Uptake, translocation, and metabolism of anthracene in tea plants

The origin of 9, 10-anthraquinone (AQ) contamination in tea remains unclear at present. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that AQ could be produced from the precursor anthracene in tea plantations. To test this hypothesis, the uptake, translocation, and transformation of anthracene in tea (Camellia sinensis) seedlings using hydroponic experimentation was investigated. Anthracene concentrations in tea tissues rose with increased anthracene exposure, which in the roots were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those in aboveground parts at the end of the exposure. These results indicated that anthracene tended to be adsorbed into tea seedling via the roots and accumulated largely within roots. The three main pathways of anthracene degradation in tea seedlings were suggested: oxygen was incorporated in the 9^th and 10^th positions of anthracene resulting in AQ (I) and anthrone (II), and naphthalene was formed by ring fission of anthracene via methylanthracene (III). The principal anthracene metabolites were AQ and anthrone. The concentrations of AQ, like anthrone, were markedly elevated in the roots than those in stems throughout the entire exposure period. Moreover, the translocation factors for anthracene and its primary metabolites AQ and anthrone from roots to stems were persistently lower than 0.1, demonstrating a poor translocation from roots to the aboveground regions. However, tea seedlings could take anthracene up from water and translocate it to the leaves. It was a possible risk for AQ contamination in tea leaves continuously exposed to anthracene for long periods of time because tea plants were perennial crops.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) in wetland soil and Suaeda salsa from intertidal Laizhou Bay, North China: Levels, distribution, and soil-plant transfer model

Wetlands have attracted much attention due to releases of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and other emerging contaminants into this particular environment. Here, Suaeda salsa plants and wetland soils collected from Laizhou Bay, North China, were analyzed to investigate the levels, distribution, and soil-plant transfer of OPEs in these ecosystems. The Σ₁₈OPEs concentrations ranged from 137 to 386 ng/g dry weight (dw), whereas in rhizosphere the concentrations were between 99.8 and 198 ng/g dw. Suaeda salsa rhizosphere could promote the absorption of OPEs in wetlands, and Suaeda salsa root presents a greater rate of absorption. The Σ₁₈OPEs concentrations ranged from 32.9 to 56.8 ng/g dw in roots, 3.93 to 7.51 ng/g dw in stems, and 2.79 to 4.06 ng/g dw in leaves. Log RCFs, log TF_r-s and log TF_s-l showed no significant correlations with their log K_OW, indicating the complexity of uptake and translocation in the natural environment. Predictive model for the OPEs availability to Suaeda salsa was established from the experimental data. The field-based BCFs of all OPEs were dependent on K_OW, decreased with increasing K_OW. This study provides important insights into the phytoremediation potential of OPEs using Suaeda salsa as an effective strategy and their role in environmental risk assessment of OPEs in wetlands.

Suspended particulate matter (SPM)-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in lakes and reservoirs across a large geographical scale

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) plays a key role in the environmental fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in lake environment. However, less is known about the occurrence, compositions and sources of SPM-bound PAHs as well as the correlations between SPM-bound PAHs and different suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) on large geographical scale. In this study, we focused on the SPM-bound PAHs in 46 lakes and reservoirs across China to fill this gap. Our results showed that the concentrations of Σ₂₀ PAHs ranged from 334 to 38427 ng·g^-1 with a geometric mean (GM) of 3915 ng·g^-1. The occurrence of SPM-bound PAHs in this study was at a moderate level with large variations, which was associated with location and water depth according to linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Phenanthrene (Phe) was investigated as the overwhelming species with a GM of 1777 ng·g^-1, and was followed by fluoranthene (Fla), fluorene (Flu) and pyrene (Pyr) with GMs of 499 ng·g^-1, 276 ng·g^-1 and 184 ng·g^-1, respectively. The profiles of SPM-bound PAHs were primarily dominated by low-ring PAHs ranging from 56.0% to 97.1% (85.5% ± 7.7%, mean ± standard deviation). Four diagnostic ratios were applied for preliminary diagnoses, but inconsistent results were obtained in most samples. Ridge regression was applied to ascertain the potential influences of different SPOM on SPM-bound PAHs. The results revealed that the presence of SPM-bound PAHs was not only influenced by anthropogenic emissions, but also associated with biogenic organic matter. Our results provided a higher explanation than those just preliminarily estimated by total organic carbon (TOC). Nevertheless, there still exist over 50% of variance unexplained for most PAHs, and further study could focus more on the information of SPOM structures and potential local effects.

