Abstract
During last decades, significant advances have been made in iron-based spin crossover (SCO) complexes, with a particular emphasis on achieving reversible and reproducible thermal hysteresis at room temperature (RT). This pursuit represents a pivotal goal within the field of molecular magnetism, aiming to create molecular devices capable of operating in ambient conditions. Here, we summarize the recent progress of iron complexes with spin transition near RT based on nitrogen ligands containing aromatic rings from molecular design to functional devices. Specifically, we discuss the various factors, including supramolecular interactions, crystal packing, guest molecules and pressure effects, that could influence its cooperativity and the spin transition temperature. Furthermore, the most recent advances in their implementation as mechanical actuators, switching/memories, sensors, and other devices, have been introduced as well. Finally, we give a perspective on current challenges and future directions in SCO community.

Abstract
Multifunctional magnetic materials have broad application prospects in molecular switches and information storage. In this study, four mononuclear Fe(II) complexes are synthesized using a series of pyrenylhydrazone ligands HL1-4. Two deprotonated ligands are coordinated to the iron(II) ions in an enolic form, leading to neutral complexes FeII(Lx)2·xsol with a FeIIN4O2 octahedral coordination environment. Magnetic measurements suggest that complex Fe(L1)2·2ACE (1·2ACE, ACE = acetone) is mainly low spin below 300 K and complex Fe(L3)2·ACE (3·ACE) is high spin, whereas complexes Fe(L2)2 (2) and Fe(L4)2·6H2O (4·6H2O) exhibit gradual spin crossover behavior. The spin states of complexes 1-4 are confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The substituent effect on the magnetic properties of the complexes is significant in this system. Temperature-dependent fluorescence emission spectra show the coexistence but no coupling effect of spin crossover and fluorescence for complexes 2 and 4·6H2O.

Abstract
Construction of spin-crossover (SCO) materials is very appealing for applications such as molecular switches and information storage. This study focuses on the design of Fe(II) complexes using N,N'-bis(2-pyridinylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine-based ligands with an N4 structure for SCO material development. By incorporating para-substituted benzene groups into the ligand's pyridine moiety, two polymorphs, α and β, were obtained, both exhibiting SCO activity. Notably, the β polymorph displayed a spin crossover temperature of 270 K, which is approaching room temperature. Structural analyses were conducted to compare the differences between the polymorphs, along with a literature review of related complexes, providing insights into the characteristics of SCO behavior.

Abstract
Spin crossover (SCO) is one of the most studied magnetic bistable phenomena because of its application in the field of multifunctional magnetic materials. FeII complexes in a N6 coordination environment have been the most well-studied in terms of their SCO behaviour. Other coordination environments, notably the N4O2 coordination environment, has also been quite effective in inducing SCO behaviour in the corresponding FeII complexes. This review deals with such systems. The three ligand families that are discussed are: Jager type ligands, hydrazone based ligands and tridentate ligands having salicylaldehyde derivatives. These ligands allow the assembly of both mononuclear and multinuclear complexes that exhibit cooperative spin transitions. Also, FeII complexes obtained from some of these ligands are multifunctional and exhibit a coupling of optical and magnetic properties. Most of the FeII complexes obtained from these families of ligands are charge neutral which allows easy surface deposition. Further, modulation of these ligand families allows a fine tuning of the ligand field strength which results in varying SCO behavior. In addition some of the FeII complexes derived from these ligands exhibit a light induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) effect. All of the above aspects are reviewed in this review.

Abstract
A concerted bending–flattening motion of the redox-active TTF within constructed one-dimensional FeII–TTF–Schiff-base chain with bridging 4,4′-bpy enhances the dielectric constant coupled to its spin-crossover transition above room temperature.
In designing multifunctional materials for potential switches that can be used as memory devices, the high-spin (HS) to low-spin (LS) crossover (SCO) one-dimensional polymer, [FeII(L)(4,4′-bpy)]n, was constructed from a designed redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) functionalized Schiff-base and the ditopic linker 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy). It exhibits an 8 K hysteretic SCO centred at T1/2 = 325 K which is coupled to changes in its dielectric constant. The crystal structures above and below the transition temperature reveal similar parallel linear ···Fe–bpy–Fe–bpy··· chains displaying expansion of the FeII octahedron in the HS state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a concerted electronic charge and spin change represented by the Mülliken charge of the Fe and the magnitude and direction of the dipole moment which substantiate the experimental observations.

