylene moiety. Herein, a novel protocol for the C-F bond etherification of trifluoromethylalkenes and phenols is reported. A variety of alkenyl difluoroaryloxy ethers are obtained with good chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance. DFT calculation results and control experiments suggest that metal ion Cs⁺ might be involved in this defluorooxylation. Furthermore, the desired product exhibits a good insecticidal activity.

Synthesis, Mesomorphism, Photophysics, and Device Properties of Liquid-Crystalline Pincer Complexes of Gold(III) Containing Semiperfluorinated Chains

Gold(III) complexes of C^∧N^∧C-coordinating 2,6-diphenylpyridine pincer ligands with arylacetylide co-ligands are known triplet emitters at room temperature. We have reported previously that by functionalizing both the pincer ligand and the phenylacetylene with alkoxy chains, liquid crystallinity may be induced, with the complexes showing columnar mesophases. We now report new derivatives in which the phenylacetylene incorporates one, two, or three 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluoroalkyl chains. In terms of intermolecular interactions, solution ¹H NMR experiments suggest that the semiperfluoroalkyl chains promote a parallel, head-to-head arrangement of neighboring molecules relative to one another, rather than the anti-parallel, head-to-tail orientation found for the all-hydrocarbon materials. In terms of the liquid crystal properties, the complexes show columnar phases, with the addition of the more rigid fluorocarbon chains leading to a stabilization of both the crystal and liquid crystal mesophases. Mesophase temperature ranges were also wider. Interestingly, the amphiphilic nature of these complexes is evident through the observation of a frustrated columnar nematic phase between a Col_r and a Col_h phase, an observation recently reported in detail for one compound (Liq. Cryst., 2022, doi: 10.1080/02678292.2021.1991017). While calculation shows that, despite the "electronic insulation" provided by the dimethylene spacer group in the semiperfluoroalkyl chains, a small hypsochromic shift in one component of the absorption band is anticipated, experimentally this effect is not observed in the overall absorption envelope. Complexes with substituents in the 3,3',4,4'-positions of the phenyl rings of the pincer ligand once more show higher-luminescence quantum yields than the analogues with substituents in the 4,4'-positions only, associated with the lower-energy-emissive state in the former. However, in contrast to the observations with all-hydrocarbon analogues, the luminescence quantum yield of the complexes with 3,3',4,4'-substitution on the pincer increases as the number of semiperfluoroalkyl chains on the phenylacetylide increases, from 20% (one chain) to 34% (three chains). External quantum efficiencies in fabricated OLED devices are, however, low, attributed to the poor dispersion in the host materials on account of the fluorinated chains.

The rhombic honeycomb - a new mode of self-assembly in liquid crystalline soft matter

Rod-like liquid crystalline (LC) polyphilic compounds with a linear oligo(phenyleneethynylene) core, sticky glycerol groups at each end and two long alkyl side chains (C₂₀-C₃₂) at opposite sides form rhombic honeycombs with inner angles around 60/120°, occurring between triangular and square tiling patterns.

Suspect Screening of Liquid Crystal Monomers (LCMs) in Sediment Using an Established Database Covering 1173 LCMs

Recent studies have suggested that liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are emerging contaminants in the environment, and knowledge of this class of substances is very rare. Here, we reviewed existing LCM-related documents, i.e., publications and patents, and established a database involving 1173 LCMs. These 1173 LCMs were further calculated for their physicochemical properties, i.e., persistence (P), bioaccumulation (B), long-range transport potential (LRTP), and Arctic contamination and bioaccumulation potential (ACBAP). We found that 476 out of them were P&B chemicals (99% of them were halogenated), and 320 of them could have ACBAP properties (67% of them were halogenated). This LCM database was further applied for suspect screening of LCMs in n = 33 sediment samples by use of gas chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF/MS). We tentatively identified 26 LCM formulas, which could have 43 chemical structures. Two out of these 43 suspect LCM candidates, 1-butoxy-2,3-difluoro-4-(4-propylcyclohexyl) benzene (3cH4OdFP) and 1-ethoxy-2,3-difluoro-4-(4-pentyl cyclohexyl) benzene (5cH2OdFP), were fully confirmed by a comparison of unique GC and MS characteristics with their authentic standards. Overall, our present study expanded the previous LCM database from 362 to 1173, and 1173 LCMs in this database were calculated for their physicochemical properties. Meanwhile, taking n = 33 sediment samples as an exercise, we successfully developed a suspect screening strategy tailored for LCMs, and this strategy could have promising potential to be extended to other environmental matrices.

