Selective oxidation of glycerol mediated by surface plasmon of gold nanoparticles deposited on titanium dioxide nanowires

This paper describes an alternative method for the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with a particle size of less than 3 nm, using nanoreactors formed by reverse micelles of 1,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate sodium (AOT) and nanoparticle stabilization with l-cysteine, which favor the preparation of nanoparticles with size and shape control, which are homogeneously dispersed (1% by weight) on the support of titanium dioxide nanowires (TNWs). To study the activity and selectivity of the prepared catalyst (AuNPs@TNWs), an aqueous solution of 40 mM glycerol was irradiated with a green laser (λ = 530 nm, power = 100 mW) in the presence of the catalyst and O2 as an oxidant at 22 °C for 6 h, obtaining a glycerol conversion of 86% with a selectivity towards hydroxypyruvic acid (HA) of more than 90%. From the control and reactions, we concluded that the Ti-OH groups promote the glycerol adsorption on the nanowires surface and the surface plasmon of the gold nanoparticles favors the selectivity of the reaction towards the hydroxypyruvic acid.

α-Cleavage of 2,2-Diazido-2,3-dihydroinden-1-one in Solution and Cryogenic Matrices

The Norrish type I (α-cleavage) reaction is an excellent photochemical method for radical-pair formation in solution. However, in cryogenic matrices, the starting material typically re-forms before the radical pair diffuses apart. This study focused on N2 extrusion from an azido alkyl radical to prevent radical-pair recombination. Irradiation of 2,2-diazido-2,3-dihydroinden-1-one (1) in methanol mainly yielded methyl 2-cyanomethylbenzoate (2) and 2-cyanomethylbenzoic acid (3) via α-cleavage. Laser flash photolysis of 1 in argon-saturated acetonitrile resulted in α-cleavage to form triplet biradical 31Br1 (λmax ∼ 410 nm, τ ∼ 400 ns). In contrast, upon irradiation in glassy 2-methyltetrahydrofuran matrices, triplet alkylnitrene 31N was directly detected using electron spin resonance (D/hc = 1.5646 cm-1, E/hc = 0.00161 cm-1) and absorption spectroscopy (λmax = 276 and 341 nm). Irradiation of 1 in argon matrices generated 31N, benzoyl azide 4, singlet benzoylnitrene 14N, and isocyanide 5, as revealed by IR spectroscopy. The experimental results supported by density functional theory calculations [B3PW91/6-311++G(d,p)] suggest that irradiation of 1 in matrices results in α-cleavage to form biradical 31Br1, which extrudes N2 to yield 31Br2. Rearrangement of 31Br2 into 31N competes with cleavage of a N3 radical to form radical 1Ra3. The N3/1Ra3 radical pair combines to form 4, which upon irradiation yields 14N and 5.

Gold(I)-Thiolate Coordination Polymers as Multifunctional Materials: The Case of Au(I)-p-Fluorothiophenolate

Gold-sulfur interaction has vital importance in nanotechnologies and material chemistry to design functional nanoparticles, self-assembled monolayers, or molecular complexes. In this paper, a mixture of only two basic precursors, such as the chloroauric acid (HAu(III)Cl4) and a thiol molecule (p-fluorothiophenol (p-HSPhF)), are used for the synthesis of gold(I)-thiolate coordination polymers. Under different conditions of synthesis and external stimuli, five different functional materials with different states of [Au(I)(p-SPhF)]n can be afforded. These gold-thiolate compounds are (i) red emissive, flexible, and crystalline fibers; (ii) composite materials made of these red emissive fibers and gold nanoparticles; (iii) amorphous phase; (iv) transparent glass; and (v) amorphous-to-crystalline phase-change material associated with an ON/OFF switch of luminescence. The different functionalities of these materials highlight the great versatility of the gold(I) thiolate coordination polymers with easy synthesis and diverse shaping that may have great potential as sustainable phosphors, smart textiles, sensors, and phase change memories.

Progress of Metal Nanomaterial Controllable Preparation by Photoreduction

Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in biomedicine, catalysis, environment, electronics, and other fields, which is closely related to its structural form. For this purpose, researchers have been looking for a simple, green, and controllable way to mass produce metal nanomaterials with desired characteristics (shape, size, stability, etc.). Due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of metal nanoparticles, photoreduction method can control the morphology of metal nanoparticles well, which is also simple, large-scalable, and energy-saving. This review provides an overview of the photoreduction method for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and discusses the factors such as the light source, pH value, reagents, and temperature on the morphology of the nanoparticles. Finally, the challenges and development trends in the controlled preparation of nanomaterials are proposed.

