Abstract
Atomically precise Ag nanoclusters display distinctive properties that are dictated by their structures and electronic states. However, manipulating the electronic states of Ag nanoclusters is challenging owing to their inherent instability and susceptibility to undesired structural changes, decomposition, and aggregation. Recently, we reported the synthesis of a body-centered cubic {Ag30}22+ nanocluster encapsulated within a ring-shaped polyoxometalate (POM) [P8W48O184]40- by reacting 16 Ag+-containing [P8W48O184]40- with Ag+ using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a mild reducing agent. This led to a redox-induced structural transformation into a face-centered cubic {Ag30}16+ nanocluster. In this study, we demonstrated the modulation of the electronic states of Ag30 nanoclusters within the ring-shaped POM through two different approaches. A face-centered cubic {Ag30}18+ nanocluster, featuring distinct oxidation states compared to previously reported {Ag30}22+ and {Ag30}16+ nanoclusters, was synthesized using tetra-n-butylammonium borohydride, a stronger reducing agent than DMF, in the reaction of 16 Ag+-containing [P8W48O184]40- and Ag+. Additionally, by leveraging the acid-base properties of POMs, we demonstrated the reversible, stepwise modulation of the charge distribution in the Ag30 nanocluster through controlling protonation states of the ring-shaped POM ligand. These results highlight the potential of engineering POM-stabilized Ag nanoclusters with diverse structures and electronic states, thereby facilitating the exploration of novel properties and applications utilizing the unique characteristics of the POM ligands.

Abstract
Nature seems to favor the formation of closed anion-templated silver clusters. How precisely to create non-closed sliver clusters remains an interesting challenge. In this work, we propose that the use of transition-metal-coordination-cluster substituted polyoxometalates (TMCC-substituted POMs) as templates is an effective synthetic strategy for creating the non-closed silver clusters, as demonstrated by the obtainment of four types of rare non-closed silver cluster species of Ag38-TM (TM = Co, Ni or Zn), Ag37-Zn, {Ag37-Zn}∞ and Ag36-TM (TM = Co, Ni). The idea of the strategy is to employ the TMCC-substituted POMs containing cluster modules with different bond interactions with Ag+ ions as templates to guide the formation of the non-closed silver clusters. For example, TMCC-substituted POM clusters are used as templates in this work, which contain POM modules that can coordinate with the Ag+ ions and TMCC moieties that are difficult to coordinate with the Ag+ ions, leading to the Ag+ ions being unable to form closed clusters around TMCC-substituted POM templates. The work demonstrates a promising approach to developing intriguing and unexplored non-closed silver clusters.

Abstract
Alloying is an effective method for modulating metal nanoclusters to enrich their structural diversity and physicochemical properties. Recent investigations have demonstrated that polyoxometalates (POMs) can act as effective multidentate ligands for silver (Ag) nanoclusters to endow them with synergistic properties, reactivity, catalytic properties, and stability. However, the application of POMs as ligands has been confined predominantly to monometallic nanoclusters. Herein, we report a synthetic method for fabricating surface-exposed gold (Au)-Ag alloy nanoclusters within a ring-shaped POM ([P8W48O184]40-). Reacting an Ag nanocluster stabilized by the ring-shaped POM with Au ions (Au+) was found to substitute several Ag atoms at the core of the nanocluster with Au atoms. The resultant {Au8Ag26} alloy nanocluster demonstrated superior photocatalytic activity and stability compared to the pristine Ag nanocluster in the aerobic oxidation of α-terpinene under visible-light irradiation. These findings provide fundamental insights into the formation and catalytic properties of POM-stabilized alloy nanoclusters and advance exploration into the synthesis and applications of diverse metal nanoclusters.

Abstract
Two structurally new Lindqvist hexaniobate-templated silver thiolate clusters, [Nb6O19@Ag45(iPrS)23(CH3COO)14] (Ag45) and (H3O)4[Nb6O19@Ag41KS2.5O2(H2O)7.5(iPrS)24(CH3COO)5] (Ag41), were synthesized using a facile one-pot solvothermal approach. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the presence of a classical Lindqvist-type [Nb6O19]8- anion template, with iPrS- and CH3COO- surface-protecting ligands in both silver clusters, which can further form two-dimensional Ag45 assembly and one-dimensional Ag41 chain packing structures. Both Ag45 and Ag41 clusters exhibited intriguing photothermal conversion properties and temperature-dependent emission behavior.

Abstract
Two 48-nuclei silver nanocages with similar structures and compositions were synthesized by using Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) BW12 and SiW11Ni as anionic templates. However, their photoluminescence and photocurrent properties showed obvious differences. These results suggest that POMs not only serve as anion templates in constructing silver clusters but also influence their properties.