Effect of Host Structure on Optical Freedericksz Transition in Dye-Doped Liquid Crystals

The optical Freedericksz transition (OFT) can reversibly control the molecular orientation of liquid crystals (LCs) only by light irradiation, leading to the development of all-optical devices, such as smart windows. In particular, oligothiophene-doped LCs show the highly sensitive OFT due to the interaction between dyes and an optical-electric field. However, the sensitivity is still low for the application to optical devices. It is necessary to understand the factors in LCs affecting the OFT behavior to reduce the sensitivity. In this study, we investigated the effect of the host LC structure on the OFT in oligothiophene-doped LCs. The threshold light intensity for the OFT in trifluorinated LCs was 42% lower than that in LCs without fluorine substituents. This result contributes to the material design for the low-threshold optical devices utilizing the OFT of dye-doped LCs.

Modular access to substituted cyclohexanes with kinetic stereocontrol

Substituted six-membered cyclic hydrocarbons are common constituents of biologically active compounds. Although methods for the synthesis of thermodynamically favored, disubstituted cyclohexanes are well established, a reliable and modular protocol for the synthesis of their stereoisomers is still elusive. Herein, we report a general strategy for the modular synthesis of disubstituted cyclohexanes with excellent kinetic stereocontrol from readily accessible substituted methylenecyclohexanes by the implementation of chain-walking catalysis. Mechanistically, the initial introduction of a sterically demanding boron ester group adjacent to the cyclohexane is key to guiding the stereochemical outcome. The synthetic potential of this methodology has been highlighted in late-stage modification of complex bioactive molecules and in comparison with current cross-coupling techniques.

Electrically Switchable Anisometric Carbon Quantum Dots Exhibiting Linearly Polarized Photoluminescence: Syntheses, Anisotropic Properties, and Facile Control of Uniaxial Orientation

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been extensively explored in diverse fields because of their exceptional features. The nanometric particles with photoluminescence (PL) benefit various optical and photonic applications. However, the majority of previous reports have mainly focused on either unpolarized or circular-polarized (CP) PL. Linearly polarized (LP) emission of CQDs is limited mainly because of their isometric shape and difficulties in macroscopic orientation control. Herein, we report syntheses of anisometric CQDs and facile control of the uniaxial orientation on a macroscopic scale, which results in linearly polarized photoluminescence (LP-PL). The anisometric CQDs are synthesized from rigid-rod-shaped precursors and evenly dispersed in the rod-like liquid crystal (LC) host. As-synthesized CQDs exhibit a PL quantum yield as high as 35% in chloroform. In addition to uniform alignment, facile directional switching of the elongated CQD is established by employing the electrical responsiveness of the CQD and host LC. Therefore, the dichroic photophysical properties of anisometric CQDs have been beneficially adopted for fabrications of polarization-sensitive and electrically switchable PL devices. Also, anisometric CQDs are embedded in polymer films with molecular orientational patterns and clearly recognized by LP-PL.

A Ten-Year Perspective on Twist-Bend Nematic Materials

The discovery of the twist-bend nematic phase (N_TB) is a milestone within the field of liquid crystals. The N_TB phase has a helical structure, with a repeat length of a few nanometres, and is therefore chiral, even when formed by achiral molecules. The discovery and rush to understand the rich physics of the N_TB phase has provided a fresh impetus to the design and characterisation of dimeric and oligomeric liquid crystalline materials. Now, ten years after the discovery of the N_TB phase, we review developments in this area, focusing on how molecular features relate to the incidence of this phase, noting the progression from simple symmetrical dimeric materials towards complex oligomers, non-covalently bonded supramolecular systems.
