Gold-silver bimetallic porous nanowires for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Three-dimensional nanoporous gold/gold nanoparticles substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection of illegal additives in food

Owing to their nanoscale size and porous structure, both colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and nanoporous gold (NPG) have demonstrated good and stable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity, and are therefore widely used as SERS substrates for the rapid detection of various components in food, environmental, biological, and other samples. In this study, we fabricated a novel, sensitive, and reproducible composite three-dimensional (3D) substrate for rapid SERS-based detection of illegal additives in food products. AuNPs and NPGs were prepared by chemical reduction and chemical dealloying methods, with the particle size of AuNPs about 60 nm and the pore size of NPG in the range of 5-36 nm. The AuNPs were then assembled on the surface of NPG to form the composite substrate 3D-NPG/AuNPs, which was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and other methods. Finally, the new SERS substrate combined with a portable Raman spectrometer was used to detect the illegal food additives 6-benzylaminopurine and melamine, with detection limits of 1 × 10-9 M and 5 × 10-7 M respectively. We further analyzed the relationship between the dealloying time-controlled morphology and the SERS properties of NPG, demonstrating that 3D-NPG/AuNPs as a novel SERS substrate have strong practical application potential in the rapid detection of food additives and other substances.

Recent Advances in the Fabrication and Functionalization of Flexible Optical Biosensors: Toward Smart Life-Sciences Applications

Over the last 30 years, optical biosensors based on nanostructured materials have obtained increasing interest since they allow the screening of a wide variety of biomolecules with high specificity, low limits of detection, and great sensitivity. Among them, flexible optical platforms have the advantage of adapting to non-planar surfaces, suitable for in vivo and real-time monitoring of diseases and assessment of food safety. In this review, we summarize the newest and most advanced platforms coupling optically active materials (noble metal nanoparticles) and flexible substrates giving rise to hybrid nanomaterials and/or nanocomposites, whose performances are comparable to the ones obtained with hard substrates (e.g., glass and semiconductors). We focus on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based biosensors. We show that large-scale, cost-effective plasmonic platforms can be realized with the currently available techniques and we emphasize the open issues associated with this topic.

Gold-Etched Silver Nanowire Endoscopy: Toward a Widely Accessible Platform for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering-Based Analysis in Living Cells

Recently, our group introduced the use of silver nanowires (AgNWs) as novel non-invasive endoscopic probes for detecting intracellular Raman signals. This method, although innovative and promising, relies exclusively on the plasmonic waveguiding effect for signal enhancement. It, therefore, requires sophisticated operational tools and protocols, drastically limiting its applicability. Herein, an advanced strategy is offered to significantly enhance the performance of these endoscopic probes, making this approach widely accessible and versatile for cellular studies. By uniformly forming gold structures on the smooth AgNW surface via a galvanic replacement reaction, the density of the light coupling points along the whole probe surface is drastically increased, enabling high surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) efficiency upon solely focusing the excitation light on the gold-etched AgNW. The applicability of these gold-etched AgNW probes for molecular sensing in cells is demonstrated by detecting site-specific and high-resolved SERS spectra of cell compartment-labeling dyes, namely, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole in the nucleus and 3,3'-dioctadecyloxacarbocyanine on the membrane. The remarkable spectral sensitivity achieved provides essential structural information of the analytes, indicating the overall potential of the proposed approach for cellular studies of drug interactions with biomolecular items.

Chromaticity-tunable white random lasing based on a microfluidic channel

The color and/or chromaticity controllability of random lasing is a key factor to promote practical applications of random lasers as high luminance sources for speckle-free imaging. Here, white coherent random lasing with tunable chromaticity is obtained by using broadband enhancement Au-Ag nanowires as scatterers and the resonance energy transfer process between different dyes in the capillary microfluidic channel. Red, green and blue random lasers are separately fabricated with low thresholds, benefiting from the plasmonic resonance of the nanogaps and/or nanotips with random distribution and sizes within Au-Ag nanowires and positive optical feedback provided by the capillary wall. A white random laser system is then designed through reorganizing the three random lasers. And, the chromaticity of the white random laser is flexibly tunable by adjusting pump power density. In addition, the white random laser has anisotropic spectra due to the coupling role between the lasers. This characteristic is then utilized to obtain different random lasing with different chromaticity over a broad visible range. The results may provide a basis for applying random laser in the field of high brightness illumination, biomedical imaging, and sensors.