Abstract
Electronic structures of anion-templated silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) are not well understood compared to conventional, template-free Ag NCs. In this study, we synthesized three new anion-templated Ag NCs, namely [S@Ag17(S-4CBM)15(PPh3)5]0, [S@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]0, and [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8][PPh4], where S-4CBM = 4-chlorobenzene methanethiolate, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that they have S@Ag6, S@Ag10, and Cl@Ag10 cores, respectively. Investigation of their electronic structures by optical spectroscopy and theoretical calculations elucidated the following unique features: (1) their electronic structures are different from those of template-free Ag NCs described by the superatomic concept; (2) optical absorption in the range of 550-400 nm for S2--templated Ag NCs is attributed to the charge transitions from S2--templated Ag-cage orbitals to the s-shaped orbital in the S2- moiety; (3) the Cl--templated Ag NCs can be viewed as [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]0[PPh4]0 rather than the ion pair [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]-[PPh4]+; and (4) singlet-coupled singly occupied orbitals are involved in the optical absorption of the Cl--templated Ag NC.

Abstract
The compound [(Nb6O19)@Ag34(tBuCC)24(CH3COO)2] (Ag34) was synthesized using the solvothermal method combined with volatilization. This was the first case, to the best of our knowledge, of isolating a silver cluster containing a polyoxoniobate (PONb) template. The luminescence, solution behavior and solid-state stability of Ag34 were studied in detail. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry indicated that Ag34 can maintain the integrity of its skeleton in solution. Detection of temperature could be a potential application of its unique luminescent behavior. We expect this work to inspire further fabrications of PONb-templated high-nuclearity silver clusters.

Abstract
To acquire the atomic design of new functional Ag(i) nanoclusters (NCs), a new synthetic approach of site-specific alloying has been unveiled, by which the neutral CO2 templated Ag20 core is confined through Cu containing two peripheral motif units. The impact of surface charge, size and shape of the template on the self-assembly of Ag(i) has been precisely controlled here for the first time and as a result, a similar pentagonal gyrobicupola-like Ag20 core is formed while varying the templates (S2-, CO3 2- and CO2). However, the surface charge generated on the Ag(i) core due to the presence of a neutral template opens up the possibility of this novel alloying process. The introduction of strongly interacted peripheral motif units (DMA-CuS-) on the Ag20 core enforces more rigidity in the skeleton that reduces the probability of non-radiative transition in the excited state by lowering the intramolecular vibration. In addition to this, the incorporation of electron-donating peripheral motif units modulates the frontier molecular arrangement that helps in attaining the synergy which would ultimately turn on the room-temperature emission properties. The electron-donating effect of the peripheral motif units further leads to a sharp reduction of the bandgap and the symmetric position of the heterometal in the cluster minimizes the intercluster distances which further influences the intercluster charge carrier transport. So, the precise structure-property correlation with this novel synthetic approach will pave the way for a well-functioning NC design.

Abstract
A polyoxometalate-templated thiolate-protected silver nanocluster, [Cu3(Mo4O16)2@Ag55(CyhS)43(CH3O)(COOCF3)]·3H2O, has been isolated under solvothermal conditions. In situ insertion of three Cu2+ ions into two polymolybdate anions generated a new, sandwich-type D3h-symmetric [Cu3(Mo4O16)2]10- polyoxoanion template encapsulated into an Ag55(CyhS)43 shell. The structure and composition of this Ag nanocluster have been fully characterized. This work has provided a new way to develop high-nuclearity metal nanoclusters with various structures.

Abstract
Metalloligand strategy has been well recognized in the syntheses of heterometallic coordination polymers; however, such a strategy used in the assembly of silver nanoclusters is not broadly available. Herein, we report the stepwise syntheses of a family of halogen-templated Ag42 nanoclusters (Ag42c-Ag42f) based on MoVI-anchored p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (H4TC4A) as a metalloligand (hereafter named MoO3-TC4A). X-ray crystallography demonstrates that they are similar C3-symmetric silver-organic nanocalices capped by six MoO3-TC4A metalloligands, which are evenly distributed up and down the base of 42 silver atoms. These nanoclusters can be disassembled to six bowl-shaped [Ag11(MoO3-TC4A)(RS)3] secondary building units (SBUs, R = Et or nPr), which are fused together in a face-sharing fashion surrounding Cl- or Br- as a central anion template. The electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) indicates their high stabilities in solution and verifies the formation of the MoO3-TC4A metalloligand, thereby rationalizing the overall stepwise assembly process for them. Moreover, Ag42c shows lower cytotoxicity and better activity against the HepG-2 cell line than MCF-7 and BGC-823. These results not only exemplify the effectiveness of a thiacalix[4]arene-based metalloligand in the assembly of silver nanoclusters but also give us profound insight about the step-by-step assembly process in silver nanoclusters.

