Abstract
Fe2+ plays a crucial role in biological systems as an essential trace element in the body. Iron is absorbed by the body through food and Fe2+ is also an important component of living cells; therefore, quantitative testing of Fe2+ in food and in living cells is of great importance. This paper presents the development of a novel π-bridge EDOT-based N-oxide turn-on fluorescent probe, designated as FeE, for the detection of Fe2+. The probe has been shown to exhibit excellent sensitivity, a favorable linear relationship between fluorescence signal intensity and Fe2+ concentration, and an effective immunity to interference. The probe has low cytotoxicity and has been successfully used to detect Fe2+ in cells using laser confocal fluorescence microscopy. It is also possible to determine the presence of Fe2+ in animal blood, spinach, apple juice, red wine, mineral water and metal cans.

Abstract
Water-soluble polymers with the ability to complex metal ions through complexing ligands have attracted significant interest in diverse domains, such as optical or catalyst applications. In this paper, we successfully synthesized, through a one-pot process combining polymerization-induced self-assembly and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, aqueous dispersions of terpyridine-decorated poly[poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate]-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA) amphiphilic block copolymers. The in-situ formation of well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers and their self-assembly led to nanosphere latex with the hydrodynamic diameters increasing from 17 to 52 nm and the length of the copolymers increasing from 21,000 to 51,000 g·mol-1. These aqueous dispersed tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA nanospheres effectively complex metal ions, such as Cu2+, in a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1. Subsequently, these metal-complexed nanospheres were employed as soft template nanocarriers to control, on the nanometer scale, the dispersion of metal on a nanostructured support. This is exemplified by the synthesis of copper supported on cerium oxide hollow spheres (Cu-CeO2) using Cu2+-tpy-PPEGMA-b-PMMA as template nanocarriers and CeO2 nanoparticles. This novel assembly engineering strategy for the preparation of atomically dispersed metal on a nanostructured support was highlighted through the utilization of Cu-CeO2 hollow spheres as an electrocatalyst for the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) to NH3. These encouraging outcomes emphasize the potential of metal-metal oxide-nanostructured materials to treat contaminated water sources with nitrate while allowing the green production of ammonia.

Abstract
An Indane-1-one derivative 11-(1-benzyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-10,12-dihydrodiindeno[1,2-b:2',1'-e]-pyridine (BDP) has been synthesized by the reaction of Indan-1-one with 1-benzyl-1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde. FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13N-NMR and Mass spectroscopic techniques has been used to confirmed the structure of BDP. The observed photophysical changes in BDP across various solvents were associated. The impact of various interactions on photophysical parameters, including Stokes shift, dipole moment, oscillator strength, and fluorescence quantum yields, has been assessed in relation to solvent polarity. Moreover, BDP demonstrates potential as a selective fluorescent chemosensor for detecting Fe3+ ion within a range of cations in an aqueous DMSO environment. A thorough investigation into the recognition mechanism of BDP towards Fe3+ ion has been conducted using Benesi-Hildebrand and Stern-Volmer, measurements. BDP forms a 2:1 complex with the Fe3+ ion, exhibiting fluorescent quenching behaviour.

Abstract
A series of stimuli-responsive fluorescent hydrogels were successfully synthesized via micelle radical copolymerization of hydrophilic acrylamide (AM), hydrophobic chromophore terpyridine-based monomer (TPY), and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM). These hydrogels presented blue emissions (423-440 nm) under room temperature, which is caused by the π-π* transition of the conjugated structures. Once the ambient temperature was increased to 55 °C, the fluorescence color changed from blue (430 nm) to pink (575 nm) within 10 min, subsequently to yellow (535 nm), and eventually back to pink. The thermal-responsive properties are attributed to the transition of the TPY units from unimer to dimer aggregation via the intermolecular charge transfer complex at high temperatures. The hydrogels showed pH-responsive properties. The emission peak of the hydrogel exhibited a blue shift of ~54 nm from neuter conditions to acidic conditions, while a 6 nm red shift to an alkaline environment was observed. The hydrogels demonstrated an obvious change in fluorescence intensity and wavelength upon adding different metal ions, which is caused by the coordination between the terpyridine units incorporated on the backbones and the metal ions. As a consequence, the hydrogels presented a sharp quenching fluorescence interaction with Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, and Co2+, while it exhibited an enhanced fluorescence intensity interaction with Sn2+, Cd2+, and Zn2+. The microstructural, mechanical, and rheological properties of these luminescent hydrogels have been systematically investigated.