Highly sensitive detection of influenza virus with SERS aptasensor

Highly sensitive and rapid technology of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was applied to create aptasensors for influenza virus detection. SERS achieves 10⁶−10⁹ times signal amplification, yielding excellent sensitivity, whereas aptamers to hemagglutinin provide a specific recognition of the influenza virus. Aptamer RHA0385 was demonstrated to have essentially broad strain-specificity toward both recombinant hemagglutinins and the whole viruses. To achieve high sensitivity, a sandwich of primary aptamers, influenza virus and secondary aptamers was assembled. Primary aptamers were attached to metal particles of a SERS substrate, and influenza viruses were captured and bound with secondary aptamers labelled with Raman-active molecules. The signal was affected by the concentration of both primary and secondary aptamers. The limit of detection was as low as 1 · 10⁻⁴ hemagglutination units per probe as tested for the H3N2 virus (A/England/42/72). Aptamer-based sensors provided recognition of various influenza viral strains, including H1, H3, and H5 hemagglutinin subtypes. Therefore, the aptasensors could be applied for fast and low-cost strain-independent determination of influenza viruses.

Threshold Switching Induced by Controllable Fragmentation in Silver Nanowire Networks

Silver nanowire (Ag NW) networks have been widely studied because of a great potential in various electronic devices. However, nanowires usually undergo a fragmentation process at elevated temperatures due to the Rayleigh instability that is a result of reduction of surface/interface energy. In this case, the nanowires become completely insulating due to the formation of randomly distributed Ag particles with a large distance and further applications are hindered. Herein, we demonstrate a novel concept based on the combination of ultraviolet/ozone irradiation and a low-temperature annealing process to effectively utilize and control the fragmentation behavior to realize the resistive switching performances. In contrast to the conventional fragmentation, the designed Ag/AgO_x interface facilitates a unique morphology of short nanorod-like segments or chains of tiny Ag nanoparticles with a very small spacing distance, providing conduction paths for achieving the tunneling process between the isolated fragments under the electric field. On the basis of this specific morphology, the Ag NW network has a tunable resistance and shows volatile threshold switching characteristics with a high selectivity, which is the ON/OFF current ratio in selector devices. Our concept exploits a new function of Ag NW network, i.e., resistive switching, which can be developed by designing a controllable fragmentation.

Hollow Pd-Ag Composite Nanowires for Fast Responding and Transparent Hydrogen Sensors

Pd based alloy materials with hollow nanostructures are ideal hydrogen (H₂) sensor building blocks because of their double-H₂ sensing active sites (interior and exterior side of hollow Pd alloy) and fast response. In this work, for the first time, we report a simple fabrication process for preparing hollow Pd-Ag alloy nanowires (Pd@Ag HNWs) by using the electrodeposition of lithographically patterned silver nanowires (NWs), followed by galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) to form palladium. By controlling the GRR time of aligned Ag NWs within an aqueous Pd²⁺-containing solution, the compositional transition and morphological evolution from Ag NWs to Pd@Ag HNWs simultaneously occurred, and the relative atomic ratio between Pd and Ag was controlled. Interestingly, a GRR duration of 17 h transformed Ag NWs into Pd@Ag HNWs that showed enhanced H₂ response and faster sensing response time, reduced 2.5-fold, as compared with Ag NWs subjected to a shorter GRR period of 10 h. Furthermore, Pd@Ag HNWs patterned on the colorless and flexible polyimide (cPI) substrate showed highly reversible H₂ sensing characteristics. To further demonstrate the potential use of Pd@Ag HNWs as sensing layers for all-transparent, wearable H₂ sensing devices, we patterned the Au NWs perpendicular to Pd@Ag HNWs to form a heterogeneous grid-type metallic NW electrode which showed reversible H₂ sensing properties in both bent and flat states.

