A structure and reactivity analysis of monomeric Ni(II)-hydroxo complexes prepared from water

A Single Terminal [NiII-OH] Catalyst for Direct Julia-Type Olefination and α-Alkylation Involving Sulfones and Alcohols

A terminal [NiII-OH] complex 1, supported by triflamide-functionalized NHC ligands, showed divergent reactivity for the reaction of sulfone with alcohol, contingent on base concentration, temperature, and time. Julia-type olefination of alcohols with sulfones was achieved using one equiv. of base, whereas lowering base loading to 0.5 equiv. afforded α-alkylated sulfones. Besides excellent substrate scope and selectivity, biologically active stilbene derivatives DMU-212, pinosylvin, resveratrol, and piceatannol were synthesized in high yield under Julia-type olefination conditions. An extensive array of controlled experiments and DFT calculations provide valuable insight on the reaction pathway.

A mesoionic carbene stabilized nickel(II) hydroxide complex: a facile precursor for C-H activation chemistry

We report the synthesis of a new nickel(II) hydroxide complex 2 supported by a rigid, tridentate triazolylidene-carbazolid ligand. The complex can be accessed in high yields following a simple and stepwise extraction protocol using dichloromethane and aqueous ammonium chloride followed by aqeous sodium hydroxide solution. We found that complex 2 is highly basic, undergoing various deprotonation/desilylation reactions with E-H and C-H acidic and silylated compounds. In this context we synthesized a variety of novel, functionalized nickel(II) complexes with trimethylsilylolate (3), trityl sulfide (4), tosyl amide (5), azido (6), pyridine (7), acetylide (8, 9), fluoroarene (10 & 11) and enolate (12) ligands. We furthermore found that 2 reacts with malonic acid dimethyl ester in a knoevennagel-type condensation reaction, giving access to a new enolate ligand in complex 13, consisting of two malonic acid units. Furthermore, complex 2 reacts with acetonitrile to form the cyanido complex 14. The formation of complexes 13 and 14 is particularly interesting, as they underline the potential of complex 2 in both C-C bond formation and cleavage reactions.

Neutral, cationic and anionic organonickel and -palladium complexes supported by iminophosphine/phosphinoenaminato ligands

We report a series of organometallic nickel and palladium complexes containing iminophosphine ligands R2PCH2C(Ph) = N-Dipp (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl; R = iPr, La; R = Ph, Lb; and R = o-C6H4OMe, Lc), synthesized by ligand exchange or oxidative addition reactions, and we investigate the capacity of such ligands to undergo reversible deprotonation to the corresponding phosphinoenaminato species. In the attempted ligand exchange reaction of the nickel bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl precursor [Ni(CH2SiMe3)2Py2] with Lb, the iminophosphine acts as a weak acid rather than a neutral ligand, cleaving one of the Ni-C bonds, to afford the phosphinoenaminato complex [Ni(CH2SiMe3)(L'b)(Py)] (L'b = conjugate base of Lb). We disclose a general method for the syntheses of complexes [Ni(CH2SiMe3)(L)(Py)]+ (L = La, Lb or Lc), and demonstrate that iminophosphine deprotonation is a general feature and occurs reversibly in the coordination sphere of the metal. By studying proton exchange reactions of the cation [Ni(CH2SiMe3)(Lb)(Py)]+ with bases of different strength we show that the conjugate phosphinoenaminato ligand in [Ni(CH2SiMe3)(L'b)(Py)] is a base with strength comparable to DBU in THF. The acyl group in the functionalized aryl complex [Ni(p-C6H4COCH3)(Br)(La)] does not interfere in the iminophosphine deprotonation with NaH. The latter reaction affords the unusual anionic hydroxide species [Ni(p-C6H4COCH3)(OH)(L'a)]-Na+, which was isolated and fully characterized.