This paper explores the photochemical synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles, specifically gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles, using a one-component photoinitiator system. The synthesis process involves visible light irradiation at a wavelength of 419 nm and an intensity of 250 mW/cm2. The radical-generating capabilities of the photoinitiators were evaluated using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The main objective of this study was to investigate how the concentration of metal salts influences the size and distribution of the nanoparticles. Proposed mechanisms for the photochemical formation of nanoparticles through photoinitiated radicals were validated using cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that the concentration of AgNO3 significantly impacted the size of silver nanoparticles, with diameters ranging from 1 to 5 nm at 1 wt% and 3 wt% concentrations, while increasing the concentration to 5 wt% led to an increase in the diameter of silver nanoparticles to 16 nm. When HAuCl4 was used instead of AgNO3, it was found that the average diameters of gold nanoparticles synthesized using both photoinitiators at different concentrations ranged between 1 and 4 nm. The findings suggest that variations in HAuCl4 concentration have minimal impact on the size of gold nanoparticles. The photoproduction of AuNPs was shown to be thermodynamically favorable, with the reduction of HAuCl4 to Au0 having ∆G values of approximately -3.51 and -2.96 eV for photoinitiators A and B, respectively. Furthermore, the photoreduction of Ag+1 to Ag0 was demonstrated to be thermodynamically feasible, with ∆G values of approximately -3.459 and -2.91 eV for photoinitiators A and B, respectively, confirming the effectiveness of the new photoinitiators on the production of nanoparticles. The synthesis of nanoparticles was monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and their sizes were determined through particle size analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images.

Facile Scale-Up of the Flow Synthesis of Silver Nanostructures Based on Norrish Type I Photoinitiators

Silver nanoparticles have become one of the most commercially and industrially relevant nanomaterials of the 21st century, owing to their potent antibacterial properties, as well as their useful catalytic and optical properties. Although many methods have been explored to produce AgNPs, we favor the photochemical approach using photoinitiators to produce AgNPs, owing to the high degree of control over reaction conditions, and the generation of so-called AgNP 'seeds' that can be used as-is, or as precursors for other silver nanostructures. In this work, we explore the scale-up of AgNP synthesis using flow chemistry and assess the usefulness of a range of industrial Norrish Type 1 photoinitiators in terms of flow compatibility and reaction time, as well as the resulting plasmonic absorption and morphologies. We establish that while all the photoinitiators used were able to generate AgNPs in a mixed aqueous/alcohol system, photoinitiators that generate ketyl radicals showed the greatest promise in terms of reaction times, while also showing greater flow compatibility compared to photoinitiators that generate 𝛼-aminoalkyl and α-hydroxybenzyl radicals. These findings help to establish a guideline for adapting photochemical AgNP syntheses to flow systems, helping to improve the scalability of the method in one of the largest industries in nanomaterial chemistry.

Copper II Complexes Based on Benzimidazole Ligands as a Novel Photoredox Catalysis for Free Radical Polymerization Embedded Gold and Silver Nanoparticles

The copper II complex's novel benzimidazole Schiff base ligands were manufactured and gauged as a new photoredox catalyst/photoinitiator amalgamated with triethylamine (TEA) and iodonium salt (Iod) for the polymerization of ethylene glycol diacrylate while exposed to visible light by an LED Lamp at 405 nm with an intensity of 543 mW/cm² at 28 °C. Gold and silver nanoparticles were obtained through the reactivity of the copper II complexes with amine/Iod salt. The size of NPs was around 1-30 nm. Lastly, the high performance of copper II complexes for photopolymerization containing nanoparticles is presented and examined. Ultimately, the photochemical mechanisms were observed using cyclic voltammetry. The preparation of the polymer nanocomposite nanoparticles in situ was photogenerated during the irradiation LED at 405 nm with an intensity of 543 mW/cm² at 28 °C process. UV-Vis, FTIR, and TEM analyses were utilized for the determination of the generation of AuNPs and AgNPs which resided within the polymer matrix.