Sensitive Detection of Rhodamine B in Condiments Using Surface-Enhanced Resonance Raman Scattering (SERRS) Silver Nanowires as Substrate

In this paper, a facile large-scale preparation of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) substrates for the determination of Rhodamine B (RhB) based on silver nanowires (Ag NWs) has been developed. The morphology, structure, and properties of as-prepared Ag NWs are characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Ag NWs were assembled onto glass slides through a self-assembly method. Moreover, in our experiment, as-prepared Ag NWs@glass were used as a SERRS substrate to detect RhB at the excitation wavelength of 532 nm. Experimental conditions such as pH value and soaking time on SERRS performance were studied and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the SERRS intensity at 1648 cm^-1 exhibited a linear relationship with the concentration of RhB in the range of 1.0 × 10^-9-1.0 × 10^-5mol L^-1 and detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio [S/N] = 3) is as low as 0.3 nmol L^-1. The corresponding correlation coefficient of the linear equation was 0.996. This method based on Ag NWs@glass for the detection of RhB in three kinds of condiment was investigated. The limits of detection (LODs) for RhB were 0.35 µg/g in chili powder, 0.14 µg/g in chili sauce, and 0.02 µg/g in Chinese prickly ash. The relative standard deviations (RSD) were between 2.18% and 4.56% (n = 3) and recoveries at three levels were in the range of 80.0-98.7% for different spiked food products. Moreover, the results showed that the proposed method was sensitive, convenient, and feasible for the determination of RhB in condiments.

Nanoporous Gold Nanoparticles and Au/Al2O3 Hybrid Nanoparticles with Large Tunability of Plasmonic Properties

Nanoporous gold nanoparticles (NPG-NPs) with controlled particle size and pore size are fabricated via a combination of solid-state dewetting and a subsequent dealloying process. Because of the combined effects of size and porosity, the NPG-NPs exhibit greater plasmonic tunability and significantly higher local field enhancement as compared to solid NPs. The effects of the nanoscale porosity and pore size on the optical extinction are investigated for the NPG-NPs with different particle sizes experimentally and theoretically. The influences of both porosity and pore size on the plasmonic properties are very complicated and clearly different for small particles with dominated dipole mode and large particles with dominated quadrupole mode. Au/Al₂O₃ hybrid porous NPs with controlled porosity and composition ratio are fabricated through plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition of Al₂O₃ into the porous structure. In the Au/Al₂O₃ hybrid porous NPs, both Au and Al₂O₃ components are bicontinuously percolated over the entire structure. A further red shift of the plasmon peak is observed in the hybrid NPs due to the change of the environmental refractive index. The high tunability of the plasmonic resonances in the NPG-NPs and the hybrid porous NPs can be very useful for many applications in sensing biological and organic molecules.

Site-Selective Controlled Dealloying Process of Gold-Silver Nanowire Array: a Simple Approach towards Long-Term Stability and Sensitivity Improvement of SERS Substrate

Limitations of achieving highly sensitive and stable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate greatly concern the suitable method for fabrication of large-area plasmonic nanostructures. Herein we report a simple approach using template-based synthesis to create a highly ordered two-dimensional array of gold-silver alloy nanowires, followed by the controlled dealloying process. This particular step of mild acid etching (15%v/v nitric acid for 5 min) allowed the formation of Raman hot spots on the nanowire tips while maintaining the integrity of highly active alloy composition and rigid nanowire array structure. Full consideration of SERS substrate performance was accomplished using 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) as a probe molecule. Exceedingly higher SERS signal (150-fold) can be achieved with respect to typical gold film substrate. Moreover, an excellent stability of SERS substrate was also determined for over 3 months storage time. In contrast to the previous studies which stability improvement was accomplished at a cost of sensitivity reduction, the simultaneous improvement of sensitivity and stability makes the controlled dealloying process an excellent choice of SERS substrate fabrication. In addition, uniformity and reproducibility studies indicated satisfactory results with the acceptable values of relative standard deviation.

High-Yield Synthesis of Hollow Octahedral Silver Nanocages with Controllable Pack Density and Their High-Performance Sers Application

Nanoparticle-assembled octahedral Ag nanocages with sharp edges have been successfully synthesized through a Cu₂ O-based template-assisted strategy. In the reaction system, Ag nanoparticles can be self-assembled on the surface of Cu₂ O octahedrons, which is accomplished by the reduction of Ag⁺ by NaBH₄ in the presence of sodium citrate as a capping agent. The hollow octahedral Ag nanocages are obtained after removing the inner Cu₂ O cores with acetic acid. According to the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy characterization, the Ag nanocages are weaved by small nanoparticles, the rough surfaces are bestrewed with pores and sharp edges. It is found that the pack density of Ag nanoparticles strongly affects the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activities. The as-prepared 1.05-Ag cages with optimal pack density have suitable interparticle distance and suitable size of pores, which significantly enhance SERS signals. The SERS signals of rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules can be detected at an ultralow concentration of 10^-14 m when 1.05-Ag cages are used as substrates. In addition to sensitivity, 1.05-Ag cages also exhibit good reproducibility. It is expected that the ultrahigh sensitivity will endow the Ag nanocages to become a promising candidate as high-performance SERS-based chemical sensor.