Abstract
Compound [Ag 44 (W 10 O 32 )(S t Bu) 24 (CF 3 COO) 8 ](CF 3 COO) 6 ·6H 2 O ( 1 ) was synthesized through the one-pot method, which is the first case of isolating a new silver thiolate cluster containing a [W 10 O 32 ] 6- template which transforms from WO 4 2- polyoxoanion through a self-assembly process. The anionic nature of the reduced [W 10 O 32 ] 6- template and the effective silver-oxygen interaction contribute to the formation of the Ag 44 nanowheel in 1 . The luminescence, photocatalytic activity and electrochemistry properties of 1 were studied.

Abstract
Monodisperse and atomically precise Ag nanoclusters have attracted considerable recent research interest. A conventional silver cluster usually consists of a silver metallic kernel and an organic peripheral ligand shell. Nevertheless, the present inevitable problem is the unsatisfied stability of such nanoclusters. In this concept, we will give an introduction to Ag clusters protected by metal-oxo modules which exhibit enhanced stability and unique properties. Accordingly, three different types of clusters are summarized: (1) Ag clusters protected by mononuclear oxometallates; (2) Ag clusters protected by block-like metal-oxo clusters; (3) Ag clusters protected by hollow-like metal-oxo clusters. The aim of this concept is to offer possible general guidance and insight into future rational design of more metal-oxo clusters protected silver clusters or even other coinage metal nanoclusters.

Abstract
Atomically precise silver clusters with tunable photoluminescence (PL) properties have attracted extensive attention due to their great value for basic science and future applications. Here, we report that the addition of a sulfido template into a triangular thiolated silver cluster [Ag11(iPrS)9(dppb)3]·2CF3SO3·CH3OH (Ag11, dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane), which is emissive at 660 nm under ambient conditions, produced another silver cluster [S@Ag15(sBuS)12(dppb)3]·CF3SO3·H2O (Ag15) that displays 716 nm emission with a 56 nm redshift aided by the ligand sec-butyl mercaptan. The sulfido template, which affects the geometrical and electronic structures, results in a redshift of Ag11 room-temperature PL as a result of opening up the template-to-metal charge transfer (TMCT) and disturbing the electronic transition between the metal core and ligands at the periphery.

Abstract
Constructing silver(i)-thiolate clusters from simple building blocks usually involves elusive self-assembly processes and remains a long-standing challenge. In this work, we report 6 silver(i)-thiolate clusters protected by pyridines, namely, [Ag3(tBuS)2(Py)(NO3)]n (Py = pyridine) (1), [Ag10(tBuS)6(Py)6(CF3CO2)4]·3Py (2), [Ag12(iPrS)6(Py)8(NO3)6]·2H2O (3), Ag12(iPrS)6(Py)8(CF3CO2)6 (4), Ag12(iPrS)6(4-ap)6(NO3)6 (4-ap = 4-aminopyridine) (5), and [Ag50S13(tBuS)20(Py)12]·4BF4·4Py·4CH3OH·2H2O (6). Single-crystal X-ray crystallography analysis reveals that six clusters are constructed by four types of structural blocks, including the PyAg(tBuS)2 monomer, Py2Ag2(tBuS)2 dimer, Py3Ag3(tBuS)3 trimer and (4-ap)6Ag6(iPrS)6 hexamer. Notably, cluster 6 consists of a rhombic dodecahedron S@Ag14 kernel with 12 interstitial S2- atoms encapsulated by 8 μ4-tBuS- ligands, as well as six unique butterfly-like (Py)2Ag6(tBuS)2 staple motifs composed of a Py2Ag2(tBuS)2 dimer and four silver ions. Moreover, it is found that pyridine ligands have important influence on the construction of silver thiolate clusters and their Ag-SR bond lengths.

Abstract
Two polyoxometalate (POM)-based thiolate-protected silver coordination polymers were obtained using different Lindquist-type POM precursors under the same conditions. [Ag10(StBu)6(CH3CN)8(Mo6O19)2·2CH3CN]n (abbreviated as Ag10-Mo6) was observed to feature chain-like structures containing Ag10 clusters linked by [Mo6O19]2- anions through Ag-O bonds and to exhibit unprecedented green photoluminescence at room temperature. Interestingly, [Ag18(StBu)12(CH3CN)5(Mo6O19)2·Mo6O19·2CH3CN]n (abbreviated as Ag18-Mo6) was found to contain 20-membered cycle-Ag10S10 each with a diameter of approximately 11.382 Å and constructed from alternating silver and sulfur atoms and interconnected into an elegant Ag-S sheet by interstitial the Ag3StBu and AgCH3CN motifs, and to also contain [Mo6O19]2- counter ions filling in the spaces made by the cycle-Ag10S10 and strengthening the structure by forming Ag-O bonds. Such a stacking structure for thiolate-protected silver compounds has not been previously reported.