Green synthesis silver nanoparticles Bougainvillea glabra Choisy/LED light with high catalytic activity in the removal of methylene blue aqueous solution

In this study, we evaluated, in a pioneering way, the influence of wavelengths from the decomposition of white light on the production and physicochemical properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Bearing in mind a process of green synthesis, an extract of the bracts of Bougainvillea glabra Choisy (BgC) was used, a species native to tropical and subtropical regions and frequently used in ornamentation, possessing in its photochemical composition, biomolecules capable of acting as reducing agents for convert Ag⁺ to Ag⁰. We used light-emitting diodes (LED) to obtain the desired wavelengths (violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red) in the test called rainbow, and we evaluated the obtaining of AgNPs compared to white LED light, nature, and absence of light. In the rainbow assay, we obtained a gradual increase in the intensity of the plasmonic band resonance from the red wavelength (0.124 ± 0.067 a.u.) to violet (0.680 ± 0.199 a.u.), indicating a higher reaction yield in obtaining AgNPs. Smaller hydrodynamic sizes (approximately 150 nm) at more energetic wavelengths (violet, blue, and green) about less energetic wavelengths (yellow, orange, and red) (approximately 400 nm) were obtained. Analysis by SEM microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction indicates the presence of silver nanoparticles in all LED colors used together with white LED light and Laboratory light (natural light). Due to the high environmental demand to remove pollutants from water sources, including textile dyes, we applied AgNPs/BgC to remove methylene blue (MB) dye from an aqueous solution. A minimum removal percentage greater than 65%, with emphasis on formulations synthesized by the colors of violet LED (84.27 ± 2.65%) and orange LED (85.91 ± 1.95%), was obtained.

Merging the Norrish type I reaction and transition metal catalysis: photo- and Rh-promoted borylation of C-C σ-bonds of aryl ketones

Synthesis of arylboronates via borylation of C-C σ-bonds of aryl ketones was achieved by the combined use of photoenergy and a Rh catalyst. The cooperative system enables α-cleavage of photoexcited ketones to generate aroyl radicals via the Norrish type I reaction, which are successively decarbonylated and borylated with the rhodium catalyst. This work establishes a new catalytic cycle merging the Norrish type I reaction and Rh catalysis and demonstrates the new synthetic utility of aryl ketones as aryl sources for intermolecular arylation reactions.

Blue-to-UVB Upconversion, Solvent Sensitization and Challenging Bond Activation Enabled by a Benzene-Based Annihilator

Several energy-demanding photoreactions require harsh UV light from inefficient light sources. The conversion of low-energy visible light to high-energy singlet states via triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) could offer a solution for driving such reactions under mild conditions. We present the first annihilator with an emission maximum in the UVB region that, combined with an organic sensitizer, is suitable for blue-to-UVB upconversion. The annihilator singlet was successfully employed as an energy donor in subsequent FRET activations of aliphatic carbonyls. This hitherto unreported UC-FRET reaction sequence was directly monitored using laser spectroscopy and applied to mechanistic irradiation experiments demonstrating the feasibility of Norrish chemistry. Our results provide clear evidence for a novel blue light-driven substrate or solvent activation strategy, which is important in the context of developing more sustainable light-to-chemical energy conversion systems.

In-situ photoreduction strategy for synthesis of silver nanoparticle-loaded PVDF ultrafiltration membrane with high antibacterial performance and stability

Ultrafiltration (UF) technology using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane has been widely applied to water and wastewater treatment due to its low cost and simple operation process. However, PVDF-based UF membrane always encountered the issue of membrane biofouling that greatly impacted the filtration performance. In this study, we prepare a silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-loaded PVDF (Ag/PVDF) UF membrane by an in-situ photoreduction method to mitigate the membrane biofouling. Different from the previously reported method, AgNPs were synthesized in-situ by a UV photoreduction process, in which Ag⁺ ions were reduced to zero-valent Ag nanoparticles by the photo-induced reducing radicals. Antibacterial experiments showed that the inhibition efficiency of Ag/PVDF membrane to Escherichia coli reached up to ~ 99% after antibacterial treatment for 24 h. In comparison with the pristine PVDF membrane, Ag/PVDF membrane possessed a lower water contact angle (83.7° vs. 38.1°), and its pure water flux increased by 23.7%, and a high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection efficiency was maintained. In addition, the high stability of the Ag/PVDF composite membrane was confirmed by the extremely low releasing amount of Ag. This study provides a novel strategy for the preparation of metal nanoparticle-incorporated Ag/PVDF ultrafiltration composite membrane showing favorable antibacterial performance and stability.