Single-excitation dual-color coherent lasing by tuning resonance energy transfer processes in porous structured nanowires

Single-excitation dual-color coherent lasing was achieved in a mixed random system of a binary dye and the suspension of gold-silver porous nanowires with plenty of nanogaps. This greatly enhanced the local electromagnetic field in the visible range and guaranteed a low threshold and high Q factor (>10 000) operator for simultaneous dual-color lasing. By tuning the resonance energy transfer process in the stimulated emission, triple output modes (single chartreuse lasing, chartreuse and red dual-color lasing, and single red coherent lasing) were easily obtained. This triple-mode coherent random lasing introduces a new approach to designing multi-functional micro-optoelectronic devices for multi-color speckle-free imaging and interference.

Catalytic oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol using Au-Ag nanotubes investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enables ultrasensitive detection of adsorbed species at the catalyst surface. However, it is quite difficult to combine catalytic and SERS activities on the same material. Here we report the application of well-defined Au-Ag nanotubes as both SERS substrates and catalysts for the oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol. The species adsorbed on the catalyst surfaces at different reaction times were analyzed by SERS. The bimetallic nanotubes prepared via a simple galvanic replacement reaction are highly active in the oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol, but do not avoid a radical-chain reaction and the cleavage of the carbon-carbon double bond. A comparison between changes in bulk composition and the nature of adsorbed species at the surface of the catalyst over time suggests that cinnamaldehyde is formed on the catalyst surface (metal-catalyzed oxidation) and benzaldehyde is probably formed in the bulk solution via a radical-chain pathway. In the presence of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol, the radical-chain reaction is suppressed and the oxidation reaction produces cinnamaldehyde.

Prospects for plasmonic hot spots in single molecule SERS towards the chemical imaging of live cells

Single molecule surface enhanced Raman scattering (SM-SERS) is a highly local effect occurring at sharp edges, interparticle junctions and crevices or other geometries with a sharp nanoroughness of plasmonic nanostructures (“hot spots”) for an analyte detection.

Plasma jet printing of electronic materials on flexible and nonconformal objects

We present a novel approach for the room-temperature fabrication of conductive traces and their subsequent site-selective dielectric encapsulation for use in flexible electronics. We have developed an aerosol-assisted atmospheric pressure plasma-based deposition process for efficiently depositing materials on flexible substrates. Silver nanowire conductive traces and silicon dioxide dielectric coatings for encapsulation were deposited using this approach as a demonstration. The paper substrate with silver nanowires exhibited a very low change in resistance upon 50 cycles of systematic deformation, exhibiting high mechanical flexibility. The applicability of this process to print conductive traces on nonconformal 3D objects was also demonstrated through deposition on a 3D-printed thermoplastic object, indicating the potential to combine plasma printing with 3D printing technology. The role of plasma here includes activation of the material present in the aerosol for deposition, increasing the deposition rate, and plasma polymerization in the case of inorganic coatings. The demonstration here establishes a low-cost, high-throughput, and facile process for printing electronic components on nonconventional platforms.

Silver nanowires-based signal amplification for CdSe quantum dots electrochemiluminescence immunoassay

A novel silver-cysteine hybrid nanowires (SCNWs) with many reactive carboxyl and amine groups were prepared, which enable them to be used as idea signal amplifying labels in bioassays. A large number of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) were loaded on the SCNWs to develop amplified SCNWs-QDs electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal probe. The PAMAM dendrimer-SCNWs nanohybrids covered on the electrode constructed an effective antibody immobilization matrix and made the immobilized biomolecules hold high stability and bioactivity. Based on the specific sandwich immunoreaction strategy, the detection antibody (Ab2)-SCNWs-QDs ECL signal probe was applied to the sensitive signal-on ECL immunoassay of human IgG. The SCNWs-QDs ECL not only opens promising new ECL emitting species, but also promotes the development of novel ECL signal-transition platforms for biosensing devices.