Abstract
The unit cell of the title compound, [Zn(C17H18N3O4)2]·CH4O·C2H6O, contains two complex mol-ecules related by an inversion centre, plus one methanol and one ethanol solvent molecule per complex molecule. In each complex, two deprotonated pyridine aroylhydrazone ligands {3,4,5-trimeth-oxy-N'-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl-idene]benzohydrazide} coordinate to the ZnII ion through the N atoms of the pyridine group and the ketamine, and, additionally, through the O atom of the enolate group. In the crystal, dimers are formed by π-π inter-actions between the planar ligand moieties, which are further connected by C⋯O and C⋯C inter-actions. The inter-molecular inter-actions were investigated using Hirshfeld surface analysis and two-dimensional fingerprint plots, revealing that the most important contributions for the crystal packing are from H⋯H (44.8%), H⋯C/C⋯H (22.2%), H⋯O/O⋯H (18.7%) and C⋯C (3.9%) inter-actions.

Abstract
Bi-stable charge-neutral iron(ii) spin-crossover (SCO) complexes are a class of switchable molecular materials proposed for molecule-based switching and memory applications. In this study, we report on the SCO behavior of a series of iron(ii) complexes composed of rationally designed 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (ptp) ligands. The powder forms of [Fe2+(R-ptp-)2]0 complexes tethered with less-bulky substituents-R = H (1), R = CH2OH (2), and R = COOCH3 (3; previously reported)-at the 4-position of the pyridine ring of the ptp skeleton showed abrupt and hysteretic SCO at or above room temperature (RT), whereas complex 5 featuring a bulky pyrene substituent showed incomplete and gradual SCO behavior. The role of intermolecular interactions, lattice solvent, and electronic nature of the chemical substituents (R) in tuning the SCO of the complexes is elucidated.

Abstract
An important technique to realize novel electron- and/or proton-based functionalities is to use a proton-electron coupling mechanism. When either a proton or electron is excited, the other one is modulated, producing synergistic functions. However, although compounds with proton-coupled electron transfer have been synthesized, crystalline molecular compounds that exhibit proton-transfer-coupled spin-transition (PCST) behavior have not been reported. Here, we report the first example of a PCST Fe(II) complex, wherein the proton lies on the N of hydrazone and pyridine moieties in the ligand at high-spin and low-spin Fe(II), respectively. When the Fe(II) complex is irradiated with light, intramolecular proton transfer occurs from pyridine to hydrazone in conjunction with the photoinduced spin transition via the PCST mechanism. Because the light-induced excited high-spin state is trapped at low temperatures in the Fe(II) complex-a phenomenon known as the light-induced excited-spin-state trapping effect-the light-induced proton-transfer state, wherein the proton lies on the N of hydrazone, is also trapped as a metastable state. The proton transfer was accomplished within 50 ps at 190 K. The bistable nature of the proton position, where the position can be switched by light irradiation, is useful for modulating proton-based functionalities in molecular devices.

Abstract
An Fe(II) SCO complex based on an acylhydrazone ligand with an amino functional group has been prepared. The complex is able to dissociate and regather upon protonation and deprotonation, in both solid state and solution, accompanied by spin state switching, marked change of color, and distinct solubility in water. Moreover, the complex shows distinct magnetic responses toward formaldehyde and protic and nonprotic solvents, as a result of the different affinity of the amino functional site with those chemicals.

Abstract
Two isostructural NiII compounds, bis-{N-[1-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)eth-ylidene]pyridine-4-carbohydrazonato-κ2N',O}nickel(II)-2,5-di-chloro-terephthalic acid (1/1), [Ni(C13H11N4O)2](C8H4Cl2O4), and bis-{N-[1-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)eth-ylidene]pyridine-4-carbohydrazonato-κ2N',O}nickel(II)-2,5-di-bromo-terephthalic acid (1/1), [Ni(C13H11N4O)2](C8H4Br2O4), were synthesized and their crystal structures determined. The pair of N,N',O-tridentate N-[1-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)eth-yl]pyridine-4-carbohydrazonate L ligands result in a cis-NiO2N4 octa-hedral coordination sphere for the metal ions. The asymmetric units consist of two half-mol-ecules of the di-carb-oxy-lic acids, which are completed by crystallographic inversion symmetry. In the respective crystals, the 2,5-di-chloro-terephthalic acid (H2Cl2TPA, 1-Cl) mol-ecules form zigzag hydrogen-bonded chains with the [Ni(L)2] mol-ecules, with the hydrogen-bond distances in 1-Br slightly longer than those in 1-Cl. The packing is consolidated by aromatic π-π stacking between the di-carb-oxy-lic acid mol-ecules and terminal pyridine rings in [Ni(L)2] and short halogen-halogen inter-actions are also observed. The qualitative prediction of the H-atom position from the C-N-C angles of the terminal pyridine rings in L and the C-O distances in the carboxyl groups show that 1-Cl and 1-Br are co-crystals rather than salts.