Sediment information on natural and anthropogenic-induced change of connected water systems in Chagan Lake, North China

This study discusses changes in connected water systems in Chagan Lake induced by the interference of natural and human activities, based on the analysis of sediment characteristics. In this study, the following sediment characteristics were investigated in the lake area, the natural supply area, and the lake drainage area: mineral composition; particle size distribution; magnetic susceptibility; nutrient content; content of isotopes δ¹³C_org and δ¹⁵N; and content of heavy metals and of metallic oxides. The results showed that silicate minerals quartz, orthoclase, and anorthose were abundant in the whole lake water system. Quartz accumulated more easily in the lake area, while carbonate masses in the lake mainly came from the Huolinhe River. Moving from the lake area to the water diversion and drainage areas, fine particles clearly decreased, while coarse particles significantly increased due to the increase in hydraulic erosion. The main sources of nutrients and of organic matter are: the residual of the drainage from the Qianguo irrigated areas; the surrounding villages and the tourist area; and the decomposition of aquatic organisms. A large number of anthropogenic heavy metals, such as Hg, Cu, and As, were accumulated in the artificial water diversion area and in the farmland drainage area. This study indicates that recovering the original connected water system during the wet season, while at the same time enhancing water supply during the dry season could improve the ecological quality of Chagan Lake.

Differences in phytoaccumulation of organic pollutants in freshwater submerged and emergent plants

Plants play an important role as sinks for or indicators of semivolatile organic pollutants, however most studies have focused on terrestrial plants and insufficient information has been obtained on aquatic plants to clarify the accumulation of organic pollutants via air-to-leaf vs. water-to-leaf pathways. The presence of p, p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p, p'-DDE), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and 9 substituted PAHs (s-PAHs), including oxy-PAHs and sulfur-PAHs, in 10 submerged and emergent plants collected from Lake Dianchi was analyzed in this study. Relatively low concentrations of p, p'-DDE (ND to 2.22 ng/g wet weight [ww]) and HCB (0.24-0.84 ng/g ww) and high levels of PAHs (46-244 ng/g ww) and s-PAHs (6.0-46.8 ng/g ww) were observed in the aquatic plants. Significantly higher concentrations of most of the compounds were detected in the leaves of the submerged plants than in those of the emergent plants. The percentages of concentration difference relative to the concentrations in the submerged plants were estimated at 55%, 40%, 10%-69% and 0.5%-79% for p, p'-DDE, HCB, PAHs, and s-PAHs, respectively. The percentages were found to increase significantly with an increase in log Kow, suggesting that the high level of phytoaccumulation of pollutants in aquatic plants is due to hydrophobicity-dependent diffusion via the water-to-leaf pathway and the mesophyll morphology of submerged plants.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and their associated environmental risks in a large shallow lake in north China

Eighteen selected pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), consisting of five non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals (N-APs), four sulfonamides (SAs), four tetracyclines (TCs), four macrolides (MCs), and one quinolone (QN) were detected in water, pore water, and sediment samples from Baiyangdian Lake, China. A total of 31 water samples and 29 sediment samples were collected in March 2017. Caffeine was detected with 100% frequency in surface water, pore water, and sediment samples. Carbamazepine was detected with 100% frequency in surface water and sediment samples. Five N-APs were prominent, with mean concentrations of 4.90-266.24 ng/l in surface water and 5.07-14.73 μg/kg in sediment samples. Four MCs were prominent, with mean concentrations of 0.97-29.92 ng/l in pore water samples. The total concentrations of the different classes of PPCPs followed the order: N-APs (53.26%) > MCs (25.39) > SAs (10.06%) > TCs (7.64%) > QNs (3.64%) in surface water; N-APs (42.70%) > MCs (25.43%) > TCs (14.69%) > SAs (13.90%) > QNs (3.24%) in sediment samples, and MCs (42.12%) > N-APs (34.80%) > SAs (11.71%) > TCs (7.48%) > QNs (3.88%) in pore water samples. The geographical differences of PPCP concentrations were largely due to anthropogenic activities. Sewage discharged from Baoding City and human activities around Baiyangdian Lake were the main sources of PPCPs in the lake. An environmental risk assessment for the upper quartile concentration was undertaken using calculated risk quotients and indicated a low or medium-high risk from 18 PPCPs in Baiyangdian Lake and its five upstream rivers.