Large-scale uniform Au nanodisk arrays fabricated via x-ray interference lithography for reproducible and sensitive SERS substrate

Large-scale Au nanodisk arrays on Si substrate are successfully fabricated via x-ray interference lithography and followed by electron-beam vapor deposition. The Au nanodisk arrays exhibit a significant, uniform, and reproducible surface enhancement on Raman scattering signal, which enables the detection of R6G as low as 10(-8) M with an enhancement factor of 10(6). Importantly, the Au nanodisk arrays SERS-active substrates with uniformly high sensitivity also have high reproducibility and stability. The diameters of the nanodisks and the inter-disk distance can be simply optimized to obtain high enhancement in Raman signal by varying exposure time and development time in XIL process. The electric fields of the Au nanodisks with various diameters and inter-disk distance simulated by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) techniques further confirm that the Raman signal enhancement of Au nanodisks is determined by the diameters of nanodisks and the inter-disk distance of nanodisks. The Au/Ag double-layer bimetal nanodisk arrays are also fabricated which show a significant increase in the Raman signal enhancement than that of the Au nanodisk arrays. XIL nanofabrication appears to be a feasible approach to prepare uniform and reproducible SERS-active substrates with high sensitivity for practical SERS applications.

Multifunctional Fe3O4@TiO2@Au magnetic microspheres as recyclable substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Herein, we demonstrate the design and fabrication of multifunctional triplex Fe3O4@TiO2@Au core-shell magnetic microspheres (MSs), which show excellent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity with high reproducibility and stability. In addition, due to their excellent catalytic properties, the as-prepared Fe3O4@TiO2@Au magnetic MSs can clean themselves by photocatalytic degradation of target molecules adsorbed onto the substrate under irradiation with visible light, and can be re-used for several cycles with convenient magnetic separability. The influence of the size and distribution of Au nanoparticles (NPs) on the Fe3O4@TiO2 beads is investigated. The optimized samples employing Au NPs of 15 nm size and an areal density of about 2120 Au NPs on every MS show the best SERS activity and recyclable performance. The experimental results show that these magnetic MSs indicate a new route in eliminating the 'single-use' problem of traditional SERS substrates and exhibit their applicability as analytical tools for the detection of different molecular species.

Electrospun TiO₂ nanofelt surface-decorated with Ag nanoparticles as sensitive and UV-cleanable substrate for surface enhanced Raman scattering

In this study, the free-standing electrospun nanofibrous mat (i.e., nanofelt) consisting of anatase-phase TiO2 nanofibers with diameters of ∼200 nm was prepared, and the nanofelt was subsequently surface-decorated with Ag nanoparticles via an electroless plating method. The sensitivity toward surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and UV-cleanable property of electrospun TiO2/Ag nanofelt were then investigated. In the SERS tests, the target analyte (i.e., 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, Rhodamine 6G, and 4-aminothiophenol) was first adsorbed onto the TiO2/Ag nanofelt as the probe analyte; this was followed by the measurements of Raman intensity and SERS maps. Thereafter, the nanofelt adsorbed with target analyte was cleaned and regenerated/recovered upon UV irradiation in O2-saturated water, and the removal of target analyte was attributed to photodegradation property of anatase-phase TiO2. This study suggested that the electrospun TiO2/Ag nanofelt would be promising as SERS-active substrate with UV-cleanable property for cost-effective and reproducible SERS applications.

Cascade-pumped random lasers with coherent emission formed by Ag-Au porous nanowires

A series of sequentially cascade-pumped random lasers is reported. It consists of three random lasers in which the Ag-Au bimetallic porous nanowires play the role of scatterers, and the gain materials are coumarin 440 (C440), coumarin 153 (C153), and rhodamine 6G (R6G), respectively. The random laser with C440 is first pumped by a 355 nm pulsed laser. The emission of C440 pumps the C153, and the emission of C153 pumps the R6G sequentially. Low-threshold coherent emissions from the three random lasers are observed. The cascade-pumped random lasers can be achieved easily with low cost and can be used in applications conveniently.