Dual Photoredox Ni/Benzophenone Catalysis: A Study of the NiII Precatalyst Photoreduction Step

The combination of Ni^IIX₂ salts with a bipyridine-type ligand and aromatic carbonyl-based chromophores has emerged as a benchmark precatalytic system to efficiently conduct cross-couplings mediated by light. Mechanistic studies have led to two scenarios in which Ni⁰ is proposed as the catalytic species. Nonetheless, in none of these studies has a Ni^II to Ni⁰ photoreduction been evidenced. By exploiting UV-visible, nuclear magnetic resonance, resonance Raman, electron paramagnetic resonance, and dynamic light scattering spectroscopies and also transmission electron microscopy, we report that, when photolyzed by UVA in alcohols, the structurally defined [Ni^II₂(μ-OH₂)(dtbbpy)₂(BPCO₂)₄] complex 1 integrating a benzophenone chromophore is reduced into a diamagnetic Ni^I dimer of the general formula [Ni^I₂(dtbbpy)₂(BPCO₂)₂]. In marked contrast, in THF, photolysis led to the fast formation of Ni⁰, which accumulates in the form of metallic ultrathin Ni nanosheets characterized by a mean size of ∼100 nm and a surface plasmon resonance at 505 nm. Finally, it is shown that 1 combined with UVA irradiation catalyzes cross-couplings, that is, C(sp³)-H arylation of THF and O-arylation of methanol. These results are discussed in light of the mechanisms proposed for these cross-couplings with a focus on the oxidation state of the catalytic species.

Photochemical and Electrochemical Applications of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer in Organic Synthesis

We present here a review of the photochemical and electrochemical applications of multi-site proton-coupled electron transfer (MS-PCET) in organic synthesis. MS-PCETs are redox mechanisms in which both an electron and a proton are exchanged together, often in a concerted elementary step. As such, MS-PCET can function as a non-classical mechanism for homolytic bond activation, providing opportunities to generate synthetically useful free radical intermediates directly from a wide variety of common organic functional groups. We present an introduction to MS-PCET and a practitioner's guide to reaction design, with an emphasis on the unique energetic and selectivity features that are characteristic of this reaction class. We then present chapters on oxidative N-H, O-H, S-H, and C-H bond homolysis methods, for the generation of the corresponding neutral radical species. Then, chapters for reductive PCET activations involving carbonyl, imine, other X═Y π-systems, and heteroarenes, where neutral ketyl, α-amino, and heteroarene-derived radicals can be generated. Finally, we present chapters on the applications of MS-PCET in asymmetric catalysis and in materials and device applications. Within each chapter, we subdivide by the functional group undergoing homolysis, and thereafter by the type of transformation being promoted. Methods published prior to the end of December 2020 are presented.

Kinetics and Mechanism of In Situ Metallization of Bulk DNA Films

DNA-templated metallization is broadly investigated in the fabrication of metallic structures by virtue of the unique DNA-metal ion interaction. However, current DNA-templated synthesis is primarily carried out based on pure DNA in an aqueous solution. In this study, we present in situ synthesis of metallic structures in a natural DNA complex bulk film by UV light irradiation, where the growth of silver particles is resolved by in situ time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering and dielectric spectroscopy. Our studies provide physical insights into the kinetics and mechanisms of natural DNA metallization, in correlation with the multi-stage switching operations in the bulk phase, paving the way towards the development of versatile biomaterial composites with tunable physical properties for optical storage, plasmonics, and catalytic applications.

High sensitivity colorimetric determination of L-cysteine using gold nanoparticles functionalized graphene oxide prepared by photochemical reduction method

This study aimed for the development of a cost effective and efficient method for L-cysteine detection, without employing expensive instrumentation within a short analysis time. The proposed method has been involved in the photochemical preparation of gold nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles on graphene oxide nanostructures. The gold nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles on graphene oxide acted as simple and sensitive nano-sensors for L-cysteine, due to the molecular structure of the L-cysteine presented -NH₂ and -SH, which is very attractive for coordination to gold nanoparticles and crosslink gold nanoparticles causing aggregation and color change. By using the gold nanoparticles on graphene oxide as a probe, the colorimetric detection of L-cysteine in a nanomolar order concentration was demonstrated.

Highly active small Pd nanocatalysts obtained by visible-light-induced photoreduction with citrate and oxalate salts under batch and flow approaches

With a suitable combination of citrate and oxalate salts as photoinitiators, a visible-light induced Pd NP synthesis was conducted. Depending on the reaction conditions of the catalysis, the ligands may have a great impact on the catalytic activity.

Light-assisted Ullmann coupling of phenols and aryl halides: The synergetic effect between plasmonic copper nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes from various sources

Utilizing light and plastic wastes as resources to turn the wasted phenols and hazardous aryl halides into value added chemicals seems to be an attractive idea for alleviating the energy crisis and environmental problems. In this work, we loaded plasmonic copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from various sources including commercial CNTs and those derived from plastic wastes. Under visible-light irradiation, the catalyst could efficiently convert phenols and aryl halides to diaryl ethers. Similar with commercial CNTs, excellent activity is also achieved when utilizing CNTs derived from different kinds of plastic wastes as support for the system. Further investigation shows that the visible-light irradiation and light-excited plasmonic Cu NPs are necessary to inhibit the phenol degradation on CNTs and in turn promote the cross-coupling of phenol and aryl halides. Compared with metal oxides and other carbon materials, the excellent capability of CNTs to absorb light, to convert light to heat, and to adsorb both two reactants simultaneously are critical to enhance the activity of Cu NPs, achieving the high yield of diaryl ethers. We believe that this study could provide a novel strategy for catalyst design and generate a more economically-sustainable process.