According to magnetic susceptibility, differential scanning calorimetry fitted to Sorai's domain model, and powder X-ray diffraction measurements, 1 is low-spin at room temperature, and it exhibits spin crossover (SCO) at an exceptionally high transition temperature of T1/2 =418 K. Although the SCO of compound 1 spans a temperature range of more than 150 K, it is characterized by a wide (21 K) and dissymmetric hysteresis cycle, which suggests cooperativity. The crystal structure of the LS phase of compound 1 shows strong NH⋅⋅⋅S intermolecular H-bonding interactions that explain, at least in part, the cooperative SCO behavior observed for complex 1. DFT and CASPT2 calculations under vacuum demonstrate that the bbpya ligand generates a stronger ligand field around the iron(II) core than its analogue bapbpy (N,N'-di(pyrid-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-diamine); this stabilizes the LS state and destabilizes the HS state in 1 compared with [Fe(bapbpy)(NCS)2 ] (2). Periodic DFT calculations suggest that crystal-packing effects are significant for compound 2, in which they destabilize the HS state by about 1500 cm(-1) . The much lower transition temperature found for the SCO of 2 compared to 1 appears to be due to the combined effects of the different ligand field strengths and crystal packing.

Abstract
Several potentially tridentate pyridyl and phenolic Schiff bases (apRen and HhapRen, respectively) were derived from the condensation reactions of 2-acetylpyridine (ap) and 2'-hydroxyacetophenone (Hhap), respectively, with N-R-ethylenediamine (RNHCH(2)CH(2)NH(2), Ren; R = H, Me or Et) and complexed in situ with iron(II) or iron(III), as dictated by the nature of the ligand donor set, to generate the six-coordinate iron compounds [Fe(II)(apRen)(2)]X(2) (R = H, Me; X(-) = ClO(4)(-), BPh(4)(-), PF(6)(-)) and [Fe(III)(hapRen)(2)]X (R = Me, Et; X(-) = ClO(4)(-), BPh(4)(-)). Single-crystal X-ray analyses of [Fe(II)(apRen)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (R = H, Me) revealed a pseudo-octahedral geometry about the ferrous ion with the Fe(II)-N bond distances (1.896-2.041 Å) pointing to the (1)A(1) (d(π)(6)) ground state; the existence of this spin state was corroborated by magnetic susceptibility measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy. In contrast, the X-ray structure of the phenolate complex [Fe(III)(hapMen)(2)]ClO(4), determined at 100 K, demonstrated stabilization of the ferric state; the compression of the coordinate bonds at the metal center is in accord with the (2)T(2) (d(π)(5)) ground state. Magnetic susceptibility measurements along with EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopic techniques have shown that the iron(III) complexes are spin-crossover (SCO) materials. The spin transition within the [Fe(III)N(4)O(2)](+) chromophore was modulated with alkyl substituents to afford two-step and one-step (6)A(1) ↔ (2)T(2) transformations in [Fe(III)(hapMen)(2)]ClO(4) and [Fe(III)(hapEen)(2)]ClO(4), respectively. Previously, none of the X-salRen- and X-sal(2)trien-based ferric spin-crossover compounds exhibited a stepwise transition. The optical spectra of the LS iron(II) and SCO iron(III) complexes display intense d(π) → p(π)* and p(π) → d(π) CT visible absorptions, respectively, which account for the spectacular color differences. All the complexes are redox-active; as expected, the one-electron oxidative process in the divalent compounds occurs at higher redox potentials than does the reverse process in the trivalent compounds. The cyclic voltammograms of the latter compounds reveal irreversible electrochemical generation of the phenoxyl radical. Finally, the H(2)salen-type quadridentate ketimine H(2)hapen complexed with an equivalent amount of iron(III) to afford the μ-oxo-monobridged dinuclear complex [{Fe(III)(hapen)}(2)(μ-O)] exhibiting a distorted square-pyramidal geometry at the metal centers and considerable antiferromagnetic coupling of spins (J ≈ -99 cm(-1)).