Abstract
Iron, a crucial biologically active ion essential for metabolic processes in living organisms, plays a vital role in biological functions, and imbalances in iron levels can lead to various diseases. In this study, we have developed two simple "turn-on" fluorescent probes, NOPy and NOCN, for the quick and selective detection of Fe2+ at nanomolar levels (LOD of 35 nM), accompanied by significant absorption and emission shifts, along with colorimetric demarcation. Both fluorophores exhibit an excellent "turn-on" emission response upon encountering Fe2+ in the cells. Flow cytometry and confocal fluorescence imaging studies demonstrate enhanced fluorescence signals in response to labile iron, efficiently detecting heme during erastin-induced ferroptosis. Interestingly, we also observed that the product formed after Fe2+ sensing localizes within the lipid droplets. These water-soluble and highly sensitive reactive probes, NOPy and NOCN, enable investigations of iron-dependent physiological and pathological conditions. The development of these probes represents an advancement in the field, offering a rapid and selective means for detecting Fe2+ with minimal cytotoxicity.

Abstract
The detection and discrimination of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions have been investigated using a simple probe (L), produced by the condensation of ethylenediamine and 3-ethoxysalicyaldehyde. Single crystal X-ray structures demonstrate that L interacts with Fe2+ and Fe3+. In aqueous-DMSO media, the L recognises AsO2- by fluorescence and colorimetry techniques. The AsO2- aided PET inhibition and H-bond assisted chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) boost fluorescence by 91-fold. The L can detect 0.354 ppb Fe2+, 0.22 ppb Fe3+ and 0.235 ppt AsO2-.

Abstract
We have synthesized novel sulfonamide-based nano-composite (SAN) for selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous samples. Morphological characterization of SAN was carried out with TGA, FT-IR, UV-Vis, ninhydrin assay, FE-SEM, pXRD, BET, EDX, and elemental analysis. The sensing nature, effect of pH, sensor concentration and response time analysis were accomplished with the help of emission spectral studies and SAN was assessed as "turn-on" emission detector for the biologically important Fe3+ ions. Here, the LOD and LOQ were computed to be 26.68 nM and 88.93 nM, respectively, and it was found to be much lower than the permissible limit of Fe3+ ions in drinking water. The accuracy of the sensor (SAN) was determined by testing the aqueous samples spiked with known concentrations of Fe3+ ions and results demonstrated 98.00-99.66% recovery, which made SAN a reliable, selective and sensitive chemosensor for the quantification of Fe3+ ions in fully aqueous media.

Abstract
A novel triphenylamine (TPA) based sensor TTU was rationally designed and synthesized that exhibited reversible mechanochromic and aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties. The AIEE active sensor was employed for fluorometric detection of Fe3+ in aqueous medium, with distinguished selectivity. The sensor showed a highly selective quenching response towards Fe3+ that is ascribed to complex formation with paramagnetic Fe3+. Subsequently, TTU-Fe3+ complex acted as a fluorescence sensor for the detection of deferasirox (DFX). The subsequent addition of DFX to TTU-Fe3+ complex led to the recovery of fluorescence emission intensity of sensor TTU that was attributed to the displacement of Fe3+ by DFX and release of sensor TTU. The proposed sensing mechanisms for Fe3+ and DFX was confirmed through 1H NMR titration experiment and DFT calculations. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), density of states (DOS), natural bond orbital (NBO), non-covalent interaction (NCI) and electron density difference (EDD) analysis were performed using DFT calculations to support the experimental results. Moreover, sensor TTU displayed colorimetric detection of Fe3+. Further, the sensor was employed for the detection of Fe3+ and DFX in real water samples. Finally, logic gate was fabricated by using sequential detection strategy.