An all-in-one approach for synthesis and functionalization of nano colloidal gold with acetylacetone

Controllable synthesis, proper dispersion, and feasible functionalization are crucial requirements for the application of nanomaterials in many scenarios. Here, we report an all-in-one approach for the synthesis and functionalization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with the simplestβ-diketone, acetylacetone (AcAc). With this approach, the particle size of the resultant AuNPs was tunable by simply adjusting the light intensity or AcAc dosage. Moreover, owing to the capping role of AcAc, the resultant AuNPs could be stably dispersed in water for a year without obvious change in morphology and photochemical property. Formation of ligand to metal charge transfer complexes was found to play an important role in the redox conversion of Au with AcAc. Meanwhile, the moderate complexation ability enables the surface AcAc on the AuNPs to undergo ligand exchange reactions (LER). With the aid of Ag⁺, the AuNPs underwent LER with glutathione and exhibited enhanced photoluminescence (PL) with a maximum of 22-fold increase in PL intensity. The PL response was linear to the concentration of glutathione in the range of 0-500μM. Such a LER makes the obtained AuNPs being good imaging probes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on illustrating the roles of AcAc as a multifunctional ligand in fabrication of NPs, which sheds new light on the surface modulation in synthesis of nanomaterials.

Localized surface plasmon resonance for enhanced electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis plays a vital role in energy conversion and storage in modern society. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a highly attractive approach to enhance the electrocatalytic activity and selectivity with solar energy. LSPR excitation can induce the transfer of hot electrons and holes, electromagnetic field enhancement, lattice heating, resonant energy transfer and scattering, in turn boosting a variety of electrocatalytic reactions. Although the LSPR-mediated electrocatalysis has been investigated, the underlying mechanism has not been well explained. Moreover, the efficiency is strongly dependent on the structure and composition of plasmonic metals. In this review, the currently proposed mechanisms for plasmon-mediated electrocatalysis are introduced and the preparation methods to design supported plasmonic nanostructures and related electrodes are summarized. In addition, we focus on the characterization strategies used for verifying and differentiating LSPR mechanisms involved at the electrochemical interface. Following that are highlights of representative examples of direct plasmonic metal-driven and indirect plasmon-enhanced electrocatalytic reactions. Finally, this review concludes with a discussion on the remaining challenges and future opportunities for coupling LSPR with electrocatalysis.

Photochemical Synthesis of Selenium Nanospheres of Tunable Size and Colloidal Stability with Simple Diketones

Temporal and spatial segregations are two fundamental requirements for the successful synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs). To obtain colloidally stable selenium nanospheres (SeNSs), surfactants or polymers are generally needed as structure-directing agents or stabilizers in the reduction approaches for SeNP synthesis. The addition of such chemicals sacrifices the purity of the obtained SeNPs and, therefore, is detrimental to the applications. Here, for the first time, we report that low-molecular weight (less than six carbons) diketones are excellent photoreductants for green and tunable synthesis of SeNPs, owing to their merits in temporal and spatial control. With simple diketones as the photoreductants, the resultant SeNPs were pure and colloidally stable with nice photoelectronic properties. This finding not only provides a useful strategy for the synthesis of SeNPs but also might be a milestone in the development of ketone photochemistry.

Shape control in seed-mediated synthesis of non-elongated Cu nanoparticles and their optical properties

Shape and surface chemistry control in copper nanoparticle synthesis is an important research area due to a wide range of developing applications of this material in catalysis, energy conversion, sensing and many others. In addition to being an inexpensive and abundant metal, copper is an attractive photocatalyst due to its optical properties in the visible range. Here, we report a facile, tunable and sustainable methodology for synthesizing Pd-seeded Cu nanoparticles with various shapes, including cubes, spheres, raspberry-like particles and cages stabilized with a bilayer of a cationic surfactant in aqueous media. The experimental and theoretical examination of the optical response in the series of synthesized nanoparticles revealed that the low-energy extinction peak is associated with electronic interband transitions in the metal, in contrast to a widely spread attribution of this peak to a plasmonic response in Cu nanoparticles.