Abstract
Tetraphosphine ligand dpppda reacts with AgNO3 to generate two 1D coordination polymers containing cubic and chair-like [Ag4(NO3)4] clusters. ESR spectroscopy supported by DFT calculations indicated the presence of dpppda˙+, a Wurster's blue - like radical cation formed by intramolecular ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). This LMCT results in higher AgI → Ag0 potentials and good photocurrent responses.

Abstract
In view of elucidating potential structures and assembly mechanism of silver clusters and silver cluster-based metal-organic frameworks, we prepared four argento-organic-clusters/frameworks where the structures were directed by chromate in the presence of different thiolates. All four structures with tBuC6H4S-, SiBu-, and SiPr- consist of three core-shells, an inner CrO42-, an intermediate Ag-S aggregate and finally the protective organic moieties. {(HNEt3)3[Ag(CrO4)4@Ag46(SC6H4tBu)24(CF3COO)18(DMF)4]} (1) is a supertetrahedron with an inner Ag(CrO4)4 tetrahedron shelled by four fused Ag11.5S6 lobes. [(CrO4)5@Ag40(SiBu)27(CF3COO)3]n (2) is an undulated snake-like tube housing the infinite CrO42- tetrahedra. [(CrO4)2@Ag41(SiBu)30(NO3)3(CN)4]n (3) forms an uncommon 7-connected kwh network incorporating hexagonal layers of Ag19(SiBu)15 balls with a single inner CrO42- connected by another Ag atom. Both enantiomeric chiral qtz frameworks of [CrO4@Ag20(SiPr)10(Cr2O7)2(COOCF3)4(DMF)4]n (4) were structurally characterized. In 4, Cr2O72- connects the Ag20(SiPr)10 clusters with a trapped CrO42- into a 3D quartz (qtz) structure, where the spherical cluster acts like oxygen and Cr2O72- takes the place of Si in SiO2. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis of the reaction solutions of 1-4 clearly indicated that (i) the Ag(CrO4)4@Ag46 core of 1 can retain its molecular structure in the solution and (ii) the chromate-templated polynuclear silver-thiolate species in solution are important building blocks to construct the 1D or 3D motif for 2-4. The electrochemistry in sulfuric acid and enhancement of the electrical conductivity upon I2 doping have also been reported.

Abstract
S2-, MoO42-, and Mo6O228- were successfully employed as templates in the formation of six high-symmetry polynuclear silver clusters as exemplified in the single-crystal X-ray structures of [S@Ag18(tBuC6H4S)16(dppp)4]·DMF·5CH3CN·3CH3OH (1), [MoO4@Ag24(MeC6H4S)12(dppm)6(MoO4)4]·2BF4·C2H5NO (2), [MoO4@Ag24(MeC6H4S)12(dppm)6(MoO4)4]·2CF3SO3 (3), [MoO4@Ag24(MeC6H4S)12(dppf)6(MoO4)4]·2CF3SO3 (4), [MoO4@Ag24(MeC6H4S)12(dppb)6(MoO4)4]·2CF3SO3 (5) and [Mo6O22@Ag46(tBuC6H4S)32(dppm)4(CH3CN)8]·6CF3SO3 (6) (dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane, dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene and dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane). Cluster 1 is a S2--centered octadecanuclear banana-shaped molecule. Clusters 2-5 have similar structures consisting of a tetrahedron of a MoO42- core and four MoO42- where three silver atoms cap each face and a pair sits on each edge, giving tetraicosanuclear ball-shaped molecules. Although different diphosphine ligands and silver salts were used in the syntheses, 2-5 contain a common building cluster unit with similar geometry and nuclearity. With (Bu4N)2Mo6O19 as a template, a giant 46-silver-atom cluster encapsulates an in situ modified Mo6O228- unit. The nuclearity and geometry depend on the size and shape of the templates. High-resolution electrospray mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) analyses of 4 indicate its exceptionally high stability in acetonitrile. The solid-state luminescence of 1 as a function of the temperature exhibits thermochromism from red to yellow due to the different intensities of the two bands. This work established a new strategy for the construction of polynuclear silver clusters using an anionic template and mixed S- and P-donor ligands where a promising approach for building novel dual emissive materials is unraveled.