Spatial distribution and composition of aliphatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and hopanes in superficial sediments of the coral reefs of the Persian Gulf, Iran

This study is the first quantitative report on petroleum biomarkers from the coral reefs systems of the Persian Gulf. 120 reef surface sediment samples from ten fragile coral reef ecosystems were collected and analyzed for grain size, biogenic elements, elemental ratios, and petroleum biomarkers (n-alkanes, PAHs¹ and Hopanes) to assess the sources and early diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter. The mean grain size of the reef sediments ranged from 13.56 to 37.11% (Clay), 26.92 to 51.73% (Sand) and 35.97 to 43.85% (Silt). TOC² (3.35-9.72 mg.g^-1) and TON³ (0.4-1.10 mg.g^-1) were identified as influencing factors on the accumulation of petroleum hydrocarbons, whilst BC⁴ (1.08-3.28 mg.g^-1) and TIN⁵ (0.13-0.86) did not exhibit any determining effect. Although BC and TIN demonstrated heterogeneous spatial distribution, TOC and TON indicated homogenous distribution with continually upward trend in concentration from the east to west ward of the Gulf. The mean calculated TOC/TN ratios vacillated according to the stations (p < 0.05) from 2.96 at Shidvar Island to 8.64 at Hengam Island. The high TOC/TN ratios were observed in the Hengam (8.64), Kharg (8.04) and Siri (6.29), respectively, suggesting a predominant marine origin. The mean concentrations of ∑C_11-35n-alkanes, ∑30 PAHs and ∑9Hopanes were found in the ranges of 385-937 μg.g^-1dw, (overall mean:590 μg.g^-1dw), 326-793 ng.g^-1dw (499 ng.g^-1dw), 88 to 568 ng.g^-1 d (258 ng.g^-1dw), respectively. Higher concentrations of detected petroleum biomarkers in reef sediments were chiefly distributed near main industrial areas, Kharg, Lavan and Siri, whilst the lower concentrations were in Hormoz and Qeshm. In addition, one-way ANOVA⁶ analysis demonstrated considerably significant differences (p < 0.05) among concentration of detected total petroleum hydrocarbons between most sampling locations. Some sampling sites especially Kharg, Lavan, Siri and Lark indicated higher concentration of n-alkanes due to the higher maintenance of organic matter by high clay content in the sediments. Furthermore, most sediment samples, except for Hormoz, Qeshm and Hengam showed an even carbon preference for n-alkanes which could be correlated to bacterial input. NPMDS⁷ analysis also demonstrated that among the congeners of petroleum biomarkers, n-C₁₂,n-C₁₄, n-C₁₆,n-C₁₈ and n-C₂₀ for n-alkanes, Phe⁸ and Naph⁹ along with their Alkyl homologues for PAHs (2-3 rings accounted for 60%) and C₃₀αβ and C₂₉αβ for Hopanes were discriminated from their other congeners in the whole study area. Our results based on the PCA¹⁰ analysis and diagnostic indices of AHs¹¹ and PAHs along with ring classification of PAHs, in addition, the ubiquitous presence of UCM,¹² and Hopanes revealed that the main sources of the pollution were petroleum and petroleum combustion mainly from offshore oil exploration and extraction, discharge of pollutants from shipping activities.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water from three estuaries of China: Distribution, seasonal variations and ecological risk assessment