Design and perspective of amorphous metal nanoparticles from laser synthesis and processing

Amorphous metal nanoparticles (A-NPs) have aroused great interest in their structural disordering nature and combined downsizing strategies (e.g. nanoscaling), both of which are beneficial for highly strengthened properties compared to their crystalline counterparts. Conventional synthesis strategies easily induce product contamination and/or size limitations, which largely narrow their applications. In recent years, laser ablation in liquid (LAL) and laser fragmentation in liquid (LFL) as "green" and scalable colloid synthesis methodologies have attracted extensive enthusiasm in the production of ultrapure crystalline NPs, while they also show promising potential for the production of A-NPs. Yet, the amorphization in such methods still lacks sufficient rules to follow regarding the formation mechanism and criteria. To that end, this article reviews amorphous metal oxide and carbide NPs from LAL and LFL in terms of NP types, liquid selection, target elements, laser parameters, and possible formation mechanism, all of which play a significant role in the competitive relationship between amorphization and crystallization. Furthermore, we provide the prospect of laser-generated metallic glass nanoparticles (MG-NPs) from MG targets. The current and potential applications of A-NPs are also discussed, categorized by the attractive application fields e.g. in catalysis and magnetism. The present work aims to give possible selection rules and perspective on the design of colloidal A-NPs as well as the synthesis criteria of MG-NPs from laser-based strategies.

A General Nanocoating Method via Photoinduced Self-Initiation

Hybrid core-shell nanoparticles play a very significant role in many applications. Here, we report a light-induced oligomer coating on nanoparticles via Norrish type I reaction. The radical species generated via UV irradiation can chemically initiate the photoinitiators, which are then polymerized and deposited on inorganic nanoparticles via heterogeneous nucleation, forming a soft oligomer coating smaller than 40 nm. This coating method is versatile and potentially applicable to many different types of inorganic cores and their assemblies, making it a very useful technique for "freezing" nanoassemblies in solution. Moreover, these oligomer coatings containing radical species can also initiate surface polymerization of both styrenic and acrylic monomers with certain functionalities for different applications such as self-assembly, plasmon tuning, and pH sensing (3.5-4.5).

A low cost and open access system for rapid synthesis of large volumes of gold and silver nanoparticles

Rapid synthesis of nanomaterials in scalable quantities is critical for accelerating the discovery and commercial translation of nanoscale-based technologies. The synthesis of metal nanogold and silver in volumes larger than 100 mL is not automatized and might require of the use of harsh conditions that in most cases is detrimental for the production of nanoparticles with reproducible size distributions. In this work, we present the development and optimization of an open-access low-cost NanoParticle Flow Synthesis System (NPFloSS) that allows for the rapid preparation of volumes of up to 1 L of gold and silver nanoparticle aqueous solutions.

Fluorescence activation, patterning and enhancement with photogenerated radicals, a prefluorescent probe and silver nanostructures

We designed a switchable fluorophore activated by UVA light and a radical initiator, for optical lithography with concomitant metal-enhanced fluorescence by silver nanoparticles.

Independent Generation and Time-Resolved Detection of 2'-Deoxyguanosin-N2-yl Radicals

Guanine radicals are important reactive intermediates in DNA damage. Hydroxyl radical (HO. ) has long been believed to react with 2'-deoxyguanosine (dG) generating 2'-deoxyguanosin-N1-yl radical (dG(N1-H). ) via addition to the nucleobase π-system and subsequent dehydration. This basic tenet was challenged by an alternative mechanism, in which the major reaction of HO. with dG was proposed to involve hydrogen atom abstraction from the N2-amine. The 2'-deoxyguanosin-N2-yl radical (dG(N2-H). ) formed was proposed to rapidly tautomerize to dG(N1-H). . We report the first independent generation of dG(N2-H). in high yield via photolysis of 1. dG(N2-H). is directly observed upon nanosecond laser flash photolysis (LFP) of 1. The absorption spectrum of dG(N2-H). is corroborated by DFT studies, and anti- and syn-dG(N2-H). are resolved for the first time. The LFP experiments showed no evidence for tautomerization of dG(N2-H). to dG(N1-H). within hundreds of microseconds. This observation suggests that the generation of dG(N1-H). via dG(N2-H). following hydrogen atom abstraction from dG is unlikely to be a major pathway when HO. reacts with dG.