Wet-chemical approaches to porous nanowires with linear, spiral, and meshy topologies

We report universal approaches for porous nanowires (NWs), and porous NWs with spiral and meshy topologies that have been developed via anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) confined wet-chemical synthesis. Materials such as CuOx, Pd, and Cu NWs are taken as examples for porous NWs and porous NWs with spiral and meshy topologies. Immediate benefits are demonstrated in hydrogen sensors as examples. We observed that hydrogen concentrations as low as 0.2% (v/v) were detected, that critical temperatures of the reverse sensing behavior as low as 239.9 K were measured and that better baseline-stability was confirmed compared with those fabricated with pure Pd NWs. Our approaches are anticipated to work on the synthesis of the porous NWs of other materials that could be obtained via wet-chemistry with potential as candidates for the next generation nanodevices (e.g., gas sensors) and other applications (e.g., catalysts).

The development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering as a detection modality for portable in vitro diagnostics: progress and challenges

This perspective provides an overview of the diverse surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based sensor platforms that have been developed for in vitro diagnostic applications. To provide focus, protein and nucleic acid detection assays based on the principle of extrinsic SERS sensing are emphasized, as well as their potential for translation to fully integrated point-of-care (POC) test platforms. The development of intrinsic SERS sensors, which are predicated on the direct detection of analytes by laser excitation, entails unique opportunities and challenges deserving of their own attention. As the robust sensing of disease pathogens and cancers in both clinical facilities and limited resource settings is the targeted objective of many next-generation biosensors, the majority of the research progress summarized here centers on SERS sensors developed for the rapid, sensitive and selective detection of disease-causing pathogens and biomarkers. In our effort to communicate a realistic assessment of the progress that has been made and the challenges that lie ahead, we avoid an overtly optimistic appraisal of the current status of SERS diagnostics that does not tacitly acknowledge the difficulties inherent in aligning SERS-based technologies alongside ELISA and PCR technologies as a complementary method for bioanalyte detection possessing unique advantages.

Electrospun nanofibrous membranes surface-decorated with silver nanoparticles as flexible and active/sensitive substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

The development of novel nanomaterials with well-controlled morphologies/structures to achieve excellent activities/sensitivities in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is crucial in advancing the high-performance SERS detections of chemical and biological species. In this study, amidoxime surface-functionalized polyacrylonitrile (ASFPAN) nanofibrous membranes surface-decorated with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were prepared via the technique of electrospinning followed by the method of seed-mediated electroless plating. High SERS activities/sensitivities were observed from the ASFPAN-Ag NPs nanofibrous membranes, while the density and size of Ag NPs had an important impact on the SERS activity/sensitivity. The results confirmed that the enhancement of Raman signals is due to the presence of hot spots between/among Ag NPs on the nanofiber surfaces. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes surface-decorated with Ag NPs were mechanical flexible/resilient and could be used as highly active/sensitive SERS substrates for a broad range of applications.

Co-assembly of Au nanorods with Ag nanowires within polymer nanofiber matrix for enhanced SERS property by electrospinning

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) can be successfully co-assembled with Ag nanowires (AgNWs) to form a kind of AuNR-AgNW nanocomposite by electrostatic attraction, in which the AuNRs are arranged along the long axial direction of the AgNWs with a preferential string-like alignment. The assembled AuNR-AgNW nanocomposites are then further embedded within polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers by electrospinning, by which both AuNRs and AgNWs can be stabilized and arranged along the axis of polymer nanofibers. When the polymer nanofibers are aligned by collecting on a copper mesh with a woven structure, the AuNR-AgNW nanocomposites assembled within the electrospun nanofibers are also arranged. The influences of the AuNR-AgNW assemblies with different amounts of AuNRs attached on AgNWs on the optical properties and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement have been investigated. The resulting AuNR-AgNW/PVA electrospun mats show red-shifted and broader absorption bands and higher SERS performances compared with the normal casting films with randomly dispersed AuNRs and AgNWs, or electrospun mats with monometallic components, due to the order alignment of AuNR-AgNW nanocomposites on a large scale.

Individual nanostructured materials: fabrication and surface-enhanced Raman scattering

The progress of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) microscopy and spectroscopy on individual nanostructured materials has been reviewed in this feature article. After a brief introduction on individual nanomaterial SERS, we provide a systematic overview on the fabrication and SERS studies of individual nanoparticulates, nano-junctions and hierarchical nano-aggregate. These SERS-active nanomaterials have great potential in designing novel highly sensitive SERS substrates for the development of SERS-based sensing devices with a broad range of applications.