Abstract
We have synthesized two ligand systems, N(SO2)(R1)dpa (L1) and N(SO2)(R2)dpa (L2), where R1 = biphenyl and R2 = azobenzene, which are sulfonamide derivatives of the NNN-donor chelating dipicolylamine. Both L1 and L2 can be used as sensors for detecting Fe3+ and are highly sensitive and selective over a wide range of common cations. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations confirmed that the key excitations of L2 and the [Fe(L2)(H2O)3]3+ model complex involve -R2-unit-based π and π* charge transfer. L2 demonstrates a relatively high photostability, a fluorescence turn-on mechanism, and a detection limit of 0.018 μM with 1.00 μM L2 concentration, whereas L1 has a detection limit of 0.67 μM. Thus, both ligands have the potential to be used as fluorosensors for the detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
The development of reliable and highly sensitive methods for heavy metal detection is a critical task for protecting the environment and human health. In this study, a qualitative colorimetric sensor that used mercaptosuccinic-acid-functionalized gold nanoparticles (MSA-AuNPs) to detect trace amounts of Fe(III) ions was developed. MSA-AuNPs were prepared using a one-step reaction, where mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) was used for both stabilization, which was provided by the presence of two carboxyl groups, and functionalization of the gold nanoparticle (AuNP) surface. The chelating properties of MSA in the presence of Fe(III) ions and the concentration-dependent aggregation of AuNPs showed the effectiveness of MSA-AuNPs as a sensing probe with the use of an absorbance ratio of A530/A650 as an analytical signal in the developed qualitative assay. Furthermore, the obvious Fe(III)-dependent change in the color of the MSA-AuNP solution from red to gray-blue made it possible to visually assess the metal content in a concentration above the detection limit with an assay time of less than 1 min. The detection limit that was achieved (23 ng/mL) using the proposed colorimetric sensor is more than 10 times lower than the maximum allowable concentration for drinking water defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The MSA-AuNPs were successfully applied for Fe(III) determination in tap, spring, and drinking water, with a recovery range from 89.6 to 126%. Thus, the practicality of the MSA-AuNP-based sensor and its potential for detecting Fe(III) in real water samples were confirmed by the rapidity of testing and its high sensitivity and selectivity in the presence of competing metal ions.

Abstract
Novel furan 6a-c, furo[2,3-d]pyrimidine 7a-f, 9, 10a-f, 12a,b, 14a-d and furo[3,2-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidine 8a-f derivatives were designed based on their structural similarity to a previously described oxazole VEGFR-2 back pocket binding fragment. The designed compounds were synthesized and screened for their in vitro VEGFR-2 inhibitory activity where they exhibited good to moderate nanomolar inhibition with improved ligand efficiencies. 8b and 10c (IC50 = 38.72 ± 1.7 and 41.40 ± 1.8 nM, respectively) were equipotent to sorafenib and 6a, 6c, 7f, 8a, 8c, 10b, 10f, 12b, 14c and 14d showed good activity (IC50 = 43.31-98.31 nM). The furotriazolopyrimidines 8a-c and furopyrimidine derivative 10c were further evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activity against human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) where 8b showed higher potency than sorafenib and resulted in cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase whereas 8c revealed good antiproliferative activity with cell cycle arrest at G1 phase. Moreover, 8a-c and 10c showed significant inhibitory effects on the invasion and migration of HUVECs. Molecular docking study was conducted to gain insight about the potential binding mode. The furo[3,2-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidine derivatives 8b and 8c represent interesting starting point for antiangiogenic compounds based on their activity and favorable drug likeness profiles.

Abstract
In this work, a novel fluorescent probe CBO was synthesized for detecting Fe2+ using the natural monoterpenketone camphor as the starting material. The probe CBO displayed turn-on fluorescence to Fe2+ accompanied by the solution change from colorless to green. As expected, there was an excellent linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity of probe CBO and the concentration of Fe2+ (0-20 μM), and the detection limit was as low as 1.56×10-8 M. In particular, CBO could selectively sense Fe2+ more than other analytes (Fe3+ included) through the N-oxide strategy, and quickly responded to Fe2+ (60 s) over a wide pH (4-14) range. Additionally, based on the rapid fluorescence response of CBO to Fe2+, a simple test strip-based detector was designed for boosting practical applicability. The probe CBO had been successfully applied to the fluorescence imaging of Fe2+ in onion cells and living zebrafish. The probe CBO was a powerful tool of detecting Fe2+ level in organisms, which was of significance to understand the role of Fe2+ in Fe2+-related physical processes and diseases.