Effects of ring-strain on the ultrafast photochemistry of cyclic ketones

Ring-strain in cyclic organic molecules is well-known to influence their chemical reactivity. Here, we examine the consequence of ring-strain for competing photochemical pathways that occur on picosecond timescales. The significance of Norrish Type-I photochemistry is explored for three cyclic ketones in cyclohexane solutions at ultraviolet (UV) excitation wavelengths from 255–312 nm, corresponding to an π* ← n excitation to the lowest excited singlet state (S₁). Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy with broadband UV/visible probe laser pulses reveals processes common to cyclobutanone, cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone, occurring on timescales of ≤1 ps, 7–9 ps and >500 ps. These kinetic components are respectively assigned to prompt cleavage of an α C–C bond in the internally excited S₁-state molecules prepared by UV absorption, vibrational cooling of these hot-S₁ molecules to energies below the barrier to C–C bond cleavage on the S₁ state potential energy surface (with commensurate reductions in the energy-dependent α-cleavage rate), and slower loss of thermalized S₁-state population. The thermalized S₁-state molecules may competitively decay by activated reaction over the barrier to α C–C bond fission on the S₁-state potential energy surface, internal conversion to the ground (S₀) electronic state, or intersystem crossing to the lowest lying triplet state (T₁) and subsequent C–C bond breaking. The α C–C bond fission barrier height in the S₁ state is significantly reduced by the ring-strain in cyclobutanone, affecting the relative contributions of the three decay time components which depend systematically on the excitation energy above the S₁-state energy barrier. Transient infra-red absorption spectra obtained after UV excitation identify ring-opened ketene photoproducts of cyclobutanone and their timescales for formation.

Metal-Free Aryl Cross-Coupling Directed by Traceless Linkers

The metal-free, highly selective synthesis of biaryls poses a major challenge in organic synthesis. The scope and mechanism of a promising new approach to (hetero)biaryls by the photochemical fusion of aryl substituents tethered to a traceless sulfonamide linker (photosplicing) are reported. Interrogating photosplicing with varying reaction conditions and comparison of diverse synthetic probes (40 examples, including a suite of heterocycles) showed that the reaction has a surprisingly broad scope and involves neither metals nor radicals. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the C-C bond is formed by an intramolecular photochemical process that involves an excited singlet state and traversal of a five-membered transition state, and thus consistent ipso-ipso coupling results. These results demonstrate that photosplicing is a unique aryl cross-coupling method in the excited state that can be applied to synthesize a broad range of biaryls.

Dual Benzophenone/Copper-Photocatalyzed Giese-Type Alkylation of C(sp3 )-H Bonds

Photocatalyzed Giese-type alkylations of C(sp³ )-H bonds are very attractive reactions in the context of atom-economy in C-C bond formation. The main limitation of such reactions is that when using highly polymerizable olefin acceptors, such as unsubstituted acrylates, acrylonitrile, or methyl vinyl ketone, radical polymerization often becomes the dominant or exclusive reaction pathway. Herein, we report that the polymerization of such olefins is strongly limited or suppressed when combining the photocatalytic activity of benzophenone (BP) with a catalytic amount of Cu(OAc)₂ . Under mild and operationally simple conditions, the Giese adducts resulting from the C(sp³ )-H functionalization of amines, alcohols, ethers, and cycloalkanes could be synthesized. Preliminary mechanistic studies have revealed that the reaction does not proceed through a radical chain, but through a dual BP/Cu photocatalytic process, in which both Cu^II and low-valent Cu^I/0 species, generated in situ by reduction by the BP ketyl radical, may react with α-keto or α-cyano intermediate radicals, thus preventing polymerization.

Light activated synthesis of the atomically precise fluorescent silver cluster Ag18(Capt)14

Metal clusters of gold and silver with highly tunable optical and electronic properties are attractive candidates for next generation medical imaging and therapy. Of these two most commonly studied metals, silver clusters often exhibit superior optical properties (i.e. stronger absorbance and higher emission quantum yield). The atomically precise synthesis of these clusters is essential before their use in biological applications can be realized. However, most cluster synthetic routes result in complex mixtures, where isolation and/or characterization can become incredibly challenging. Using photochemistry, we demonstrate a synthetic route for silver thiolate clusters resulting in the isolation of a pure eighteen-atom silver cluster capped by fourteen captopril ligands, Ag₁₈(Capt)₁₄. The facile control over the reduction of Ag(i) salt that this photochemical route affords can be readily applied as a general synthesis for isolating other new, atomically precise clusters.