Monomeric nickel hydroxide stabilized by a sterically demanding phosphorus–nitrogen PN3P-pincer ligand: synthesis, reactivity and catalysis

Nickel Pincer Complexes with Frequent Aliphatic Alkoxo Ligands [(iPrPCP)Ni-OR] (R = Et, nBu, iPr, 2-hydroxyethyl). An Assessment of the Hydrolytic Stability of Nickel and Palladium Alkoxides

A series of nickel pincer complexes with terminal alkoxo ligands [(^iPrPCP)Ni-OR] (R = Et, nBu, iPr, CH₂CH₂OH; ^iPrPCP is the 2,6-bis(diisopropylphosphinomethyl)phenyl pincer ligand) was synthesized and fully characterized. Together with the previously reported methoxo analogues of Ni and Pd, these complexes constitute a unique series of isostructural late transition-metal alkoxides. Spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction data provide direct indications of the strong polarization of their covalent Ni-OR bonds. One of the most salient features of this class of compounds is their facile hydrolysis with traces of moisture, leading to equilibrium mixtures with the corresponding hydroxides [(^iPrPCP)M-OH] (M = Ni or Pd) and alcohols, ROH. To compare the hydrolytic stability of nickel and palladium alkoxides, we performed NMR titrations of both hydroxides with several alcohols and determined the corresponding equilibrium constants. In general, these constants are ca. 1 order of magnitude smaller for M = Ni than Pd, indicating that Ni alkoxide complexes are more readily hydrolyzed than their Pd counterparts. For alkoxide complexes containing heteroatom-free R groups, the tendency to hydrolyze decreases as the parent alcohol ROH becomes more acidic, that is, R = Me > Et > iPr. This intuitive trend is broken for 2-methoxyethanol, the most acidic alcohol investigated. The hydroxo/2-methoxyethanol exchange equilibrium constants are comparable to those of ethanol (M = Ni) or methanol (M = Pd), showing that the corresponding 2-methoxyethoxide complexes are more prone to hydrolysis than anticipated. These experimental observations were rationalized in the light of density functional theory calculations.

Terminal NiII-OH/-OH2 complexes in trigonal bipyramidal geometries derived from H2O

The preparation and characterization of two NiII complexes are described, a terminal NiII-OH complex with the tripodal ligand tris[(N)-tertbutylureaylato)-N-ethyl)]aminato ([H3buea]3-) and a terminal Ni II-OH2 complex with the tripodal ligand N,N',N″-[2,2',2″-nitrilotris(ethane-2,1-diyl)]tris(2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonamido) ([MST]3-). For both complexes, the source of the -OH and -OH2 ligand is water. The salts K2[NiIIH3buea(OH)] and NMe4[NiIIMST(OH2)] were characterized using perpendicular-mode X-band electronic paramagnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, UV-visible spectroscopies, and its electrochemical properties were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry. The solid state structures of these complexes determined by X-ray diffraction methods reveal that they adopt a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry, an unusual structure for 5-coordinate NiII complexes. Moreover, the NiII-OH and NiII-OH2 units form intramolecular hydrogen bonding networks with the [H3buea]3- and [MST]3- ligands. The oxidation chemistry of these complexes was explored by treating the high-spin NiII compounds with one-electron oxidants. Species were formed with S = 1/2 spin ground states that are consistent with formation of monomeric NiIII species. While the formation of NiIII-OH complexes cannot be ruled out, the lack of observable O-H vibrations from the putative Ni-OH units suggest the possibility that other high valent Ni species are formed.

Spectroscopically Characterized Synthetic Mononuclear Nickel-Oxygen Species

Iron, copper, and manganese are the predominant metals found in oxygenases that perform efficient and selective hydrocarbon oxidations and for this reason, a large number of the corresponding metal-oxygen species has been described. However, in recent years nickel has been found in the active site of enzymes involved in oxidation processes, in which nickel-dioxygen species are proposed to play a key role. Owing to this biological relevance and to the existence of different catalytic protocols that involve the use of nickel catalysts in oxidation reactions, there is a growing interest in the detection and characterization of nickel-oxygen species relevant to these processes. In this Minireview the spectroscopically/structurally characterized synthetic superoxo, peroxo, and oxonickel species that have been reported to date are described. From these studies it becomes clear that nickel is a very promising metal in the field of oxidation chemistry with still unexplored possibilities.

Selective hydration of nitriles to amides catalysed by PCP pincer supported nickel(ii) complexes

Nickel(ii) hydroxo compounds supported by an electron rich PCP pincer ligand are active catalysts for the selective hydration of a variety of nitriles at low catalyst loadings and mild conditions.