Abstract
Due to the essential role of Fe3+ in physiological and pathological processes, the detection of Fe3+ has drawn increasing attention in the field of disease diagnosis and environmental protection. However, most existing methods require either cumbersome sample pretreatment or sophisticated and expensive test equipment. Recently, carbon quantum dots have found a wide range of applications such as nanoprobes for Fe3+ determination, albeit with limited sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, we report core-shell carbon quantum dots B1N2CQDs via a two-step hydrothermal approach using citric acid, boric acid and ethylenediamine as precursors. The obtained B1N2CQDs exhibit excellent water solubility and remarkable stability as well as a high fluorescence quantum yield of 15.4%. In addition, the fluorescence of B1N2CQDs is quenched exclusively by Fe3+ with minimal interference from other metal ions. A linear relationship with R2 = 0.998 was observed between the fluorescence quenching capacity and the Fe3+ concentration in the range of 2-160 μM, with the limit of detection calculated to be 80 nM. Finally, the as-prepared B1N2CQDs were successfully applied as a highly efficient fluorescent probe for Fe3+ detection in river water samples and intracellular Fe3+ imaging in biological systems.

Abstract
In this work, we report a novel protein-based nanoprobe (PNP) that can be employed for quantitative analysis of Cu2+ in pure water medium and real samples. Structurally, the proposed nanoprobe comprises a biofriendly protein (hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL)) and a Cu2+-specific chromogenic agent, where HEWL acts as a nanocarrier encapsulating a structurally tailored rhodamine B derivate. The resulting PNP exhibits a hydrodynamic diameter of ~ 106 nm and efficiently disperses in water, enabling the detection of Cu2+ in pure aqueous systems without the aid of any organic co-solvents. The high sensitivity and selectivity of PNP allow the colorimetric detection of Cu2+ in the presence of other metal interferents with a low detection limit of 160 nM. The satisfying recovery of trace level Cu2+ in environmental samples demonstrate the great potential of employing PNP for the determination of Cu2+ in actual applications. Most importantly, the simple co-grinding method employing proteins and chromogenic agents provides a novel strategy to generate sensing systems that are useful detection of pollutants in aqueous samples.

Abstract
Five kinds of Fe3+ fluorescent probes (RhB-Gly, RhB-Ala, RhB-Try, RhB-Cys, and RhB-His) were synthesized and characterized by NMR and mass spectrometry, based on the "OFF-ON" mechanism of Rhodamine B derivatives. The RhB-His based probe showed remarkable sensing performance toward the detection for Fe3+ and showed high selectivity for Fe3+ in the presence of other metal ions (such as Fe2+, Hg2+, Zn2+, Ba2+, Al3+, Co2+, Cd2+, K+, Na+, Mn2+, Pd2+, Pb2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Ag+), in PBS buffer solution (containing 2% of EtOH, pH 7.4, 1.0 mmol/L). The enhancement of the fluorescence was linearly proportional with the concentration Fe3+ (from 0 to 20 μmol/L), while the detection limit reached 0.88 μmol/L with a response time of 15 s. The RhB-His probe was successfully applied to investigate real samples and living cell imaging.

Abstract
Firstly, a novel pyrazole-pyrazoline fluorescent probe was developed and synthesized. The probe can be used to determine Fe3+ ions in a series of cations in tetrahydrofuran aqueous solution with high selectivity and high sensitivity. After the addition of iron ions, the fluorescence intensity is significantly reduced, Its structure was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HR-ESI-MS. UV absorption spectra and Fluorescence spectroscopy were used to study the selective recognition of probe M on metal ions. The probe M can selectivity and sensitivity to distinguish the target ion from other ions through different fluorescence phenomena. In addition, the binding modes of M with Fe3+ were proved to be 1:1 stoichiometry in the complexes by Job's plot, IR results. The combination of probe M and iron ions is 1:1, and the detection limit is 3.9 × 10-10 M. The binding mode and sensing mechanism of M with Fe3+ was verified by theoretical calculations using Gaussian 09 based on B3LYP/6-31G(d) basis.

Abstract
In this work, a multifunctional ratiometric fluorescence (FL) nanohybrid (CSCDs@DC) was synthesized from chitosan based carbon dots (CSCDs) and dansyl chloride (DC) at room temperature. The CSCDs@DC revealed strong FL intensity, great stability and excellent anti-photobleaching properties. Herein, CSCDs@DC was responsive to pH value in the range of 1.5-4.0 and exhibited color-switchable FL properties between acidic and alkaline environments. In addition, CSCDs@DC showed good selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe3+ ions. A good linear relationship for the Fe3+ ion detection was obtained in the range from 0 μM to 100 μM, with a detection limit of 1.23 μM. What's more, CSCDs@DC can be used as a fluorescent ink. It expressed superior optical properties after 3 months of storage or continuous exposure to UV light for 24 h. This study suggested that CSCDs@DC had potential in the detection of pH and metal ions, as well as showing promising application in the anti-counterfeiting field.