The Persistent Radical Effect in Organic Synthesis

Radical-radical couplings are mostly nearly diffusion-controlled processes. Therefore, the selective cross-coupling of two different radicals is challenging and not a synthetically valuable transformation. However, if the radicals have different lifetimes and if they are generated at equal rates, cross-coupling will become the dominant process. This high cross-selectivity is based on a kinetic phenomenon called the persistent radical effect (PRE). In this Review, an explanation of the PRE supported by simulations of simple model systems is provided. Radical stabilities are discussed within the context of their lifetimes, and various examples of PRE-mediated radical-radical couplings in synthesis are summarized. It is shown that the PRE is not restricted to the coupling of a persistent with a transient radical. If one coupling partner is longer-lived than the other transient radical, the PRE operates and high cross-selectivity is achieved. This important point expands the scope of PRE-mediated radical chemistry. The Review is divided into two parts, namely 1) the coupling of persistent or longer-lived organic radicals and 2) "radical-metal crossover reactions"; here, metal-centered radical species and more generally longer-lived transition-metal complexes that are able to react with radicals are discussed-a field that has flourished recently.

Convenient Synthesis of 3D Fluffy PtPd Nanocorals Loaded on 2D h-BN Supports as Highly Efficient and Stable Electrocatalysts for Alcohol Oxidation Reaction

Fuel cells hold great promise for clean and sustainable energy, whereas their widespread commercialization strongly depends on the development of highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Herein, three-dimensional fluffy PtPd nanocorals (NCs) loaded on two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) supports were successfully achieved by a simple one-step strategy based on ultraviolet (UV) laser-excited photochemical reaction. As for alcohol oxidation reaction, the h-BN/PtPd NCs with unique nanoporous surface provide more enhanced electrocatalytic performances than many previous nanocatalysts, owing to abundant active sites and plentiful charge-transfer channels formed on high electrode-electrolyte contact area. Especially, the mass activity of h-BN/PtPd NCs is about 962.8 mA mg_PtPd ^-1 in methanol oxidation reaction in alkaline solution, which can be maintained at ∼274.9 mA mg_PtPd ^-1 (28.6% of the initial one) even after a 5 × 10⁴ s durability test. The present work not only offers an advanced electrocatalyst for long-term fuel cells but also provides a versatile route for construction of complex metallic nanocomposites on 2D supports, holding great potential for diverse energy-related applications.

Photochemical preparation of gold nanoparticle decorated cyclodextrin vesicles with tailored plasmonic properties

We report a photochemical strategy for the preparation of plasmonic vesicles by the in situ formation of gold nanoparticles at the surface of cyclodextrin host vesicle templates decorated with photoactive guest polymers. Upon irradiation with UV light, these carefully designed polymer shells undergo a Norrish type I reaction to generate reducing radicals for the in situ reduction of gold salts and simultaneously provide a stabilizing matrix allowing for a dense decoration with discrete gold seeds. In a highly controlled growth procedure the gold particle size can be adjusted between 3 and 28 nm resulting in an increasing interparticle plasmonic coupling as revealed by a pronounced redshift of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and an enhanced absorption at wavelengths above 600 nm. This unique combination of cyclodextrin vesicles capable of specifically recognizing guest molecules with a plasmonic particle shell displaying multiple interparticle gaps acting as electromagnetic hotspots shows great potential for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications.

Wide spectrum photocatalytic activity in lanthanide-doped upconversion nanophosphors coated with porous TiO2 and Ag-Cu bimetallic nanoparticles

Approaches towards maximum utilization of solar light spectrum for photocatalysis have currently attracted great interest. The combination of profoundly different properties, such as, upconversion, semiconducting and plasmonic properties can produce a favorable path in efficient utilization of the different regions of solar light reaching to earth. In this regard, design and fabrication of microstructures consisting of upconverting lanthanide doped nanophosphors coated with porous semiconducting material, TiO₂ and decorated with plasmonic Ag-Cu bimetallic nanoparticles is presented in this work. These microstructures display great stability and exceptional photocatalytic activity by absorbing wide spectrum from ultraviolet to near infrared. The photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the synergistic effects between the different components and the efficient energy transfer between them. The development of such sort of hybrid microstructures could pave way for the development of new materials for the efficient utilization of the wide spectrum of sunlight.

Construction of pure worm-like AuAg nanochains for ultrasensitive SERS detection of pesticide residues on apple surfaces

Ultrasensitive detection of pesticide residues on agricultural products using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is of significant interest in food security. Herein, worm-like AuAg nanochains with highly interconnected ultrafine (~6.2 nm) bimetallic particles were developed as an excellent SERS nanosensor via laser-assisted strategy. The SERS detection limit of thiram molecules on apple surfaces is about 10^-7 M (0.03 ppm), which is about 200 times lower than the maximal residue limit (MRL, 7 ppm) in fruit prescribed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Importantly, the established excellent linear relationships between the SERS intensities and thiram concentrations can sensitively monitor the slight variation of pesticide residues in agriculture.