The distribution, seasonal variations and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water from three estuaries in Hai River Basin of China, which has been suffering from different anthropogenic pressures, were investigated. In three estuaries, the average concentration of ΣPAHs was the lowest in Luan River estuary, followed by Hai River estuary, and the highest in Zhangweixin River estuary. There were significant seasonal variations in ΣPAHs, the concentrations of ΣPAHs were higher in November than in May and August. The composition profiles of PAHs in different sites were significantly different, and illustrated seasonal variations. Generally, 2-ring (Nap) and 3-ring PAHs (Acp, Fl and Phe) were the most abundant components at most sampling sites in three estuaries. The PAHs in three estuaries were mainly originated from pyrogenic sources. A method based on toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) and risk quotient (RQ) was proposed to assess the ecological risk of ΣPAHs, with the ecological risk of individual PAHs being considered separately. The results showed that the ecological risks caused by ΣPAHs were high in Hai River estuary and Zhangweixin River estuary, and moderate in Luan River estuary. The mean values of ecological risk in August were lower than those in November. The contributions of individual PAHs to ecological risk were different in May, August and November. 3-ring and 4-ring PAHs accounted for much more ecological risk than 2-ring, 5-ring and 6-ring, although the contributions of 5-ring and 6-ring to ecological risk were higher than these to PAHs concentrations.

Replacing fish meal by food waste to produce lower trophic level fish containing acceptable levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Health risk assessments

This study aimed at using different types of food wastes (mainly containing cereal [food waste A] and meat meal [food waste B]) as major sources of protein to replace the fish meal used in fish feeds to produce quality fish. The traditional fish farming model used to culture low trophic level fish included: bighead, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), grass carp, (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), and mud carp, (Cirrhinus molitorella) of omnivorous chain. The results indicated that grass carp and bighead carp fed with food waste feeds were relatively free of PAHs. The results of health risk assessment showed that the fish fed with food waste feeds were safe for consumption from the PAHs perspective.

In situ variations and relationships of water quality index with periphyton function and diversity metrics in Baiyangdian Lake of China

The variations and associations of abiotic and biotic variables in Baiyangdian Lake, China, were analyzed in situ. Abiotic variables included eleven water quality parameters, and were characterized by water quality index (WQI). Biotic variables included periphyton function and diversity metrics. WQI differed in different seasons at sampling sites and the highest value of WQI was observed in October 2009. Periphyton function metrics, expressed by extracellular enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase and leucine aminopeptidase, gross primary productivity and daily respiration rate, and diversity indices, in terms of Shannon diversity index and Berger-Parker abundance index, showed significantly temporal and spatial variations. Regression linear analysis illustrated a fairly good correlation of WQI with periphyton function and diversity indices, Shannon diversity index was the best correlated with WQI (r = 0.904, P < 0.01), followed by leucine aminopeptidase (r = -0.847, P < 0.01) and Berger-Parker abundance index (r = -0.840, P < 0.01), alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase and gross primary productivity also showed a good inverse correlation with WQI. Redundancy analysis suggested that eleven environmental variables explained a significant amount of the variation in the periphyton community data. The study was helpful for us to understand chemical and ecological status of water quality, and give us messages for monitoring water quality accurately.

Occurrence of antibiotics in water, sediments, aquatic plants, and animals from Baiyangdian Lake in North China

This study investigated the presence and distribution of 22 antibiotics, including eight quinolones, nine sulfonamides and five macrolides, in the water, sediments, and biota samples from Baiyangdian Lake, China. A total of 132 samples were collected in 2008 and 2010, and laboratory analyses revealed that antibiotics were widely distributed in the lake. Sulfonamides were the dominant antibiotics in the water (0.86-1563 ng L(-1)), while quinolones were prominent in sediments (65.5-1166 μg kg(-1)) and aquatic plants (8.37-6532 μg kg(-1)). Quinolones (17.8-167 μg kg(-1)) and macrolides [from below detection limit (BDL) to 182 μg kg(-1)] were often found in aquatic animals and birds. Salvinia natans exhibited the highest bioaccumulation capability for quinolones among three species of aquatic plants. Geographical differences of antibiotic concentrations were greatly due to anthropogenic activities. Sewage discharged from Baoding City was likely the main source of antibiotics in the lake. Risk assessment of antibiotics on aquatic organisms suggested that algae and aquatic plants might be at risk in surface water, while animals were likely not at risk.