Abstract
Graphene quantum dot-covalently appended terpyridine, GQDs-tpy, was synthesized and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. GQDs-tpy was found to act as multifunctional chemosensors: a highly selective colorimetric chemosensor for Fe2+ as evidenced by an obvious color change from colorless to pink, and a typical fluorescence enhanced probe for Zn2+ over 13 metal cations even in practical water samples. Moreover, two-input XOR, INHIBIT and IMPICATION logic gates as well as four-input OR and NOR logic gates were constructed according to the characteristic responses of GQDs-tpy to a sequence of cations.

Abstract
Here, naphthalene diamine-based β-diketone derivative (compound LH) was successfully used as a dual signaling probe for divalent cations, Fe2+ and Cu2+ ions, in bimodal methods (colorimetric and fluorometric). It showed fluorescent enhancement for Fe2+ ion by photoinduced electron transfer mechanism and fluorescence quenching for Cu2+ ion by charge-transfer process. Binding stoichiometry for [LH-(Fe2+)2] and [LH-(Cu2+)2] was found to be 1:2 by Job's plot method and, the binding constants were calculated as 1.6638 × 1010 and 9.22929 × 108 M-1, respectively. Compound LH exhibited OR and XOR logic gate behavior with H+, Fe2+, and Cu2+ as inputs. Further, the compound LH and bovine serum albumin binding interaction showed quenching of fluorescence by Förster resonance energy-transfer mechanism.

Abstract
A rhodamine-based smart probe (RHES) has been developed for trace-level detection and discrimination of multiple cations, viz. Al3+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ in a ratiometric manner involving photo-induced electron transfer-chelation-enhanced fluorescence-fluorescence resonance energy transfer processes. The method being very fast and highly selective allows their bare eye visualization at a physiological pH. The optimized geometry and spectral properties of RHES and its cation adducts have been analyzed by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. RHES detects as low as 1.5 × 10-9 M Al3+, 1.2 × 10-9 M Zn2+, 6.7 × 10-9 M Cd2+, and 1.7 × 10-10 M Hg2+, whereas the respective association constants are 1.33 × 105 M-1, 2.11 × 104 M-1, 1.35 × 105 M-1, and 4.09 × 105 M-1. The other common ions do not interfere. The probe is useful for intracellular imaging of Zn2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ in squamous epithelial cells. RHES is useful for the determination of the ions in sea fish and real samples.

Abstract
The selective recognition of target ions in water is very important and the development of novel water-soluble chemosensor is still an intriguing challenge. Herein, a novel water-soluble fluorescent sensor based on aspartic acid (Asp) functionalized 1,8-naphthalimide derivative (Asp-NI) has been designed and synthesized. The sensor Asp-NI could dissolve in water and successively detect Fe3+ and H2PO4− in water solution with high selectivity and sensitivity. The detection limits are 4.97 × 10−7 mol/L for Fe3+ and 5.27 × 10−6 mol/L for H2PO4−. Other coexistent competitive metal ions (Hg2+, Ag+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, and Mg2+) showed no interference in the Fe3+ detection process. The sensor Asp-NI could act as a Fe3+ and H2PO4− controlled “On–Off–On” fluorescent switch. More interestingly, the Fe3+ induced fluorescence quenching process could be totally reversed by the addition of H2PO4−, this “On–Off–On” switching process could be repeated several times with little fluorescence loss. Notably, the actual usage of sensor Asp-NI was further demonstrated by test kits.

Abstract
Combination of pyridine, antipyrine and indole in a single molecule (L2) allows selective recognition of Fe3+ colorimetrically in CH3CN. The structure of L2 is confirmed from single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The probe displays two different visible bands at 541nm and 715nm in the presence of Fe3+, associated with two different colors, viz. green and pink-violet allowing determination of unknown Fe3+ concentration. Interestingly, removal of 2-picolyl group from indole N-center of L2 generates L3 that behaves similarly at low Fe3+ concentration (>0 to 1.1mM) but differently at higher Fe3+ concentration (>1.1mM), indicating involvement of pyridyl-N donor towards Fe3+, and hence different coordination environment around Fe3+ at higher concentration.
